My fiancé and I came in to purchase a set of clubs for him. He is still a beginner so he had done some research, and talked to a few people about what to look for. Upon arriving, we were promptly asked if we needed any help, to which we replied, "We're just browsing for now."
He took a phone call while inside, and during this time another employee came over to see if we needed help. At this point, we had wandered around and checked everything out, so we were ready for some professional help and appreciated being checked on. John was extremely friendly and immediately asked what we were looking for. My fiancé told him he was looking to purchase his first set of clubs, and his dad had suggested the Callaway men's Strata set; not too expensive for his skill level, but not terrible quality. John politely told my fiancé that he looked far too strong for such a flexible set of clubs; he then suggested looking for clubs with stiff shafts. He explained his reasoning thoroughly, and in a way my non-golf knowledgable self could understand.
He agreed that we probably didn't need to spend a ton of money on a set of clubs at this point. He took us around and showed us his suggestions for the best price for quality clubs they offered, and essentially built a set personalized for my fiancé. After he gave us his opinions, he allowed us to weigh the options and discuss it together. He was not pushy or overly eager to sell us anything. He just said to let him know if we needed anything else and walked away. He even told us there was another store down the street if we didn't find what we were looking for here, which in my opinion is excellent customer service. He truly cared about our experience and our happiness and didn't look at us as another sale.
We discussed his suggestions for a few minutes and then called him back over to help pull each club for my fiancé. There were no more of the drivers that he suggested, so he went off to double check if they had any in stock there or in their other store. He returned and said the company no longer produces them, and offered an alternative of the same quality (a little more expensive, but what can you do) and continued to pull out the clubs to build the set for my fiancé.
He gave my fiancé some great insight on how to choose a putter, and again, left us to that without being overbearing. When we picked everything out, we brought it up to pay. He was extremely careful to make sure all of the sale prices rang up correctly, and even double-checked everything at the end. He noticed my fiancé had picked up a USMC marker and asked who was in the military, to which we replied that it was previously my fiancé. He chatted with us about that, and eventually that led to talking about his dogs and our dogs-a very friendly conversation. He took the time to remove all of the stickers off each club, clean them and put them in the new bag. He even suggested not overusing his new driver at a range because it could wear it down quicker (due to the balls most ranges use), something my fiancé would have never known.
John really was very kind, friendly and knowledgeable, even offering his assistance to my fiancé if he had any questions as he began to play more- he said feel free to call him with any questions. It was refreshing to have a shopping experience where we didn't feel pressured to buy anything, or that employees were breathing down our necks the whole time. John made us feel very comfortable and relaxed, and he was even cracking jokes with us. If we have any golf needs we will absolutely be going back to Puetz and asking for John.
Thanks so much, John! You're great! read more
