    Wine cellar

I absolutely love this location! I mean they have a lot of the local items available. On my recent visit , I even saw some frozen meals from Roots & Revelry! I didn't even know this was a thing. This location is always busy but in a good way. They have a excellent wine selection! It's almost overwhelming bc there's so much to choose from. You have been warned! Lol Quality meats & produce too. The deli has some good food as well. I've had some hot meals from here & loved them. I love the staff here! They are friendly and seem to really enjoy serving the public.

This is more than just a grocery store. Their breakfast is southern fast food at its best. You get your choice of cheese or regular grits, eggs, bacon and a biscuit (there's other breakfast options if that's your fancy) all for $3.84 tax included. They include a fork & knife so need to worry as your running late to work. I question myself, why I've been wasting my money elsewhere for breakfast. The store has been around forever, situated in a nice section of Homewood. The employees are always very nice and cheerful, making your shopping experience feel appreciated. If you miss breakfast... they serve lunch as well. You even have the convenience of the grocery store for whatever your needs may be. Enjoy. You won't regret it!!

This is just one wall, there are many more!

I usually do not review grocery stores, because well they are grocery stores, but I did want to give some love to Piggly Wiggly in Homewood. If you are a craft beer drinker, they have the BEST craft beer selection of any grocery store in town. I'm definitely not exaggerating! They have beers from all over the world as well as local breweries. Price wise they are the same as everyone else, but selection wise they are amazing. It's fun too stop in an look around at the crazy names and flavors.

    Friday wine tasting options!

I've been here a few times; mainly just for a quick stop for ice or last-minute forgotten items for a party or something. But I've never used this location as my go-to shopping spot only because it's not convenient for me. It's a fairly small grocery store, but it is a neighborhood store and works for that location. Overall, prices seem a tad high for regular grocery items. But I stopped here after work for two reasons: they carry Orpheus Brewing's Atalanta tart plum saison and the wine tasting. I had heard they are one of only a few that carry this beer so I looked them up and saw the info about the wine tasting. I remember years ago reading about the wine tasting but never thought about going. I knew this location was known for their wine selection, but I'd never taken the time to check it out. Wow! I was really impressed with the selection, the prices and the knowledge of the wine manager. Really nice and helpful. So the wine tasting featured five (or six?) different wines and you heard a little bit about all of them. I can appreciate how they allow you to take your glass around the store while you shop so you can really taste it without feeling rushed. At least I think they allow it because I saw a couple of folks coming back with full carts and empty glasses! Anyway, I highly recommend stopping by this location for great prices on wine. A lot of specials and great sales on a variety of wines. You will be pleasantly surprised.

This rating is based entirely on the Pig's selection and support of craft beer. They have a FREE craft beer tasting every Thursday, 5-7 pm. Free. Craft Beer. Enough said.

They have some of the best prepared foods you'll find at a grocery store in Birmingham. The daily deals are also fantastic. I especially love the $5-per-pound wings on Fridays and the $5 pizzas on Tuesdays--honestly, I love all of the $5 deals! They really come in handy when I'm trying to stick to a budget. The bakery is also amazing, especially the 3-for-$12 dessert deal. The staff is always kind, friendly, and ready to help. The store has always been clean every time I've visited, and it has a pleasant atmosphere that makes shopping enjoyable. Even though the store isn't very big, it's easy to spend much more time there than you planned because there are so many unique items that you don't find at other grocery stores.

They just have great stuff and some of the best quality meat in town. I'd recently heard about the $5 Thursday bistro meal deal, and was reminded to check it out. I'll be back on a Thursday! Today, I took home some sushi for lunch. Prices are the exact same as sushi from The Pig or Publix, but the sushi is so much better looking and tasting. The salmon and avocado roll was fantastic. The dairy section is small, but I should probably eat less dairy anyway. I enjoy walking around and seeing all the fun packaging (I tell myself I'm not falling for marketing gimmicks, just appreciating good design). The had some chicken breast and coffee creamer on BOGO free deals that I scooped up. The people at the check-out lines are always so nice. I believe there's a discount for UAB employees, too.

This one happens to be located in a shopping complex that includes a Sam's Club as well. Now, right out of the gate, as other reviews have mentioned, parking and traffic are kind of a nightmare. Really only one way in, that I could see, and there is a lot of traffic funneled through a small area. I can only imagine how bad this must get at going home from work time and weekends. The store itself isn't too bad. It has the typical Walmart selection that you'll find anywhere else. Clearance isles are kind of a mess, but that is typical really at most Walmarts. I guess the main down grade for rating, in addition to traffic/parking, is that it just doesn't have an overly clean feel about it, kind of musty. I didn't have any interactions with employees because I ended up not purchasing anything, but while I was in the store, there was no attempt made by them to greet, see if I needed anything, so I can't really comment on employee interactions. I'm not typically in this area, so not a lot of reason to go to this location. If I was over here and needed something I'd probably opt for Target a couple miles away.

What sets it apart isn't just one standout feature--it's the rare combination of variety, quality, and fair pricing all in one place. Start with the produce section. The vegetable selection is genuinely impressive, with enough variety to build vibrant, fiber-rich salads that never feel repetitive. Whether I'm in the mood for something earthy and hearty or light and crisp, there's always a fresh option ready to go. It's the kind of produce aisle that makes eating well feel effortless rather than like a chore. Then there's the meat counter, which might be my favorite part of the store. Hometown doesn't just stock the basics--they carry cuts that most grocery stores overlook entirely. Fish backs, pork riblets, braised ribs--these are ingredients that serious home cooks know are gold for stocks, slow braises, and deeply flavorful one-pot meals. Finding them fresh and well-priced, rather than having to hunt through specialty butchers, is a genuine luxury. And that's really the heart of it: the prices. Everything here feels fair, even generous, given the quality you're getting. In a landscape where "fresh" and "affordable" rarely show up together, Hometown manages to deliver both without compromise. Shopping here feels like being let in on something the rest of the world hasn't caught onto yet. It's not flashy or over-marketed--it just consistently delivers. Honestly, more grocery stores should be built this way: thoughtful variety, real freshness, and prices that don't punish you for wanting to eat well.

I like to go at slower times so I have the room to lollygag and loaf about. My recommendations: soup dumplings, frozen mandarin chicken, strawberry licorice, and any other snack that strikes your fancy. I always pick up a couple bottles of the "two buck chuck." The Trader Joe's vineyard, Charles Shaw, is colloquially called "two buck chuck," but has gone up to $4 these days. Still, it's a good enough wine for me.
