UPDATE: Hello Ryan. I spoke with the Quay General Manager earlier this week. I wanted to let someone know that she was inappropriately casual with me over the phone, especially considering the subject matter being so serious. She began the conversation by mocking me and then began to behave more professionally when she realized that I was serious. The general manager is usually where this type of behavior stops, and the customer is able to get some closure on the issue. Best of luck to you all, she should be reprimanded as well. Anne About two months ago or so I purchased $130.00 dollars in merchandise from Quay. The items were two pairs of sunglasses and two sunglasses accessories, the decorative chains that keep your glasses safe around your neck when you take them off. I had been window shopping at Quay for about a month before I decided to buy the glasses. During the few times I stopped by to look at sunglasses I was treated very poorly as an African American customer by Quay personnel. The first time stopped by, all the sales people got very quiet and no one helped me. There were three people and I was the only customer. They starred at me and avoided me. The personnel on the sales floor that day were an overweight white female, she was the manager, a Latino male, and an Asian female associate as well. Instead of responding to me immediately the white associate who I was to learn later was the store manager, decided to treat me like a person, after no one else was willing to at least say hello. She was friendly and unaware at how obvious all this behavior was to me. I asked her a question about the merchandise, as I had never seen a Quay store before. I was introduced to the brand while shopping at Nordstrom, and I thought the store was fabulous. Kind of a boutique style sunglasses store, very cute, very fun. The sales associates did not exemplify the brand at all. Stoic and serious, and quiet. Not lively, awake, and friendly. Anyway, the manager answered my question and I left. I returned a few weeks later to inquire on pricing since I had thought about the pair I wanted. This time a Latina employee with long brown curly hair answered my questions, she spoke to me at the door because of the safety concerns with the CORONA-VIRUS. She was very condescending to me, rough, and rude. My experience with her was terrible, she was unfriendly and the way she was treating me did not make any sense. Aside from behaving this way, the Latina employee suggested I put my name on the mailing list, and asked me for my name and email address. I told her "Anne", and the employee found this to be very interesting, she began staring at me harder, and looking at my clothing, and insinuating that this is not what Black people look like, and this is not what Black people are named, and this is not what people act like etc. A few weeks later, I had all the information I needed in terms of pricing for the Sunglasses, and I went by the Arden store to make my purchase. To make a long story short, I purchased the glasses and told the manager about my experience with the Latina employee a few weeks before. She expressed that she was shocked and disappointed and apologized, having no idea she behaved the same way towards me on my first visit. I also noticed that the Store Manager was wearing an outfit with her breasts exposed inappropriately. As she reached for my glasses I was interested in in the window, he breasts were all over the place. I don't think I've seen anyone dress this way who works in a professional capacity except maybe at a buy sell trade sort of clothing store. Her style is not appropriate for merchandise at the price point of my sunglasses. I decided to post this because after speaking with her about the Latina employee, I stopped by about a month or two after my sunglasses purchase and a new employee, treated me the same way, unfriendly, and stoic, as I entered the Quay store, wearing a pair of my $65.00 Quay's. And then he greeted the next customer in a friendly manner with a smile. This employee was Persian or Muslim. I noticed that all of the Sales associates look nice, dress well, but have very little understanding of how to relate to customers. I have a bad feeling that the store manager I described is also the Hiring manager. Lastly, you have no idea how terrible it is to be considered too Black, and then not Black enough depending on the employee assisting me, like that is even relevant! Lastly, I am mind-blown that the Store Manger allows this type of behavior from her employees during the CORNIA-VIRUS when businesses are closing left and right. Quay cannot afford to treat the Black customer this way, you are welcome for my $130.00! I cannot for the life of me figure out why the Store Manager has the store staffed with 3 to 4 employees at time, when sales are down, and customers come by infrequent. This is not my issue, Being treated the right way as a Black customer will always take precedent.

I usually stick with the same phone for years because I just don't like change. But it didn't take me long to adjust to the newness and I couldn't wait to find the perfect cover and screen protector. That's when Joe K took me straight to the Accessory Store in Elk Grove. The minute we walked in, I knew I would find what I was looking for here. Even the products online just didn't wow me. This store had a huge number of assorted cases on display for most brands, makes, and models. The clerk on staff was very helpful and knowledgeable about their merchandise. I had a hard time making my selection, but I finally found a bling style rhinestone encrusted case that I had always wanted! I also got a screen protector to go with it. The nice young man who was assisting us, put it all together for me at no additional charge. Joe K also purchased a vehicle cup holder/cell phone stand and two car chargers. The prices were very reasonable. Never did I think that we would have a fulfilling shopping trip at a phone accessory store! Now, I feel better about protecting my investment from possible future damage. It's no fun being a klutz!

Almost immediately, another staff member sharply asked, "Can I help you?" in a tone that felt more like I was being scolded than helped. She then told me--again in a raised, hostile voice--that I needed to sign in. The entire interaction was abrupt and unsettling. I felt singled out and uncomfortable, like I had done something wrong just by being there. What made it more painful was what happened next. Two other customers walked in and were greeted warmly, calmly, and with genuine friendliness. The difference in treatment was stark. As a Black woman, that contrast didn't feel accidental--it felt like bias, and it honestly hurt. I want to be clear: the young woman who did my threading was kind and did a good job. But the way I was treated before that left me feeling unwelcome and disrespected. I live nearby and try to support local businesses, but I will not spend money in a place where I'm made to feel like I don't belong. No customer should walk into a business and leave feeling the way I did.
