When we had a water-related issue at our home, a representative named John came out and immediately created a sense of urgency, saying we needed to move quickly and that they could "maximize" the situation. He mentioned his background as a former insurance adjuster, and the overall approach felt more focused on escalation than properly assessing the situation.
At the time, I was out of town and my wife was the one dealing with this, which made the pressure even more concerning.
Before moving forward, I decided to get additional opinions. I ended up hiring a reputable remediation company that took a completely different and more professional approach--bringing in proper drying equipment (dehumidifiers, air movers, etc.) and focusing on drying everything out first before making any decisions about demolition.
From a documentation and insurance standpoint, this made a lot more sense. The proper process is to dry everything out first, monitor the situation, and then determine if there are any mold or structural issues that actually require further work. This ensures everything is accurately documented and prevents unnecessary or premature claims from being filed for issues that may not even exist.
At this point, everything is drying as expected and there has been no need for the kind of immediate tear-out that was being pushed initially.
What really didn't sit right with me was when I asked reasonable questions about the scope of work, the contract, and making sure everything was properly documented for insurance purposes. Instead of having a professional conversation, the owner (Chris) responded with a hostile and accusatory message--calling me a "pain in the ass," dismissing my concerns as "BS," and stating he had never seen anyone question a contract like I did in 25 years. Unfortunately I would include a screenshots of this communication, but due to Yelps policy, I'm not sure if they would appreciate the profanity in the screenshot and it could be removed even if I edit it out.
I was simply trying to protect my home, understand the process, and make sure things were being handled correctly. After I pushed back and addressed the contract directly, the tone shifted.
My advice: get multiple opinions, don't rush into major demo work, and read your contract carefully. Based on my experience, it's critical to work with professionals who prioritize proper remediation first and communicate with transparency and respect.
