I just read Liz's review..poor Liz! I did shoot some photos. Food and the wall decor..yes with a painting in it! Didn't meet any irate chef though. Carefree, pleasant and everyone seems to be in high spirits here. I spotted families lounging on the vintage sofas, some sit by the windows with colourful cushions and men in suits have coffee talk in al fresco way. I had a gluten chocolate cake which was utterly divine and too good for my tummy! They have a good brekkie menu here, perhaps I shall try them out at my next visit but will remember to avoid taking any painting shots!

French toast with rhubarb, strawberries & cream

I had heard about this cafe many times, but had never gone in before. I decided to try it today and I was not disappointed. The service was quick, the staff were friendly and the food was tasty. The menu doesn't have a huge variety, but what they do offer is still good. The prices are moderate, so you're looking at roughly $14 per meal. The staff we very friendly & welcoming, and the service was quick. Our drinks were served in a couple of minutes and our food was served within 10-15 minutes. I got french toast, with strawberries & cream. It also came with rhubarb, despite the fact that it wasn't on the menu. I also got a pot of tea, which I got three cups out of. Overall a very nice cafe, with a good atmosphere, friendly staff & yummy food.

Many moons ago I went to Lisbon Portugal and was told by numerous people to traipse an hour out of town to Belem and feast upon the Pastel de Belem (pastry of Belem), a custard tart. Not being a sweet tooth and not really a fan of the custard tart I was reluctant to go but was dragged there by a keen friend and insistent locals who drove us. After an hour of grumping, and some minutes exploring the beautiful area's statues, we arrived at the Belem cafe, which from the outside looked tiny and had some sort of tour bus fortress before it. As I passed into the surprisingly sprawling and magnificently appointed cafe, I added one final grump under my breath "this better be the best bloody custard tart in the world!" And it was! It was the best bloody custard tart in the whole world! More than ten years later myself and the same friend, now back in Adelaide, met up in Croydon after she'd spent about a year or so with many a Portuguese person in East Timor. Walking into the Queen Street cafe we both squealed, frightening the bawdy all male staff and causing a patron to drop her spoon. There underneath a mesh sheath sat a stack of Portuguese custard tarts. After jumping up and down, pointing, and clapping we ordered coffee and were asked "are you buying any tarts?" which was answered by a booming and definite "YES!" by the two of us in concert. Such was our obvious desire for the pastry that the staff watched us like hawks in case our obsessions lead to larceny. Sitting down with another very confused friend, we enjoyed our tarts with a decent cup of coffee. They were absolutely delicious, not the best custard tarts in the whole world but certainly the best custard tarts in Adelaide. So unless you're destined for Belem, head to the Queen Street Cafe and try the Pastel de Croydon.

Tomatos, Beans & Eggs. Yum!

This is a fav of mine for their food and the tasty tasty coffee. I particularly like it when I can snag an outside table and people watch. There is a real juxtaposition of people along little Queen street. It's nice to have a wander after brunch too. The service can lack a little, especially if you want to order a second round of coffees or pay the bill, at those points in time, it can be tricky to get some attention. Food is delish! Great portion sizes and really homely feeling food. Love love love the tomatos & beans topped with poached eggs. Tip for new players - add avocado.

Queen St has gentrified somewhat in the last four or five years, and even if I can't really afford to regularly frequent this area, it is very pleasant. The folks came to the rescue last week and took me to lunch at Queen Street Cafe. This is clearly a really lovely cafe. Lots of outdoor seating, nicely worn second hand furniture, wood floors and blackboard menus. There is a breakfast, lunch and sweets menu, full of things that are a few notches above most cafe dishes. But not so many notches that it is unrecognisable from the simple, familiar flavours one usually wants at this time of day. It has a definite Sunday cafe vibe - appropriate for prams and kids and grandparents and young couples. All the things that make this place lovely are closely related to the reasons I wouldn't come here on the regular though - the young couples with children crowd, the slightly above-average prices, the sweet and wholesome vibe. Anyway, the bill wasn't on me this time round. I got the beetroot and cheese salad, it was delicious but a little sweet for me. Mum got the warm lamb salad which was REALLY GOOD. Tender lamb, not fatty, delicious garlic yoghurt sauce and chickpeas. Dad got a very nicely cooked risotto and my sister got the steak sandwich. The food really couldn't be faulted, and neither could the service. The waiter was listening to us discuss what we wanted, and had our order mostly down before we even got to the counter.

Mmmm. Coffee.

I went to Queen Street cafe recently with a friend and his mum who is a regular: she's the kind of patron you dream about. Ridiculously friendly and super happy to spend her cash. Everyone knew her name. I felt like we were cafe A-listers: they took us immediately to the best table: it was kind of like Goodfellas but more nanna, less gangster. In many ways my friend's mum is the ultimate Queen St Cafe customer - older, wholesome but not dull, approachable and creative-minded. There are no rough edges at Queen St, it's all very pleasant and unpretentious. Dogs and families abound in the outside eating area. The food was excellent: I had poached eggs which were cooked to perfection and the coffee comes highly recommended too - extra points for being served with chocolate. My only qualm was that it was overpriced for not a particularly large serving size. The Queen Street area in Croydon is worth checking out: it's had something of a retro Renaissance (Retraissance?) over the last years and is jam packed with lots of vintage boutiques and cute little places to chill out on a lazy afternoon.

The menu is large and interesting enough with not too many "generic" options except the ones you want such as Chocolate Fondu for 2 or 4. I had a Banana, Peanut Butter, Cookies, Vanilla Custard, Creamy concoction in a jar which was topped with icecream very very delish and beautifully presented. My companions had waffles, ice-cream and a yummy chocolate and berry mousse/pudding. All were very pleased with their orders and there was a lot of "would you mind if I had a fork full?" going on. Coffee and desserts came out all together and our table was cleared in an appropriate amount of time after we had finished our plates. Being a group of 6 is probably a little too large for the small outdoor space on the sidewalk with round tables and various chair heights, but we made it work. The only down side to this spot is that the coffee is "good" not "awesome"

Luckily, a table had just left, with a quick clean of the table - we were seated. Decor - Candles! I love candlelit places at night, the chairs were also quite comfy, some places which have the same modern/sleek vibe to it like this place, have uncomfortable plastic or metal chairs, but we were seated in comfortable cushy bliss for your butt! We ordered - I had the Cherry Ripe Waffle and one of their 'house specialities' the St Louis Hot Chocolate' Waffles: I have to admit I was disappointed in the waffle, this is what pushed it down to 3 stars rather than 4. The waffle was warm, but it tasted like it had been reheated, or simply defrosted and stuck in a microwave. It wasn't crunchy or fresh, the texture was chewy and dry. I chose this dish because it mentioned white chocolate and almonds, it was presented on the plate, but the white chocolate tasted like melted white chocolate buttons from the local supermarket, too sugary and it hard almost hardened when I tried to scoop it up to put on my waffle. The 'French Vanilla Ice Cream' tasted distinctively like Bulla Vanilla ice cream. The cherries, and cherry glaze were delicious though. The Hot chocolate: Average more or less, it was a good hot chocolate, but I've had better in most other places, for a house special, again I was hoping for a bit more, but I might be a little harsh here, as my friend said he absolutely loved it. I'd order it again if I came here, and that is usually a good sign. They had free water available for patrons, in the water was such things as citrus; oranges, lemons, lychee, and strawberry, I thought that was a little fancy. It was a nice touch to the place. If I came here again, I'd avoid the waffles completely, as they were sub-par. But the venue is a nice place, with a positive atmosphere. Why no white hot chocolate? This makes me sad.

When that has happened I do try other types of coffee from his available collection, but mostly it's the Mexican Organic I go for. Ross and his team have a very good range and even though it is an expensive item, some things in life just have to be right before I can deal with them. I do not like the effects of instant coffee on my system, I almost always end up with a stomach gripe if I drink instant coffee, and you simply don't want to know about that. So I usually drink plunger coffee, it is one of my special things in life I suppose. As far as The Coffee Bean Shop goes they stock a range of implements to create coffee in - mostly the little Italian stove-top espresso jugs, but I tend not to favour them because they are made from aluminium and I understand that too much aluminium heated and exposed to something you then drink can cause some brain function problems over time - just something I read that has stuck. That's why I plunge, but you know, the occasional aluminium jug espresso coffee is no big deal. They do the grinding for you if you need it done, and they use a range of coffee packets that are a nice plane brown bag, so its a pretty sustainable system. Their selection of products includes some pre-ground coffee beans in little plastic pails with a lid, a variety of fragrant and tasty teas, blends of the tea, and the coffee and tea making equipment I mentioned above plus other stuff and some specialty sweets that you'd have with a beverage, or give as a gift - try a chocolate coated coffee bean - wow!

I am happy to see that this stall got updated as it is often one of the first stall you see when entering the Markets from the carpark escalators. The staff at this stall are always very friendly and happy to have a chat about the different varieties of coffee and what they taste like. You will find some amazing beans from all over the world. In particular my partner and I are quite fond of the Organic Mexican beans. Full flavour while being quite creamy and nutty. If you have a tighter budget, why not try their house blends. They are not too bad, the espresso blend is probably the best they offer in that range. If you need ground beans, they will grind them to the style that suits your brew equipment. We prefer to grind them at home to ensure that the coffee is fresh. If you are searching for a gift for a coffee lover, look no further! Purchase them an Aeropress which are sold here. They are a single cup air pressure plunger. They make the perfect brew away from home. My partner loves his and uses it at work every day!
