The Mrs. started coming here thirty-something years ago, when her eyes were giving her problems in high school. Then a few years ago my own peepers started to act up (the joys of getting old) so I made my way here. And now 'the older twin' in our family has become a patient. The doctors (professional, personable, quick-witted) are great. They're open Saturdays, which is beyond helpful for us Monday-to-Friday types. They have all the latest gadgets and computer programs to show pretty much every single part of your eye, socket, skull, you name it. (And thanks to modern technology - those dilating drops that made your eyes blurry the rest of the day are a thing of the past.) Look... it's not cheap. (Especially since I don't have a vision plan through my employer.) My sole (penny ante) issue was that the entire office was drab, stuck in the past with some sad ratty old carpeting. But on our most recent visit? The whole place has been given a 'home makeover' and it's new, clean, shiny, warm and inviting. (As much as a doctor's office can be, of course.) Metered street parking. Take your business elsewhere. He's as shady as they come. Worst Dr ever!!! The entire staff sucks. Been going there for years only because of convenience. But time was just disgusted. Did eye exam with Dr Daud he said my script hadn't changed in 3 years. Ok I order glasses. Long story short glasses took 3 weeks to get wrong script. Was overcharged and Purnell tried ripping me off. I recorded conversation for proof when I picked up my glasses again still wrong script now 5 weeks later. I told him to give me back all my money $408 he said no so I took glasses left and called my insurance. They called and told him to return my money. He's shady af talks way too much and staff is clueless. Do not go there take your eyes elsewhere. read more

I made an appointment with Dr. Purnell as a result of a recommendation from a friend. Before writing this review, I checked the existing reviews to see if my experience was an isolated incident. Clearly, it's not. June 5, 2023 - first eye exam for new eyeglasses prescription. Office called 3 weeks later to inform that my glasses were ready. I tried on the eyeglasses at the office. The prescription was completely messed up. Dr. Purnell did a 2nd eye exam on the spot. During the exam he alluded to the fact that the lab might have messed up and/or maybe I messed up the exam because my eyes were tired. Really? In the decades of wearing eyeglasses and having eye exams, I never once had an issue with new eyeglasses. The 2nd eye exam was completed; I waited another 2.5-3 weeks before being notified that my eyeglasses were ready. I tried on the new eyeglasses in the office as I was already suspicious. The prescription was messed up again, though not quite as bad as the first time. Dr. wasn't in that day. Office personnel said they would call me. NO ONE FROM THE OFFICE EVER CALLED TO LET ME KNOW WHAT WAS GOING ON. I called 3 times. The first 2 times I got a run around. I was told someone would get in touch with me. On the 3rd call, the person I was speaking with put me on hold, said she would speak with the doctor. When she got back on the line, it seemed like she either got yelled at or was embarrassed as to what she was going to tell me. The message, "call back next week, we are waiting for insurance authorization." Why do I have to call back, again? Why are they waiting for insurance authorization? The eye exam and eyeglasses claims were already paid by my insurance. I STILL DON'T HAVE MY EYEGLASSES! I cannot recall a time in my life of ever being treated so badly as a patient in a medical office. My requests were completely ignored. There was no explanation given as to what was going on. There was a complete lack of professionalism, courtesy, and human decency by the doctor and how he runs the office. Sometimes things go wrong. Apparently when that happens at Dr. Purnell's office, you are dismissed. This could have had a completely different outcome had someone from the office reached out to explain what was going on. Why should the office need insurance authorization again? The issue is between the doctor's office and the lab used to make the glasses. I will be looking for another eye doctor. read more

I have been here a few times in the last few years. Eye exams were uneventful as they usually are. Questions I had about minor issues were not really addressed....until this week. This office has a relatively new doctor, Brian Lilien. WOW talk about a thorough exam. Not a 10-15 mins exam I've had in the past but a REAL thorough exam including a detailed answers to 2 important questions I've had for years with no real answers. He is pleasant and cheerful and has a easy going sometimes funny demeanor. Some of the things he found may have been a little alarming but he explained everything in his low-key way that I didn't feel anxious or worrisome about. His knowledge about eyes is way beyond any doctor that I have ever been to. The receptionist Colleen recommended him when my usual doctor was out for that day. Great choice! I just had my first real eye exam since I was a kid here, I am now 38 and was very apprehensive as I have a phobia of doctors . I could not be more pleased. The Doctor who examined my eyes was incredibly thorough and explained issues I have been having excellently. He made me feel comfortable and safe. He had good jokes too, which is also a plus! I was seen quickly and I walked away with answers and ordered some really cool glasses (they have a good selection) I'm stoked!! I highly recommend. read more

Looking for eye care that is phenomenal look no further! Dr Schorn Purnell is the greatest. He has taken care of my families eyes for the last four years. So happy to have found them. I have been going to Dr. Purnell's office since I got my first pair of glasses 38 years ago! Dr. Robert Purnell was great. Never had a complaint, and recommended him to everyone. Unfortunately, he's retired now, and his son has taken over. The change has not been for the better. Now there are several new doctors that appear to be just out of school, and the place is very busy. My wife and I felt very rushed after our last exam. The eye glass frame selection is very limited, and not quite current. Frame prices, for the most part, are at least $100 more expensive than online prices. No one was really available to assist in frame selection. If you did find a frame that you liked, you had to wait for a doctor to come out to measure you up. It's now a get em in and get em out environment. My wife ordered glasses a few weeks ago and was told it would take a few days to get them in. I just called and they claimed that they left a message on my cell number on March 6th. I know they never called me, and I even checked my voicemail list and no such message. I didn't get new glasses there because I was so frustrated. I made an appointment for my son last year, and when he showed up, he was told he didn't have an appointment. I called immediately and was told the same thing. He had to reschedule. I called the following day to complain and was told that someone else in the office took the appointment but never told anyone. No apology was given. A few years ago I tried contacts and was given a trial pair. The contacts kept falling out, so I didn't pursue them any further. I later went to another optometrist for glasses and was told my benefits have already been used for contacts, even though I never purchased any. I had to argue with the office without resolution, and later had to involve the insurance company to get my benefits reinstated. I know someone else who went a few months back and had a similar overall experience. He paid with his insurance without issue. His wife went the next day, with the same insurance, and they charged her the full amount as if she didn't have insurance. They claimed the insurance didn't cover everything when it did. He had to call the office and argue with them to straighten out the situation. Again, no apology. It seems as if the office is concerned more about volume now instead of quality service. They tried to scale up so quickly in a small office, and it's not working out. It pains me to leave such a negative review considering how long I've been a customer, as well as many relatives. The changes are night and day, and the personal attention is gone. The office staff is unfriendly. I no longer enjoy going there, and me and my extended family will be looking for an alternative. It's a real shame because Dr. Robert Purnell was awesome, and one of a kind. He's surely missed! read more

I'll go with the good first. This office took my insurance! That is the only positive comment I really have. I went to this optometrist back in June when I ran out of contact lenses. I wanted to get new lenses so I could go jogging and see things, and also wear sunglasses and see things. This was one of the closer offices so I chose them based on that one criterion. Big mistake on my part. The only parking available is street parking, and you have to feed the meter. I didn't consider this before I left for my appointment, and when I found a spot with a meter I realized I didn't have enough quarters for a full two hours. I also didn't expect to be in the office that long. I fed the meter as much as I could and was seen by Dr. Lilian. He was pretty thorough, so I'll give him that, but he kept trying to be funny and ended up ribbing me for not laughing at what I guess were jokes. Really I just wanted to get a prescription and get out because I was worried about getting a parking ticket. He had trial lenses for me, but the contact lens for my right eye wasn't correct. Dr. Lillian told me that the office would call me as soon as the new lenses came in. No one from the office called me. I had to call back after about two weeks to get my lenses, after being scolded by one of the receptionists that I didn't have a prescription because I hadn't told them how well the contacts were working for me. I have been getting contacts from various providers for probably 20 years. I've been to providers in Texas, New York, New Jersey, and Canada. This has NEVER happened to me before. Usually I just go to an optometrist, they give me my prescription, I order my contact lenses. Done. The contacts I picked up after making several angry calls were fine, which I relayed to Dr. Shorn's office, and I finally got to pick up my contact lens prescription on July 1. But the story doesn't end there. Dr. Lillian left out a key variable in my contact lens prescription that I needed to order my contacts from 1800contacts.com. They contacted Dr. Schorn's office multiple times, and even called them today after I made a phone call to ask what was going on with my order (meaning that for over two weeks Dr. Schorn's office blew off 1800contacts). I called Dr. Schorn's office again this afternoon to try and figure out what was going on and the receptionist blew me off because she was the only person at the desk and was dealing with multiple customers (fine, I get that, but I think this speaks to how this office is not being managed well). I finally found a box of trial lenses and gave that information to 1800contacts. Dr. Lillian just called me back to say he faxed the missing information from my prescription to 1800contacts two times previously, but I trust 1800contacts more... Short story, try to find another place to get your eyes checked. Or see a different doctor? I don't know. This place left me grumpy since day one. It shouldn't be this difficult to get prescription contact lenses. read more

I am writing this review based on my experience with Dr. Schorn. Apologies that this review is long, but I wanted to fully detail my experience. I was in for my regular check-up for the first time at this office. My first impression wasn't too great. He spent most of his time talking about how he is the Optometrist for the NY Giants and Jets and how they bought him a new computer system. Great. Wonderful. Fabulous. Who cares???? I'm here for MY eyes. While examining my eyes the doctor noted that the trouble that I was having with my vision was due to my prescription being too strong. He gave me a few pairs of new 1-month contacts to try (I was having difficulty being compliant with my 2week disposables) and told me to come back in about a week for my new prescription. During my visit he told me my insurance would cover $120 worth of contacts and he would fill that amount and write me a script for the rest of the year that I could take to the outlet of my choice. Great! Well, long story short the 1-months were not agreeing with my eyes and the doctor agreed to switch me back to my 2-weeks via phone. I would be able to pick them up at the office the following day. Upon arriving at the office the next day, I was told that the contacts came to a total of $128 and I had a balance of $8. $8 is not a big deal but why was this not disclosed to me at the time of my visit? I felt pretty embarrassed that I didn't have the cash on me to cover the cost. The receptionist was very nice and told me she would take the $5 I had on me and carry the rest as a balance but I felt that wasn't the principle. The fact was I wasn't expecting this extra charge and it really caught me off guard. So that was done and I was looking at my boxes and noticed that they were the exact same prescription as the ones I was wearing when I walked in for my visit. The receptionist stated that the doctor was off for the day, could not be reached and if I wanted to see the doctor that was in that day it would 'be a while.' As I was already upset and had to run for another appointment, I was looking forward to hearing from the doctor the following morning. 9am Nothing. 12pm Nothing. 2pm Nothing - so I gave a call. The receptionist who answered explained that she wasn't there yesterday so I had to re-explain the whole story again. She assured me she'd tell the doctor right away and I'd hear back soon.... 6pm NOTHING. I called again. This time another woman picked up and I had to tell the story AGAIN. Finally, the doctor got on the phone. He explained that my contact prescription had not changed, only my glasses. I explained that that was not what he had said during our visit and if that were true, why was I still having the same trouble seeing with my current prescription? He told me I was incorrect and offered to re-examine me and then to just give me a sample of the next prescription down after we went back and forth a few times - neither of which I was interested in by this point!! When I explained my discomfort about being caught off guard about the $8 charge, he became irritated and kept bringing up what he gets paid by the insurance. I never mentioned insurance once nor do I care what he gets paid by my insurance company. My point was if you tell me you're going to fill my contacts for the $120 insurance limit, I should get $120 or LESS worth unless you call me to let me know something has changed. He then said something to the effect of 'if $8 is too much for you... ' No! not my point. I don't care if it was $1 or $100, its OVER what we discussed a simple heads up would have been much appreciated! Its a shame we live in a world where we're forced to shop around for physicians due to who accepts our insurance and who doesn't when we switch jobs. I will be headed back to my former doctor - out of network! read more

I must say this is by far the worst experience I've ever had in my life with anyone in the medical field . My wife and I had set an appointment and saw dr.Lilien . Upon entering to meet my wife I went directly into the examination room as he had begun to exam my wife's eyes , I didn't even say a word when he told her she was an "idiot " regarding her use of contacts (falling asleep with them in ) then he turned to me and asked if I did the same as occasionally I have and proceeded the tell me "your an idiot too" , mind you this is the first time we've ever seen this guy , perhaps we used bad judgment and needed a refresher on how to use our contact lenses as any true professional would have handled it but he continued to tell us at least five more times to our faces that we were both idiots, then he started to tell us why his nose was crooked "someone punched me in the nose because I was straight forward " well I should have straightened it out for him , then came his explanation of his view on politics and clients who were being subsidized by the state for there visits, the lenses he gave us both were crap so I tried to order ones I used elsewhere with his prescription but he denied filling it, what a PITA ,as much as there is more to say they're lucky they even got this review , STAY AWAY FROM THESE PEOPLE read more

I've been coming here for over ten years and originally used to see Dr Robert, but now I see his son Dr Schorn. Dr Schorn is a very nice person and treats his patients well. The staff on the other hand are terrible. I have a problem every single time I try to re-order my contacts and these problems vary. Recently I ordered my contacts which I would later find out were on backorder. The receptionist told me that they would be in within two days. To play it safe I went to pick them up a week later but they weren't in. When I asked why they weren't in the receptionist told me they would follow up with the company and call me back in a few days. Another week passes and I don't get a call. I had to call them back and I finally spoke to someone who knew what they were doing. She told me that the contacts were on backorder and that I would get a call as soon as they came in. Finally another week passes and I call back. The receptionist tells me that they are in and I could pick them up. Where was the call back which I was promised? If I hadn't called myself I would never have known that my contacts were ready for pickup. After I brought this incident up to the doctor I was assured that it wouldn't happen again. Dr Schorn seemed very apologetic and worked with me to ensure that I would get my contacts when I needed them. He gave me multiple samples and told me to call when I liked one. After sampling contacts for a month I came up with a pair I really liked. I called the office and spoke to another incompetent receptionist. First she couldn't find my chart. Then when I ask her if the contacts I want are in stock, she has no clue. I even got an attitude for asking her to check as to avoid a problem. I finally got aggravated and asked her to get the doctor. She wouldn't do that but said that she'd tell him to call me back by the end of the day. I never got a call. The doctors truly are great people which is why I hate to write this review. The staff are rude and incompetent. If you're going here for glasses I'm sure you won't have a problem. If on the other hand you're a contacts wearer like myself, find yourself a new place to go. read more

My whole family of four all visited with Dr. Schorn Purnell during 2018 and each one of us had a very good experience. He is patient and very good at what he does. He'll gave me plenty of samples for contacts so I could select the best one. He treated my daughter for an eye ulcer which happened out of nowhere and thank God she did not lose any of her sight. I'm glad the insurance changed on my end to one he is considered in network. Very happy with him and the staff. read more
