Weakness has never been my strong suit. The fact that I need to use glasses on a daily basis is still upsetting to me. But you make do with what you're given. I purchased my first pair when I lived in SoCal. Thankfully, I was able to find a great optometrist fairly close to my new home in Bergen County. Dr. Purnell not only is the resident OD, but he's also the resident optician. The purpose of my visit today was to get a new pair of prescription sunglasses. I previously had two pairs that were "misplaced" so I needed to restock. The selection of sunglasses is sparse, which was disappointing. Luckily, I was able to find a pair that I was happy with. However, their selection of traditional glasses is good. I actually came across several pairs that I liked and will probably purchase a pair in a month or so. If you have VSP vision insurance, then this is the best place to go for all of your ocular needs. They accept new patients and the waiting room is large. They even have a little area for your little one in case you can't find a last minute sitter. Aside from the lack of sunglass inventory, parking is the only other deficiency of this office. They do not offer free parking in the rear of the building and all street parking is metered. If you're skilled enough to find an open spot, then it's only $.50/hr to park. I have been going to Dr. Purnell's office since I got my first pair of glasses 38 years ago! Dr. Robert Purnell was great. Never had a complaint, and recommended him to everyone. Unfortunately, he's retired now, and his son has taken over. The change has not been for the better. Now there are several new doctors that appear to be just out of school, and the place is very busy. My wife and I felt very rushed after our last exam. The eye glass frame selection is very limited, and not quite current. Frame prices, for the most part, are at least $100 more expensive than online prices. No one was really available to assist in frame selection. If you did find a frame that you liked, you had to wait for a doctor to come out to measure you up. It's now a get em in and get em out environment. My wife ordered glasses a few weeks ago and was told it would take a few days to get them in. I just called and they claimed that they left a message on my cell number on March 6th. I know they never called me, and I even checked my voicemail list and no such message. I didn't get new glasses there because I was so frustrated. I made an appointment for my son last year, and when he showed up, he was told he didn't have an appointment. I called immediately and was told the same thing. He had to reschedule. I called the following day to complain and was told that someone else in the office took the appointment but never told anyone. No apology was given. A few years ago I tried contacts and was given a trial pair. The contacts kept falling out, so I didn't pursue them any further. I later went to another optometrist for glasses and was told my benefits have already been used for contacts, even though I never purchased any. I had to argue with the office without resolution, and later had to involve the insurance company to get my benefits reinstated. I know someone else who went a few months back and had a similar overall experience. He paid with his insurance without issue. His wife went the next day, with the same insurance, and they charged her the full amount as if she didn't have insurance. They claimed the insurance didn't cover everything when it did. He had to call the office and argue with them to straighten out the situation. Again, no apology. It seems as if the office is concerned more about volume now instead of quality service. They tried to scale up so quickly in a small office, and it's not working out. It pains me to leave such a negative review considering how long I've been a customer, as well as many relatives. The changes are night and day, and the personal attention is gone. The office staff is unfriendly. I no longer enjoy going there, and me and my extended family will be looking for an alternative. It's a real shame because Dr. Robert Purnell was awesome, and one of a kind. He's surely missed! read more

Dr. Purnell and his staff of licensed doctors are incredibly kind, careful, and polite. But the one individual that works the front desk does not give a f*** about anything you need. If you're seeing the doctor, it's a great place to go. But, if you only need to purchase contacts, glasses, or schedule appointments, AVOID. She'll treat you like sh** and you'll regret ever stepping in that office. read more

I was yelled at by Dr. Purnell who said he handed me contacts at my visit and he knows "because i am the doctor". Subsequently charged me for those contacts. He was very rude, condescending, and inappropriate. In speaking to a number of people in Rutherford following my encounter I have heard bad things about him regarding billing problems, misdiagnosis, and fraudulent activity. Been seeing Dr. Purnell for several years now. Will never see any other doctor. Even after my family and I moved we still come all the way to Rutherford to see him. He's very patient with kids and adults and explains everything in detail. read more

I called my insurance carrier when I saw that I was not eligible for either glasses or contacts until 2015. (I hadn't ordered both in over 2yrs.) The cust svc rep told me that Dr. Purnell had charged me for contacts even though I SPECIFICALLY told him that I didn't want to be fitted for it, nor did I order it. I did this because last year, they also charged my insurance for contacts on top of the additional $30 I paid for the one 6-lense box of contacts (because I'd used one pair for the fitting and the box was opened?). The cust rep called them as I was on the phone and Dr Purnell's assistant reversed the insurance charge even though she insisted that I got fitted for them (it was in the doctor's notes). Suffice to say that I WILL NEVER GO BACK HERE EVER AGAIN! read more

They billed my insurance for services that I did not receive that was 3 times the amount compared to the services I had actually received. It was a headache dealing with the woman in charge of billing. She was rude. If you're going to practice fraudulent billing, don't be disrespectful to the patients and draw attention to it. My experience with Dr. Vitto, another OD at the office, was good though. Unfortunately, the headache caused by billing is not worth coming back here again. read more

I have been a patient of Drs. Purnell for 28 years. I've also been a resident of Rutherford for that time. I have never had anything but a pleasant and productive interaction with Dr. Robert or Dr. Schorn. Nor have I ever heard from anyone anything different. These gentlemen have been a caring and contributing part of the Rutherford community for a long time. I can only hope Dr. Schorn's kids grow up and be as good and caring as father and grandfather. read more

I've been coming here for over ten years and originally used to see Dr Robert, but now I see his son Dr Schorn. Dr Schorn is a very nice person and treats his patients well. The staff on the other hand are terrible. I have a problem every single time I try to re-order my contacts and these problems vary. Recently I ordered my contacts which I would later find out were on backorder. The receptionist told me that they would be in within two days. To play it safe I went to pick them up a week later but they weren't in. When I asked why they weren't in the receptionist told me they would follow up with the company and call me back in a few days. Another week passes and I don't get a call. I had to call them back and I finally spoke to someone who knew what they were doing. She told me that the contacts were on backorder and that I would get a call as soon as they came in. Finally another week passes and I call back. The receptionist tells me that they are in and I could pick them up. Where was the call back which I was promised? If I hadn't called myself I would never have known that my contacts were ready for pickup. After I brought this incident up to the doctor I was assured that it wouldn't happen again. Dr Schorn seemed very apologetic and worked with me to ensure that I would get my contacts when I needed them. He gave me multiple samples and told me to call when I liked one. After sampling contacts for a month I came up with a pair I really liked. I called the office and spoke to another incompetent receptionist. First she couldn't find my chart. Then when I ask her if the contacts I want are in stock, she has no clue. I even got an attitude for asking her to check as to avoid a problem. I finally got aggravated and asked her to get the doctor. She wouldn't do that but said that she'd tell him to call me back by the end of the day. I never got a call. The doctors truly are great people which is why I hate to write this review. The staff are rude and incompetent. If you're going here for glasses I'm sure you won't have a problem. If on the other hand you're a contacts wearer like myself, find yourself a new place to go. read more

Dr. Patel is amazing and I have been going to her for the past 3 years ! She is very thorough in her exams and is always willing to find the cheapest alternatives for any medicine I may need for my eyes. I highly recommend seeing her ! read more

I decided to get a eye exam at this place last month and was placed with a Dr Brian Lilien. What a waste of time. Totally misdiagnosed me even when I told him I see better with a negative prescription he swore I needed a positive for distance. Went back twice and he was annoyed. In the end I threw out his prescription and filled my old one from 1 year ago that a different doctor said I needed a negative prescription for distance. This pair works great. Thank God Costco worked with me and did not charge me twice to fill the second prescription. Never again. read more

I love Dr R Purnell and his son Dr S Purnell. They are the most wonderful eye doctors! I highly recommend them.

Solid exam and reasonable prices, just don't expect to get your glasses in a timely fashion after ordering them. If you're a working professional (which you might be if you are buying glasses, since they are usually expensive), don't expect to pick up your glasses on your lunch hour, since they are closed from 12:15 to 1:30PM every day (!), or after work, since they will be closed by the time you get home. read more

I have been going to Dr Purnell's for about six years. I've been examined by both Dr. Rob (dad) and Dr Schorn (son) . I've have no complaints about my sight with the my contacts or my glasses. Recently I came down with a very bad eye infection in both eyes, the infection affected my sight and sensitivity to light. The care they both have given me to treat the issue was phenomenal and I appreciated the attention to detail with regard to follow up care. On a side note both doctors are very nice, family friendly, and socially conscious. Dr Rob has been treating patients in extremely indigent villages in Africa for decades during long visits to the continent. They are not only phenomenal doctors but also great people. read more

do not waste your time with this place!!! god forbid you have issues and need answers because you will never get it. all you will get is an attuide and put on hold while you are talking. diane (the lady incharge of insurance) is the rudest person i have ever spoken to. she needs to take some classes on how to speak to customers. especailly customers that have been going there for years!!!! my stepfather also had issues with them before and hasnt been back for years. i shouldve done the same thing too. the only one thats nice is dr. robert purnell (the son) unprofessional!!!!!!! nasty!!! not helpful!!!! read more
