I have been buying Penzeys Spices online for a while now. I have to say that they are definitely good quality, although some of the items can be a bit pricey. While I was traveling for business up in Birmingham, Alabama, I seen if they had a Penzeys Spices and nearby Homewood, Alabama. I decided to make the pilgrimage. It is a somewhat small store, however they are loaded with spices. Though I had just placed an order, I still managed to spend about 30 something dollars here and walked out with multiple spices that I did not know that I needed, but I'm sure glad that I found them. The staff was excellent. They were friendly and knowledgeable. It is obvious that they were passionate about the spices that they were selling and about cooking as a whole. If you find yourself around the Birmingham, Alabama area, I would definitely make a trip over this way. read more

I was so excited when this store opened here in Homewood, in fact I was at the store the morning they opened some years ago. I replaced all my spices/herbs/&c at no inconsiderable cost and simply ignored the over-the-top political stances of the company's founder. But as a long-time and consistent customer I cannot abide being called a "Fascist" by anyone, especially someone with whom I've spent a lot of money. I have no illusions that I'll be missed, but I'm moving on to some other quality spice provider even though it will be much less convenient to do business by mail. read more

I love the products at Penny's! If not for the owner's idiotic idea that he needs to spout his political views into the business I'd give them a 5. If you cannot get beyond the injection of politics or you are a dyed-in-the-wool conservative, go elsewhere - but if you want simply the best spices around and can ignore the politics, this is an excellent place to stop. I can't believe I haven't been to/heard of this place until now. We were killing some time before meeting friends out, and just happened to make a stop here. Spice Mecca.... if you cook, you need to come here! Spices galore! You'll pay a little more, but quality and variety def. make up for that. Store has a large variety of spices. For the most part, the staff is always super friendly with a few very minor exceptions. Really like how suggestions are given when you're looking for a particular dish flavor outcome. From my observation, the store is always clean, and the promotion are always a steal. Why would anyone want to buy their spices anywhere else. read more

We went two days ago with a group of family and friends from Athens & Ardmore, Alabama. Our ages ranged from 14 to 76 years old. At least one in our group is a VERY GOOD COOK & she recommended checking out her favorite spice shop. Staff is a little crazy, rude. My son left a drink cup by the door when we entered. We left , walked next door and realized we left it. Walked back to retrieve it. A red haired lady on staff was outside and kicked the cup toward a car parked in front of the store and walked back in while grumbling . That was a little nuts if you ask me. This was my first visit to the Penzey's store after ordering a ton of things online. Right off the bat, this is probably the best smelling shop I've ever been in! The variety of spices is incredible. I specifically came in today to get my (no purchase necessary) free bottle of cinnamon sugar. Penzeys is all about raising awareness on political and social issues, and chose to give away cinnamon sugar to bring awareness to the plight of families being torn apart in the US while seeking asylum. Cinnamon sugar was chosen because it evokes thoughts of home and family. Penzeys was also offering a free spice blend called Quebec beef spice with a $5 purchase. I picked up some Chicago Steak Rub, which is the BEST steak seasoning we have ever had, hands down. I also grabbed a bottle of Bouquet Garni, which is a blend found in some of my fancier recipes. The store is really inviting, with jars of spices sitting out that you can sniff. The employees were friendly, knowledgeable, and attentive. Prices are a little higher than what you're probably used to spending on spices, but the quality and selection can't be beat. Can I give less than one star? Stale, old, questionable ingredients. Store brand spices at Walmart are better.

I love Penzeys. It's not the cheapest but the spices are always the best. I love the Aleppo pepper, Fox Point, Greek Seasoning, Salsa Pico, Dill Weed, dried shallots, and find the saffron and vanilla beans to be great and reasonably priced too. Also, the employees are always so nice and helpful. Don't forget to sign up for the mailing list to get coupons to try a free slice once every couple of months. This spice store is amazing! The only taco seasoning we will ever use again is Penzeys!! Yesterday, I wanted to make spicy Indian cabbage. Problem was, I had no whole cumin seeds, and no Sanaam peppers. (I wanted to make it closest to the real deal I could, so I didn't want just any off-the-shelf grocery store dried chilis. Penzey's turned out to be the only place close to me that could fill both needs- and then some. If you want peppercorns, you'd better decide what kind. They have about a half-dozen varieties. There are also multiple cinnamons, salts, and much more. This isn;t just a spice store, it;s a spice experience. As you walk through, you can open jars of spices to smell them and get a sense of the differences. (Relax, Cupcake...the spices in the sniffing jars aren't actually the ones you buy. There are little jars of the spices all packaged up for you.) Of course, the biggest draw is the amazing range of spices and herbs and such (including some supplies for me as a mead maker and bee keeper- Madagascar AND Mexican vanilla, and empty jars, respectively). But the staff is also fabulous. Every person I've ever dealt with in a Penzey's (in Alabama and in Wisconsin) has been very helpful and very friendly. I always have fun chats with them at the register, and leave the store with a smile on my face. This place easily gets five stars. read more

Let's just say if you are a real cook then you MUST visit this amazing store. The variety of spices are unbelievable. I have so many favorites it's hard to choose just one. However, the Fox Point, Sunny Paris and Shallot Pepper always seem be empty :). Penzey's is located in a little strip in downtown Homewood and is open on Sunday's after 12:00. Whenever my son is in town, he never goes home without stocking up on as many spices as he can. The prices are very reasonable and the staff is friendly and helpful. When you sign the register you will begin receiving their magazine which not only lists amazing recipes and products but there is usually a coupon for a free spice to try. I have officially decided that I am now a gourmet chef thanks to Penzeys! I promise you that after one visit you will be hooked! read more

You can get almost any dry spice here. I use many spices in cooking, and, have always been able to find what I want here. If you need pastes, you will not find them here. For most Asian and some Indian condiments you will need to go to one of those types of stores. But high- quality dry spices, either ground, whole or crushed, you will find here. Prices are higher than grocery stores. read more
