She had been there a few times, and even though she's from out of town, anytime she's in the Chi, she stops by. Another guy had already been three times that week! He even brought his other half to check out the basement and listen to some music. From what he told us, they have DJs on certain days, along with other live acts. It gives almost a speakeasy vibe. We didn't make it downstairs this time, but we already said that when we go back, with reservations, we are definitely spending some time down there. We came to Provare to celebrate my birthday after seeing so many posts on social media, and it did not disappoint! We ordered the fried lobster tails, salmon egg rolls, seafood trio pasta, and cognac shrimp scampi. Everything was absolutely delicious and full of flavor. The salmon egg rolls were my favorite, so unique and seriously SO good! The pasta dishes were generous portions with plenty of seafood. For the quality and type of food, I also felt the prices and portion sizes were very reasonable compared to other restaurants offering similar seafood selections. The service was fantastic! What more could you want from a place that offers welcome shots? I wish I could remember our servers name; she was such a doll. My sister and I kept it simple with a shared app and our entrees. The salmon egg rolls were good and not overdone. She ordered the lamb and I ordered the seafood trio, at the recommendation of our server. The lamb was overcooked but we were able to get it remade. So I might be the unpopular opinion... Here are my pros and and not so pros... Starting with the pros: Prive is more of a vibe than the dining area. Prive is the downstairs speakeasy, cute vibe, nice date night and more intimate setting. On the night I went they had live music which was fun to experience. Definitely enjoyed that. The waitress was lovely, a little slow towards the end in which after 30 mins to get the check the bartender noticed and helped but she apologized after seeing her later at the end of her shift. I like the elote corn and lamb was cooked well (medium) but they were over salted which left me disappointed. Also they charge a 20% service charge which is not considered the tip. I thought this was a thing with large group, meanwhile it was just me. I was annoyed but I was more annoyed to be told it is a "new Chicago thing" only to find out at other restaurants that actually is not true. Just say you are charging people an extra 20%. And frankly this place is so hyped that it is not going to matter because you will get business, but yea dont pretend it is a "Chicago thing." That left a bad taste in my mouth. I'm a Chicago native who no longer lives here, and I waited nearly a year to try Provare. While visiting for Labor Day weekend, I was excited to finally experience it. Unfortunately, the food, service, and overall experience fell far short of what I expected from an upscale restaurant. My reservation was at 3:00 p.m., but traffic had me running late. Between 2:45 and 3:10, I called seven times to let the restaurant know. No one answered, and there was no voicemail. When we arrived, two hostesses were chatting at the host stand, and neither answered when the phone rang while we were there. After being reminded that reservations are limited to 90 minutes, we spent about 15 minutes trying to find our server before asking a manager for help. When the server finally arrived, we ordered our drinks, appetizers, and entrées together, but they came separately, and the drinks arrived after the food. The food was average at best. The calamari was comparable to Applebee's, the salmon egg rolls were decent, and the lemon pepper chicken pasta was forgettable and something I could make better at home. For a $175 meal, I expected much more. To make matters worse, a staff member spilled water all over my feet while refilling my glass. Although the manager witnessed it, no one apologized or even asked if I was okay. The final insult was receiving our leftovers in a CHECKERS/RALLY'S paper bag. Other customers were given the same bags, which was especially bizarre for a restaurant presenting itself as upscale. Nothing about this visit felt upscale: not the service, food, attention to detail, or hospitality. Chicago has plenty of restaurants where $175 gets you a far better experience. We did arrive about 30 minutes late for our reservation, which meant we had to wait roughly an hour to be seated...totally fair. While waiting, we grabbed drinks at a nearby bar. Staff checked in consistently, bussers cleared plates quickly, replaced dropped napkins immediately. We truly felt taken care of all evening. Things to Know: You must arrive within 5 minutes of your reservation text. There's a 90-minute table limit (though it didn't feel rushed). Definitely make a reservation. There was a long waitlist when we left. Be mindful of add ons: we kept the crab meat on a burger to go and later realized it added about $15 extra. The fries that came with the burgers were amazing...seasoned with Parmesan and full of flavor. Overall: Great ambiance, perfect for dressing up, celebrating, or a fun night out. When we received the receipt, an additional $10.40 service charge had been added, bringing the total to nearly $70 after tax. What was frustrating is that this was a small takeout order. We picked up the food ourselves and did not receive table service, yet a mandatory 20% service charge was still added to the bill. When I called to ask about it, I was told it was company policy. The staff member I spoke with said they would contact the manager about removing the charge. My purpose in leaving this review is simply to make other customers aware of the policy before ordering so there are no surprises when the bill arrives. I love this place the food was great the atmosphere was also a 10/10 overall it was a good time but... they have workers that do not speak English and he cleared my table when i was paying my bill and i was done with my food, hey i get it they are a very busy place, i told the waitress no apologies were offered she just walked away and came back and said they r bringing u another dessert, i refused the dessert all i wanted was a simple acknowledgement and apology that didnt happen i was told to leave after 90 minutes. Black people do better, what happen to being nice even after i spent my money. Ph and i did ask to speak to a manager or the owner and that didn't happen either! read more
