I absolutely loved having brunch with friends here earlier in the year, so I stopped in for a solo meal of chilaquiles and sat at the light-drenched bar while reading a book. The bartender was kind and prompt with service. While the patio wasn't open for service yet, they were very chill about people bringing their drinks out to the outdoor tables to hang out. It gets quite packed so try to get a reservation! Would love to come back for cocktails and dinner and to hear some music spinning. read more

This is a really interesting place to rate, and more specifically my rating should go like this: Ambiance: 5/5 Drinks: 4/5 Food: 3/5 What's to love: The space is cool, spacious, and airy (hello, skylight and big windows). The drinks are good. The staff is chill and nice. If you're coming for food, it's great for those with allergies bc most things are gluten free and vegan. The jackfruit birria tacos were our table's favorite. What's not to love: The food is pricey and there are not many options. The mood at night is also a vibe but one that could truly use more light. Rating this solely from the perspective of a techno enthusiast. I like the vision of this venue -- it acts as a more accessible kind of place where you can see proper techno but also not have to watch people "doing it" in the corner. But I taking off two stars solely because the sound system in the "Atrium" room that Public Records is so proud of is absolutely terrible. Its boomy, muffled, and lacks any sort of mI'd-range punch and the only high end clarity is from the super high frequencies. Its really, really, not balanced. To put this into perspective, the Funktion1 system Output has on their open-air rooftop sounded exponentially better than this. Fix this and you will have a top-notch venue. read more

Beautiful patio, cool vibes, chef crafted vegan food that's not very expensive- one of my new favorite spots!! I made a reservation maybe 4 days in advance for a group of 6 on Saturday @12pm for my birthday brunch. The place opens at noon and we arrived right as it opened. We asked to be seated outside and they led us to their patio, which is beautiful. They have a few giant trees that provide natural shade and there are lots of nice plants around. There was good music playing, of course, and everyone really enjoyed their food and the portions were satisfying. The service was also great. We felt attended to but not rushed. -biscuit with jam: amazingly flaky and tasty given it's vegan- how do they do it?? -Hot cakes with blackberry cardamom compote, cream + match sugar: as good as it sounds. So moist, too! -breakfast burrito (or bowl): so many delicious ingredients and smothered in a delicious sauce -jackfruit birria tacos- my friend enjoyed them! This place is right up the block from my climbing gym (the cliffs) and its been on my list for while so I was super stoked to check it out. Got there around 7pm on a Wednesday and the restaurant itself was pretty empty but the bar area was full. Luckily, I snagged a seat and was able to get my order in. They have a really cute/spacious outdoor patio but if you're doing bar service you can only bring your drinks out there and not order food so I decided to just sit at the bar. I got the "ffir and loving" drink which was absolutely delicious and refreshing. If you like your drinks on the sweeter side, this is the one for you! I also got the jackfruit birria tacos which was super tasty and well seasoned. The bartender was also really nice & patient as I figured out what I wanted to order. Saturday brunch for 2. I've only been here at night for dancing pre-covid so it was lovely seeing it during the day. Such a beautiful courtyard on a sunny late October afternoon! Beautifully designed, with canopies and foliage aplenty. The DJ spinning created a cool, atmospheric vibe. The place oozes cool, including the patrons. Vegan menu. I ordered the mushroom melt and my friend ordered the burrito bowl. Out of the two, I would get the breakfast burrito as the mushroom melt was a bit heavy for me, though still tasty. This is one of our favorite venues in Brooklyn. It's located a bit off the road, but not difficult to find. Pre-COVID, we came here for the drinks and music and occasional dancing. During prime time, it can get uncomfortably crowded.. to the point where you just want to leave. But when it isn't toooo busy, it's enjoyable! The space is hip -- there's an outdoor area with a dj booth, an indoor area that serves coffee/food during the day and turns into the bar at night, and a separate room/entrance on the side for dancing. Pre-COVID, there would be some nights with cover but I think it depended on the event and what time you came. We came for the first time after COVID, and were really impressed with how clean the outdoor area was! It wasn't crowded at all, and there was still a DJ. The menu had limited food (I assume because we came late in the afternoon), a wine/cocktail list, and a few beers. The cocktails are a bit pricey ~$15, but my paloma was DELICIOUS! it had all my favorite flavors and I'd definitely get it again. We also really liked the hummus with naan and "crudite," which was just thinly sliced cucumbers and radishes lol. Amazing venue for DJ Victor Calderone & Avision's launch party of their new EP album "Chemical" on June 1st, 2023. The party really didn't get started until 11:45 PM. The space albeit on the smaller size, has great sound system. The areas were dark, lively, and had that Star Wars Darth Vader vibe as you walk into the dance floor. There's a cocktail bar on the right side of the dance floor with an eager bartender serving cocktails, beer & wine. It was an overall ecstatic experience as the party extended thru the wee hours (3:00 - 4:00 AM) the next day June 2nd, 2023. read more

Amazing vegan dinner! We had six dishes on the menu and all were delicious, bursting with flavor, beautifully presented and filled with nutrients. The highlight was the wood ear mushroom congee which had tons of umami. The consistency was more like a risotto vs. congee. Mixed with lots of microgreens and baked kale, each bite was so mouthwatering delicious. Second favorite was the Asian pear, almond ricotta on seed toasts. The texture was enhanced with the sunflower seeds. Mixed with the naturally sweet poached pears and almond ricotta cheese, it was so enjoyable. The baked beets and chicory salad were both lovely too and very unique. Least special was the jackfruit tacos which were good just not as memorable and creative like the other dishes. The food is very mediocre. It's not terrible, but it's not good either. Every dish was lacking something to make it a "meal". The cocktails were delicious; a little light on the alcohol, but tasty nonetheless. The part that really brought their score down is the 90 minute table time rule. Our check was brought to our table before we finished eating. We couldn't even order dessert. We knew about the 90 minute wait time from the website description, however, our server took a long time to take our order (fine. We were enjoying ourselves regardless) and then our drinks took a long time to get to our table (again, not an issue when the company is good and the convo flows) but then we were given a warning when we had 15 min left to our table. That part felt like it flew since the drinks and orders took so long. Our check arrived before we finished eating. After the table was bussed, a server asked if we wanted dessert. We politely told her we were being kicked out and instead of accommodations she said "maybe next time" for dessert. I've never seen a restaurant give up more money (we were already seared, not done eating, definitely wiling to order desserts and we all were about to order *at least* one more round of drinks. The food is sub-par, the service is lukewarm, the 90 minute table policy is atrocious. However, the 3 stars are for the ambiance and drinks. That's it. I don't think I'll ever be back tho. read more

This is a review of the music room, not the restaurant. I walked into the restaurant first and told them I was there to see a show and they politely sent me back out to go two doors down. I was bummed there weren't mocktails on the music room's menu, but luckily there was a non-alcoholic beer. The 7pm show didn't start until around 8pm. There were a few benches in the hallway to sit but otherwise the venue is standing-only which is kind of a bummer for anyone who might not be able to stand for an hour or more. When you walk in, someone scans your Dice ticket or can look it up for you. They also offer a coat check and charge $4 for every item. Coat is $4. Purse is another $4 etc. for such a nice high tech place, the bathrooms are still punk bar grody. Music played before the bands was kind of not great. I loved the band I went to see. There's wifi. No one really danced for the first band who was actually pretty danceable. Kind of a funny vibe, but again the band I went to see was great. read more

I came here for brunch to meet a friend that lives in the area, based on his recommendation. I love everything about this place. The vibes are great (love the plants), the service is great, the food is great, and the drinks.. They drinks are amazing. It's a little on the pricier side for me but you get what you pay for. I can't remember what I had, just that I enjoyed it. Probably French toast or something and an iced coffee. I also had one of their signature slush drinks that was soo good. The venue is beautiful. It's very open, and the natural light shining in makes it extra nice. I came here with a friend for brunch and I can see this place being a cute date spot (just drinks) too. Would love to come back here at night for a drink. I ordered a Negroni Bianco and I really liked it! It wasn't super smokey, but smokey enough, and it was also refreshing at the same time (quite the summer drink tbh). I wish I got another cocktail to try, but there's always next time! My friend ordered a matcha and honestly, it was as my friend would call it - "green milk". It tasted like milk and there were no matcha taste at all. Would not recommend getting this based on this experience. For food, we ordered the mushroom melt & the kimchi grilled cheese. I LOVE the mushroom melt - it is sooooo good. I would highly recommend to order that. The kimichi grilled cheese isn't bad either but I wasn't as in love with it as I did with the mushroom melt. Wowza! We enjoyed a full evening at Public Records, starting with a light meal at the full-service restaurant and concluding with a musical performance in the sound space. Well worth the A-train trip from our upper Manhattan nabe into this revitalized part of the Gowanis in Brooklyn. The vegan restaurant offers flavorful, satisfying options. I enjoyed a roasted yam dish with tamarind sauce; my husband opted for the oyster mushrooms with carrot-butter. Both were delish, and, to be clear, we are omnivores but did not miss animal protein in our meals. The mixologist at the bar is a genius: our Mescal-based cocktails were complex and delicious. Service: excellent. After dinner, we went next door to the music venue. Some things to know: there is no "seating", really. We were lucky to score a spot to sit (mostly because we are seniors and unable to stand on concrete for hours) but most of the crowd cheerfully stood, or simply sat on the floor. There is a bar with a nice selection of cocktails, NA options, etc. so you can enjoy a beverage while you listen. The sound system is INCREDIBLE. Did I say INCREDIBLE? It is really, really good. I went for the drinks and the music. I stuck to the 333 margarita I believe and woweee it was delicious. I think it was the pear. There was a live dj playing in the main space and a dj set in the back room. When we arrived dinner appeared to still be happening so the tables were reservation only. This was after 10pm. We went straight to the bar and while it was full, the bartenders quickly got to us and we got our drinks. Also simultaneously we got seats at the bar too. After a while we shifted to the outside space, it was not too cold of a winter night so it was fine. There were outdoor tables and chairs with twinkly lights and plants on the outside as well. The music was super chill, the people low key and everyone was just enjoying themselves with their respective groups. I want to return to try the dinner because it did smell good as I walked by. Around 1am the dinner section had emptied out and people who were enjoying their drinks and the dj shifted over to that side. Super cozy, a nice size area if you want to dance and just jam. This happened around a year ago. I wasn't using yelp back then, but you can guess how bad the experience was if this is the first thing I'm posting after starting. It was 30 degrees out. We had a reservation inside and they said the system messed up and all tables were reserved. They first offered us to sit outside in the cold. When we told them it was too cold and windy, they said they'd give us a table if we waited at the bar. When the owner saw our confirmation he apologized and offered us free drinks so we decided to wait. We waited for an hour and a half. They didn't comp any of our drinks and made us pay. After finally getting a table, we found out that the kitchen was now closed. One of our friends was starving so we asked if there was anything that they could give us. They said they could give us a cheesecake and they tried making us pay for that too. Go at your own discretion. read more

This is a review for the upstairs bar. A date brought me up here for a few cocktails and music and it was super enjoyable. I loved the drinks I was able to try. There was one with a soaked date on the side you were supposed to take a bite of when sipping your drink. It was delicious. I loved how creative all of the cocktails were. Though the music had some difficulty getting started, once it started rolling, it was very enjoyable and the space itself felt very minimalistic-chic. Where to begin... this is my second time visiting and it's confirmed that this place is awful. On both occasions the service was deplorable. The waiters/waitresses all seem like they've been given a lobotomy. They're just vacant and completely aloof. There's a lot of flagging them down, waiting and no one checks if the food turned out ok. The food the first time was meh. It was brunch and I had 1 item that was sort of tasty but left and ate real food afterwards. I will add, they bizarrely make Bloody Mary's without tomato juice. I asked the waitress, "why?" A tomato is VEGAN! She said... "that's not how we make ours." It was just a vodka drink and I'm not sure how they labeled it a Bloody Mary. Last night, I went before a concert to get desert. It was my partners birthday and we decided to try both deserts. A "cheesecake" and a brownie with "ice cream." When I tell you it was the most disgusting dishes... we could barely swallow one bite and they smelled horrific. I'm still left wondering... what in the hell was in there. The food looks visually appealing but the taste isn't. As for the ambiance, it's a cool venue but is very sterile and cold (like the people who work there). If you like obnoxiously expensive, shitty vegan food and crappy service... I recommend. Otherwise, 0 stars - don't recommend. read more

I think the atmosphere of the place really shines after dark, from the music to the candles. Truly surprised by the negative reviews here. I stopped by here last weekend before a comedy show nearby. We didn't have a reservation and they were fully booked indoor, but the shaded garden worked just fine for our drinks and quick snacks. We tried a few appetizers: a carrot dish and a tomato dish. Both were THE BESR VEGETABLES I've had in months. Their menu is seasonal and I don't recall the actual names of the dishes. I also ordered the Hen of the Woods Tostada which was equally as delicious. When I went they also had Summer Negronis... the Rhubicon was great (and a normal sized drink... in response to a previous review about half sized drinks). Just because a glass isn't full doesn't mean it's not a full size drink. I have recently discovered they do a special dinner the first Thursday of each month. I am definitely am making reservations for an upcoming one to try more (and to sit inside). read more

The Kimchi rice and oyster tacos were kind blowing amazing! So so good!! You will not regret ordering them. The cocktail menu is well crafted. I loved seeing ingredients that aren't typically. It makes for a unique and interesting experience. The staff were all around great. We told our waitress we were not pleased with a menu item and to our surprise the manager came to chat with us about it and it seemed she genuinely took the feedback. Then she comped the item! Made a trip here on a Saturday afternoon for brunch without a reservation. Was able to accommodate our table for two without any wait; located in their well-kept outdoor area that have heat lamps set up. Menu is straightforward breakfast options with a vegan twist. Between two people, split the Chickpea Frittata ($16) as well as the Breakfast Burrito Bowl ($19). Frittata is all around pancake-sized; a hearty chickpea interior mixed with tomatoes, onions, and spinach. Easy to eat and not too dry; the side kale salad could have used more dressing/other greens. Breakfast burrito bowl is massive - a monstrous serving of potatoes, lentils, tofu, and vegan chorizo. went well with the side salsa provided, but definitely had to take most of it home. To drink, had the Hot Toddy ($15), which was their only hot drink available at the moment. Great flavor in the drink and a welcome reprieve from the chilly air. Server here is accommodating and even got our dog a bowl of water. Despite being expensive, would come back to try other items. read more

Very hip spot with funky dj mixes playing and vegan food that was pretty delicious to this non-vegan gal! Food: 1. Jackfruit Birria Tacos - If you're a meat eater, it's not going to be an exact replacement, but it's a pretty close one. I liked the birria broth/sauce and the crunchiness of the taco shell. Definitely a messy dish to eat, but tasty and felt way lighter than if I were to eat a meat version of this. 2. Biscuits + Gravy - By far my favorite hands down!! I don't even really like mushrooms and I felt that they really got the perfect balance in using the mushrooms to get that savory umami taste without overwhelming the dish. I was pleasantly surprised. The fried onions on top also helped with texture. This dish reminded me a really good green bean casserole, minus the green beans, and add in some biscuits. 3. Green Falafel - Least impressive to me. Did not enjoy how chunky the falafel was or pairing it with a sweet tahini. Seeing as falafel is already vegan in most cases, this is where I wish they didn't mess with it. Or if they do, if they could really go for it and turn it into something special and different from the original. This dish just didn't do it for me and felt like they made regular falafel poorly. 4. Kimchi Grilled Cheese - Also just ok. The bread really shines here. Deliciously buttery and grilled to a perfection. I really enjoyed their homemade ketchup as well. It's got a good chunky grit to it. My issue here is that it neither shines as grilled cheese, nor does it let the kimchi shine in its own way. Vegan cheese is tough to deal with, and this one was unfortunately the consistency of an overcooked egg. Rubbery. The kimchi then kept sliding out of the sandwich and I didn't feel that its flavors got to shine through in a balanced way. I was just eating kimchi off a plate. Definitely needed the ketchup to add some sweet to the savory and sour. Ambience: Ambience is where they win for sure. To the point where it's kind of one of those places where that shines over the food. The space feels like a cool converted artist loft greenhouse with tall ceilings, a rainforest of plants, and light wooden tables and benches. There is always some interesting mix of music or ambient sounds playing. There is an indoor and outdoor space. And gender neutral bathrooms. My overall take is that I'd come here again. In fact, I did go here for a second visit to bring a friend during dinner time and thought the candlelit ambience was really cool too. This is def one of those places where I love the aesthetic, but depending on the rotating menu and how they approach the dishes, it's a hit or miss on food. For a hip spot to impress your date or feel like more of a local though, it definitely checks that box. read more

I'm so glad this place exists... And so close to my apartment! As soon as I heard they had reopened after COVID, I was so excited to come back. The theme carried throughout every single aspect of this place - from the cocktails at the bar to the food in the café to the incredible dance club in back and the custom soundsystem - is thoughtfulness, quality, and attention-to-detail. The atmosphere is intimate and the vibe is elevated without being pretentious. It should be noted that the menu is vegan. I am NOT a vegan, but the food is so good, it doesn't matter. We all need vegetables. The menu looks like it was completely revamped after the pandemic. I only came for a couple of cocktails this time, but I'm excited to come back and try some of the new creations. I think another thing that is important to note in terms of managing expectations is that this is a craft cocktail bar. An extreme amount of care goes in the ingredients, the recipe, and the creation of each drink. It does take a little bit longer to make, but it's worth the wait. If you are looking for a churn and burn bar, this is not it. If you are looking for an experience, definitely come here. The aesthetic of Public Records sets it apart from many restaurants of its kind. The decor is unique. From a first glance you'll see a dimly lit modern style dining room, as you look around you'll notice the dj station and above the walls are records. I came early and was seated before my friends arrived. Our server was helpful and provided good suggestions. The place has a shared plates style which is similar to places like ABCV and Seeds and Weeds except when it comes to portions. While the two restaurants are in a similar price range, their shared plates are actually shareable and seem more fitting for sharing. Some of the menu offerings were roasted carrots which seemed more like a side and tacos which at $22 makes each taco $11 each which is pretty steep. I also ordered the mole brownie which was okay and was arguably the only item I could see someone sharing. One of my friends had the cheesecake which was good, the texture was more of a mousse. Overall, I was not impressed with the menu, if I were to come here again it would be just for cocktails as those were the shining stars all round. read more

Food is fine. Ambiance is hip and a bit loud but fun. Service, however, was pretty terrible for a restaurant where you end up paying $100+ a head. My wife and I went for a 6 PMish dinner date with a reservation and showed up on time. Before we were seated, the host immediately and tersely told us we had 85 minutes exactly to finish our food before we were moved to the bar area. I've never had anything like that happen before; I'm aware that, post-Covid, there are timelines allotted to diners so they don't overstay their welcome, but it was never relayed to me so brusquely, let alone before I sat down. We noticed that when other couples were seated next to us, they were not privy to the same warning. My wife and I joked about it for a bit, and five minutes later, someone came to take our order. (We asked to keep a menu and were told that we were to only order all at once, which is perfectly understandable.) Yet after the first plate came fifteen minutes later, the rest of our plates (four of them) followed 45+ minutes later, putting a motor on how long we had to "enjoy" our food. We were also missing two plates, which we accepted as fate so long as we didn't have to be ushered into the bar to enjoy them. By the time the bill came, we realized we were charged for the plates that never came. Twenty minutes later -- after our table expiry time -- the issue was resolved, albeit with all hands on deck to fix it on the POS system and some convincing of the staff that no, seriously, we did not receive some of the things we were being billed for. This happened a couple of months ago, and it's stuck with me. The food is really good, but costly and not worth suffering through the service. My guess is they were understaffed, or had dealt with something unpleasant earlier, but we bore the brunt end of that. That's why this is a two-star rating: while good food is worth the cost and travel to this otherwise dismal part of Gowanus, it is not worth negative service that detracts from the experience. read more
