So, the only reason we still store our property here is because it's too much of a hassle to move everything. Otherwise, there's very little that's all that great about this facility.
Pros:
1. Very easy to locate the facility. It's convenient to most major highways in the area. Be careful entering and exiting - as it's right on RT 1 and there's no room to pull out and speed up
2. Has everything you'd want for a storage property - climate control, rolling carts available, lots of differently sized units, plenty of convenient places to park to unload
3. Very secure - you need a code to enter the gate, a code to use the elevator, a code to exit. You can only access the floor your unit is located on. The property is well lit and I've never felt unsafe or uneasy entering my unit at night or alone.
4. Staff is very friendly. Not overly helpful, but friendly and courteous.
5. Very clean
6. Carts - it may seem like a little thing, but trust me. It's so helpful that each building has a few rolling carts available to use. I've never needed to wait to use one or couldn't find one.
Cons:
1. Something is always broken. Either the elevator or the power doors...just something. The elevator was broken for months - they told us it was because a part was on order. It's really fun carrying an ac unit up three flights of stairs or having to buy a new suitcase because the doors to the building our unit is in were broken (their answer was to prop open the side door with some cardboard, which someone removed...and shut the door, which also was locked).
2. If you need assistance with issues, there's usually no one there. Sure. from 9-5pm, M-F there is someone at the main desk. I don't know about you, but that's not when I end up at my storage unit. When the doors were locked and no one could enter, they posted a phone number to their Salem facility, where I was promptly told..sorry I can't help. I can't leave our property. I get that - but then leave someone else's number who can help if there's a line of people trying to get into their units. (This was a Saturday at 1 pm. The person who normally is there called in sick. They had no coverage.)
3. Not 24 x 7 - they shut off access after 9 or 10 pm, so you can't get in. Not a big deal for us, but it may be for other folks.
4. The price keeps escalating. It was a promo rate at first (which I understand can't last forever). Now, they did disclose this and were very clear it was a promotional rate. However, keep in mind, you must add insurance to your costs. That's not optional, but also not included or mentioned until you decide to rent. Our rate doubled after 6 months. It increases every 6 months by at least 25-30%. After 3 years, we're now paying triple the original payment for the smallest unit.
5. The App - don't bother. It works but only kind of. You can make a payment. But, it looks like you still owe your monthly payment - even after it's processed. You're better off using the website to pay.
6. The termination policy is very, very strict and specific. Make sure you know exactly what and when you need to notify them you're vacating your unit. Otherwise, we were told we can be charged for a month we didn't use, even if we gave what I would think is ample notice (15 days?). I believe you need to give them something like 60 days notice.
There are a few more cons, but I don't want to seem too over critical. All in all, if I could go back and select a different facility, I would. I don't know if it's just this property or Public Storage, in general (this is my only experience using them). Now, it's just too much of a hassle to move everything to a new location. However, I think if one more critical item "breaks" (like the elevator or access doors), my husband will say, "that's it" and we'll rent a truck and move. We chose this property for its location, availability, options, and price. At the end of the day, it's been more of a hassle. It's still a 30-minute drive for us. So, it's extra frustrating when we can't access our unit because of maintenance issues. Personally, I'd pay more for a differnet location. The hassles and incoveniences outweigh any benefits. read more
