I've been to Dr. Kim's office at least three times in the past two years, but recently decided to…read moreswitch doctors - primarily due to location. I never had a complaint until today when I called to ask the receptionist to fax me a copy of my last prescription. I had called last week and asked for the same fax, but unfortunately misplaced it since then. I said this on the phone as apologetically as possible when the receptionist asked in a snarky tone if she had "just sent me the fax two days ago." I can understand my request being slightly annoying because she had sent it last week, but to be so vocally annoyed and rude at the request of doing your job is baffling. She then told me even more nastily that she "didn't have time to do this all the time" (I guess doing her job all the time is rough?) and that I "should keep better track of these things." Oh, are you my mother? Or am I and my insurance company PAYING you? After she got all that off her chest, she said "I'll send it to you within half an hour" and then HUNG UP. Really, lady? I then called back after receiving the fax to let Dr. Kim know of his staff's behavior, and when I relayed the information, he laughed. He was either laughing because her behavior was ridiculous or because he thought it was ridiculous that I called to complain. Glad I am never going back.

He says "Oh your 30, your eyes don't change much." Does a quick check and sends me on my way, no pressure check, doesn't look behind the eye, no dilation, no glaucoma check. Just checked my sight. I think I can say I have spent more time in the waiting room (which is always packed btw) then in the examination room. Also, depending on his mood, he could be quite dismissive to your questions. This is truly fast-food ophthalmology. His staff could be more polite as well. I asked for a copy of my prescriptions, and she wrote down the one for contacts and told her that I need one for glasses as well, I got "Really? Ugh... hang on a moment" because Dr. Kim had already brought in his next patient. So sorry to interrupt your texting session. Finally, and while this may not bother some people, I got totally skeeved, The machine you end up putting your chin and forehead against, he doesn't have the disposable paper sheets that you simply tear off after a patient uses it. Nor did I see him or any staff member tear open a towelette to clean it. He goes the tissue route, because I'm sure the practice is hurting, and those paper refills probably cost uber bucks, anyways, tissue aside, the forehead rim is extra greasy.

The doctor was booked all day til 5:30, something I witnessed, but they took my in between patients for an emergency. I was scared I had cut my cornea and was in extreme pain. I walked in and they were already expecting me- paperwork took a minute and they checked on me to make sure I was okay. I didn't have to wait long before the doctor saw me. He checked my eye very thoroughly and reassured me that my eye was fine, I had just gotten something in my eye that had irritated it intensely. He wanted to make sure I was okay, and asked me to stock around the plaza for 15-20 minutes and follow up before I left. The salesperson/secretary was extremely helpful and compassionate both on the phone and in person. She made me feel ask much better about my "emergency" lol The doctor was busy but had a great attitude and remembered my name (if I had to see a new patient every half an hour...I wouldn't remember anyone's name). He was very nice about checking my eye again when I felt a pain and was very thorough in examining and cleaning my eye of irritants. I'm so glad I decided to go, and they accepted my insurance so I only paid the specialist copay. Also I noticed they only booked a patient every half hour- not over booking is key to quality service. The doctor is usually in six days a week and they have late hours. There's also a huge free parking lot. I'd recommend them to anyone in the area.

Dr. David S. Chu. - Review - St. Mary's Eye and Surgery Center…read more I went to Dr. Chu for DMEK and Cataract surgery. Dr. Chu was recommended highly. He is assisted by a staff of surgical coordinators, who handles arrangements, forms, and medications prior to and after the surgery. I completed the exam regiment and had an appointment for the surgery. Everything I needed was ordered and arrived in a timely fashion. All the documentation I received were pertinent and accurate using the very latest techniques in DMEK and Cataract surgery. I had a pre Laser session which went well. Time was spent explaining techniques and procedures. The pre surgery exam was extremely complete and through, nothing was missed. All scheduling was timely and there was little or no waiting. The surgery went without a flaw and I hardly noticed the procedure. I am now in the recovery mode, having returned for an initial exam, I am pleased to say that all is good. I would give Dr. Chu my highest recommendation as well as his staff. I will add to this at a later date as I have received updated techniques not available in 2020 when I had that same procedures done on my other eye. While St. Mary's may not be a big as NY Eye and Ear it certainly does a better job.

The doctor saw me for no more than 5-10 minutes, then handed me a paper with recommended eye drops--which turned out to be inappropriate. I had specifically asked for a lubricating eye drop I could use daily, but she recommended something that should be used for no more than three days. She also scribbled down the name of another doctor for allergy testing, essentially brushing me off. They charged $660 for this rushed visit, and my insurance only covered part of it--leaving me with a nearly $400 bill. Never, ever going back. Avoid this place.

E.g. $670 for 'other ophthalmic services', which no one could explain when I followed up asking about it. One of the several phone calls I got from their billing office was incredibly rude and dismissive and confusing, including bringing up billing about a screening I had at a different Columbia Doctors department (completely unrelated to my eye). I felt like my privacy was violated, they were weirdly trying to shame me about my unrelated medical info, and instead of any apology for going back on their word (they had previously said I already paid in full), they were really rude and acting like I was the problem. In total, I'll have paid almost $500 for one simple screening visit to the eye doctor. At several points, they were threatening I needed to pay even more, and at other points, they confirmed I had already paid in full, only to come back demanding more. Overall, this was a really unsettling experience. If they lie to me about billing, what else are they lying about? It makes me not want to go to Columbia Doctors again, and fear getting medical treatment in general, because of what a stressful mess the billing is.
