Sampling of ice cream tubs
Eric I.

It's interesting to me how filtered water places have diversified to selling ice cream, souvenirs, ethnic desserts. I'm talking in general - Pure Water is focused on water and Thrifty Ice Cream. My daughter wanted to come here as she's a fan of Thrifty's ice cream, and I remember it from my childhood when scoops were dirt cheap (less than a dollar, but I don't remember how cheap - maybe 25c for one scoop?). They have a good selection of ice cream, though when we went, many of the tubs were near empty, which kind of made me not want to order those as it kind of felt I'd be getting literally the bottom of the barrel/tub. I wish they used the cylindrical scoops for old time's sake, but the single scoop portion was likely a bit bigger/more than the old scoop size. And it should be for $4/scoop! Pretty pricey. But it's good to have some a broad collection of flavors - you don't have to commit to a whole carton. Banana nut that I ordered was pretty good overall.

I was walking into Giorgio's restaurant this morning to pick up my national lasagna day lasagna when I turned to the right and spotted a sign that said Thrifty's Ice Cream. I was like Whaaaat?!? So I made a detour and walked over and noted that there was construction going on inside. Standing outside was the owner Jacob and inside sitting down was his mother, Alma. We got to taking...... he said that they are open even though they are doing some construction. He told me that they plan on serving milkshakes in the near future. I asked him how he managed to be selling Thrifty Ice Cream because Thrifty's is pretty much defunct now? He stated that he believes Monster energy drink bought them and that he was able to go through a lot of hoops to be able to franchise the Thrifty's Ice Cream brand from them. ANYWAYS he let me sample some of the flavors and I ended up getting my one scoop of childhood favorite "Rocky Road" and a scoop of Peacon Praline. Wifey also got 2 scoops. Total cost $16.64, getting to relive childhood memories $ Priceless! $ The flavors was just as I remembered them! Only the price has changed "I paid $.05 for one scoop $.10 for two and .15 for 3 in the late 60's to mid 70's can anyone else remember pay 5 cents for a scoop of ice cream!!? Boy how times have changed. Lol!!! AGAIN...ANYWAYS: if you're in the shopping center on Foxworthy, they are located between Zenato's family market and Giorgio's pizzeria right down the way from Mings Garden restaurant. They also sell filtered water.

It was so cool finding this throw back to my childhood. The prices were so cheap back in the day so we expected low prices - NOT so. We got 3 waffle cones with two scoops each. It was $30. The server was and gave samples. There is construction happening in 1/3 of the store so the ice cream case was backwards making it hard to read the flavors. They were when out of order and mislabeled. It's lacking of ambiance. It has an unfinished feel to it, even before the construction started.

Triples, just like my bypasses!

I'm one of those dudes who says, "I remember when a triple at Thrifty's was 35 cents". Which means, of course, I play pickleball and sleeping hurts. So, for the last 50 years I have been eating Thrifty ice cream, especially when I was angry, or hungry, or happy, or any of the seven dwarves, really. And you can imagine how many things I wanted to kick when Rite Aids closed down and you could only find Thrifty ice-cream in the freezer department. Lucky for me, my algorithm knows I eat ice cream for dinner, so I got a notice on Facebook that a rando water store is selling Thrifty's ice cream by the scoop. I made the thumbs up emoji and the heart emoji and the diabetes emoji. Now, I could have bought pints of each of these flavors for the same price, but there's just something nostalgic about getting someone else's wrist hair in my ice cream. So, yes, I went down there, and got my ice cream, I got my ice cream, you can not have none, you can not have none... Oh, wait, I guess you can. The bad news is, it's $3.50 a scoop. A triple is $10.50. That is a 2900% increase. Someone Elon Musk on this. For that much money, you can go to Salt and Straw and get some deluxe ice cream, but, then again, do you really want rosewater, Beecher's cheese, and balsamic on your ice cream like it's the dessert round in Chopped? Maybe not.

My son enjoying his cotton candy ice cream. He's been treasuring the box we got to go for the last week like it's gold.

My son really wanted to try the Thrifty Ice Cream of our youth and I randomly came across this place on yelp one day. He was so excited to try it and loved it so much and my black cherry scoop was just as good as I remembered it (if not better - since it didn't have the chunks of ice from the scoopers of my youth). The little grandma working there is the sweetest and my son asks to go back every day. Unfortunately we don't live super close by so we got a quart to go and he's been treasuring it like gold for the last week!

There are a ton of great options here, and a lot of the drinks have really interesting names with stories behind them, many inspired by his own customers. Tony actually took the time to tell us some of those stories, which made the whole experience feel a lot more personal and memorable. The ambiance is really chill too. Everything feels clean and well kept, with Buddhist statues throughout the space, good vibes, and a bunch of cool collectibles you can actually buy, including Labubus and other Pop Mart-style items. It gives the place a lot more personality than your typical coffee or tea shop. He's the type of owner who would take really good care of his customers and make sure people leave happy. You can tell he's genuinely dedicated to what he does, and the fact that Saltea is open late makes it even better. Definitely my number one coffee and tea spot around here. Great drinks, great atmosphere, and an owner who genuinely cares about the people who come in. Hermés

It was definitely noticeable in the soft serve and made everyone else around us notice it too. The soft serve was smooth and creamy, not icy like cafeteria quality soft serve. The durian flavor was custardy as if it was still in fruit form. It didn't taste like there was only durian essence mixed in, it tasted like there was actually durian blended into a smooth cream that is then frozen and swirled into this nice frozen delight. The ambiance of the shop was cool too. It had a giant mural like painting of a big soft serve in a cone for photo ops and the colors were painted light with blues and pastels for a calming vibe inside the shop. I must come back and try their waffles next time!

Definitely check it out if you want dessert in the area! Plus the place itself is so cute!
