Mark is just amazing. I know nothing about cameras and he set me up with the exact right fit for my needs. He even knocked the price down for me because he realized he was out of the camera he promised, so he upgraded me to an even better one for the same price! When I got to the location he was polite and very helpful. I had apparently bought an SD card without the adapter and I had planned on using the camera right away, so I thought my plans were ruined. But Mark jumped in and provided me with one himself to use for the weekend! After that he took the time to walk me through how to use the camera. The night went great and my friends loved how the photos came out. I would give him 6 stars if possible for the amazing customer service and for him just going above and beyond to give me the best experience. I was in need of an RF 100-500mm lens. Just bought the Canon R6 and was curious on a good a native RF lens could possibly differ as oppose to my EF lens with adapter could be. Well... it does differ and does matter. So... I called PROtog Rentals. It was a late Friday evening so I left a voice message thinking I'd wouldn't hear back until Monday. Surprisingly I got a quick response back!! It was the owner Mark. He said would meet at the in 30 minutes. He was there as I arrived. Super nice guy and he had the lens I wanted to rent. He gave me what I thought was a super deal. Grant it, I've never rented any photography gear before so it seemed to a deal. Mark said that he was going out of town for a few days and I could use the lens until he got back at no extra charge to me. Wow!!! What a deal. Mark basically carried with him the best parts of the now shamefully bankrupt Calumet (what that company did to its employees is downright unconscionable) and left behind the not-so-good ones. The moment I got word that he opened up his own rental shop, I took my next wedding rental business to him. I immediately transferred my business liability insurance to him since he has the same policy Calumet had about NOT having to grab onto people's money for deposits (number one reason I refuse to rent as much as a battery from Samy's) and placed an order. Smooth, like butter. Even though the operation quarters are scaled down--no more ability to purchase items--all of the rental items I needed were in stock--from the Canon 5d mark iii bodies and a huge variety of lenses and sliders. I don't think I requested anything he didn't have. Same cheerful service we've all come to expect from Mark--all smiles and "yes, of courses"--and even a new customer discount even though I rented from Calumet for years. Lovely. Recently I was asked to video the beautiful outdoor wedding of my best friends Son. Being a total amateur I turned to Mark at PROtog, who gave me a great rental rate on top notch professional video equipment along with a free tutorial on the best way to use it. All batteries were fully charged and Mark even threw in an extra battery! Why use professional equipment? The tripod is smooth action and can be left unattended when need be. This was a $6000 camera I rented, the long lasting battery, low lux and LED lamp provided me with footage well into the night. The resulting footage was a treasured memory along with incredible sound quality. For a small up charge I also rented a lapel mike for the groom and captured the entire vows without the ambient outdoor noise. This was a lovely wedding worth remembering. I have known the owner, Mark, since his days running Calumet Photographic. I'm very glad to see that he has ventured out on his own to show how a camera equipment rental shop should be. Customer Service? TOP NOTCH. Mark knows his gear better than the back of his hand and will take the time to make sure you're all set. Compare this to Samys' abysmal rental staff who couldn't care any less about being there or answering questions about gear. I once forgot my wallet there and called their dept to see if I left it and the guy said no, only to hear a second later the staffer next to him say, "Hey look! a wallet." Equipment Quality? GREAT! Equipment Variety? Good, he's carries the major brands, Canon and Nikon. Lens Rental? Check. Camera Rental? Check! Lighing? YES! He has prosumer lighting equipment for rent. Check his website for inventory or call him up. If you ever rented from Calumet, PROtog rentals has essentially the same equipment. I'm told they have plans to expand the lineup even more over time. Pricing? REASONABLE and AFFORDABLE! The pricing variance in OC is between $5 - $15 here and there, not enough for me to gripe about prices here, Samys, or Prophoto. My 5 stars are only reserved for the truly deserving, and PROtog rentals is definitely the best because IMHO it IS the best around in OC. If you care about service and reliable equipment, this place is for you. And If this is any good indication, my drive to PROtog rentals is 50 minutes roundtrip, Samy's 40, and ProPhoto is 20. I just rented a very sweet Canon lens from PROtog for the second time today. What I like best about Mark is that he's very friendly and knows a ton about cameras, lenses, and anything photography related. I think Mark is from the "old school" of business where you take the time to listen to your customer and develop a relationship rather than just treating customers as dollar signs. Even though I might ask some basic photography questions, Mark never makes me feel like I'm a newbie (like some OTHER camera rental places) and will give me sound and reasonable advice.
