Shelter is one of my favourite speakeasy bars in Calgary, along with Betty Lou's Library. I brought a work crush here on a date back in 2018, and it was romantic. Last Tuesday, there was a taco pop-up event at Shelter. I picked up a taco kit for $32, which included enough al pastor for ten tacos, ten homemade corn torillas, two homemade salsas, and lots of pineapple, onion, cilantro and limes. Not only was this the same price I pay in Cabo, but the chefs nailed the authentic flavours in the meat, salsas and tortilllas. The meat was juicy and flavourful from the char. The tortilla was fragrant and tasted just like the ones we get at our favourite taco restaurants in Mexico. I hear there might be a second pop-up event next Tuesday. Cozy bar with good selection of cocktails. Liked the warm ambience, the homéy feels inside. Personally I like bells and whistles cocktails during my visit, I'm not sure how often they change cocktails menu but i think for fall and winter it's best to gibe it a shot. read more

This is a really cool cockail bar, but my rating is based on the ramen pop up we tried last weekend. This cocktail bar offers a space for local businesses to try their food out. Theyre usually 3 days long and they change all the time! Follow their instagram/Website for more info on their popups. I saw the Ramen pop up on instagram and went on the last night around 30 min after opening to give it a try. I was super surprised by the long line up and we waited around 30 min. We ordered two of the ramens, a karaage and a mocktail. It again took some time for the food to come out (I dont think they were well prepared). The ramen was totally disappointing because it had so much potential. There was not enough soup at all, which made the whole dish kind of bland. Mine was supposed to be Miso Butter, and my friends the original but I could not taste a difference between the two. Mine was even missing the butter. The toppings however were REALLY good, like the egg was perfect, the pork was super flavorful and tender and there was pickled ginger which I loved! Just so disappointing about the soup. The Karaage on the other hand was hands down amazing: Light, juicy, crispy and flavorful! Its kind of hard to judge the restaurant itself but I think the bar itself deserves a 4/5 for their atmosphere and cool layout. I also think its a cool concept for other restaurants to have a chance to show their potential! I think I would try again for a different event! read more

One of the best hidden gems of Calgary. This place provides an incredibly unique atmosphere and ambiance that is unparalleled to anywhere else. The staff are well dressed and quite comfortable with their knowledge of the menu. The owner is usually there and engages with the people who come in, giving it fresh feel every time. The drinks are exceptionally delicious and presented in a very unique manner. Best place for a quaint and cozy date night with a brilliant decor to effectively put anyone in a good mood. read more

Cocktail Class The people teaching it were great! Very funny and knowledgeable, but the first half of the class was power point presentations which I feel as though could have been made brief or been even a little bit interactive, iot felt like I was back at school. The second part is a little bit more interactive, as you are standing at the bar, but you still don't get to learn much mixology. You don't get to make yourself drinks and only get to learn two techniques (stirring and shaking). You don't get to learn about smoking the drinks or the actual flavors, or whats in many cocktails. Overview from event description: "Muddling, stirring, shaking, and smoking techniques" - 2/4 (learned stirring and shaking) "A cocktail contest with prizes" - (freepouring water contest) (prize, singular) "One of the most important aspects of learning about cocktailing is tasting different spirits and cocktails, so sprinkled throughout the course we will be tasting various classic and new classic cocktails"- This makes it sound like you will be tasting the spirits along with the class, instead you get three mixed cocktail and merely shown the bottles the spirits come in. Overall, I wouldn't recommend. Beautiful space, but maybe not for the cocktail class. read more

Incredible cocktail bar. Really cool atmosphere. Drinks are amazing creative and delicious. We were visiting from Scottsdale Arizona and stumbled on the place. One of the highlights of our trip!! If you are in Calgary check out this place and you will not be disappointed!!! Shelter was absolutely incredible. The drinks were amazing, the decor and music was sublime. I think my quarter must have been kicking in because the visual effect of those lights when leaning back was incredible. I also had a bunch of the food, the guest cook made the best taco I ever have had in my life (softshell crab) they were so good I was almost in tears. Absolutely incredible. 17/10. read more

What a fun spot for a few drinks. Love the decor inside, so different and stimulating. A lot of take in! Had a few negroni's and they also have a decent wine list. They do serve food, but we didn't try any. Fun servers. I will be back! read more
