The old bank building is now the brewery.
    Steve A.

Brew Weekend stop #4 was an abandoned bank that just happens to make beer inside. It's got a strong Scottish theme going right down to the types of beers they brew and the names. A lot of NJians know the Wee Heavy, so I wanted to try their others. I can say that this place never really got crowded during the day, and I think I know why. #1- no outdoor area for dog owners. (More on that in the Czig Meister review.) But #2- the beer game just isn't as strong here. The English Brown and Irish Red were way too similar. In fact, all four beers I sampled had a relatively modest flavor profile that trended to the same mean. While it's not bad beer, it just didn't bring the complexity and depth I would seek in a dark beer. I think your IPAs and lighter lagers/ales would be just fine, but while I have nothing against these guys, it's not my choice to return to, so 4 stars it is. P.S. You can't call yourself Man Skirt and not even sell a kilt! That could have redeemed you. For everything else they offer, including custom-made 64oz and 128oz beer tanks, they're not called Man Tank. They're Man Skirt. And not a single staffer wore a kilt either. Sacrilege.

Great flight you can mix and match beer and seltzer.

Great little brewery in Hackettstown. Street parking was all taken but there is a municipal lot just across the street. We were able to have drinks in one of the green house - igloos they have on the side of the building. All of the beers and seltzers we tried were pretty tasty, especially the coconut and grapefruit seltzers. We ordered delivery from a nearby restaurant and really made an afternoon of it.

Rating this one right where it needs to be. Right at four stars. Here's why it gets four stars and not five stars... - They have 9 beers on tap. Hear me. They're all very tasty. And they are made well. The dude that owns the places really cares about this place. He cares about his beer and he cares about the people that come into the brewery to drink his product. These are all the reasons why it gets 4*. Here is why it's not five stars... - The drinking room could be more cozy. The environment overall could be a bit more cozy, I reckon. I love the artwork, and I dig the old bank vibe they have. It's pretty dope. But meh. Feels like an empty church basement with tables and chairs. But I liked the beer so much that I bought some of it and brought it back to Kentucky. Feel that.

Great little brewery. Love the artwork and the repurposing of the old bank. Solid selection of beers left this kilted customer happy.

Awesome, awesome place! We actually found out about this place because we originally went to go to the brewery around the corner...after stopping there and seeing a long wait for a table and a super long wait for a beer, we looked up other places nearby and saw Man Skirt only a short walk away! Let me just say, we 100% made the right choice by going to Man Skirt. Not only were we seated right away, but we were actually being served! No need to wait in a line just to get a drink. We were seated outside at a picnic table under a tent. When it started to get a little chilly, they brought out heat lamps! Of course, we had to get flights. With great seasonal beer options and a good variety of flavors for hard seltzers, we were not disappointed! My favorite was "Cinq You" - it tasted like fall in a glass! So good. Every beer I had was just amazing. I'm not usually a fan of dark porters, but I loved "You Made Me Ink". My family got all different flavors of hard seltzers and we loved every single one. You have to try this place and have to get flights! On another note, the service was awesome. They were constantly checking on us and we received our flights in less than 5 minutes. Overall just an amazing place!

Awesome brewery and the owner is so nice! He is so passionate about the brewery. If he's around while you're there you should definitely pick his brain!

Seeing all the reviews and pictures on Yelp got me to make the 1:45 hour trip up to Hackettstown from Toms River in order to experience Man Skirt Brewing myself. Man Skirt Brewing is unlike any other brewery in New Jersey. I cannot think of one that has such a cool atmosphere. The funky, friendly, off-beat crowd will really enjoy drinking beers at this place. Upon my visit I found the other patrons very down to earth and friendly. The staff, of course, was super welcoming, too. That is very important for me as a customer. Otherwise I would just buy my beer from the liquor store and drink at home. This place is all about the experience. Frequent visits are recommended. I imagine every time you go, you will find new antiques and oddities to discover in the former bank building. You can also easily get food, such as sandwiches, right within walking distance, as they are located right in Downtown Hackettstown.

The kindness of the brewery has nothing to do with the rating and perhaps a gluten free mama has no right to post on such a page however there are a few things he that could be done to enhance the experience. The location, an old bank is unique and eclectic however I felt it was bare bones. I would have loved warmth and also live music. My husband enjoyed the Inigo very much and headed home with his own growler. Next time we go, I plan to bring snacks and some tea for myself :)

This place really puts out some decent beer, it's not my style low IBU w a higher malt and grain profile. However, what they do they do well. Man Skirt seems to traverse the realm between English Bitters and German Weiss. If this is your style this place is a go to - small community establishment in an old bank, friendly service - everyone's in a great mood. Go for it!

Barrel-aged beer in the vault awaiting release
    Chris L.

Have a fine beer right next to the mash & lauter tun, Joe the owner & brewmaster graciously answered my annoying questions while crafting 7 barrels of his Great Porter, which really is great. Eight beers on tap when we visited, I was delighted to find Altbier, very unusual for a microbrewery to make this style. Another great find was a Munich-style Helles lager, most little places won't bother with lagers, don't miss this yummy option on a hot day. The brewery and the tap room are all in the big two-story space that was once the People's National Bank. Admire the old vault with barrel-aged beers inside awaiting release. This also means you're sitting in the same room where the man is heating hunrdeds of gallons of pot liquor (hot water to you and me :) to 160 degrees, not to mention boiling the wort in prep for hops, so the cooling system is, uh, overtaxed. No outdoor seating. There is no formal tour, just a card explaining the process. You can see the pumps, kettles, fermentation and bright tanks rightt from your chair, and as mentioned you might even be watching the brewing process from said chair. The man was NOT wearing his skirt when we visited, for safety reasons when working around boiling water, but the bartender was appropriately clothed. Me, I wore shorts :) Bring food. No TV, so don't expect to keep up with your favorite sports event. Nautical theme painted on the interior is modeled after the tatts on the owner's arm.

    Harry P.

I like the interior of the brewery, felt almost like a cross between a beer hall and a cafeteria. Came here for the Groupon deal, ten dollars for a flight and a empty growler (they let you sub out for a glass if you want). I did not like that they only gave you the flagships for the flight, they won't let you choose any of the other beers on tap. I was not blown away by any of the beers, but they were all solid. They have a bank vault which is really cool, but almost feels out of place with the design of the rest of the brewery. Like the name, the bar tenders where in skirts.

He was thinking of getting food off the menu but we decided to see how hungry we were after the wings. 12 wings were plenty and we couldn't even eat those. The Jack Be Nimble w/ Jack Daniel's sauce were our favorites and came with plenty of sauce. We enjoyed the ginger garlic honey as well which seemed more like a rub, but the JD was wet and better. Plus they bring out fresh chips which are supper crunchy and delicious. The wings came out super quick and our server Crystal B was very attentive. You can sit along the bar for a louder atmosphere or on the other side for a quieter more family oriented environment. Hubby wanted a coffee and opted for an Irish Coffee while I finished my beer. This was, sadly, not a good meal and based on expectations easily one of the most disappointing experiences I've had in recent memory. I came here yesterday with my top-tier chum from the Kingdom of Sussex, along with my #1 Honorary Young Pup Chum, fresh off a 20-mile walk down the Sussex Branch Rail Trail - so a bit tired and very hungry. Black Forest got me (and my appetite) in the best situation for them, in theory. Unfortunately it stayed just a theory. The atmosphere in here by far is the biggest selling point. I love a good taxidermy situation, and this place had it in droves. We were seated near a bear, and had eyes on numerous other wildlife, preserved for eternity. The stained glass throughout the restaurant is also pretty wild - it feels like you decided to go to church in a European hunting lodge. It's also deceptively large in there, which I discovered later as I tried to locate the bathroom (there is no signage for that) and wandered into two or three different dining rooms. Just wild and really does set this place apart from virtually any other restaurant in the area (maybe the far superior Walpack Inn can lay a claim?). I was intrigued by the Potato Pancakes w/ Applesauce on the appetizer menu, which ended up being the best item I ate. As you can see in the attached photo, they're basically big hash browns. They were good, and the applesauce made for an interesting palate combo. In what ended up being a bizarre theme throughout the meal, the accompanying applesauce came in a small plastic container that you had to open. This to me is one of the more egregious self-inflicted wounds I've seen from a restaurant, but also pretty fixable. This wasn't a crab shack at the beach or a taqueria in Newton - this is a restaurant with white tablecloths. Why aren't you serving the accompanying sides in a nicer dish, like a ramekin? What makes it more mystifying is that they HAD ramekins or something similar - they served the wrapped butter for the stale dinner rolls in it. I genuinely don't have a clue what the thought process was, but it honestly cheapened the optics and is something they should stop doing immediately. For my entree, I went classic German with the veal wienerschnitzel and a side of spatzle. The wienerschnitzel itself was fine - I've honestly had better from a food truck in Jersey City called Mordi's (I just checked and sadly they've closed), but it had no sauce or anything so it was super dry and overall not that tasty as a result. It would have even been an upgrade to get one of their infamous plastic containers of basically any condiment. The spatzle was honestly terrible; I had an excellent version of this at an Austrian restaurant in FiDI called Schilling (which has now converted to a French restaurant, apparently; I can't with these closures. Lord.), and this was just utterly tasteless. My chum likened it to "brain noodles," meaning the noodles you'd use in a blindfold game around Halloween. Fair, but even some of those probably had some flavor to them. Huge miss. I'm not sure why I kept going at this point but I decided to end this situation with the Black Forest Cake. It was a little stale (maybe it's kept in the same area as the dinner rolls?), but it was okay. Could have been worse, so I'm taking that as a victory of sorts. The chocolate mousse within it got positive remarks from my other dining companions in the context of their items, so that's probably the play if you're hitting up the dessert menu. The service was mediocre. Our waitress was very nice when she came to our table, which was infrequent. It seemed like she was waiting for food to come out (which took a while) as the context for a visit, rather than taking initiative to check on us. The Young Pup Chum waited close to 15 minutes for a second soda, which shouldn't have happened, especially given that we were there at a VERY slow time (just before 4pm). And the price point was honestly close to insulting. Neither of us are opposed to plunking down some Jacksons for a nice meal, but getting a bill for $200 (plus tip!) for not great food was not a fun feeling to close out our afternoon. I hate to end this on a dark note, but given that my two recommendations for German food in the area have both closed, you might not have much of a choice but to come here if you're hankering for schnitzel.
