I'm shocked it took me this long to make it to Gowanus' most famous vegan bar. And when I finally did, it was for a special event vegan BBQ in their outdoor space. It was far too hot and humid, and I made the mistake of coming directly in office clothes. But the vibes were excellent, and the faina with mushrooms was incredible. My last experience with faina was having it as the base of pizza a caballo in Buenos Aires, and I had spent many years looking for this delectable chickpea pancake. It was even better than I remembered, here served under charred lion's mane mushroom. read more

If you do eat real butter, the vegan butter that comes with the Focaccia is not very flavorful and quite sweet. The Kelp Wontons were tasty but everything else around that dish was bland. The Hawaji carrots were flavorful but something was missing; it got boring after the second bite. Also would have been better with some bread on the side. Portions are small, prices are high (the wonton dish had 6-7 one-bite-kinda-small wontons and some leaves and was $32; focaccia was $11, and the carrots $21.) The interior of the place feels industrial and hip. Music is at a comfortable volume for talking. Didn't have a reservation but was able to get a table for 2 without waiting at 7 pm without any wait. But all in all, considering cost-value, don't think it's worth it. read more

I am not a vegan. In fact, I have been called Meaty Petey in the past (I do love the meats), and I've been told (erroneously) that I'm hostile toward vegans (not all of them, just one in particular and it's well deserved and has nothing to do with their dietary choices). I tell you all this because Public Records has an entirely vegan menu, and even if you are not a vegan, I think you should know that you can and will enjoy dinner here immensely. The room is huge and airy and filled with plants. It doubles as a music venue, so it's up in the air what kind of music you'll be rocking with (we heard a lot of ambient lofi beats, but it also sounded like there was a rave happening outside (turned out it was a funeral). Basically, this restaurant/venue defies easy classification. But I like it. And believe me when I tell you that the food was interesting, and colorful, and DELICIOUS. Whoever is back there in the kitchen is a mad genius. The seven of us shared nearly the whole menu, and the sheer number of ingredients and components we consumed blows my mind. I can't remember everything we ate, but I know that I loved the hot agave focaccia with plenty of spice from calabrian chili), the smashed fingerlings (I guess I love kebap masala and tulsi), the cauliflower gnocchi, and the crispy rice. We washed it all down with a few bottles of wine, and it was honestly pretty affordable for dinner in 2026. Truly, I loved almost everything we ate here, and I would gladly do it again. Public Records went from an untouchable tier to a touchable tier for me this past weekend. I've been for dinner and every dish was amazing, but the brunch didn't stack up quite as high. To start positive, the oyster mushroom sandwich is delicious. It's battered perfectly and topped with a tangy slaw and sauce, I wouldn't change a thing (besides maybe serving the sandwich with the home fries at the price point). The tofu burrito is where things fell short, the tumeric tofu wasn't well seasoned, and the big chunks of potato made it feel more carb heavy without adding any flavor or textural element. The salsa verde it was served with also fell flat, leaving me wondering if the dish was supposed to be this bland. The hokkaido french toast also wasn't my favorite; the slices of bread were quite thin for a milk bread and the dish was very citrus-heavy. If you're a fan or orange marmalade, that's what coated the toast, which wasn't exactly clear with a menu that described it as "cardamom marmalade". The ambiance here is always beautiful and service was without any faults. I'd come back to PR, but the brunch menu could use some revamping. read more

Hostile staff & zero respect for paying customers I've lived in NYC for 17+ years and have never experienced such appalling treatment. We spent thousands of dollars here--between advance tickets and drinks--for a birthday party (3-9 PM), only to be met with total hostility from the staff. Refused Paid Entry: A friend traveling from Ohio arrived at 8:15 PM with luggage and a pre-paid ticket. Security refused entry because they "don't scan after 8 PM"--with nearly an hour left. Two other ticket-holders were turned away too. Aggressive Staff: At the connected bar, we politely agreed to leave when asked and just requested a quick group photo first. The host snapped and started screaming at my husband, my sister, and four of our friends before kicking us all out. Spending thousands of dollars to be screamed at and kicked out for asking for a photo is unacceptable. I originally stopped by to grab a quick bite and get some work done, but I quickly learned that laptops aren't allowed inside, even if you're dining. There's a small café space in the front where people can work, but inside, the focus is strictly on the dining experience. While I was initially told that diners could work while eating, a server later clarified that they're shifting towards a more traditional lunch environment--likely to discourage people from camping out with just a coffee. Now, onto the food: * Furikake Home Fries - A definite win! Crispy, savory, and packed with umami flavor. * Smacked Chili Cucumber - Beautiful presentation, but a little underwhelming in flavor. It pairs well with the fries but wouldn't be my first choice again. Would I come back? For a vibe check, absolutely. I'd love to experience the summer or nighttime energy, which I imagine is amazing. We stopped by Public Records for late breakfast and a work sesh. We order at the bar, a matcha tonic, a chai latte with oat milk and a P[R]SL which is made up of pumpkin, espresso, oat, winter spices, black pepper and rosemary. It was amazing! The perfect warm fall flavored beverage. I also had a coconut and apricot granola bowl with coconut yogurt, apricot and dark chocolate granola, berry compote, seasonal fruit, tahini and rose...it was really good though the combination of flavors took some getting used to. I felt super healthy after eating it. Apply the super high NYC price tag and this treat becomes an indulgence versus an everyday coffee shop for me. Once we received our drinks we found a table. The seating area was brightly lit with natural lighting and there were lots of tables available even though there were quite a few people there. This is obviously a go to coffee bar during the day for those who work remotely. I was also told there's a speakeasy in the back that hosts dance parties and art shows. Visited here on a weekend after brunch to grab a little caffeine boost and rest my legs. Barista at the front house (small seating area where you can be productive [think 3 people max]) was friendly. There are some bites offered under a glass counter if you're looking for a little snack. There was no menu for coffee, so we opted for your classic oat latte. The latte definitely fell short: little flavor, watered down, and pretty small. I definitely feel like it's moreso just a ticket to your way in to chill. We hung out in the open patio in the back. Very spacious, great natural lighting as you're outside. Wonderful place to catchup with friends, keep to yourself, journal, you name it. Between the front and the outside space is a gorgeous middle space. Very airy, light, open, and organic feeling space where you can either have a coffee, enjoy a cocktail, or nibble on some bites with yourself or a group. They sell merch here: wonderful looking garment dyed tees and whatnot, but are a tad bit pricey for what they are. Love Public Records for both food and music! I've been here twice for dinner and throughly enjoyed both times. Delicious vegan food and fun wines! Definitely get the oyster mushroom enchilada tacos, roasted carrots, and heirloom tomato cashew burrata. They have great natural wines to pair. Oyster Mushroom Enchilada Tacos: Amazing texture with crispy taco shell and soft mushrooms, we loved the flavor and cilantro crema. Roasted Carrots: Never thought carrots could taste this good. I normally don't enjoy carrots but I could have this everyday. The kombucha glaze is sweet and umami while the black garlic mascarpone adds a creamy yet smokey flavor. Get it! Saffron Rigatoni: This was maybe 30s to a minute undercooked. Some pieces were perfectly al dente but there was one or two noticeably undercooked pieces. Would not get this again. Heirloom Tomato Cashew Burrata: So refreshing yet creamy. The pepper herb oil is such a nice touch, I wish I could have it on every burrata. Mole Brownie: Interesting texture, I wish it was slightly less crumbly and a little more fudgy as a personal preference. Berry compote was nice, but the horchata was a bit too strong and off balance for the brownie. At around 11, the restaurant turns into a music venue which we thought was super cool. If you want to stay to explore the 3 different rooms of music, you have to exit and line up to enter through a separate entrance for security and tickets. Came to see two incredible artists Allysha Joy and Audrey Powne, and was blown away by the sound design of this music room. The speakers are insane and the wood walls creates a warm environment. Great venue! A little too crowded for my liking, but i had a great time nonetheless. Because it's a wine bar, the only non-alcoholic option was water. Being sober, it would've been nice to have another option. With it being so hot last Saturday, ice was hard to come by. Overall, it was a lot of fun. My cousin Hasan DJ'd and my closest girlfriends came, so it was a blast. The music was perfect for the setting. Seeing so many different age groups and backgrounds getting together just for a great vibe was amazing! Another thing to note, it's not exactly convenient to get to by public transportation, especially on the weekends. I took two trains and walked 15 minutes. It's best to take a car. Went here for a ticketed concert in the Sound Room downstairs. There was a line outside when we arrived which we joined, but no staff giving information or directions about anything. Low to no information seems like the theme here. Nothing happened until we were let in just after doors at 10pm. There is a coat check available for $4(+tax)/person, kind of steep since what else are you going to do with a winter coat at a club? Of course there was no information about this on their website. The coat check was absolutely full by the time we left at 1:30, so get there early if you want to check a coat. Bathrooms were a handful of grimy unisex stalls. Club floor was medium sized, with the DJ booth at one end, a platform on the other, some sparse bench seating around the edges, and a bar on the right when we entered. They had drinks, canned beer and wine, non alcoholic options, and free water too. Drink options were varied and interesting, I had the shiso drink ($16) which was delicious and gone too soon. The sound system is fairly nice, but the crowd was, simply put, awful. Nobody was dancing and there were several instances of inappropriate touching and male aggression in the crowd that went unchecked. The venue should also institute a no phone policy on the floor, it was obnoxious. Overall I prefer Mister Sunday for dancing but I'd come back here for a different experience, hopefully the crowd is not always this lame and rude. read more

We went out to Public Records with the intention of a night of dancing/fun out in New York City. I have always loved going out in cities and was excited to add New York to the list. Public records was filled with endlessly frustrating situations and awful customer service. It started with a $25 dollar "ticket fee". The staff who took our money were very inconsiderate, ignoring costumers waiting to pay and summoning others to the front and then asking us those waiting to move out of their way. In my opinion, the music was boring and repetitive. The lights were also awkwardly dark and only allowed for brief flashing moments of navigation. Others might enjoy this ambience a bit more but our group settled on navigating upstairs to another room with less awkward lighting. In this room, we sat at a table expecting to sit and socialize. We were approached by a waitress who asked for our drink order. She then asked for a card which I happily handed over. We became very frustrated when She didn't return to our table for another 30 minutes. As soon as she appeared with our drinks, I asked for the check so we could get ready to leave. She then brought back the check but not my card. I had to then wait up at the bar for another 10 minutes while I told them what happened and waited for them to find her. When we finally got the card back, she spilled water all over my friend and didn't seem to notice or apologize. We couldn't wait to leave and I'm frankly disappointed in the money we had to spend here. We tried to make the best of the most of that "ticket fee" but ended up feeling as though the night was wasted. (Also a friendly note that this establishment does not carry cranberry juice so vodka crans are not an option!) read more

Used to love it, but the heat is unbearable I've had a lot of fun at Public Records over the years, including celebrating a birthday here. it pains me to say this: the HVAC situation on the top floor is a genuine health hazard. The space is beautiful and full of plants (they're clearly thriving), but the air is so hot and humid it feels like a greenhouse in July. It's hard to enjoy yourself when you're sweating through your clothes. Thr upstairs bathrooms somehow manage to be even hotter. If you're looking for a sauna experience, you'd be better off just going to an actual spa. The vibe is still great, but unless you're a monstera, you'll likely wilt before your drink does (also my vodka soda was $40). Went to see some DJ's play back in November and both my card, and my friends card got skimmed while paying for coat check. The reason why I know it was at public records, is because that was the only place that day where he and I both paid for something in the same place. Other than that it was pretty fun. Even though the restaurant wasn't even serving food until 11, and even though I had a reservation to spend real money, and even though I ordered a coffee without being warned, I still got spicily told no laptops allowed at 10:30. I was here for an event to listen to a new record that was being released tonight. It was a bit confusing once we arrived... there's a restaurant, a club downstairs, a lounge/listening room upstairs. We initially went inside the restaurant and were told to go wait outside until a black door opened. When it opened, we stood in line to get our tickets and IDs checked but were told by the staff that we were upstairs, so we had to go back outside and enter another black door. We ended up going upstairs to the listening room that had a small bar in the back. It's a nice area; brightly lit during the day but intimate once the sun sets but extremely hot inside (they only had the windows open). Got a couple of beers (from Threes Brewing) to drink while listening to the entire record. It was pretty cool since the artist, Eliana Glass, was sitting right next to us since her friends were sharing a table with us. We didn't realize it was her until we overheard their convo. She ended up performing a couple of her songs live. Definitely an interesting experience that we would have no clue about if Spotify hadn't informed us of the free ticketed event. read more

Some were worth a try but wouldn't recommend / get again. Since we were a group of 5+, automatic gratuity was included and we could tell the waitress was trying to kick us out of our spot. Although we asked if there was a time limit or an issue, Olivia B (our server) stated we were fine and that there was no time limit... yet abruptly cleared the table and brought the check even through we were not done (literally one person was still eating - food and fork in hand).
