We signed a contract with Puryear Custom Pools on February 24, 2026. We had excellent weather so…read morethe pool design by Jimmy Jackson and construction overseen by Scott Askew went fairly quickly. We were filling with water by May 1st. We wanted to share our experience for aspiring homeowners who are thinking about making the leap to owning a pool. As most research suggests, pool ownership has both pros and cons and can certainly cost a lot of money on the front-end along with maintaining the pool, fixing broken equipment, addressing leaks, and everything else that comes with owning a summer paradise. We chose Puryear Custom Pools due to their reviews. Sure, there are some dissatisfied owners, but almost every pool builder we researched also had a select few that had bad experiences or just plain bad luck during the construction. Our experience was good... yes, we had a few hiccups along the way, but the Puryear team along with the subs they use were able to remedy all of our issues. When you build with Puryear, you will meet with a designer, get to choose your water features, tile, coping, stone work, and plaster color/type. This is the fun part of building a pool... having the family choose the final look. Our designer Jimmy nailed the design with his computer and the actual finished product closely resembled what he was able to draw with the computer program. I would classify Puryear on the high end of pool builders when we compared build prices and specs, but we were okay with getting a quality builder with a good reputation. We also spoke with a few previous Puryear owners who seemed happy with their investments. Previous owners were also able to calm our minds that the construction phases of the pool process will indeed encounter issues. This reaffirmed our belief that it was normal to encounter a few issues along the way. Puryear will send you a daily schedule email of each phase with the estimated date. Weather, staffing issues, or workload may impact the timelines, but our experience was that they mostly adhered to the dates. We went with a 15x30 modern rectangular design, detached spa, and tanning ledge. We also invested a little more money on the front end by going salt water after speaking to several friends who have pools. We did not want to mess with natural gas or electric for the heating, so we contracted with Joe Rider propane for installation of a 250 gallon tank (expect to burn about a gallon an hour for the spa when set to 104 degrees and about 3-4 gallons an hour when setting the pool to 80 degrees). Our pool depth was 4' on each end and only 5'6" in the middle so with less water, our pool started naturally warming to around 82 to 83 degrees in May with just the sunlight so we have not had to use the propane heater for the pool water. Puryear, like many pool builders, follows a prescribed build process (we are located in west Fort Worth area). We did excavation which took about a day, forms and steel rebar installation, initial plumbing and equipment install, gunite (concrete which took about 6 hours), electric installation (we were able to add some external outlets), tile and coping (took a few days), deck set (which allowed us to add extra concrete for a small fee), deck pour (took about 5-6 hours), clean and grade, mastic, detailing, and finally plaster (took most of the morning). Scott, our construction manager took good care of us and communicated via telephone (calls or text) about what was going on. We experienced a few concrete "pop outs" on the new decking, but they fixed them. We also encountered a few leaks after filling, but again they came out quickly to repair them. In the end, our family loves the finished pool. Shout out to Jacob who takes care of our weekly maintenance and did our "pool school" where he went over how to operate everything. We just referred a few of our friends to Puryear as our experience was good. Scott was a good man to deal with and very knowledgeable. Jimmy kept in touch to ensure we got what we wanted... even to the end of the build process.

If the initial stone masonry work on our retaining wall / scuppers were done properly when the pool was built, I don't think we would have had these leak issues. Hoping the worst is behind us and we can enjoy our beautiful pool.

Avoid this pool service - extremely unprofessional and rude…read more I had a terrible experience with this company. They missed a scheduled pool service this Wednesday and never contacted me. I have been at home the whole day on Wed and my car was in the yard as well which can be clearly seen from the backyard door. I called Friday morning around 8 am and left a message, but no one called back. When I called again later at 2:30 pm, someone finally picked up. I asked why no one showed up this week. The man on the phone told me "Your yard was locked, and we're not supposed to ring the bell. If the gate is locked, we don't provide service." I was shocked - this was never communicated in advance, and nothing about it is mentioned in the contract. I'm a new customer - how would I possibly know about this "unlocked gate" rule if no one ever explained it to me? I asked this question, and he shouted "I am telling you RIGHT NOW!" with a very disrespectful tone. He was practically yelling at me over the phone. As a customer, I've never been treated like this before in my entire life. When I asked about making up for the missed service, he refused and said they'd only come next Wednesday. I reminded him that I paid for four weekly services per month, and now I'm only getting three. He said they won't make it up because "last time we added a lot of chlorine, so this week we wouldn't have done anything anyway." This logic is unacceptable. I paid for consistent weekly service - not "maybe" service based on their judgment. I also raised a legitimate concern: keeping my gate unlocked all day is a security risk, especially when I don't even know what time they'll come. He mocked me, saying "We have 3,000 customers and everyone else leaves their gates open for us and none of them has a problem' He clearly blamed me for the missed service and dismissed my valid concerns about safety. When I questioned why they blamed me for the miscommunication instead of taking responsibility, the man hung up the phone on me. Completely unprofessional, no respect for customers, and very poor communication. Do yourself a favor and avoid this company. There are better, more respectful pool services out there.

Post installation and pool school, there is no remote turn on. This was discussed with the owner and he notes that it was not in the order form and we did not read the contract closely enough. Alright? But again, we worked with a sales person and we would not know how to look for that within the sales document. Now a year later, we cannot get in the hot tub unless someone sleeps at the lake house over night and turns it on at 9 am since we cannot turn it on remotely. So, beware of the salesman. Also, at the time of purchase it was 2024, why sell anything without Bluetooth? Also we had to have two pool schools because the first person who arrived did not how to even use our salt hot tub.
