I am a huge fan of Publix and they pretty much are my go-to supermarket. This particular location, which is in Gardendale, Alabama, offers a lot to their community. There is a reason that Publix has become the leading supermarket in the southeastern United States. For starters, Publix has put a strong emphasis on customer service. They also have strong BOGO (buy one, get one free) deals and we can never forget their subs, which people affectionately call "Pub Subs." Thr subs at Publix are pretty solid. My go-to sub at Publix is probably their Italian sub. My daughter is a fan of their chicken tender sub. Publix also has a good ambiance for a supermarket that only enhances my overall shopping experience. Well, the staff are nice, the store is always clean, but it is SMALL! The aisles are extremely narrow. Two buggies can't go side by side, so be ready to feel claustrophobic. That being the case, the variety is limited, and they run out of stuff all the time. read more

I was never a huge Publix shopper, but I might have to start! I always feel like their items will be a tad more expensive than Wal-Mart so oftentimes I don't even bother walking in. I had to spare the other day so I decided to walk in. I actually saw pretty great deals left and right! I was surprised, and I knew I had to take advantage. What can I say...I love Publix. Always clean, always plenty of employees helping get the job done and they are almost always courteous and helpful. While I miss shopping in the Publix in Calera as it was not as busy as the one I now shop at in Gardendale, the Gardendale store is still very nice. Just lot's more customers that seem to be running in a faster pace. I try to do my shopping here on a weekday to avert the crowds, but it is what it is. Perhaps another Publix could be built for Fultondale to help with the crowding....Hint, hint...Publix! read more

I feel like a picked on minority here. Things like the worker commenting to me and the people behind because I wanted my 8 half gallons of $5+ milk so $50 worth of milk double bagged. Then today the lady made me unload my own basket because she didn't want to. Then proceeded to gang up on me with the older lady behind me making me feel unsafe as a young white small female even walking to my car. Before moving to the area I have been to many Publix's all over and this is my first ever complaint. Until now I had never had a Publix employee -ignore a hello -customer service desk does not speak -argued with me (several different employees) for wanting milk or heavy groceries double bagged -had service refused until I unloaded my own basket -been called out, embarrassed or disrespected in a busy setting -gotten eye rolls for asking for meat in the deli This store does not hold up publix customer service standards I've given it several months to "see how it goes" and it keeps getting worse. I don't want to dread going to my favorite store and I definitely don't want to give a store several hundred dollars a week to be treated rudely. I'm a quiet get it done person and I'm not use to being treated poorly, called out or having to involve management and I'm utterly shocked it has come to that with this Publix location. read more

Last Tuesday August 30, my husband went to Publix to get some groceries for me. I like to get in on the BOGO sales and the kind of popcorn I like was on sale. He brought the groceries in and I was putting them away and noticed he bought the wrong box of popcorn- fast forward to Tuesday of this week- I returned the popcorn and wanted to exchange it for the correct box. The BOGO sale was over, but Daniel L let me exchange the box for the correct kind and gave me the BOGO price!!! Mind you, I didn't even ask-he offered it!!! Usually I would have a pleasurable shopping experience at Publix (and I still will) but today just wasn't one of those days. Ms.Linda in the deli wasn't too friendly. My sandwiches are always made just right but today it was just sub par. She acted as if I was bothering her. It took longer than usual for her to finish making my sandwich because she kept stopping to have a conversation with another worker. Ms. Linda and the other worker was chatting about the job. Apparently they were expecting a visitor in the store. Ms. Linda didn't seem to happy about that and stated that she didn't want to be asked anything and that she would act like she didn't know anything. Publix is so smart! They put the pizza by the beer! Shopping here really is a pleasure, even if it's not always easy on the pocketbook. The variety in the produce section alone makes it my go-to grocery store. The meats are always top notch, and the wine selection could be the best around. When someone mentions they can't find a particular grocery item, I ask them if they've checked at Publix. Usually they haven't looked there, but they'll let me know after their next visit that Publix did indeed have it. I can pick up Boar's Head from the deli at the Piggly Wiggly closer to my house, but I invariably get Rotisserie chicken (Mojo flavor!) from Publix. The customer service is the best of any supermarket I have ever shopped at. This is constant across any of the locations. It is remarkable. I will probably be loyal to Publix forever. read more

Another great Publix experience! I love Publix for their Sushi, fresh fruits & vegetables, salads, cakes, Boar's Head meats, & most of all sub sandwiches. While traveling through Birmingham their was a fairly new Publix off the interstate. I walked in and was greeted by three staff members before I made it to the deli counter. The young lady by the name of Jakerria was so nice and friendly. She fished through the bread to find two of the softest six inches and loaded with the freshest vegetables. She took her time and made sure my sandwiches were perfect & they were. I will definitely return on my next trip to the south. read more

In the busyness of the week I didn't realize the lady who took my order wrote down a day 2 weeks in the future. Not only did Publix fix it, they discounted the cake $20!! They also have great buy one get one free sales that I enjoy. They make shopping enjoyable instead of having to fight the aisles like their neighbor down the hill. It is always a pleasure to shop at this Publix. The employees at this location make you feel like they are your relative. They will consistently ask where the rest of your family is or how are they doing if they are not with you. The baggers are always courteous and willing to take your groceries to the car (which is customary I know). I picked up a family 8-Piece meal with two sides and they have changed recipe to the mashed potatoes it now has a mild kick to it. The store is very clean and the produce section has selections that have a good shelf life unlike other places. The lady (Tonya I believe) was very helpful in the flower and gift section. She help me and my boys find a great indoor plant (Daisy) for my wife. She was very knowledgeable about her plants and how to take care of them. I recently had my wedding cake made here, and was VERY displeased. The whole cake was lopsided , and the icing was almost as if it were dirty Iced and thrown in.l The freezer. After calling and complaining I explained 5 times what the problems was, and was told I could have a refund if I showed them pictures of the cake. Although it was a nice gesture, there is no excuse for the presentation of it. I asked for no decorations, flower etc. I simply asked for a plain Jane white cake. I had confidence is the "professionals" at Publix, but they did a horrible job and let me down (not to mention on my wedding day). So when she got the meat cut I asked for another type of meat also and all she kept saying was eww over and over while shaking her head. I go to Publix for three things: Boar's Head sandwich meats, produce, and great customer service. It was here that I first discovered and purchased the new Kiko apples, advertised as "possibly the sweetest apple you'll ever eat." Quite possibly that's the truth. This Publix has the same top-quality deli and produce for which the chain is known. The deli and bakery staff are top-notch at Gardendale. Always helpful, offering samples, finding just the right products for customers. My expectations of Gardendale's new Publix were formed at the Chalkville store, where I drove for ten years, waiting for a closer option. There the staff bends over backward to help you find what you need. "I'll take you to it," is frequently heard. Perhaps the biggest treat is the checkout experience. "I'm open," they say. "Are you ready ma'am? You can be served in my lane." "Can I help you with that order?" This is the standard on which Publix made its reputation. The floor staff and cashiers at Gardendale are not quite there yet. Out of four visits to this new store, I've been approached perhaps twice when I'm looking for an item on the main floor. To their credit, if I hunt someone down and ask, they are helpful. Perhaps Chalkville has me spoiled. Or perhaps Gardendale is just new and still learning. Last night was a bit tricky in the checkout lane. The lines were long in the regular checkouts, and the new express lanes weren't checking many people. Now, it's a bit overwhelming to try to assess the lanes in a new grocery store during a busy time of day, and then have to actually count the items in your cart for an express lane. So I just made a quick estimate and stepped in the express lane. After all, there was only one other customer, and he was almost finished. And this was Publix. To my surprise, the cashier waved me away and angrily stated, "I can't take you!" I got out of line and went to a closed lane where I could count my items. I had four too many. Four. Um, really? Since I was on a tight schedule, I just left the excess items at the closed lane, and got back in the express. I only kept nine of the original fourteen. Didn't want to be yelled at again, so I figured I couldn't go wrong having only nine instead of ten. I must say, that was not my usual Publix customer service experience. I will go back, because I waited a long time to have a Publix store this close. But I hope the Chalkville manager comes over to help these folks learn how to live up to the reputation Publix has for amazing customer service on the main floor and in the checkouts. I'm 47 years old, and that's the first time in my life a cashier has refused to check me out. My review? Great quality food. Great staff in the deli and bakery departments. Will dock them one star until the customer service improves throughout the rest of the store. read more

I usually love shopping at Publix, and have never experienced anything but great service at other stores. The cashiers here are somewhat friendly, but nowhere near as much so as they are at other locations. I have run across people stocking the aisles, none of which bother to say hi or smile like they usually do at my usual store in Crestwood. This has to be one of the worst Publix I have been to. The employees and managers stand in the middle of the isles chit chatting and do not offer to help you or move out of the way. Also I agree with the other reviewer who said you nearly have to fight to get to take your groceries out without the bagger helping. Went in on Sunday at 5:00 to get fried chicken, which we love from Publix, and they had leftovers, no boxes,wanted us to wait 20 minutes cause they have not cooked any yet. Got 2 breasts, dried out a little, and chicken fingers, and she dug under top ones and got bottom ones. They were inedible cause so dry. Rude person working at that time. I like the quality of the food, cleanliness, and sales. I have the same problem when leaving the checkout, where employees rub up against me, take ahold of my grocery cart, and insist on taking my groceries to my car...I let them know I can handle it myself, I say no thank you...But when they repeatedly insist & invade my personal space, I feel like I have to be unpleasant at that point. I finally emailed the company yesterday & am looking forward to their response. Once a customer says, NO, they should not be permitted to grab my cart/groceries; that is just crazy. Do they not want their carts outside? I am thinking that is the only reason for this MADNESS. One girl insisted b/c she says she wants to go outside. Another man insisted b/c he had heart surgery and needed his exercise. I mean, Really, what is going on here? I am sick and tired of it, and if it happens on my next visit, there will be a confrontation, I will interrogate the one who is rude and insistent, who invades my personal space. read more
