Food was delicious!! Pizza was HUMONGOUS! 7 of us and we didn't finish it. Saturday night vibe was laid back, family friendly. Liked the water station with water cups. Great for groups. Downfall which will impact if I return, parking situation isn't great. Parking on the street is hard to come by. Two lots on either side have a pay station that requires a minimum of 4 hours for $8.
Visited Protagonist during the LoSo Block Party (on Saturday) and had a great time soaking up the vibes. The space is big and inviting, and the moment we walked in, it smelled like amazing pizza. We had already eaten before arriving, but the scent alone convinced us to come back next time and try the food. My husband ordered the Queen Charlotte Pilsner, which was crisp, light, and had a nice hop kick. I went with the Gimli Oatmeal Stout, which was roasty, smooth, and totally enjoyable. The beers were served in plastic cups, but considering the Block Party crowd and people walking around with drinks, it made sense. We sat outside under the awning and enjoyed the cooler, cloudy weather. Plenty of seating, good energy, and even TVs outside, which was a nice touch. The overall atmosphere was relaxed and lively, lots of people enjoying themselves without it feeling too packed. We'll definitely be back and next time, we're grabbing that pizza too!
Friendly staff, solid beer, great pizza. The slices are big, about double your normal fast food pizza slice. A little cold, but I think I saw the "it's ready" text a few minutes late. Regardless, still great.
I can't believe I haven't reviewed Protagonist before! I lowkey love this brewery. They have some tasty beer and huge delicious pizza! Me and my bf came for a weekday dinner and had a blast. They allow doggos so we brought our good boy with us and he was able to hang with us outside at the tables. The area is so spacious and shaded. We ordered the Lando Calrissian and it was sublime and huge!!! We ate most of it there but had about 2 slices to take home and we definitely finished that the next day. The pizza was just as yummy reheated in the oven too! We also ordered the Jane Goodall dessert and it was HUGE. It was definitely for more than 2 people. It was very tasty, it's like their version of monkey bread. Highly recommend. I also loved the pineapple mango cider I had. Very light and refreshing. We will be back ASAP!
Tommy Callahan (4/5): Pretty typical meat lovers pizza. The crust was decent, and I liked the heavy corn meal texture. Homer Simpson (3/5): Waay too much rosemary on the chicken. Other than that, it was a pretty decent BBQ chicken pizza. *Fun, Ohio State bar! RATING SYSTEM 5 - Great (Need to get this again) 4 - Good (Would get this again) 3 - Ok (Might give this another shot) 2 - Not Good (Won't get this again) 1 - Bad (Telling people to avoid this)
This is definitely a bengals fan friendly bar lol great time! Pizza was great! Servers were very helpful! I will return for game day with the ladies!
Grabbed a pizza and mocktails as we headed into the city to watch the sun go down and see the fireworks light up the sky all over the city. The service was amazing and my glittery mocktail cosmo hit the spot on such a hot day. Everything was wonderful, thank you for serving us so we didn't have to cook on 4th of July!
Being a vegan was worried if there is anything we could have but glad to find some vegan options here. Food was good and ambience is amazing.
The Friday Lunch special ($15) comes with a MASSIVE slice of pizza, solid sized salad (two options - I went with Cesar) and one drink. I chose a beer because I happened to have the day off. However, you could also choose a non-alcoholic bev like kombucha too! It is the perfect spot to bring family or friends from out of town for lunch before heading out for the rest of the afternoon. Staff was uh-mazing as usual! For my NJ transplants who might get this pizza reference - it's about the size of a boardwalk slice, think Sawmill in Seaside. Crispy thin (but not too thin) crust.
Pros - more than just beer, street parking and a private lot, ample indoor and outdoor seating, close to other fun places, great lunch special on Thursday and Friday Cons - pizza is good (not amazing like I was hoping), hmmm that's the only con I can think of The pretzel was really good (so good that now I want to try making homemade pretzels). The pizza was fine. I'm not a beer drinker but my friend enjoyed his beer. You can order a 6 oz glass, 8 oz glass, or bottle of wine and the prices are pretty reasonable. The bottle is the most economical ($15 for a bottle of Pinot Grigio!)
I ordered the Maleficent cocktail, which was refreshing and delicious. Additionally, I like how they host various themed events such as trivia. It's a great place to hang out at any afternoon, since they have a patio and the weather is getting warmer!
Amazing brewery/foodie spot where you can enjoy delicious beers and outstanding pizza. If you're with a group and feeling hungry, get the Harambe, a mash up of Monkey Bread with cheesy and dipping sauce. This place had a great outdoor space too for warmer days. Everything is served at the counter with buzzers. This was my second or third time, and definitely not my last!
Well... What a delight! Just needed a night out with a friend and wanted some beer. Thought we would try this new (to us) brewery. The beer was excellent. I tried the Hank, the Meryl, and the Dolly: all excellent. We tried the pizza of the month, which was the Dell Griffith. The pizza crust was excellent; overall, the pizza was good. I thought that the depth of flavor was a little lacking: the cheese sauce, and the macaroni and the chicken were not super flavorful; the sauce was the most flavorful thing on the pie. The atmosphere at this place was awesome. The first floor has a lot of space to sit and hang out, the second floor loft has some arcade games and has more great spaces to hang out or to host an event, it looks like they have a private dining room for events, and the patio is excellent to eat drink and hang out with your pets. The bartender was awesome and was very personable. The music selection was the perfect vibe. All in all, a great night out.
I wasn't sure what to expect when I heard that protagonist was opening up a new location by Old Mecklenburg in an area sometimes referred to as LoSo. The one in NoDa is much smaller and doesn't have a kitchen so they were definitely going for something different here. The beer is good, but what really stands out to me is the pizza. For starters the slices are huge! One slice can fill you up easily. They are the only place I've been to that have slices that rival Benny Penello's in size. I went with the Tommy Callahan which comes piled high with meat. Huge slice absolutely packed with toppings left me very satisfied. My friend who lives by them consistently gets pizza take out from there so trust me this is more than a brewery. read more

Went to the Yelp Elite event at Protagonist Beer and this place didn't disappoint at all. The first thing I notice the size of the patio area which was huge and a good portion of it was covered. I greeted Ashley my community manager and other patrons that was there for the event as well and I made my way to the bar. When I entered I ran smack into the pizzeria portion and it smelled freaking awesome! I knew I would be eating in a few minutes so I continued to the bar and I ordered the Mercury which was really good. I made. My way back to the lounge area where the greatest manager ever Megan was giving us all a brief history on Protagonist and the naming convention for thier beers and once she was done they serve us their delicious pizza which was some of the largest pizzas I've seen. I had a great time here and I have to bring my wife here for the ambiance, great time. read more
Date: November 21st, 2020 Rate: 4 Stars Reason for Being There: College football and wanted to check out their new location Time Spent There: About 1-2 Hours Experience: Pleasant, Amiable, Congenial, Good-natured Protagonist first stole my heart when they opened their first location in NoDA. They have virtuous beer, chaste grounds, and an overall smashing milieu. Since I was so fond of the NoDA location, I just had to try this regenerated (new) and ameliorated (improved) venue located in Lower South End (LOSO). Protagonist LOSO is located on Southside Dr/Yancey Rd across the street from Queen Park Social (to the front), The Olde Mecklenburg Brewery & Biergarten (to the left), Sugar Creek Brewing Company & GoodRoad CiderWorks (to the right), and down the street from Brewers at 4001 Yancey (one of my fav places...review coming soon). You really can't miss Protagonist LOSA (ProLOSO) because they have huge letters on the top of the building, PROTAGONIST. ProLOSA has a cornucopia of outside seating so when the weather is optimal, you can watch your favorite sporting events in one of their many seating areas. Once you walk inside, you are greeted by the bar, an abundance of seating, an upstairs area, and their food ordering section aka 'kitchen bar/food marshaling' sector. You can either walk up to ordain a beverage or sit at the bar to get the same result. If you want food, I think they just have pizza (I haven't tried any YET), you order from the aforementioned bailiwick. I forgot the name of the IPAs I requested, but they were quite tasty. The service was on point (it was not that packed) and the conversation(s) I had with the bartender(s) were pleasing and cool. I met another patron sitting next to me that was waiting on his girlfriend and he was personable (I don't know the relevance of saying this, but this is what I remember LOL). All in all, I will be going back in the measurable future to try out the sustenance and see what that's about. Super expensive. Pizza is sub par grease fest and is something like $30. Very impersonal experience. The people taking the orders had no clue of the size of a pizza or how many people it feeds or how long it would take. Like it was their first day or they don't care about people coming back (probably the latter). Ate outside which was nice but there was a guy with a boom box as a "dj". Apparently does trivia too. It was lame felt like I was at a college party that no one wanted to be at but had nothing better to do! I would NOT recommend eating here unless it's the last pizza left in charlotte. Just order one out for the price and experience, eat outside at a picnic bench, and play your phone on speaker phone really loud and obnoxious. Boom, $30. Update: I changed my review from 3 stars to 1 star after being bothered by Protagonist staff and being bribed with a gift card. No read more

Phenomenal pizza and atmosphere! We got the deluxe pizza and the regular cheese pizza. They also offer 28" pizzas if you are really hungry. The drinks were also good, the margarita was OK but recommend the maleficent cocktail. Definitely get the pizza though! The venue is also huge, with a large outdoor and indoor seating area. Lots of TVs as well which is great for watching football. Good place to hangout with friends! read more

Pizza was great. More sauce and toppings could've been used but as far as flavor, it was still quite tasty. The bartenders were EXTREMELY nice and knowledgeable. I'm not a big beer drinker so she broke a lot down for me and let me taste about 5 different flavor of IPAs and beer. I've determined I'm def not a IPA fan Because of the lingering sour effect lol. I ended up getting a cocktail and a glass of Rose. Overall, i would definitely return. I wonder if dogs are allowed. If so that would be awesome. Great Date spot. Huge outdoor and indoor seating. read more
Great slices of pizza, adding any topping you want. Be careful if you think you should order a large pizza, they're "slightly" bigger than normal. The young family next to us didn't know this and barely finished 3 slices. read more

The food was quite tasty, with the exception that it took over 30 minutes. The individuals working were nice and attended to us in a timely manner. There was a group/company that was inside and they were a little over the top with the noise from time to time, but we luckily were able to love outside to the patio. The patio was spacious. read more
This place was amazing! It was closed when I came here, obviously I didn't know! I walked in and Jen the bartender said I'm really sorry we're closed. And then Ryan the manager said what would you like to try.iwas like.... Great beer. This place was amazing! For trying to only one beer, it was a lot of fun, great conversation conversation! I can't imagine what this place would have been like if I spent an hour or more. I even heard the pizza was amazing! Damn it! I didn't get a try it yet, but I will. read more

The more I think about my experience at Protagonist the more I want to go back. We came here on a Saturday evening around 7. It was busy, but we were able to order right away and it was pretty easy to find a table. We started inside but ended up going outside since the inside was pretty echo-y and it was a little hard to carry a conversation. The outdoor space was super nice though and a great place for dog spotting! It did start getting busier when we left around 8. I've been on a cuppy pepperoni kick, so we split a 20" pepperoni pizza. I thought the crust was the perfect thickness, not too thin and not too thick. It also had perfect cheese coverage. I really enjoyed it, though next time might try a different topping or one of their signature pizzas! I'm not a huge beer person, but their Roy G Biv was super tasty and supported Time Out Youth Center - a double win! read more
What a cute new place! This pizza and beer joint is in the perfect spot between all the breweries. I went there a few weekends ago and I thought it was going to be more of a hangout spot than it is. It would be cool if this restaurant could have an outdoor hangout area since it's a pizza and brewery joint. I did not try the drinks but we did get a 28" pizza that fed 6 of us. The pizza was good but I'm honestly not a huge pizza fan. I personally think the small pizza joint luigi's has a better sauce and taste. Overall the pizza was good though. It's New York style and it has such a cool vibe. Recommend this place if you are in that area. read more

Ok so this was a really really good place for pizza. We got a 20 inch with spicy Italian sausage and roasted red peppers, and it was a 10/10. Also def much bigger than 20 inches! 3 people could have ate this pizza. We also had a half of the salad with cranberries, nuts, goat cheese and it was enough for 2 people. The portions are really big! The only reason I'm giving them a 4/5 is because it took a long time for the pizza to come out, and by the time we got it my sister was already done w her food. Worth the wait though. Nice outside which is dog friendly also! read more

This was our first time here, and we absolutely loved it. Service was quick, plenty of outdoor space to sit.. food was delicious.. and their beer was nice too. Hubby loved their beers, and I totally enjoyed their cocktails. read more

Very cool place! Came here while brewery hopping with some friends. So much room outside and inside for activities! While we did not partake in the pizza, it smelled and looked DELISH! I got the Ziggy and it was amazing. We sat upstairs where it was less crowded. Also had a Maleficent cocktail that was super refreshing with lemon, blackberry and Deep Eddy's. read more
This place is great! It was my first time there (for the Yelp Elite event) and it won't be my last. Honestly, I don't like beer but after having a glass at protagonist...I think I've changed my mind lol. The beer I had was on the sour side as told to me by staff (tasted kind of sweet to me as my taste buds are weird lol). Nonetheless, the beer was good! The pizza was DELICIOUS!! And the slices were huge! I believe it was the biggest pizza they have. I can't wait to go back! read more

I came here for an outdoor Yelp Elite Squad event, but we made sure to explore the rest of the brewery and order food and drink outside of our event. They have multiple large outdoor areas, which I loved, and the pizza...the PIZZA!! The pizzas are humongous and delicious! You need two plates just to carry a single slice. The bartenders were also very kind and helpful, and we played with the table-top ring-toss games at our standing table. It was a fun time for a Tuesday night. read more

Went here on a Saturday afternoon and it was packed. The outside has lots of picnics tables for seating, so we were able to find a spot quickly. We went up to the bar to order food/drinks. They offer some of their pizzas in slices, and we were warned how huge they were so we only ordered one each. OMG, the bartender wasn't lying! This was the biggest slice of pizza EVER! I got a pepperoni slice and added banana peppers and it was soooo good! We had also ordered a warm pretzel to share and that was one of the best pretzels I've tasted. I didn't order any beer, but my husband did and he enjoyed it. Overall, a great atmosphere and I will definitely be back for the pizza and pretzel! read more

Wow all I could say is I've been missing out! excellent. The vibe was positive and the pizza was excellent. It took me 25 minutes to eat one slice of pizza. The pizza by the slice is excellent. Protagonist south end has such a cool vibe. Located in the brewery area by olde meck and sugar creek brewing, it is a great spot to stop by. They have a huge outdoor patio with fire pits and heaters that you can stand or sit around. The inside can get pretty crowded during the weekend but they try to limit capacity and most are sitting around a table so it felt a little more covid friendly. The beer is good and have fun creative names. Pizza is HUGE. They said you only need one slice and they right. Love a brewery with good simple food. read more
