I took my desktop tower to Central Computers, not knowing whether the monitor, the cables or the computer were at fault. Pedro quickly determined that the computer was fine -- it was NVIDIA trying (with no warning) to update a driver that brought my system to a halt. He and Stirling monitored the update, then NVIDIA started a second one, which seemed stuck. Stirling downloaded the update directly from NVIDIA and finally got the job done. The wait (about 2 hours) was well worth it to regain my sanity. Pedro and Stirling were very kind, explaining everything and chatting with me when I wasn't browsing the aisles. I promptly brought it over to his home that he works out of. He called me back two hours later, and told me what I had suspected: my hard drive was fried. He sent me down to the local computer store to buy another hard drive (under $50.00) for a 500G), and to bring him another external hard drive, of which I had as well, and any software that I wanted reinstalled. By the next day, he had retrieved all the files from the corrupted drive and put it on the new drive as well as installing the software I work with (Quickbooks, Adobe Acrobat, Office) and then reset up my computer and gave it a tune up. When I brought it home, my 9 year old Dell Vostro worked like a charm. It was faster and quieter than its ever been. My old Dell has a new lease on life.
