Food was delicious!! Pizza was HUMONGOUS! 7 of us and we didn't finish it. Saturday night vibe was laid back, family friendly. Liked the water station with water cups. Great for groups. Downfall which will impact if I return, parking situation isn't great. Parking on the street is hard to come by. Two lots on either side have a pay station that requires a minimum of 4 hours for $8.
Visited Protagonist during the LoSo Block Party (on Saturday) and had a great time soaking up the vibes. The space is big and inviting, and the moment we walked in, it smelled like amazing pizza. We had already eaten before arriving, but the scent alone convinced us to come back next time and try the food. My husband ordered the Queen Charlotte Pilsner, which was crisp, light, and had a nice hop kick. I went with the Gimli Oatmeal Stout, which was roasty, smooth, and totally enjoyable. The beers were served in plastic cups, but considering the Block Party crowd and people walking around with drinks, it made sense. We sat outside under the awning and enjoyed the cooler, cloudy weather. Plenty of seating, good energy, and even TVs outside, which was a nice touch. The overall atmosphere was relaxed and lively, lots of people enjoying themselves without it feeling too packed. We'll definitely be back and next time, we're grabbing that pizza too!
Friendly staff, solid beer, great pizza. The slices are big, about double your normal fast food pizza slice. A little cold, but I think I saw the "it's ready" text a few minutes late. Regardless, still great.
I can't believe I haven't reviewed Protagonist before! I lowkey love this brewery. They have some tasty beer and huge delicious pizza! Me and my bf came for a weekday dinner and had a blast. They allow doggos so we brought our good boy with us and he was able to hang with us outside at the tables. The area is so spacious and shaded. We ordered the Lando Calrissian and it was sublime and huge!!! We ate most of it there but had about 2 slices to take home and we definitely finished that the next day. The pizza was just as yummy reheated in the oven too! We also ordered the Jane Goodall dessert and it was HUGE. It was definitely for more than 2 people. It was very tasty, it's like their version of monkey bread. Highly recommend. I also loved the pineapple mango cider I had. Very light and refreshing. We will be back ASAP!
Tommy Callahan (4/5): Pretty typical meat lovers pizza. The crust was decent, and I liked the heavy corn meal texture. Homer Simpson (3/5): Waay too much rosemary on the chicken. Other than that, it was a pretty decent BBQ chicken pizza. *Fun, Ohio State bar! This is definitely a bengals fan friendly bar lol great time! Pizza was great! Servers were very helpful! I will return for game day with the ladies!
Grabbed a pizza and mocktails as we headed into the city to watch the sun go down and see the fireworks light up the sky all over the city. The service was amazing and my glittery mocktail cosmo hit the spot on such a hot day. Everything was wonderful, thank you for serving us so we didn't have to cook on 4th of July!
Being a vegan was worried if there is anything we could have but glad to find some vegan options here. Food was good and ambience is amazing.
The Friday Lunch special ($15) comes with a MASSIVE slice of pizza, solid sized salad (two options - I went with Cesar) and one drink. I chose a beer because I happened to have the day off. However, you could also choose a non-alcoholic bev like kombucha too! It is the perfect spot to bring family or friends from out of town for lunch before heading out for the rest of the afternoon. Staff was uh-mazing as usual! For my NJ transplants who might get this pizza reference - it's about the size of a boardwalk slice, think Sawmill in Seaside. Crispy thin (but not too thin) crust.
Pros - more than just beer, street parking and a private lot, ample indoor and outdoor seating, close to other fun places, great lunch special on Thursday and Friday Cons - pizza is good (not amazing like I was hoping), hmmm that's the only con I can think of The pretzel was really good (so good that now I want to try making homemade pretzels). The pizza was fine. I'm not a beer drinker but my friend enjoyed his beer. You can order a 6 oz glass, 8 oz glass, or bottle of wine and the prices are pretty reasonable. The bottle is the most economical ($15 for a bottle of Pinot Grigio!)
I ordered the Maleficent cocktail, which was refreshing and delicious. Additionally, I like how they host various themed events such as trivia. It's a great place to hang out at any afternoon, since they have a patio and the weather is getting warmer!
Amazing brewery/foodie spot where you can enjoy delicious beers and outstanding pizza. If you're with a group and feeling hungry, get the Harambe, a mash up of Monkey Bread with cheesy and dipping sauce. This place had a great outdoor space too for warmer days. Everything is served at the counter with buzzers. This was my second or third time, and definitely not my last!
Well... What a delight! Just needed a night out with a friend and wanted some beer. Thought we would try this new (to us) brewery. The beer was excellent. I tried the Hank, the Meryl, and the Dolly: all excellent. We tried the pizza of the month, which was the Dell Griffith. The pizza crust was excellent; overall, the pizza was good. I thought that the depth of flavor was a little lacking: the cheese sauce, and the macaroni and the chicken were not super flavorful; the sauce was the most flavorful thing on the pie. The atmosphere at this place was awesome. The first floor has a lot of space to sit and hang out, the second floor loft has some arcade games and has more great spaces to hang out or to host an event, it looks like they have a private dining room for events, and the patio is excellent to eat drink and hang out with your pets. The bartender was awesome and was very personable. The music selection was the perfect vibe. All in all, a great night out.
Gluten free pizza!!! Delicious! And reasonably priced, unlike other gf pizzas in charlotte. Crust was crispy and not soggy at all. Kind of strange they don't have a draft cider, only one canned one, but they serve gf pizza. Very chill inside and has a huge patio outside. I would definitely come back for another gf pizza. I go often for sports and group events. Street parking or paid lot. You order and then pick up your item. Last time I ordered a slice of pizza and garlic knots which were good and plenty to share. The initial pizza was the last so he remade it for me which was a lot better. I like this spot and will be back as an Ohio fan. Overall good experience when I go and consistent. read more
This was a nice little spot to grab a beer and have pizza. Since this is a brewery they have many different beers available .I decided to order a flight of beers so I could try a few. I usually don't drink light beers, but Dolly was pretty good. When you go, you can choose 4 beers for your flight. Also, there are many good food options. However, most people order the pizza. You can even order by the slice. Beer and pizza are recommended. There are a few long tables inside to sit at, or you can sit outside if you prefer. The only issue I had was that it took so long to order. Other than that everything was good. The service was very informative and friendly. read more

So we have been going here for a few years and I have never written a review. We were at Protagonist the other day and I just have to say it is such a fun and well run facility. The pizza is solid folks. I mean it is very good. The atmosphere is great for families...we took our new puppy...no problem! Beer is very good. A bunch us, who haven't seen each other for months, decided to meet at Protagonist for some pizza, brew and reconnecting. Our visit didn't start with a bang as we had a terrible time finding parking. One of our group arrived early and placed our pizza orders so we wouldn't have a wait (though in the end, we still had to wait). We ordered a Jim Gaffigan (a white pizza), a pepperoni and a BBQ pie. The hand-tossed pizzas were large but, unfortunately, the toppings were sparse on all of the pies. The white pizza, which I was really looking forward to, was almost half plain pizza crust - there was so little cheese and there were huge bubbles where the toppings slid off onto the rest of the pizza. It was so disappointing. As we were catching up with each other, the band was setting up. We were ready to sit back and enjoy the music and some cold brews (BTW, the beer was icy cold and quite good). We knew we were in trouble when the band started handing out ear plugs. I am not kidding you. Now I wear hearing protection while cutting the grass. I expect to be blown away at a concert. To need earplugs for a band on the patio at a small brewery was alarming. We moved to a table far away from the stage. Once the band started, we realized that we were no longer going on be able to visit so we finished our drinks to move on to somewhere with a a more reasonable decibel level. Protagonist has so much potential. It's unfortunate that it didn't reach that potential this visit. read more
Stopped by when we were here for Front Porch Fest. Tried the Catherine (strawberry basil sour) which was delicious. We didn't eat but the pizza looked delicious and is huge slices. We had our puppy with us so we stayed outside but their patio area is very nice and had a good set up including TVs! read more

I really like protagonist ! the beers are super clean and crisp and they're doing something different than most breweries in Charlotte, which I really appreciate. For my non beer drinkers they sell draft cocktails and those are delicious and strong. The foods not bad as long as you're up for pizza. The pizza is huge and it's decent. I personally really enjoyed the meatballs. Location is good with lots of free parking in the area and walkable to multiple other breweries. read more
Big fan of this addition to the block! Great beers and delicious food - including pizza slices bigger than your head! You can always count on high quality, tasty beers here, but don't sleep on their food options. From delicious pizza varieties (and awesome names) to massively tasty meatballs, there's something for everyone! If you don't like their pizza combos, you can also build your own and get it either by the slice or a whole pie. Their physical space is great too - a large outdoor area with picnic tables, and a spacious floor plan indoors. I really just dig the whole vibe here! read more

All time favorite brewery in the city! The energy is always great here, plus the large outdoor area is perfect for bringing your pup. It's also a great spot for game nights. Food is great. Drinks are great. They even host great events. Definitely recommend! read more
We arrived just after opening because drinking beer at 11am on a Sunday is a good thing, right? Bright, open, airy and clean. This is a lovely drinking establishment and on top of all of that, they have pizza. Does it get better? No waiting this early, which was nice. We got a sour for my friend and a hefeweizen for me. A few minutes after we'd taken our seats, the cheesy bread arrived and very nearly got me to break my keto diet. So much garlic, it was wafting off the pan. It looked and smelled delicious. Perfect with beer. We sat for over an hour with no troubles, chatting about working and sipping beer. A great time at Protagonist whether your inside or outside, upstairs or downstairs. I usually take my out-of-town friends to a different brewery across the street. Well, now I have a choice because Protagonist is also awesome for showing off Charlotte's beer culture. Great place to grab a beer and get some food. I have been here a few times but don't know why I never reviewed this place. This last time I finally tried the food and it didn't disappoint. I'm a big fan of calzones but i always need to ask questions before I order. So after my quick q/a session I felt pretty confident about ordering a calzone. Italian sausage, pepperoni and mushroom....... YES!!! Grabbed a beer, sat for a few and my buzzer went off with the pipping hot calzone. I was really impressed with the final product. Good amount of everything. And yes I have pictures to show. Really enjoyed my time here and will be back. read more
This was my first visit here after reading other Yelp reviews. I am in town for work, and wanted to try some local craft beer, and this place stood out. Parking was a little confusing to me with the street lined with vehicles on a Monday. There isn't really any direction on where or how to order which is 1/2 star for me. I ordered a flight of beers - Dolly, Meryl, Copernicus, and Judy. I went back to try the regular size of the McFly. All really good options. While I am stout/porter girl, the Dolly was actually my favorite of the five. I also got a HUGE! Slice of pizza. It just happened to be trivia night while there which was nice to do on a Monday after work. Smaller crowd, but it was a nice place. Love the indoor and outdoor options for seating. I would probably return for when in the area again. Dogs allowed on patio which I absolutely loved missing my own Boxer dog at home. The other 1/2 star is for no table service. Standing in line to order takes away from customer service for me. Staff was great, and the trivia lady was awesome! read more

I really don't like using DoorDash, but I felt like crap and cooking/going out to pick up food was not going to happen. Their pizza caught my eye on Instagram and it sounded really good. We got Tommy Callahan (16") and Dale Denton (16") pizzas. I really loved both of them. The red sauce was really good and I loved the perfect pepperoni cups. On the Dale Denton, I loved the combination of garlic and gorgonzola. 16" was the smallest size and is still really big. One pizza would be enough for two people to share. Next time you want some pizza, check them out. read more

I LOVE IT HERE!!! It is so open inside, there is so much space outside & the pizza was absolutely delicious!!!! It's a New York Style, brick oven pizza!!! You can order it by the slice & it comes out bigger than your face, just like the ones in New York, to where you can fold it in half and eat it, just like I grew up doing in NY. Only 1 mishap keeps me from giving this place 5 stars and that was the fact that my slice pizza took incredibly too long to come out. My sister's got their slices before me and I placed my order first. They made up for the mistake by giving me another free slice, but I couldn't eat it so I brought it home with me for later. The drink menu has a lot to offer here, as well! I got a good craft beer called "The Dolly," and it was so refreshing! The crowd was fairly young, as in 20-40 year olds everywhere. Dogs are welcome too and I absolutely love that about this place. I can see it being a kid friendly place too, so I plan on bringing my boys here if we're ever in the area together. read more

Shortly after receiving our second vaccine shots, my wife I ordered Protagonist because we were too achy and tired to make dinner. I'm very glad we did. It provided us with an opportunity to try their Tommy Callahan and Dale Denton pizzas. We liked their pizzas so much we decided to try their cheesy breads the following week. We enjoyed both the traditional cheesy bread and the pesto and goat cheese cheesy bread. read more

This is the place to be for lunch on Thursday with the $15 special - salad, pizza, and a beer. It's enough food for 2-3 meals. The salad was fresh and light and was nicely balanced with my savory mushroom and sausage pizza. I've been here a couple of times, and I would say the food is better than the beer. The beer is crisp but not one of my favorites in Charlotte. It's sometime too plain for me, but some people like a classic beer in a sea of craft beer. As for the service, they are always friendly and helpful when I come in. read more

After coming in here a few times and smelling the wonderful aroma of pizza, we decided it was finally time to try it. The service was fast and the pizza was quite good. It definitely is not our favorite pizza in Charlotte but if you're in the area and need a quick bite, it's a great option. The sauce was very seasoned and sweet but the crust was wonderful. The overall atmosphere is nice and it isn't too loud. I'm a big fan of there outdoor seating though. It's a great place for groups and they have plenty of seating. read more

I've been to Monday night trivia a couple of times. Usually not too busy, so easy to find a table. The staff is always super nice. The pizza slices are HUGE. The Caesar salad wasn't my favorite, but not bad read more
This is my new favorite pizza place. We had The Liz and added pepperoni. Words can't describe how beautifully crispy their crust is, and the fresh herbs really set it off. 16" was the right size for two people. You need this pizza in your life. read more

Solid pizza, big covered outdoor seating area, dog friendly, fine beers. We opted for the 28" pizza for the laughs and it was such a fun time. Note if you get this one: it is not structurally sound. You'll be using a knife and fork because it doesn't really pick up easily! read more
