Stopped by Publix while I was visiting Birmingham and had a very good experience. Parking was easy and convenient, which always helps when you are just trying to get in and grab a few things. Inside, everything looked good. They had nice salads, refresh drinks, and a lot of little instant meal options that were useful while traveling. I picked up some lighter items, a few snacks, and some chips, and they had exactly what I needed. The staff were very friendly and the whole visit went smoothly. Publix has become the leading name in the supermarket field here in the southeast. Once you experience a Publix supermarket yourself, I am confident that you will understand how Publix has become such an iconic supermarket brand and has developed such a loyal customer base down here in the southeast. Publix has created a solid reputation by offering incredible customer service, great BOGO (buy one, get one free) deals, and we cannot forget their subs, which are affectionately known as "Pub Subs." Coming from New Jersey, a state known for their great subs, in a way, it hurts me to state that a supermarket has some of the best subs in the area. But it is also a 100% true statement. Publix subs are very good. My go-to sub is probably their Italian sub, which is truly a tasty offering. I also enjoy their roast beef and cheese sub. I would definitely recommend upgrading it by using Boar's Head meat. It is definitely worth the small upcharge. This particular Publix is located in downtown Birmingham and though it is a bit tighter, they still have a lot to offer. It also has a pleasant enough atmosphere. It is great to see Publix expanding beyond the boundaries of their home state of Florida and spreading throughout the southeast. Not only am I happy about it, but I am confident that the communities where Publix opens a location are very grateful for a Publix opening by them. Nice grocery store. Friendly service, especially the lady stocking the premade Boar's Head sandwiches. Good sandwiches, too. Pretty expensive, at least compared to what I'm used to. The homeless congregating outside the front of the store and milling about within the store is a real problem though. I don't know what the solution is exactly but it's definitely a deterrent to families shopping at this particular Publix. read more

I was visiting from out of town and found myself in need of some groceries. I could not find the store's parking lot, but I am sure that there was one. I did find metered street parking, that was free after 5PM and it was nit too far of a walk. The store is organized and it may be just me, but the prices seemed a bit high than I am use to at other Publix stores. The store was also clean and they have a security guard posted on site. The staff was not memorable during my visit. They were not rude or mean and they were not super friendly and welcoming. They just did their job. This grocery store has a monopoly on people needing groceries downtown. Outside of here, there are not many options. I think a 3.5 star rating is more appropriate, but that is not an option and it is closer to a 4 than a 3 in my opinion, so that is what I went with. read more

I needed to grab a few items before heading home from work . It was extremely crowded but I was able to get what I needed fairly easily and quickly. I even picked up a few items that weren't on my list. Publix is known for their BOGO items but I do find that sometimes that's not always the better deal ; depending on the item , Publix can be a tad bit more expensive. This location has street parking as well as a covered parking deck. From the covered deck there is elevator access into the grocery store. My cashier, Jake was very friendly and polite! I really like this location because of the convenience factor. Birmingham really needed a quality , chain grocery store centrally located. This is a great addition to the downtown area! read more

I live downtown Birmingham, Alabama. To have a Publix within a five-minute drive or even walking distance is lovely. I called the butcher and asked for a Large Pork Butt with bone for smoking on my grill. The sale started on pork the next day. He said, come in at 10 am. My wife went in and the pork but was large but flat. She bought it anyway. When I got home, it was cut in half which made it not good for my needs. I was initially upset. I got back in my car and went back to Publix. Went to Customer Service. No questions asked, refund and out in less than two minutes. I would have given them a five-star but the meat was still wrong. I love this store but I had to take a star for this.. I ordered a cake yesterday and my husband picked it up today. When he brought it to me all I saw was a huge sticker on the top of the box. I tried to carefully pull it off but it left so much paper and glue behind. This may not be a big deal for some but for me it was. It looks messy. Very cool location downtown with parking deck and can easily take the elevator down to the supermarket. Very busy inside but with a lot of items to choose from. Deli area was packed with everyone getting sandwiches for lunch and I got fried shrimp and sweet potato waffle fries. Whenever I'm in town to visit I always stop by to get the good fried chicken they make or get a sandwich from the deli. A very cool spot. read more

I've always enjoyed shopping at Publix. The stores are clean and normally well stocked. Employees are polite and helpful. The prices at Publix have historically been a little more than say Walmart or Winn Dixie. But shopping there made up for a bit of a price difference. At least until after the pandemic was over. We have all suffered from outrageous inflation as of late, but Publix seemed to take full advantage of it. Went in to pick up a few items a couple weeks back. One of which was a 2 liter soft drink. I didn't pay attention to the price until I went to check out. The cashier actually made the comment of how ridiculous it was that a 2 liter soft drink costs four dollars. My jaw dropped. I started to tell her to knock it off my bill and keep it, but the store was crazy busy and I just left it alone. I actually called a local quick stop, where prices are always higher than grocers, and asked the store clerk how much their 2 liter drinks were. $2.25 was the response. Publix... I don't think I've ever been this excited to write a review! I visited this location on opening day.... 5 hours after it opened. The place was jammed pack! The deli line was wrapped around the store with lots of UAB employees and other folks waiting for a hot lunch. Heavily sprinkled throughout the store were staff (corporate and local) asking if I needed help finding things. After parking, employees greeted me in the parking deck, and from the moment the elevator doors opened. I ate my lunch from the samples that they had available. All checkout lines were open (and moving). Everyone had a smile on their face. I know that this was not "the real - day to day" experience I'll have since everything was on show, but I am super excited since this location is not only close to my place of employment but also close to where I live. Awesome finally having a grocery store downtown besides Western on Highland Ave. This location is convenient to Railroad Park but is smaller than a conventional Publix due to smaller lot. They accommodate by placing a parking deck above the Publix with street parking available as well. But if you're use to the normal Publix layout be prepared for shorter aisles that do not allow my usual walking path. However, great location and as usual you can order a sub or sandwich online and beat the crowds at lunch time/dinner time. They even offer to have your deli meat ready for pickup through an online order. I usually order deli meat on the way there and pick it up after picking up my grocery list. read more

We absolutely needed more grocery stores downtown, and this Publix definitely delivered. It's so close and convenient to both my home and my work. You also don't need to sacrifice convenience for price, as everything I got today was almost a steal. I did notice the aisles were a little more tight when you walk through, but I assume it's because of limited space. They didn't have to skimp on how many products they could offer, so I will accept that! They also have sushi, which no good Publix is complete without! I went in just to get a snack to get through my work shift, and ended up getting food for the week! Although there was ample street parking, I knew I had to park in the FREE parking deck "just cause". This yelp review wouldn't be complete without me telling you how great it was. First time in a Publix, stores pretty clean and they had a good selection of fresh deli foods. Cons: - Not a lot of parking in a congested downtown street, unless you pay for a parking garage, you gotta wait on the street for parking. Very inconvenient. - The pharmacy section is small and not much to choose from for generic brands. - About $1-$2 more for the same items at other grocery stores. - Price tags were wrong, they over charged us a few bucks, had to go price check. - When they FINISHED their price check, our cashier continued to ring 4 more customers up while we stood there looking stupid. We didn't cut in line, if you finished your price check, then you should take care of us, not continue to ring everyone else up and completely ignore us. Rude. read more

The brand new Publix Supermarket opened downtown today, and I am so freaking excited about it. Besides the fact that it's walking distance from the hospital where thousands of people work and thousands more come to appointments or visit patients, it provides a much needed service to those of us who choose to live downtown and don't like any of the current grocery store options. Let's face it, the Pig on Clairmont can't compare to a Publix, and I'm not driving on any part of 280 or Hwy 31 near rush hour to get to a nicer grocery store in Homewood or Mountain Brook. This new downtown Publix is perfect for those of us who like to live, stay, shop, and play downtown. I went in today (on opening day), so of course the store was filled with employees tripping over themselves in an effort to help me find things. The store itself is smaller than a traditional Publix, like the one in Vestavia for example, but it was by no means small. There were ample checkout lines and elevators that lead up to the parking garage offered for free to shoppers. They offer a pharmacy, bakery, deli counter, sushi station, and just about everything else you would expect to find in a publix. I did read that this particular publix is going to have more "grab and go" food items than normal in an effort to cater to the people grabbing lunch from the hospital. I know it is the first day, so everything is going to look its finest, but I was very much impressed. I definitely plan on going back and shopping here regularly. read more

I was in this store this particular day simply to grab money off my debit card for a Toga Party so I could Tip the wait staff at the event. It was between 5-6 and the checkout lines were all long. The previous visits in the store were impressive with everything stocked, fresh and a very nice staff. On this day I just wanted to buy mints and hurry back to my function. The young man behind me had someone he wanted to get to in a hurry as well. Management failed to plan for traffic patterns and I was particularly upset due to the crime factors in the city. The news have people killed for the most trivial and asinine reasons, so I was in fear of my life why waiting line. While I could surf FB to past time, the young guy behind me was on his phone yapping about shooting up the place using awful foul language. I turned to say something to him and saw he had a bullet wound healing in his neck. I promptly turned back forward and keep my mouth closed. I tried to get the attention of the BPD Officer working security but she was busy talking on her phone too. The vision of me being harmed in a Toga while standing in line to buy gum is funny now but I assure you I was extremely scared then. My safety concerns were all due because those in control didn't plan properly to have the express lanes opened on a Friday in peak hours and I had the misfortune to have a young impatient tough guy with tattoos covering his chest and arms that had recently been shot in his neck, buying sushi for his pregnant side piece, loudly cursing to one of his buddies on his new burner phone. (Nope, I wasn't about to say a word about her eating uncooked discounted grocery store fish or anything else about his phone conversation)! My low review is for Publix not seeing I spent 34 minutes in line for one item and opening an express lane, poor staff planing, relax rules for their security Officer, the anxiety I experienced because the dude behind me was obviously irate and should have been noticed by loss prevention, management on security cameras, the cop being paid to protect me and all the other nervous customers within ear range of the dude cursing on the burner phone. Why do I keep bringing up the cell was a burner? He had left his ankle monitor and real cell on his front porch on his dog!!! This guy may have been making his phone conversation up but I believed him. Publix disappointed me that day. 34 minutes in line for one item! read more

This is hands down the best Publix location I've ever been to. Besides the fact that it's conveniently located in downtown (thanks for that), it has a FREE parking garage, is very clean and has such a nice setup! This Midtown location has a parking deck on the back side with two levels of free parking for patrons so don't worry about finding a parking spot! They really put some thought into the layout of this location and I really appreciate it. You park, hop on the elevator and walk out onto the ground floor to shop for all of your goodies. The layout of the store has been setup to portray the wants/needs of the area which means that the things that you just want to go in and grab are towards the front and around the interior while the goods that most put more thought into are located in the center of the store. I've also never seen such a clean Publix and everything is always stocked and in order. Publix in general is one of my favorite places to shop. Besides the BOGO deals, most of their offerings are fairly priced. They also offer digital coupons which can be used by setting up an online account, savings the coupons and even making a grocery list. When you reach checkout, you simply put in the phone number registered to your account and your coupon automatically applies to your purchase. Another Publix tip is that if an item rings up incorrectly, you automatically get it for free. FREE! They also accept some competitor coupons and usually have a set of Publix specific coupons in their circular. read more

This is my local Publix. It's a good one. I love that they have a parking deck, you are sheltered from the rain and heat! A short ride down the elevator to the grocery store where you will find tons of smiling faces greeting you. This Publix has the essentials, nothing more nothing less. They do have a pretty good beer and wine selection for a smaller sized Publix. They are for the most part always fully stocked, and if they aren't just ask, most of the time they have it in the back. The produce is always fresh and great prices. The BOGO is always the way to go, I shop for what I need based on what's on sale. You can get some great deals! I live a block from this Publix and frequent it once or twice weekly. The employees are all very friendly and I haven't had any bad bouts of food here. But, although convenient, the biggest complaint I have here is the long lines. The lines have actually deterred me from going here a decent number of times. Even with 4-6 checkout lanes, lanes will back up to about 4-7 people long. I think the best solution to this issue would be to hire a couple more cashiers during the busy shift and actually installing another lane or two of registers in front of the elevators. Also, sometimes I'll run in to try and grab a quick chicken tender dinner or have a deli sandwich made, but at busier times, I've waited close to 25 minutes. Overall, love this Publix, I hope they'll cleanup some of the logistical issues in the future as the new buildings that are being built around it go up and more people frequent this location. read more

My first visit! Very good, I must say. We had seafood steamed by Shelah and he was so pleasant and helpful. We shopped some while our food was prepared and things were neat, easy to locate, and reasonable. When we returned, there was a wait and was assisting someone else. She was an older lady, with many questions, but Shelah remained really cordial and professional. He offered her great tips such as seasonings and where to locate stuff. There were employees on the aisles to ensure you found what you needed. Definitely will return! read more

Cons: - I've bought about 10 gallons of milk from here since they've opened, and 9 out of 10 times the milk goes bad several days before the expiration date. I know the problem is not my fridge because this does not happen when I buy milk anywhere else. - I once bought a pre-made clam chowder soup. Every other bite had sand in it. I super hate throwing food away since I'm a broke student, but it was beyond edible. - Super expensive. Like.. what. The only stuff you should buy from here is stuff that is on sale. I'm super excited to have a relatively large grocery store downtown. While the layout is different and the space seems smaller, this Publix has everything I would ordinarily buy at Publix (read: frozen pizza, skillet meals, Haagen Dazs ice cream, Peet's Coffee K-Cups, and Hebrew National hot dogs). The layout of the store makes sense after a little bit of practice. The store also contains the usual deli counter, freshly-made sushi rolls, and an area to eat your pre-assembled meal should you choose to get one. I only recently discovered from an article online the poorly-kept secret of the Publix Sub (read: THEY ARE AMAZING). So far, I have only tried the Boar's Head Roasted Turkey Sub, mainly because I am a creature of habit, and it's so amazing, I have no reason to try anything else yet, though I have my eye on the chicken tender sub. The deli counter has all the usual add-ons (many varieties of cheese, as well as spinach, tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles, peppers, black olives, etc. + mayo, mustard, honey mustard, etc.), and the subs are bigger and fresher than any of the other sub places in town, and they only run you around $8. I'm a big eater, and they fill me up. So try out the downtown Publix - for groceries, but mainly for the Pub Subs. :) read more

Came in over the weekend and was pleasantly surprised. This was a really nice store. Huge elevator for dealing with people with buggies/carts. The store is really clean, and fits A LOT into its space. Love the ability to service the downtown market. Deli section was huge - probably bigger than a normal Publix store - great for those who want to grab some lunch. Only downside of this place is the parking - have to be careful pulling in and out of the deck. Other than that, I think this place is a great addition to downtown. read more

Proximity is great...maybe 2mi from our house in Avondale. Publix is our go-to for everyday items when we don't have much time to shop...Whole Foods/Trader Joes otherwise. I agree with other reviewers that this store is more condensed vs. standalone locations, such as the Montclair spot we normally drive to. My fav service Publix offers is probably their sale announcements on the app...can save a lot if you watch this. Was able to street park, so no experience with the parking deck just yet read more
