Advice is top shelf and the prices are the same or lower than their competitors on equipment...even lower than Amazon for sumps, pumps, etc. There is also no pressure from the numerous staff, who are always available to me for my numerous questions. It's a different league, entirely. It's worth making a trip to Atlanta! In my local area there isn't much to choose from. (1 Petco, and 1 PetSmart/ that doesn't carry anything saltwater/marine) This is like comparing costume/plastic jewelry to rare diamonds ... This is where you want your corals/marine fish to come from. (In Georgia) When their health is your primary concern. All fish appear healthy. You don't see dead fish floating around/or, fish coated in ich, over crowded tanks. This place has premium grade coral/fish. Their workers are knowledgeable! They know coral care: softies, lps, sps..., placement, light requirements, flow, compatibility, water parameters... They can help with aquascaping ideas, color patterns, designs for reef tank, etc. It's just... unbelievable! I'm thrilled I found this place! I wanted to take the whole store home! I don't like writing reviews, however, I feel compelled to write one for Pure Reef. I have a been a customer since around 2012. The store staff have always been helpful and I can't ever remember a time that I felt I was talked down to or not taken seriously. My first trip to the store was a great experience! I knew nothing of the hobby other than the fish are beautiful and I want a tank at home. Having just recently entered the workplace, I didn't have huge budget to spend on the hobby, but help of the staff I was able put together a system that met my goals at the time. They offer delivery and set up which was great. They can also maintain your tank, if you so choose. I was hooked! Since then, i have gained a lot of experience, mainly through trail and error. I shared my wins and my challenges with the store staff. I can't remember a single time that I called over to the store to speak with the staff about a problem that they couldn't or wouldn't help me with. Jorge has a wealth of experience and is always willing to share it with you. The store is always well stocked and if they don't have it they will get it for you. I like that they are strictly marine and don't deal in the fresh water part of the hobby. Not many stores can be good at both together. You will have challenges in this hobby! Fish disease/parasites, equipment failure and other. This is not the fault of a person, just part of it. My first experience with ich took out most of my fish. Now I know, there are fish that are more prone to it.. blue tangs, among others. If you want Dory in your tank, you may have to deal with this. So, I've gone from a small cube tank at the beginning to a 400 gallon reef tank with the help of Jorge, Angela , Matt and all the staff at Pure Reef. Let me begin by saying I was recommended to visit Pure Reef when I was in the market for a new fish tank. Angela and George the owners were absolutely amazing in making our new aquarium an experience we will never forget. Angela who handles all of the dry sales walked us through everything we would need and placed the order for us on a busy Sunday afternoon. We settled on a 180 with a custom cabinet that they had built for us. We live on the South Side and made the journey to pick up our new tank just a few weeks after we ordered it. There was a little delay with cabinet, but this is to be expected when you order custom furniture. Just be patient with something of this nature. If you not patient than this is not the hobby for you. George personally plumbed the stand and the tank for us. We made sure everything was good to go and they loaded up the trailer for our journey home. Angela even made sure that we made it home in one piece which, goes to show how much they care about their customers. Don't believe the negative reviews. These people are an amazing organization. I recently restarted my tank after moving back to Georgia. The second or third fish I bought was a blue tang from Pure Reef. I saw white spots on another one in a different tank in the store and should have known better but I brought one that looked healthy home. Long story short it developed full blown Ich in about a week and despite treating it and the tank with several remedies eventually died but not before giving it to every other fish in the tank resulting in a total die-off. When I complained they just said that they were "sorry" but that they had many other happy customers. I won't be back... I've been told that the copper that they put in their water suppresses disease while the fish are there but can leave them susceptible once they are in copper free water. No other store in the area that I am aware of does this. It seems to me that this just passes on the problem to the customer and is a poor business practice. Again, I won't spend another dime there and I don't encourage anyone else to either. read more

My husband and I have researched and contemplated joining this hobby for years but we knew this store would be where we would start, and we did. Throughout all our "research stage" (as we like to call it) this store has always had the most helpful and honest opinions, regardless of which employee we spoke to here (and we've talked to them all). The distance for us to go to this store is just as far as Atlanta and we pass other stores and yet this is the store for us. If you're interested in doing the hobby right it should be the store for you too. The selection can not be beat, on fish as well as supplies, and the store itself is always impeccably clean, while the employees are invaluable. Plus, they won't belittle you or treat you differently if you have an odd question, to which we've discovered there can be a few in this hobby! When we first introduced a group of new fish to the tank they all schooled together and stared at the water pump for almost an hour, like deep in trance staring. We called to ask if we should turn it off till the obviously hypnotized (and less than brilliant, but we love them anyway) fish could get used to it. Rather than laugh at our silly question, (no doubt what I would have done) they were kind and helpful! (...if you're curious, the answer is leave it, the fish will fall out of infatuation, which they did). After looking up their phone number today I stumbled on the negative reviews and had to write a positive one...people are only human and some can't be on overly friendly or helpful all the time! We were blessed to have the owner, Angela (with a a little help from her husband George as well), start our tank off with us, but we couldn't have gone wrong with any of the employees in the shop! Everyone there is helpful, knowledgeable and open to listen. If for some reason someone there didn't spend as much time talking as we thought we needed we'd look around, realize this may be a busy time, and come back or talk to someone else there. This hobby is not for the impatient or overly sensitive and maybe this store is similar in that regard, but never in a bad way. Each negative review we just read was followed with a comment from us of "really?! That's all you've got, they didn't overcharge you by hundreds, sell you a dead fish or spit on you after you told them you killed something by accident?" You cannot expect to go into a store such as this and always hope for people to kiss your butt (to the reviewer who sat stunned in her car without a returned wave). What if they've been slammed all day or just have a headache? It's a free world and you can write a review however you'd like but one cannot feel free to drag down a stores review because employees aren't overly friendly, this just shouldn't be a thing. Also, keep in mind, employees could be watching you to see signs of you actually needing help (seriously other reviewer, you thought they were watching you to make sure you didn't steal anything...in a fish store? The fish are a little obvious and the tanks/skimmers or lights won't fit under a shirt with ease and if you need a few dollars worth of food I bet they feel you need it more than them if you're willing to steal it!). As to the reviewer who makes 6 figures...is that supposed to impress them to the point where they treat you differently? It's an expensive hobby, few people in that store make less than 6 figures, if it even mattered...which, it doesn't. I've never left a review negating others feelings or opinions but these just blew our minds. To give someone a negative review on such things is a clear indicator that you really don't have much to complain about in this world. Keep up the great work Pure Reef and thank you for the amazing service! I've been working with George, Angela and Matt for a few years now. They helped my family ease into our first saltwater tank, then our second. They were supportive, helped me work through problems with the tank. Each time we'd leave the store it felt like we were leaving a friend's place instead of a business. When my job moved me to Texas, they helped me think through keeping or selling my tank and encouraged me to keep it. That says a lot to me!! There was nothing in it for them, but they knew how much we loved our tank and wanted us to keep going. Best LFS in Atlanta hands down. No overcrowded sickly looking tanks to be found here, it's so clean you could probably eat off the floor. Only saltwater/reef unfortunately but for anyone interested in getting into the saltwater part of the hobby this is where it's at. Let me start by saying the staff at Pure Reef are very knowledgable, and their store is extremely clean. Having come from the local store in Athens, where the knowledge base is more dispersed across the staff (rather than all staff members knowing most stuff) and the store is set up in more of a messy garage style, I enjoyed my initial experience at Pure Reef. They were able to get me set up with my live rock and water, as well as a cleaning crew. That said, I have several issues with the store. What you should first know is that I have spent somewhere around $700+ in their store on various live rock, water, supplies, corals, invertebrates, and fish. I am well-invested in the hobby, as well as very interested in doing it properly. I will also note that I have been off and on in the hobby for about a decade now. I have also had a well-established 36-gallon freshwater tank (essentially no deaths) for over a year now. The saltwater tank I discuss here is a separate 36-gallon tank. Beginning with the positive, let's talk about what I have from their store that's living. I have 1 or 2 blue crabs (only ever see 1 at a time), several tiny hermit crabs, 1 Astraea snail (the other is from Athens), a serpent starfish, a tuxedo sea urchin, a cleaner shrimp, a brown gorgonian coral frag, a daisy polyp coral frag, a meteor shower (Cyphastrea) coral frag, a medium/large Wellsophyllia brain coral, a zooanthid coral frag, and, most recently, 2 False Percula Clownfish. Needless to say, I have confidence in Pure Reef's coral and invertebrate stock. Now let's talk about what has died. I had 2 incidents of snail death, which I eventually diagnosed on my own as a food resource issue; after my mentioning it, the staff agreed that I need not buy any more snails unless I develop an algae problem. Regarding my fish stock, I had already bought an Orchid Dottyback and a Blue-Spotted Jawfish at the Athens store (both of which are doing great). I went to Pure Reef looking for something that would bring more life/movement to the middle of my tank, and they suggested a Midas Blenny. Like all good fish hobbyists do, I went home and did research on the Midas Blenny and was satisfied enough to go back to Pure Reef the next day and fork over the $90 for one. (I'll take a pause and say that I'm not afraid to spend money on a nice fish, as my Blue-Spotted Jawfish was $105 in Athens.) I brought the Midas Blenny home and drip-acclimated it as instructed and then poured it all into my tank, as they had always had me do with the corals. What I learned the following week, when I got my 2 False Percula Clownfish, was that they had failed to tell me that they use copper-based medications in their fish water and not to add the Midas Blenny water to my tank. However, nothing seemed to have come of it, so I at least followed the newly given instructions with my 2 False Percula Clownfish. Now I will take a second to mention that, over the course of the single week that I owned the Midas Blenny, it was not overly active and sometimes appeared to breathe heavily while resting on its side on a flat rock; however, it was eating, so I dismissed its behavior as first week jitters. The day after I got my clownfish and added another piece of live rock, I found my Midas Blenny dead and being eaten by my clean-up crew. I called Pure Reef immediately, and Matt said I would be eligible for a replacement if my levels were relatively normal. Upon arriving at the store, Matt said I actually was not eligible for a replacement because it had been a week, not 24 hours, even though my levels were (while admittedly not perfect) nowhere near high enough to kill the Midas Blenny (which I also knew from my own research). This made sense, since everything else in my tank was doing perfectly dandy. As you might imagine, this irked me, given that the Midas Blenny was a $90 fish that they recommended I purchase from them. They eventually settled on giving me a test tube of treatment solution (to fight ammonia) and some bacterial solution for free, while I purchased more buckets and saltwater for a regular water change. Since then, I have seen Midas Blennies for sale online for anywhere between $25 and $70, but never $90; thus, I feel this fish was rather highly priced at Pure Reef. I have since been turned off of Pure Reef. For me, it is more reliable, more cost-efficient, and less risky (death-wise) to order from certain websites or drive to the Athens store for my livestock needs. I have also bought my own test kit and refractometer so I can do my own testing at home (instead of going to Pure Reef weekly). Now I only require RO water from an outside source. All in all, Pure Reef is impressive from the outside, but give me that garage-style, lower-priced, true LFS customer experience from Athens over the Pure Reef experience every time. It might mean more research for me to do, but my tank (and my wallet) will be happier and healthier. To each his own, I suppose; you decide. read more

In this area there is no better place for a reefer than Pure Reef. The store is clean and well organized, most of the staff are knowledgable and give good advice. They have a good selection of fish/corals/inverts too. Their prices are not the cheapest around but much like this hobby I find if you take the cheap route you'll likely end up spending more in the long run. Pretty amazing coral and fish store, The people in here def know what they are doing, almost an art and science to maintain a saltwater tank, and theirs are crystal clear and beautiful. The fish and eel and shrimp are all happy and healthy. This is the place to go if you have a salt water tank, it is expensive, but thats part of what comes with the territory of a salt tank. we ran across the street when we were getting the cars washed to kill some time and it was like we were walking through the finding Nemo movie. the colors of the fish were brilliant and bold. the coral was just incredible. They have the largest selection of shrimp I have ever seen. One of the gentleman took the time to explain which shrimp would be best suited for my tank at home without all my fishies going in their bellies. .For the numerous years they have been here, I dont know how i had never been in there before, but i haope to one day have a tank more suited for shopping in the store :) read more

I just moved to the Roswell/Alpharetta area in the past month. I had to give up my 65 gallon reef tank due to the move. I just have a Nano tank for now, but am planning on getting a much larger system(100+ gallon) in the next year or so. So, I have started to search the area for a good aquarium store where I could purchase everything I will need. This store is NOT it. The Good - They have a great selection of aquariums and equipment. They could use a better selection of LED lighting systems. I was able to get a better LED system for my Nano tank, just down the road from this store at Petco. Their tanks all look in good condition and most fish, corals, invertebrates, etc. look great. Good selection of frozen aquatic foods. The BAD - The staff are mostly young guys with a condescending attitude. I have successfully kept many types of marine fish and corals for over twenty years. But, when I asked these guys a question all I got was the attitude that I did not know what I was doing, or dumbed down answers. I was not taken seriously. What a shame for them as I make six figures a year and could have spent many thousands of dollars at their store. I used to live in the Marietta area 6 years ago. I live in the Metro Atlanta area and they delivered everything to me and brought all of it up my spiral staircase. I wish they sold freshwater fish and plants. Their prices were very reasonable. This is definitely the best saltwater aquarium store in the Atlanta area, I've been to all of them. Pure reef has a beautiful store, inspiring show tanks, impressive selection of livestock, and very knowledgeable, professional, friendly, and helpful staff. The staff is also plentiful, I have never had to wait for someone to help me they are right there when you walk in the door. One thing to note in particular, I have never felt oversold there. In some cases I've been asking should I get this or that and I have received a very honest answer of I would wait on that for now. In other words they are really looking out for the success of your tank and help you not rush things, as patience is key in reef keeping. I took a trip to pure reef today to get some information about starting a saltwater tank. Within seconds of walking in the door where my mind was blown by the 2 AMAZING tanks one of the employees (Avery) greeted me and started answering my questions and helping to finalize my research on starting a tank.
