We built our pool and spa with Puryear Custom Pools from December 2024 through March 2025. At the start, our experience with their designer was positive. However, things quickly became disappointing once construction began. During installation, we had to make sudden design changes because of incorrect slope measurements made by Puryear's team--an error that cost us additional money on a retaining wall. Since completion, we've faced multiple problems, including holes in the concrete deck, lighting issues, improper plumbing settings, and now two major leaks (somewhere in the main plumbing or scuppers and gunite). The main reason for this review is to highlight the company's poor quality control and lack of follow-through on warranty repairs. Over the past month, we've made numerous attempts to identify and fix the leaks--none successful. Many of our phone calls go to voicemail with no reply. On several occasions, we were told a technician would be out to look at the issue, then no one shows up. One contractor admitted he was instructed to "cover up" the leaking pipes instead of correcting the leak properly. So now, we have exposed pipes, trenches with accumulated water, and high water bills from the leaks. As retirees who invested a substantial portion of our savings into this project, we are truly disappointed. We chose Puryear because of their reputation as a "Top Builder." Unfortunately, that confidence was misplaced. We can't, in good faith, recommend Puryear Custom Pools to others. This review is regarding CUStOMER SERVICE......I have been trying to have someone from Puryear Custom Pools respond to a text since April 7, 2026. The customer service is horrible but they just don't get it! I sent another text message on April 25, Thursday April 30, May 2 and again on May 4th all with no response. How can you stay in business if your customer service is lacking? Choose your builder wisely because the product may be wonderful but if customer service SUCKS.....you're screwed especially if you use PURYEAR CUSTOM POOLS. read more

I wish I could give Puryear a 0 Star. They installed my pool several years ago and currently service my pool. Their pool service is terrible, I currently have a cartridge pool filter on the side of my pool that the lid wasn't put back on and it was leaking water all over the place and making a funny noise, my hot tub has no water in it and I called and left a voicemail, plus text the number that their phone system had me text with no response. I can share numerous texts and emails I have sent to their service number that ends in 5169 - I never get a response. I've emailed Kevin Terry before multiple times about fungus issues that happened right after they are the ones that cleaned my pool. I've emailed Brian Drake over the years, this company is terrible. Never have done anything to make up for all the mistakes they have made. I have to call them and email them at least 4-5 times a year about additional problems with my pool and equipment and it takes them weeks to get back to me and at least multiple calls. I would not work with them if I were you and I will not recommend them to anyone. In fact I have had 2-3 people ask me who I built my pool with - not because they saw my pool but because they knew I had a pool and I told them not to use the company I used. As I am looking back at my texts from last year that they never respond to, someone also left a bottle of cyanuric acid laying on my table in my backyard also, we have small kids that go out there and play all the time and it was right by water bottles, sunscreen bottles, etc. I couldn't do justice to continue all the stuff they have done over the years but I will be posting on ever review site there is and BBB. read more

Updating review to reflect our experience post build completion. Puryear shifts their point of contact from project manager during the build process to "Customer service." We were assigned to a manager named Jake...which has been a communication challenge at best. For at least 2 months, we have struggled to get he and his team to complete the list of issues in order to get our pool fully operational. Those issues include (but not limited to): -our pump has been working under high pressure...they think this is due to debris in filters...but have been waiting weeks. -still can't get someone to epoxy our coping. -our spa loses water when bubblers on on...Jake says this is because jets are too big. Then, he changed his position to this is normal. -water overfill valve was not installed properly...not sure when this will be repaired I am confident this will all be done, but communication has been extremely difficult. While speed and communication hasn't been the strongest at Puryear, they have built a great product at a reasonable price. read more

I've bought a pool from Puryear pools December 19 2020. The pool was completed by May 15th. We've enjoyed our pool greatly. Unfortunately October 24th we noticed our pool was leaking water. The warranty was out. UGHH As you can imagine this was very disappointing because we are still paying on this pool. I kinda lost my cool a little bit and decided to use another pool company to find out where my pool was leaking. This company performed a leak test and told me my pool was leaking in 3 separate places. I was in disbelief. After thinking on what to do next I decided to contact Puryear again. This time I reached out to the Kevin the GM. I explained my frustration and he understood completely. He said he wanted to come out and look at it himself. So he showed up a couple of days later with his Service Manager Jay. These guys started digging and we noticed that in one spot that i was told was leaking was dry as a bone. No water to be found. This was the week before Thanksgiving. Kevin offered to have his guys come out and do a little more investigating. This is where it really gets good. They put a young man name Brandon in charge of trying to find this leak or leaks. He has showed up at my house at least 10 or more times so far conducting different test. Then coming by the following day to see how the water levels were. Keep in mind. I'm out of Warranty. Kevin didn't have to do this. Brandon has been a Godsend for me and has showed me through his due diligence that he really cares about my pool. I believe we are to the point of having found out where the leak is. ( it Doesn't look to be 3 leaks at all) so it's looking like I was lied to by the other company who charged me $350 for the leak test and wanted to charge me another two grand to fix these imaginary leaks. No matter what happens next , I can't tell you how much these guys have restored my faith in the service industry. Thank you Kevin, Jay and most of all Brandon. You guys are awesome. I highly recommend anyone to trust this company. They aren't perfect as most service companies aren't. But they are dang sure heads and shoulders above the rest!! read more

Build process was wonderful. 4 year-old pool. The after build communication has been so-so at best and has completely gone down hill in the last year. Service tickets maybe being addressed a few weeks later - pretty sure we ended up with a much more expensive repair due to lack of attention to begin with several months ago. Most recent issue: Service ticket a MONTH ago and 2 phone calls later with no information on when service could happen. Requested a manager phone call, he will only email me. We also have DOUBLE CHARGES for our weekly maintenance they won't address, and skipped weekly maintenance altogether last week with no response as to why or refund/credit for missed service. We have found new service and still working on getting refunded the money they owe us. read more

Very similar to other comments, our build was fine but the experience and service with this company since then has been horrible. The equipment has broken multiple times in the 2 years we have had the pool. It then takes very long time to get someone out to look at it. I finally called another company and will pay out of pocket to have fixed in under 1 day what this company said would take 2.5 weeks to come out and fix. Our experience with this company has been terrible. To our own fault we should have left them after our pool was built. Customers service is terrible. From building our pool without shutoff valves to maintenance running our pool pump with the valves shut for days. We have had problems with our decking, plumbing, tile work. When the quarterly service was done they failed to clean our filter. Had to have the company come back out one month later and charged us for it. The manager acknowledged there was a problem with our decking and planned to fix and now will not return calls. Stay away from this company! You will regret it if you don't I promise you! read more

Pool was finished in July 2024 and we have been complaining since October about a leak in the wall with one of the waterfalls. It is now March 2025 and still cannot get anyone out to look at it. I had Puryear build our pool 14 years ago, and the process was a good one. Over the years since, I have used separate pool cleaning services for weekly service and most minor pool equipment repairs. Recently, when I had some issues with a pool fountain and an autofill, I opted to contact Puryear for service. So 14 years later, I can say that they are still a great company with a lot of great people! When calling for service, Bailey does an amazing job understanding the issues I have had, and both Jake and George in the service department have been awesome at responding to get things fixed. It is impressive to me that after all these years, this company still takes such good care of its customers just as they did when they originally built the pool. EDIT May 2021, pool is getting worse. Aqua bright peeling off in chunks. I had contacted EcoFinish about the product. They say it wasn't prepped correctly. I really wish Puryear would have had a civil sit down talk with me, owner Jason should have came out the second time he was asked instead of ignoring. If a business never asked for the small final payment it's because they know they F'd your pool up! But when you call text and email how it's falling apart, they won't even be civil and talk about it, instead just call me a thief! I so wish I could have taken them to small claims court, and I would have except it started peeling after my statue of limitations. read more

We had an issue with a valve failure. After some inspections and warranty questions, Mr Satterwhite and Puryear replaced the damaged heater and valve. He said and I quote," you're our customer and we will to take care of this. " The valve had a warranty which caused the heater to fail and the valve company only wanted to replace the valve and not the heater. Puryear and Mr Satterwhite came through for us!!! Thank you!!! Terrible experience. I should have read these reviews prior, but I selected them because they were on the Good Contractors List. The good news is now I also know not to trust that list. Highlights from my pool remodel: Most expensive quote out of 4. Pool chemistry is super important for the first few weeks. I only knew this because another company made a big deal of it. Contractor John didn't address it at all. When I asked him what the plan for after maintenance was he said that he would balance the chemicals for a few weeks. I have video of him walking into my backyard and dumping a gallon of startup in, then leaving within a minute. He did this once. Didn't check chemicals or address the "heavy scaling" that was going on at the moment. I have proof of that as well. In a nutshell, after seeing that, I could tell that he just didn't care about taking care of my investment. When they didn't have acceptable coping (John admitted that it was "the bottom of the barrel") that we had agreed to, I went to stone yards that John provided to choose my own. When I chose silver mist coping he said that it was more expensive than the other color and would cost 500 more. I said okay. The next day I thought how weird that he knew exactly how much more it would cost for my pool. So I called the stone yard and they told me it was the exact same price as the first material that I had already paid for. When I called John on his lie he folded pretty quickly. So unethical. I have text messages about that. It's horrible to feel like you are being tricked out of money and hard to trust anyone's intentions after they do this. Last, the worst is that there are plaster issues with my pool, big, visible problems. I was complaining about them for over a month with no one addressing them. When I finally called the office to complain, after much back and forth, they offered to acid wash my pool. Acid washing is stripping the top layer off of your plaster. Obviously I don't want that to happen to my new plaster, especially not to correct a problem that they caused. Even with providing much independent proof that this damages the plaster, their only response is that I should trust what they want to do because they are experts. Well, if they are experts then why didn't they get it right the first time? I think it's understandable that I don't trust them after the behavior that I've seen. Their warranty will be up before their "fix" causes me problems. Looong story short, they are refusing to do anything except for that, and the "Good Contractors" won't make them do anything but that. If you want to pay the most, for a pool with problems, then you can get a quote from them. I would look elsewhere. read more

I don't feel they stand by their work. Beyond what I feel "doing everything they can to get out of a warranty issue." I personally feel this company really could care less. Let me address two issues. My home had a gunite pool installed. It cracked near the top the 2nd month. So they had to repair it with a patch that was no where near the same color. Not to mention now it has cracked around the repair. As the new homeowner I called to complain... They came out and said they would get back to me. Never heard back. Typical customer service from Puryear as this has happened before. 2nd issue: Yesterday my pool pump was shutting down when I touched the panel. It would sometimes work and sometimes not. So I had to call my Home Warranty to have it looked at thinking it was the pump. Nope. It was their shoddy wire installation. Who leave wires bare so they can rub? Thanks for the $100 bill I had to pay. I'd call to complain. But as usual, I'd just get blown off. There are many pool builders out there. You'll be happier in the long run if you choose someone else. Very disappointed! *** Follow up: 12:55 pm August 24, 2016. The owner Jennifer called me irate and threatened that she would sue me because of my review. Her words, "Let me make this clear, you are not my customer." She spent the entire time yelling at me and never letting me speak. Accusing me of slander and liable. She also accused me of lying about the wiring. (Jason the pool guy is the only person that has ever opened the panel when he installed a new light) how come he never noticed the wires? As I am typing this review. Jennifer called me again to come at me about the date I quoted (since I am the second owner) about when my pool was installed and when I purchased the home. She is right it was 14 months in the heat of her coming at me I misquoted the date. I told her "the pool was installed in September, I bought the home in November." I purchased the home in November 2013. Pool was installed in September 2012. I never got to explain that mixup as she never let me speak and said "now I don't believe you." This I agree was the date. Sometimes hard to think when you have someone just coming at you. Puryear states they have a 3-year warranty. Were my issues under warranty? Wiring: As far as the wiring (as of today) it would not be under warranty had I been the first owner or not. However this is a pic of the wiring, which Jennifer said they didn't install the wiring. If this is true then they didn't . But if you are the pool company aren't you responsible for the pool itself? She states they are not. You as the consumer can make that decision. The gunite crack: the pool had a crack just 2-months after the installation. Puryear fixed it with a tan unspeckled repair. That repair has cracked. I called to have it inspected last year. It was cracked when they came out under the normal 3-years (if it's not under warranty because it's not transferable then it's technically not under warranty and she's right) then they are doing what I first started. Using the "not the first owner" clause to get out of the warranty. You as the consumer have to be the judge. I will tell you I have had another pool person look at the repair and the cracks that occurred in that same wall. His opinion is that it was poured to thin. Now Jennifer told me that it happened because they didn't pour the pool decking and there was no mastic. I didn't own the home when it was poured so I don't know. I do feel that a pool shouldn't crack just 2-months after it was poured. So now the owner threatens to sue me. If she wants to sue me fine. I've copied the other negative reviews on here and will submit them in court. I never put my true feelings in this review and told her that I was holding back. Here response... "Are you threatening me?" No I was trying to make things right. In fact I started our first conversation saying it was good customer service as the owner to call me; this is before she barraged me and wouldn't let me talk. So the threat to sue me is out there. Fine, I'll counter sue her for what I believe has now caused my pool to crack further. I've been told it could be in the high thousands to repair. I've left that alone for now. But if she wants too I'll get another pool repair estimate that states they believe it has cracked because of the initial install. These are the facts. I would have liked to had a civil conversation. And still would Jennifer. So if you would like to call to discus and not irately hang up on me. I'm always willing to take your call. I can be civil if you can. Really disappointed it had to get this crazy. So nice to know that a business will threaten to sue their customers. But then again, I guess I'm not... "you're not one of our customers." Puryear started digging our pool in May of 2019. They completed the project in July of 2019. It was two months of poor communication, trash left in our yard, and poor quality workmanship. We spent nearly$100,000 and that evidently wasn't enough for "top notch " customer service. Three years (and two months) later, we are spending another $5000 to replace pool equipment (part of which was installed incorrectly) and to repair cracks in the plaster. You would think a "high quality" product would last longer than three years. read more

I do not recommend using Puryear Custom Pools. I am so thankful that our build was a relatively simple one, yet even so, every single step of our pool build I've had to deal with some issue or another. There was damage to my property as well as my neighbors which I've had to hire my own contractors to fix on my own dime because of their lack of care. A variety of incomplete or substandard work which is not apparent to Puryear but will be incumbent on you to point out and insist it be remedied correctly. I was incorrectly billed for hours of rock work that was performed at another property entirely. Basically if you like stress then PCP is the company for you. There was always something, and instead of PCP acting as the general contractor and leading quality control and oversight of their contractors, I have had to correct these issues myself. Their entire operation is organized around completing as many pools as possible. The one general contractor PCP assigns to you is jumping around from sight to sight. Expect him to be there make sure the contractors show up, if he shows up himself, leave, and then take your complaints when things are broken or not right. Then their contractors will show up randomly and you will need to point out what needs to be fixed and how to do it and if they can cut corners to save a buck they will. Save yourself a lot of stress and look elsewhere. read more

We worked with John, we really liked his honesty and he provided great advice. Our job took 3 months (Mid Dec - Mid Mar) to complete which included some delays due to rain and cold weather. We had work completed on our existing pool - Plaster upgraded with Quartz/Pebble Finish, changed our pool pebble deck with a smooth overlay, waterfall work, extended patio, and added a gas fire pit. Total job $25K. John and his team did a nice job on our remodel. John responded when contacted. Appreciated John's vision on our fire pit, it turned out much nicer than we expected. Our patio overlay spray turned out great - hoping the color does cool the deck as mentioned. With our upgrade we paid the money to set up our existing equipment to be operated by App - best thing ever. I can now turn on my hot tub, filter, cleaner, all from my app. Didn't go all the way with being able to turn on my fire pit with my app though...John took before and after pictures with the company drone and later shared with me - which was super cool! With that said, one thing consistent throughout the process was the lack of communication. Having to initiate the communication to determine when tasks were scheduled to happen then follow up after each item completed in the process was annoying. Perhaps a list of instructions upon the job completion could be left at the job site or perhaps emailed to the owner. In addition, sign off by the project lead indicating the work was inspected and they signed off on the work. I felt as if when we brought up concerns on items it was the first John was hearing of it which was concerning, that was my perception anyways. When re-filling the pool the work crew turned on the water and left it running - thank goodness we weren't out of town, had a late meeting, etc; Just came home and water was running. We complained of the darker ring in the middle of our pool by the drain a couple times after the replaster, not resolved - I mean what can you do now? We had some re-work on the waterfall as the water didn't cascade as I would expect, took a couple visits but got resolved. When the one guy came to spray the deck, he taped up all the outside windows, back door, the day before. Okay - I have dogs and they use the backyard - it was just an inconvenience that I didn't know about until it happened. After the deck was sprayed - again - how long can we not walk on it? Any special instructions? Nothing. Again inconvenient. Listen, I'm enjoying our backyard improvements - just improve the information exchange with the customer. A timeline, expectations, sign off etc; the customer shouldn't chase the information. read more

Three items needed to be replaced in my Puryear pool at the same time. The pump, the heater and a control panel. They were Jandy equipment and had three year guaranteed. The pool was three 1/2 years old. Puryear pools refused to help me in this matter citing the equipment missed the warranty by 6 months. This was three items not one!!! It came to just under $5,000!!! I am very unhappy with Puryear pools for installing equipment that didn't last long. The company kept blaming Jandy. Well, who bought their inferior equipment in the first place? Puryear built the pool that came with the house that I bought. I've used them for weekly/quarterly maintenance for about 6 months now. It's great to know that everything is taken care of and I know that they've been here because they leave a card documenting the chemical levels and what was done. Recently, I had a problem with the spa/pool heater (not working and leaking water). I discovered it after-hours (of course) but called and left a message. John called me first thing the next morning and had someone on their way right then. By the time I got home from work that evening, everything was fixed! After much consideration and meeting with various contractors we opted to work with Puryear Custom Pools to build our backyard oasis so my wife would be close to water Never being a pool owner - I knew very little about pools until I started inquiring with several other pool builders. I found in working with Brian Drake that Puryear includes more things in their standard pools that others list as upgrades. I know I must have made about 10 change orders even up until the last week or so of the build and Puryear was the most accommodating. The price they quoted for the pool was the exact price we paid - not a single upcharge. After construction began - they took into consideration several factors such as running a drain all the way around the house as opposed to digging under our paverstone drive way to avoid potential problems in the future. I know that was costly - but having them absorb that expense to ensure I didn't have problems with the driveway in the future was exceptional. Mickey was my main contact from the initial inspection to the final sweeping of the deck. Mickey kept me in the loop on timelines and even though we had some considerable rain - he maintained as close to the timeline as mother nature would allow. We went with about 1100 SF of Cabridge Cobblestone Pavers for the decking and we were so glad we did. Gave the backyard decking some real character. Brian also assisted me with a design to maximize the size of the pool which was 82 perimeter feet 11,300 gallons to maximize the size of the pool, give it some character and maximize entertaining space. Even with a pool in the yard - it looks considerably larger than it did prior with just grass and a small tree. Brian recommended some ideas for the pool design to include a raised rear beam that really made the pool stand out. We went with a light color Aquabright lifetime guarantee and upgraded on the pump. Even with the pump running 23 hours a day - we haven't noticed an increase in our electric bill. Was well worth the small increase in cost for the better pump and the color of the Aquabright gives the pool a tropical look. In addition to the having tight access to the yard Mickey and his crew only went a minimal amount into my neighbors properly. They had to use a bobcat to shuttle so I didn't have to take down a mature live oak tree. Literally - the clearance was about 3 inches between the two sides. If I would have known the process was so easy and they were so exceptional to work with - I would have put the pool in my yard six years ago. Terrible service. They installed a brand new $2k pump and a year later, the pump quit. My pool turned green. Puryear would not replace it or stand behind their work. The manufacturer (Jandy) came to my home and looked at it and said the pump was not installed correctly and because of that, warranty is voided. I now have to fork out another $2000 for a pump because Puryear doesn't know what they're doing and they will NOT stand behind their incompetent work. I'm hiring someone else to do the job they couldn't do correctly in the first place. Very shady business. Don't hire them. read more

We relocated from the northeast to Texas in May. We wanted a pool but did not know any companies in the area. We began searching in February and were recommended to look at Puryear. Best decision we made. We did most of our planning remotely and working with Brandon Cooper was awesome. The design process was extremely smooth and informational. Brandon has years of experience and his insight was extremely helpful. His design was beautiful and the finish product shows it. Brandon was always available to answer even the most simple of questions for us. Highly recommend working with him if looking for a new pool. When it came to the construction of our pool, Tim Freerksen is one of the best project managers I have ever worked with. Tim completed our pool in 60 days! He is on top of every step and his level of communication is great. Being first time pool owners, Tim answered every little question we had without hesitation. The experience with Puryear Pool continues to get worse and worse. They built our pool in 2019. They started the project in May and came out to do and redo repairs until November of 2019. In April of 2022, we noticed a crack in the plaster. Plaster is evidently not covered under warranty. We also discovered the Salt Cell was not working correctly. Puryear accused us of installing the salt cell backwards, so the warranty was voided. We had to send pictures to the Salt Cell Manufacturer for them to tell us it was IMPOSSIBLE for the salt cell to be installed correctly due to the plumbing pipes being installed wrong. Puryear came out and redid the plumbing, but we had to call another company to replace the salt cell. Puryear charged us $850 to repair the crack in the Plaster. The crack is back less than a year after it was repaired. Puryear refuses to come out because I "gave them a bad review". We have the AquaBright finish on our pool So now we will need to contact Ecofinish to find another distributor who will honor the warranty on the AquaBright and possibly fix the plaster. This company is highly unprofessional and does not fix their mistakes. Beware. read more

This pool company seemed so legit when we got going then the miscommunication between the people in the office and the people on the ground. Think they all need to take some kind of communication course. After our pool had some issues after completion we still have yet to here back if they even finished or did the work we asked. So our issue we asked to be taken care of we didn't know, we still don't know. We signed up for the pool maintenance too and what a headache!!!! The miscommunication is still happening, who the heck is in charge over there?! We are in the market for a new pool maintenance services. read more

Puryear Pool Service Complaint 1. Puryear Pools was asked to check the operation of our pool as they had installed it for a previous owner. After five service calls the pool still did not operate correctly. 2. On the first call the tech adjusted the programing on a wall mounted unit; however, the system continued to operate erratically. 3. On the second visit I requested operating manuals for the pda, variable speed pump, and the other equipment that they installed. I was informed by the tech that no manuals existed. I subsequently spoke to the "service manager" who stated he would send me the manuals. No manuals have been received. The tech tried to unsuccessfully to start the pool heater. During the visit I was informed that a new control system with a hand held pda would be required at a cost of over $2,500 as after this visit the system still did not operate correctly. I ordered the pda. 4. After the new system was installed on the third visit the pool still malfunctioned as before. 5. The phone rep stated they would send out their best tech to resolve the issues. The same tech that previously could not correct the situation showed up and he still could not make it work. After this, the third service call, the system continued to operate erratically. 6. During the fourth service call the tech disconnected some wires and said someone else would have to come out to re-connect the wires as he did not want to damage the new control system. He said there would not be a charge as he could not make the repair. He said an electrician would be sent out. The heater worked without making any changes: just one example of erratic operation. 7. For the fifth visit the phone rep stated they would send a senior tech, but the same tech that installed the pda showed up with two other techs so they could be trained. The phone rep stated that they had repaired the pool heater, even after I noted that no work was done to the heater. The wires were reconnected and I was informed that the wiring was connected only to the pool lights and that the lights did not operate. The control system still did not operate correctly. 8. In excess of $3,000 has been spent and the system continues to operate erratically. 9. A quote for over $4,000 was sent to me to replace two pool lights, but no mention of the continuing erratic operation was noted. 10. Two faxes have been sent to the owner of the company, Mr. Jason Satterwhite, describing the unsatisfactory service, but he has failed to respond in any manner. 11. A phone call was also made to the owner of the company; however, no response has been received. 12. Another pool service company was contacted and the tech resolved the issue in less than 15 minutes. I believe that the original control system could have operated successfully based upon the corrective measures that the "knowledgeable " pool company made, saving a considerable amount of money. read more
