Joey came to my home, measured everything, and sent me a quote that night for $7,000 to remove my popcorn ceilings + $1,100 for the certificate from the county. He was very professional and explained the process nicely. I also called Synergy for a quote. They suggested we do a patch test for $50 to see if it was asbestos. I was sure it was, but agreed. Well, the test came back negative. Synergy came back, did patch tests in every room, and they all came back negative. Synergy said I could use any contractor to remove the popcorn ceilings since it was not asbestos. Out of curiosity I asked what they would have charged me and they said about $4,000. My general contractor is now going to do the work for about $2k. Quality Asbestos Control is too expensive and they didn't offer a patch test which ended up saving me a lot of money. read more

In the Bay Area, it's hard sometimes to get the attention of home services when you only have a small job. I can't even remember all the folks we've had come to do an estimate on something and then they don't even bother sending a quote. I had the exact opposite experience with Joe and his crew from Quality Asbestos Control. We just had one room with asbestos in the popcorn ceiling (we did a mail-in test we bought on Amazon). Joe came out to our home in Belmont at our convenience the very next day to look things over and estimate the work. He advised us on some small complications with the crown molding and explained the process. He followed up with an estimate the next day. I called to schedule, and again, they were able to schedule something convenient for me. The crew came on time, they were extremely professional and the work took exactly as much time as they said. The air quality inspector came that afternoon and we were completely finished by 4 pm. Costs were totally in line with all the research I did online of what these things cost. I've never left a yelp review before but had to give a review on Joe. I spoke to him only once but he made such a great impression on me. I had questions on how to remove potential asbestos in a home I was planning to buy. Turns out I didn't need to do anything as Joe explained it was a "forever roof". When I asked what if there were certain areas that needed fixing he suggested that I see a roofing contractor first. I would only need to see him for extreme cases. Speaking to Joe was like speaking to a trusted friend...one that you know he knows what he's talking about and that he's not going to say things just to get your business. I wish I could give them 10 stars. And, this is a long review...but for the type of service and costs, I think certain things need to be said. In remodeling our home, we found old tiles and linoleum that had asbestos or asbestos materials. Always one to slightly freak out at these things, I was on a mission to find a contractor or company that would remove these materials. Imagine my surprise at how difficult this task turned out to be. There were not many places listed online and those that were all had bad reviews. What to do? I eventually found myself on the Better Business Bureau's website where I found several contractors. After calling a few, I finally got Quality Asbestos on the line and that's when I spoke to Joe McCurdy. After speaking with Joe for a few minutes, I was totally ready to hire this company. Joe explained the process, the types of asbestos in homes and possible solutions. He also offered to come to my home within 2 hours to give me a quote. Score! Within an hour and a half, Joe was at our home looking over our floors and offering his opinions and advice. What should have been only a 20 minute quote, turned into an hour as Joe had so many useful ideas to offer in our remodel. He also offered money saving tips on how to reduce the cost of the asbestos removal. (How many contractors truly are trying to save you money???) In my due diligence, I attempted to get other quotes but was very unsatisfied with the responses I received. One environmental service company in Oakland even tried to talk trash about Quality Asbestos, saying they had never heard of them and that they were a fly by night company. After this, the guy tried to get me to hire to him to oversee the work Joe & his guys were going to do. Turns out, the smack talker's company doesn't even have a contractors license OR registered to do asbestos removal in the state of California. WTF??? Right then and there I knew I was going with the right company. The guys from Quality came out and took care of business. When I came home to inspect the work, I was so happy. Clean and bare concrete floors. I know it sounds crazy to be happy over concrete floors, but you had to see what we were working with. My floors were now beautiful and safe for us. In regards to pricing and quotes, Quality is not the cheapest but they are not the most expensive either. I found their pricing to be very fair especially for the work they were doing. All their employees are paid industry standards, which I like. Additionally, during the quote, Joe told me which things could be lived with and which things had to be absolutely removed. He never forced any decision on me and actually mentioned that some of the floor I could just seal with new flooring and the asbestos wouldn't be a problem. I loved that there were no fear tactics or pressure to use his company. Joe also worked with the numbers to try and make it as affordable as possible for us. Quality Asbestos did an awesome job. All the guys I met were extremely polite, knowledgeable and clean. Joe is like the big brother that knows everything and Alex (one of the team) was very polite and super patient with all my questions. I felt like I'd known them all my life. There are some things in home remodeling that you can cut corners on, but this is not one of them. If your health is important to you, Quality Asbestos is the only company to hire. During a kitchen remodel, discovered a vertical gas water heater flue vent with asbestos that required removing. I wanted to deal with it quickly so the general contractor's work would not be interrupted. As I needed to do this work, it made sense to also have all of the asbestos heating ducts (approx. 100 ft) removed from the crawl space. I called Quality Asbestos Control in the morning and sent photos to the owner, Joe. He reviewed them and gave me a written quote by email that evening. By the following morning, we had agreed to terms and their work crew arrived at the job site a few hours later. Field Supervisor Caesar was very attentive and easy to work with. They were careful at the job site, completed the work within 4 hours, and cleaned up after themselves. Bottom line, very responsive and professional company, and their price proposal was quite reasonable. I couldn't have been happier with the results. I was told by an hvac contractor that all my duct work had asbestos in it and gave me a quote for $3800. Something didn't seem right so I decided to call Quality Asbestos Control they were great on the phone and set up an appointment for me. Unfortunately I had to be at work so my wife was home when they arrived. Joe was very honest explained to my wife we don't need to re-do all the duct work or buy a new system. I just bought a house built in the 50s. I found out that the air duct insulation materials are torn and in poor condition in my crawl space. I had thought that it was asbestos. I called Joe at Quality Asbestos Control and we setup an appointment for him to come look at it. After thoroughly checking it he told me that they were all fiberglass and no asbestos present in the air duct insulation materials. He didn't even charge me for anything. The date on this review is way off, because I forgot to post it when they did the work for me in 2/2013. I have a ranch house built in 1968 with asbestos in the popcorn ceiling texture. One room had faux-exposed beams (made out of 1x6) nailed to the ceiling, which were warping, detaching from the ceiling, and coming apart. There was no way to make them look right, but they had crushed lines into the popcorn ceiling, and those lines were too big to touch up. So I hired Quality Asbestos Control to remove the popcorn ceiling from that one room in my house. Luckily, this was the room with the sliding glass door into my backyard. They covered the walls and floor with plastic (including sheeting it off from the rest of the house), set up their airlock into the backyard, and pulled out the popcorn (and the faux beams). They were in and out in less than one day. One thing to be aware of is that this sort of job involves taping plastic sheeting to the walls with duct tape, which will cause some minor damage to painted walls. This wasn't a problem for me since that room had other drywall repair that needed to be done (and a ceiling that needed to be re-textured, primed, and painted), but it's something to be aware of if you're having this done. Everyone involved from Quality Asbestos Control warned me about that multiple times, which I appreciate. My only regret is that I didn't have these guys in to remove the popcorn ceilings from the entire house before I moved in. Next time I move, I will. read more

Quality Asbestos Control in Union City was referred to me by a company I had come in and clean up my attic and replace my insulation which had not been replaced in over 30 years! I had old asbestos ducts which needed replacing badly as they were the original ducts put in by the original builders back in 1962. I had a new furnace installed two years ago at Christmas time and since it was a holiday I was lucky to have someone come then to put in the furnace when they did so the ducts were not replaced at that time. Quality Asbestos Control needed to coordinate with another company which needed to come the day after the asbestos duct system was removed and they did just that, working well together as 'one' company even though' two' were involved. (asbestos removal and duct installment companies) They were prompt, the quote was reasonable, cleaned up after themselves and were 'in and out' within an hour or so. These guys just finished up the project they were doing for me and I couldn't be happier. We had a kitchen remodel project that we were working on and found out we had an asbestos flue that needed to be removed. To our dismay this was one more cost we weren't planning on. I called Quality Asbestos Control based on the recommendation of another Yelper. They were very nice to deal with. Clarence came out that same day to take a look. I had my quote, got the job scheduled and was good to go until . . . the next construction snafu! We opened the wall to find yet another pipe we didn't know was in there. I called Clarence and he came out first thing to look to see if it was also an asbestos product. Luckily for us it was not. We had to reschedule 3 times and they were as kind and accommodating as can be. We needed to replace the furnace in our 1939 home, and so figured it was best to get rid of all of the asbestos covered ducts at the same time. Our furnace contractor (Richard Grodecki) highly recommended Quality, and so I gave Joe a call. He came out to take a look and gave a quote. Within a couple of days, Joe's brother (Caesar) and a crew of 2-3 others came out, taped off all the vents, and within a few hours, had all of the ducts removed and hauled away. The house isn't huge, but it is spread over many levels, and they did a great job removing all of the ducts that were accessible. Things were left clean and ready for the new furnace to be put in. My landlord called Quality Asbestos to inspect my place for mold after I informed him in writing of a severe mold problem due to a leaking roof. There were three approximately 5'x3' areas of wall that were affected and an area approximately 2'x2' in the ceiling that was affected. Multiple baseboards were swollen from water damage. My landlord removed all the visible mold before Quality Asbestos arrived. I understand that the surface mold was no longer visible, but Quality Asbestos took no samples and did not look behind any surfaces that were affected by the leak. If you are a landlord hoping to cover up a problem, by all means use this company. read more

Not worth your time, I spoke with Clarence which made it sound very good. The quote looked good and he had a good story to tell. However, I never received a phone call to confirm the appointment the day before. I am a very busy person so I had to take a day off from work at my own expense. On the day of the appt, I received a call from the crew saying they had broken down and wanted to know if I can do the job the day after because the crew's car broke down. After I requested to speak with Clarence to find out whats going on he then gave a different story. He said the reason why they could not make my appt was because the crew was still working on a previous job. Apparently that was a bigger job so my quote was not worth their time. After called him on their lies all he could do is apologize. He didn't try to make it right by providing suggestions. In summary, I would totally avoid this crew because they are not professional at all. If this is the way they handle communication I really don't want to find out their quality of work or any issues that may have to be communicated after the job. My home is an older home (1965) and had all original duct and insullation work. I wanted to put in all new HVAC duct work but was told by the home inspector that I would need to have the crawl space cleaned up first. So I called Quality Asbestos Control and spoke with Clarence McCurdy. I explained to him that I recently had a home inspection done and what the recommendation was. He came out the next day and crawled under my house to assess the situation. In coming back up he said there was nothing to worry about as he saw nothing of concern. He explained that there was some old insulation called "air cell" which did have some asbestos in the material but because it was not damaged it was not really of concern. Clarence said he didn't necessarily see any glaring reason to remove the air cell as it didn't create any safety concerns, but if I wanted it gone he could remove it. So I asked many questions regarding this material and the true risks of it. He said ALL older homes and even some newer homes have asbestos in the building materials and it all depends on whether it is airborne or not. He reiterated that for my home it was not airborne and so he explained every step in detail as to how he would remove the air cell making sure it never got airborne. He also reviewed his qualifications (over 30 years doing this) and detailed some of his prior jobs with this material. He spent about 1 hour walking through the misconceptions and unwarranted fears of this material and how many home inspectors (whom are NOT qualified to opine on this) drum up unfounded fears for home owners. Long story short, Clarence's team came out and did lots of prep work to insulate the work space and insure that no leakage would occur into the living space in case anything went awry. Clarence's team closed off all ducts into the house, used thick plastic to insulate the workspace, wet down the material, carfully removed the air cell into lock-tight plastic bags, and then used a special polimer spray to seal all surfaces. They then used an industrial HEPA filter to suck up all air from the crawl space as a finishing touch. All material was then carefully removed from the premises, plastic coverings removed and full clean up of any trace was done. After the work was performed, Clarence guaranteed that all was good with nothing to worry about going forward. read more

Joe is very professional, highly knowledgeable and experienced. He has been in the abatement business a long time that's reason he has cal/osha # 71. This means he was one of the first companies to establish this type of business. When day came for the work to be done. The crew were courteous and efficient in getting the work done. Even when separate company they use to have the air test performed, that also was coordinated efficiently. All communications with the company went well and they responded timely.
