Wine selection here is five stars. They have lots of the organic, smaller vineyard stuff you can find at the local wine shops, often for a few dollars cheaper. They have local beers, coffee, conecuh sausage, etc. The Pig does a fantastic job of stocking local stuff. My qualms begin at the produce department. This is a smaller grocery store, so there is naturally less selection. I wanted a head of butter lettuce, and all of what the had expired five days ago, no mark downs. The wall with all the greens was also poor labeled and a bit wilted. Ice cream in the frozen section was a bit frosted over. The staff here is nice, and they often have a sommelier on site! This is a great neighborhood grocery store, but if you're cooking a whole meal, you might have to make two stops. read more

I specifically wanted to visit this store because Piggly Wiggly is iconic. We don't have many of them in Atlanta and if we do they are not good stores. I visited this location as a last stop before leaving the city of Birmingham. I wanted to see if they had some smoked meat and sausages. Yep whenever I visit the deep south that is what I need. I was in luck as I was able to find some nice smoked meat, seasonings and country sausage. They also had a station in the wine section that refills bottles of beer and other beverages. I was impressed by the hot bar. This store is known to have some good hot foods. They even had Watergate Salad. That is a staple in the South. The employees were beyond helpful and courteous. Everybody speaks to you throughout the store. I would gladly return in the future. read more

This in my opinion is the best P W in B'ham. The selection of items are amazing. There is no upcharge like in other P W in this area.,clerks and floor assistants are eager to help. The very best things about the Pig? 1) Great selection of local, small-batch, and hand-crafted baked goods, sauces, and snacks. This is possibly one of the best places for high quality beef. This store is small, but you can get what you need. I shop here on occasion, usually if I'm in the neighborhood, or passing by and happen to remember something I needed. The prices are comparative to Winn Dixie and Publix, so no extra savings here like you find in Piggly Wiggly's in other neighborhoods. The location of this store makes a difference. No worries, because you get what you pay for here. The produce is fresh, wait time is short, they offer a large selection of locally made products and the store is usually well organized and clean. There are weekly wine tastings too, and a "Taste of the Pig" event where locally made products are sampled and the makers are present to answer any questions about their goods. I like this location and will continue to shop here when the need arises. read more

I love the Piggly Wiggly chain and this location is one of the best in the area! They always have a clean, organized store and a wonderful selection of local products in addition to the national brands. The crowning jewel of this store is their beer selection. The local/regional selection is seemingly endless and I oftentimes get suggestions from the employees (who are always very friendly). I come to "the pig" a lot as my closest most confident grocery store. This location is pretty good they have the usual fruit and veg, meats and a little butcher counter. Frozen food section, very good range of beer and wine, ready made meals and local soups. They also have a lot of day to day stuff other than your typical grocery store which adds to its confident factor. I also like that they support local business where they can. They seem to have a mix of local products such as spoon and ladle soups, midnight salsa company etc. I don't think the quality of their fruit and veg is the greatest but it's alright just don't expect everyone to be as fresh as it could be. They also don't have very many specials. I always have liked going to grocery store and seeing the specials and shopping accordingly. Service is usually pretty good as well, staff are friendly. As a lifelong customer of Piggly Wiggly, I was extraordinarily disappointed on my trip there tonight to see employees not wearing masks. It's selfish, self-destructive, and within the city of Birmingham, illegal. So why does management allow this behavior? I don't know where this guy's been, who he 's seen, what precautions he has or most likely has not, been taking, and I'm supposed to be ok with him breathing all over my food? When I saw that, I very nearly just left without my items, and really wish I had. I don't see how I'm going to be able to actually consume or otherwise use them around my house. Living in Highland Park means there are limited locations to get groceries unless you want to drive out to the burbs. (that's changing soon). But in the meantime, the Pig does it's job of having a decent selection of items that I need for my fridge and pantry. Sure - there may only be one brand of a particular item, but they at least have variety! Cashiers and staff are always friendly and helpful when I'm looking for something specific (the marshmallows are NOT where you'd think they'd be...lol). It was my 1st experience in this Pig. Aisles are kind of small and crowded especially around the produce section. Place looks old and dingy but serves its purpose I suppose. What really took me back was the amount of wine, craft beer and other drinks on hand! I felt like I was in heaven wondering around checking out all the crafts there. Best part of all, their prices on crafts beat anyone around! Highly, highly impressed!!!! The deli was packed so I bypassed it on this journey but found my way over to their sweets. Let me just say, if they have their 6pack of glazed donuts there for a $1.85, get them, protect them securely against your body and make your way to the check out. They are amazing! Just can't quite bestow 4 stars but it garners points for the handy location. If I'm unable to get to my favorite food purveyor Publix, the Pig will do all right. It just feels smallish and old and not as bright, big, and cheery as Publix. And the produce section doesn't exactly blow me away. The employees are all pretty nice though. In case you were wondering about the craft beer selection, it doesn't seem too bad, but the PW in Homewood can't be beat. Apparently this location has free wine tastings though! read more

Oh Piggly Wiggly, where do I start? The chain is a staple of southern grocery and consumer lifestyle, and this particular location is no exception. Walking through the doors under the partially lit neon signs is like walking 25 years into the past, reflected in both the cheap prices and antiquated decor. Daily deals in the dairy section, meats and non-perishables are certainly great reasons to come here, as is the always friendly Wiggly staff. The prepared foods portion of the store is unfortunately underwhelming, filled with cold egg salad sandwiches and microwaveable fried chicken bites. I know it's no Whole Foods, but don't come here expecting to walk out with a ready meal in-hand. The produce and deli meat sections and ambiance could also use a significant upgrade, so I complement my visits to the Pig as needed to Publix or other grocers. It's a great experience for the friendly staff and some discount foods, but doesn't quite meet the needs for one-stop shopping. read more

I can always count on the Pig to have something I need! For example, I was making Chex Mix and Publix and Winn Dixie were out of Wheat Chex. I called this location and the manager answered, went to go check the shelf himself. He then said that they didn't have it on the shelf because it had to be reordered but it had just come in. He went to the back and got a box out of the crate and had it waiting for me to pick it up at the store! If that's not great customer service I don't know what it!
