I wasn't sure what to expect when I heard that protagonist was opening up a new location by Old Mecklenburg in an area sometimes referred to as LoSo. The one in NoDa is much smaller and doesn't have a kitchen so they were definitely going for something different here. The beer is good, but what really stands out to me is the pizza. For starters the slices are huge! One slice can fill you up easily. They are the only place I've been to that have slices that rival Benny Penello's in size. I went with the Tommy Callahan which comes piled high with meat. Huge slice absolutely packed with toppings left me very satisfied. My friend who lives by them consistently gets pizza take out from there so trust me this is more than a brewery. read more

Went to the Yelp Elite event at Protagonist Beer and this place didn't disappoint at all. The first thing I notice the size of the patio area which was huge and a good portion of it was covered. I greeted Ashley my community manager and other patrons that was there for the event as well and I made my way to the bar. When I entered I ran smack into the pizzeria portion and it smelled freaking awesome! I knew I would be eating in a few minutes so I continued to the bar and I ordered the Mercury which was really good. I made. My way back to the lounge area where the greatest manager ever Megan was giving us all a brief history on Protagonist and the naming convention for thier beers and once she was done they serve us their delicious pizza which was some of the largest pizzas I've seen. Date: November 21st, 2020 Rate: 4 Stars Reason for Being There: College football and wanted to check out their new location Time Spent There: About 1-2 Hours Experience: Pleasant, Amiable, Congenial, Good-natured Protagonist first stole my heart when they opened their first location in NoDA. They have virtuous beer, chaste grounds, and an overall smashing milieu. Since I was so fond of the NoDA location, I just had to try this regenerated (new) and ameliorated (improved) venue located in Lower South End (LOSO). Protagonist LOSO is located on Southside Dr/Yancey Rd across the street from Queen Park Social (to the front), The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery & Biergarten (to the left), Sugar Creek Brewing Company & GoodRoad CiderWorks (to the right), and down the street from Brewers at 4001 Yancey (one of my fav places...review coming soon). You really can't miss Protagonist LOSA (ProLOSO) because they have huge letters on the top of the building, PROTAGONIST. ProLOSA has a cornucopia of outside seating so when the weather is optimal, you can watch your favorite sporting events in one of their many seating areas. Once you walk inside, you are greeted by the bar, an abundance of seating, an upstairs area, and their food ordering section aka 'kitchen bar/food marshaling' sector. You can either walk up to ordain a beverage or sit at the bar to get the same result. If you want food, I think they just have pizza (I haven't tried any YET), you order from the aforementioned bailiwick. I forgot the name of the IPAs I requested, but they were quite tasty. The service was on point (it was not that packed) and the conversation(s) I had with the bartender(s) were pleasing and cool. I met another patron sitting next to me that was waiting on his girlfriend and he was personable (I don't know the relevance of saying this, but this is what I remember LOL). All in all, I will be going back in the measurable future to try out the sustenance and see what that's about. Super expensive. Pizza is sub par grease fest and is something like $30. Very impersonal experience. The people taking the orders had no clue of the size of a pizza or how many people it feeds or how long it would take. Like it was their first day or they don't care about people coming back (probably the latter). Ate outside which was nice but there was a guy with a boom box as a "dj". Apparently does trivia too. It was lame felt like I was at a college party that no one wanted to be at but had nothing better to do! I would NOT recommend eating here unless it's the last pizza left in charlotte. Just order one out for the price and experience, eat outside at a picnic bench, and play your phone on speaker phone really loud and obnoxious. Boom, $30. Phenomenal pizza and atmosphere! We got the deluxe pizza and the regular cheese pizza. They also offer 28" pizzas if you are really hungry. The drinks were also good, the margarita was OK but recommend the maleficent cocktail. Definitely get the pizza though! The venue is also huge, with a large outdoor and indoor seating area. Lots of TVs as well which is great for watching football. Good place to hangout with friends! read more

Pizza was great. More sauce and toppings could've been used but as far as flavor, it was still quite tasty. The bartenders were EXTREMELY nice and knowledgeable. I'm not a big beer drinker so she broke a lot down for me and let me taste about 5 different flavor of IPAs and beer. I've determined I'm def not a IPA fan Because of the lingering sour effect lol. I ended up getting a cocktail and a glass of Rose. Overall, i would definitely return. I wonder if dogs are allowed. If so that would be awesome. Great Date spot. I LOVE IT HERE!!! It is so open inside, there is so much space outside & the pizza was absolutely delicious!!!! It's a New York Style, brick oven pizza!!! You can order it by the slice & it comes out bigger than your face, just like the ones in New York, to where you can fold it in half and eat it, just like I grew up doing in NY. Only 1 mishap keeps me from giving this place 5 stars and that was the fact that my slice pizza took incredibly too long to come out. My sister's got their slices before me and I placed my order first. They made up for the mistake by giving me another free slice, but I couldn't eat it so I brought it home with me for later. The drink menu has a lot to offer here, as well! I got a good craft beer called "The Dolly," and it was so refreshing! The crowd was fairly young, as in 20-40 year olds everywhere. Dogs are welcome too and I absolutely love that about this place. I can see it being a kid friendly place too, so I plan on bringing my boys here if we're ever in the area together. read more

Packed Sunday at the LoSo location football games playing on every screen inside and hot. Multiple fire pits to be around if you get there early. Lots of adorable dogs noted outside. Selection of beer was good! We got a pizza and it was really good. We got the middle size. Pizzas are filing and come out piping hot! Only complaint is their to-go boxes do not fit the pizza so you end up having to smush or break the crust in order for it to fit in the plastic container. Stopped in to meet friends for the OS. Vs PS game to a packed crowd. Great energy and service through out which I hoped would have parleyed to execution of their pizza. After seeing the enthusiasm and pictures being posted on Yelp we gave it a whirl. Pizza is one of those things you can't really F up at the commercial side of thins these days especially at that price point. Welp the first thing that comes to mind on describing this pizza is SLOP. We got the veggie/pepperoni combo which was way undercooked due to the mountain of canned vegetables on top. This pizza reminded me of pizza Friday at the cafeteria which is never a good thing and should be avoided. If I could offer a pinch of advice is that Less is More and let the pizza cook more. The more I think about my experience at Protagonist the more I want to go back. We came here on a Saturday evening around 7. It was busy, but we were able to order right away and it was pretty easy to find a table. We started inside but ended up going outside since the inside was pretty echo-y and it was a little hard to carry a conversation. The outdoor space was super nice though and a great place for dog spotting! It did start getting busier when we left around 8. I've been on a cuppy pepperoni kick, so we split a 20" pepperoni pizza. I thought the crust was the perfect thickness, not too thin and not too thick. It also had perfect cheese coverage. I really enjoyed it, though next time might try a different topping or one of their signature pizzas! I'm not a huge beer person, but their Roy G Biv was super tasty and supported Time Out Youth Center - a double win! read more

What a cute new place! This pizza and beer joint is in the perfect spot between all the breweries. I went there a few weekends ago and I thought it was going to be more of a hangout spot than it is. It would be cool if this restaurant could have an outdoor hangout area since it's a pizza and brewery joint. I did not try the drinks but we did get a 28" pizza that fed 6 of us. The pizza was good but I'm honestly not a huge pizza fan. I personally think the small pizza joint luigi's has a better sauce and taste. Overall the pizza was good though. It's New York style and it has such a cool vibe. Recommend this place if you are in that area. read more

Ok so this was a really really good place for pizza. We got a 20 inch with spicy Italian sausage and roasted red peppers, and it was a 10/10. Also def much bigger than 20 inches! 3 people could have ate this pizza. We also had a half of the salad with cranberries, nuts, goat cheese and it was enough for 2 people. The portions are really big! The only reason I'm giving them a 4/5 is because it took a long time for the pizza to come out, and by the time we got it my sister was already done w her food. Came here on a Friday night, were able to find a spot outside. Live music, but played a comfortable volume that wasn't overbearing. Staff at the bar was friendly while ordering our drinks. Beer didn't impress me a ton. The Gwen was very good, but everything else was a bit underwhelming. What saved our visit was our pizza, the Homer Simpson, a BBQ pizza. This was very good, and big enough to give us some leftovers which were enjoyed later. A place I'd be open to returning too, more to eat than to drink. read more

personally, i found this brewery to be pretty ehh- met some friends to watch the Ohio state game since they call themselves the official Ohio state bar for watch parties. We sat outside where there were plenty of TVs up to watch the game, but it's mostly picnic benches so not very comfortable seating. I got a pretzel with cheese as an appetizer, and it was fine... ~greasy~ There's parking around the block by OMB because odds are you won't get a parking space. I have visited 2 times now and I would like to try one more time but this is not my favorite bar/ brewery in Charlotte. My first visit I stopped in for a few drinks. When it came time to close my tab, the bartender who was working ignored the line of people who were waiting to order/ close out to the point where another worker had to come from the back to help everyone. It was not busy either, the bartenders were just talking in the corner. My second visit was on a Saturday, I was not aware this was an Ohio State football bar? I didn't mind watching the game, I was disappointed that they only had a game day menu. I had come with a friend specifically for their specialty pizzas but the game day menu was either by slice ($5+) or their extra large pizzas with limited options so we didn't get food. I came here for an outdoor Yelp Elite Squad event, but we made sure to explore the rest of the brewery and order food and drink outside of our event. They have multiple large outdoor areas, which I loved, and the pizza...the PIZZA!! The pizzas are humongous and delicious! You need two plates just to carry a single slice.
