Dinner at Pub 517 in Tranquility, N.J. (sounds like a fictitious name from a Twilight Zone episode) with long time friends. Cool, comfortable, rustic, vibrant, neighborhood type of bar/restaurant with a sports theme vibe. A lot of similarities to Pub 199 in Mt. Arlington, including the 2 dozen clams that I can never pass up. Food was very good, with generous sized portions, and service was friendly and prompt. Came here for my birthday dinner and I'm not happy that I did. Steaks were overcooked for medium. No pink whatsoever. The chicken parm had no pasta and the garlic bread tasted stale. We weren't told as we were seated that it was cash only so the atm hit us for an extra charge. The waitress had a bad attitude and was less than attentive. This place used to be a family favorite years ago, but I highly doubt we will be coming back. read more

Very few people in the restaurant, which should been a sign. One waitress and one bartender. We ordered two virgin bloody Mary's, so full of horseradish it was undrinkable. Chicken parm sandwich was a huge roll with blanket of cheese on top and a ladle of marinara on top of that and very little super dry chicken inside. Total bill was way more than expected bc we were charged for a regular Bloody Mary not a virgin and when we asked the waitress, she was very bothered and asked the bartender who didn't move an inch and proceeded to call someone on her cell phone instead of having any form of customer service. Very happy with the prices. I personally had a steak dinner. The food didn't blow me away, but I had no complaints. The side veggie was from a can, but I'd still rather have it than not. Wow did this place go downhill. Horrible. The only item good in my meal was the baked potato. Clams were old, like from the night before and reheated, had to send them back. The snow crab was old too and some legs barely had any meat in them, small portion for $47 totally not worth it. Friend had the T-bone which had more fat than meat. What a beautiful location. We've been wanting to go here for years. Especially since we've been going to Pub 199 for decades. On the positive side our waitress was very nice and attentive. The clams and shrimp cocktail were good. Now for the bad. My daughter's burger was over cooked and flavorless. My wife's Lobster was okay but nothing great. My steak was overcooked and grisly. I sent it back. Something that I never do. My second steak arrived and was again over cooked. Except this time not only over cooked but flavorless. So now for the worse part. The Manager comes over in a huff and ask what's wrong. So I go into the details and instead of just comping my meal. "Something I never do. I'm not looking for a free meal but her attitude Pissed me off" she takes the steak and leaves the table. We're all looking at each other like WTF! The poor waitress comes over with the check and they gave me credit for the streak portion of the bill. Honestly the right thing to do would've been to comp my entire meal. Especially since they F'd up twice. The manager needs to be retrained and the cook could definitely use some lessons. Will we be going back? Unfortunately probably not. let me start with we like to have a drink at the bar before dinner, then sit in the dining room for dinner. Sat at the bar and the barmaid said I'll be with you in a minute. OK she proceeded to do some paperwork then goes into the kitchen and starts serving tables on the patio , ok about 10 minutes later we decided to just sit at a table. Get to the table ordered a bottle of Kendall Jackson Chardonnay, waiter come back after about 10 minutes with 2 glasses of wine, send it back and waited literally another 10 minute when he came back with a warm bottle on ice. My girlfriend ordered two appetizers for dinner and I ordered the steak, we asked for them to come out together. The two appetizers came out there was no silverware or napkins on the table I asked for them waiter said they were washing them (the place was far from busy) the apps were eaten by hand, l assumed my steak was on its way after awhile I the waiter came to the table to ask how the appetizers were, I asked where the heck is my steak? He said they time it so you could eat your appetizers first I said we asked for them together. Finally my t-bone came out without silverware I couldn't believe it, however, it only took about 2 minutes for it to arrive with a remark "At least you know they are clean". The steak was med cooked to my liking however a little tough. Overall, this was my go to instead of Pub 199 andI was disappointed with the service and the food, not having cleaned silverware is unacceptable And is a management issue . The seafood prices are outrageous : lobster 39.95/57.98 snow carb 40.95/58.95 King crab 58.95/76.95 I know prices have gone up all over but I feel these price are way above board, being that ShopRite sells a 1.5lb lobster for $14, and 1 dozen clams for $5.99 and what could a potato cost 1 dollar? My family loves to come here and eat snow crabs. They also have yummy lobster bisque. Love the atmosphere, we used to go to pub 199 but this place is worth the extra ten minute drive. Much more intimate and cozy, and we think the menu is bigger and food a bit better. Can't wait to sit outside, such a beautiful location. Afterward go to tranquility farms across the street for amazing ice cream. read more

After waiting four years to try Pub 517 again we decided to go there last night. The pricing is unbelievably high-king crab legs were $92 a lobster was $54 and the clams were $20. The restaurant was nearly empty so I guess people are fed up fed up with these high prices. My party was a family of five and I was the only one that had seafood (lobster). Others had a pork roll sandwich, mozzarella stick appetizer, a pasta dish, and a burger. The price with a tip was $180 crazy, will never be back! read more

Basic place with outstanding shellfish! Really, the star of the show is the clams & snow crab. The snow crab serving is very large - trust me - you get a lot of crab. The lobster is good but I'd like a larger serving. The prices are VERY reasonable & servers are friendly. I have been going here since before it was even Pub 199 sinc ethe buyout, things were good. Prices great. I go about once a month. Dinner or lunch and the quality has gone down. This past week the burger tasted off. The side of fries, making it a Felix were very good, however it was a very small portion. I used to have a beer or two, but the taps always seemed to have a weird taste and as a beer snob, even the higher end beers had a taste specific to Pub 517. This time I ordered a soda and as usual comes in a smallish plastic cup, but it was filled with ice and had maybe 8 oz of soda and that was almost like watered down. I'm saddened by what has happened. You can't even order a single dozen of clams anymore. This was one of my go to places and I'm sad to say that aside from family get together a once a summer, I won't be going for my monthly friends meet ups for meals. We have all decided we would rather go somewhere else for the price and quality. Oh and they removed the best deal on the menu. Sadly one of our groups favorites. Maybe we will come back in a few months, but this time was our last hope as we have given it a few tries, each time hoping it would improve, but we all agreed it has gone the other way. Maybe giving it a few months break and we will see. I haven't rated it or reviewed until now out of hope for better things coming, but hoping this helps. Honestly, we loved coming here, so this is not posted for anything other than hoping the quality goes back to where it once was. We didn't mind the price change. Heck the one drink limit even, which is silly paying for a bottle of Poland spring water, but I'd hate to lose some place that was once so good and as for middle of the road fine, but it was so good and hope it returns to its former glory. The waitress said because of the pandemic it is hard to get seafood therefore they increased the price and decrease the portion. This place has gone downhill in the past couple years. This place is gross. The *only* thing they have going for it is it's in a gorgeous spot. We met up with friends this past weekend when we had a gorgeous 75 degree day in November (thanks global warming!!). Our food was gross. Our friends got the clams (dried out) my husband's steak sandwich was 'okay' and my fish and chips was disgusting. Soooo oily and gross. I had one piece and had the rest wrapped to go so I could throw it out. The fries were bad, the onion rings super greasy as well. The lobster bisque was actually good. My husband and I felt bloated and sick the entire night and most of Sunday. Probably because of the grease floating around in our stomachs. Drinks were 'eh'. Boring beer selection and the margaritas are made with a pre-made mix so bad I couldn't drink it. Not worth it AT ALL and I will never be back. read more

I found myself in Northwest NJ today with busted plans but Terry & Ray rescued me and took me to this charming place somewhere up there but I don't know exactly where. There's something here for everyone. There were families, groups of friends, bikers galore, and sports fans camped in front of the many TV sets. I started with a very hearty bowl of lobster bisque. I ordered eggplant parm--keep in mind that I know not to order this dish in a Greek dinner or a bar. However, I don't eat meat and wasn't in a fish or seafood mood. The dish was OK, even better than I expected and really dirt cheap. My friends raved about the lobster, king crab legs, or cod dinners that they usually have and thoroughly enjoy. Plus, the clams. I don't know when I'll be up this way again but if I am, I would make a return visit. read more

Nice open patio area. Staff wears masks, lots of space between tables. Can get quite warm in sun but every table has an umbrella. I had a burger and fries. Cooked to order, good portion. My table mates had grilled cheese, looked yummy and cheesesteak sub -HUGE, two can share! I've been here a couple of times and the service has always been good, food is good...lacks some touches that would make it really good. I have been here several times with usually 6-13 or more. We love this place, it is a bargain for what you get. What the HELL happened to Pub 517??? Stopped for lunch. Bar had 1 single and another couple seated. 3 people at a table in front and 4 people at another table in the back. Definitely not busy. Most of the bar top was crumby and greasy. Had to have the bartender wipe down 2 separate areas just to sit. Waited a good 5 minutes for "would you like something to drink"? When my lunchmate arrived, we ordered fried calamari. Have had it before and it (used to be) is great. Came out a good 25 minutes later (remember not busy). It was pale in color, cool and we had asked for a fra diablo dipping sauce and got plain marinara. (we subsequently asked and received a cup of hot pepper seeds). Then we ordered a cheese steak sandwich to split. Onion rings instead of fries and on garlic bread not a plain roll. Well, kudos to the bartender for bringing the sandwich out halved and on two separate plates. But, they came with french fries. Plain cold roll (not "grilled" garlic as offered and ordered). Told the bartender about not getting onion rings (surprised and disappointed she didn't notice). The onion rings came out quickly, but obviously the oil wasn't hot enough - they were like soaked in oil. UGH. Now to the steak sandwich. Meat was cut up in like flat cubes and way way way over cooked. Some yuk orange cheese melted on the bread and large chunks of "blanched like textured" peppers and fried onions. Just odd and not in a good way. Note to self and everyone else: Go for the Alaskan King Crab and the clams. Stay away from the rest of the menu. read more

Sadly, My son was invited to a birthday dinner at this godforsaken establishment. His clams were filled with sand. His silverware was dirty. His lobster was waterlogged. The service was abysmal. He almost didn't attend the dinner because of our last experience here. He has verified that nothing has changed. The rest of his group also experienced a terrible meal and service. We have been coming here for about a 1-1/2 and finally are going to write a review. We are extremely disappointed in the changes at the pub. Before the pandemic the prices were great and the amount of food was great. Now the prices are very high and the amount of food has been reduced. The king crab legs this time were terrible all my wife received for $45 was two pieces. Unfortunately our waitress didn't even tell my wife the quantity had been reduced, she use some excuse that they were larger than normal however if you look in the pictures from previous visits the amount of food has been reduced. I ordered a ribeye steak and unfortunately it tasted dry with very no flavor and tasted like a sirloin than an actual ribeye steak very disappointed. I think this place is now off of our list.
