This was a nice little spot to grab a beer and have pizza. Since this is a brewery they have many different beers available .I decided to order a flight of beers so I could try a few. I usually don't drink light beers, but Dolly was pretty good. When you go, you can choose 4 beers for your flight. Also, there are many good food options. However, most people order the pizza. You can even order by the slice. Beer and pizza are recommended. There are a few long tables inside to sit at, or you can sit outside if you prefer. Visited Protagonist during the LoSo Block Party (on Saturday) and had a great time soaking up the vibes. The space is big and inviting, and the moment we walked in, it smelled like amazing pizza. We had already eaten before arriving, but the scent alone convinced us to come back next time and try the food. My husband ordered the Queen Charlotte Pilsner, which was crisp, light, and had a nice hop kick. I went with the Gimli Oatmeal Stout, which was roasty, smooth, and totally enjoyable. The beers were served in plastic cups, but considering the Block Party crowd and people walking around with drinks, it made sense. We sat outside under the awning and enjoyed the cooler, cloudy weather. Plenty of seating, good energy, and even TVs outside, which was a nice touch. There is a large patio area (that is pet friendly) that leads to the entrance. as you walk in there is a long bar straight ahead, and the pizza counter off to the right. There is plenty of seating on the ground floor along with some seating on a second floor balcony area. They have about 8-10 beers on tap as well as an extensive bourbon list. I had a Vienna Lager and an IPA which were both good, my son tried the spiced lager which was also quite good. I can't believe I haven't reviewed Protagonist before! I lowkey love this brewery. They have some tasty beer and huge delicious pizza! Me and my bf came for a weekday dinner and had a blast. They allow doggos so we brought our good boy with us and he was able to hang with us outside at the tables. The area is so spacious and shaded. We ordered the Lando Calrissian and it was sublime and huge!!! We ate most of it there but had about 2 slices to take home and we definitely finished that the next day. The pizza was just as yummy reheated in the oven too! We also ordered the Jane Goodall dessert and it was HUGE. It was definitely for more than 2 people. Well... What a delight! Just needed a night out with a friend and wanted some beer. Thought we would try this new (to us) brewery. The beer was excellent. I tried the Hank, the Meryl, and the Dolly: all excellent. We tried the pizza of the month, which was the Dell Griffith. The pizza crust was excellent; overall, the pizza was good. I thought that the depth of flavor was a little lacking: the cheese sauce, and the macaroni and the chicken were not super flavorful; the sauce was the most flavorful thing on the pie. The atmosphere at this place was awesome. The first floor has a lot of space to sit and hang out, the second floor loft has some arcade games and has more great spaces to hang out or to host an event, it looks like they have a private dining room for events, and the patio is excellent to eat drink and hang out with your pets. A bunch us, who haven't seen each other for months, decided to meet at Protagonist for some pizza, brew and reconnecting. Our visit didn't start with a bang as we had a terrible time finding parking. One of our group arrived early and placed our pizza orders so we wouldn't have a wait (though in the end, we still had to wait). We ordered a Jim Gaffigan (a white pizza), a pepperoni and a BBQ pie. The hand-tossed pizzas were large but, unfortunately, the toppings were sparse on all of the pies. The white pizza, which I was really looking forward to, was almost half plain pizza crust - there was so little cheese and there were huge bubbles where the toppings slid off onto the rest of the pizza. It was so disappointing. As we were catching up with each other, the band was setting up. We were ready to sit back and enjoy the music and some cold brews (BTW, the beer was icy cold and quite good). We knew we were in trouble when the band started handing out ear plugs. I am not kidding you. Now I wear hearing protection while cutting the grass. I expect to be blown away at a concert. To need earplugs for a band on the patio at a small brewery was alarming. We moved to a table far away from the stage. Once the band started, we realized that we were no longer going on be able to visit so we finished our drinks to move on to somewhere with a a more reasonable decibel level. I really like protagonist ! the beers are super clean and crisp and they're doing something different than most breweries in Charlotte, which I really appreciate. For my non beer drinkers they sell draft cocktails and those are delicious and strong. The foods not bad as long as you're up for pizza. The pizza is huge and it's decent. I ordered a flight of beers - Dolly, Meryl, Copernicus, and Judy. I went back to try the regular size of the McFly. All really good options. While I am stout/porter girl, the Dolly was actually my favorite of the five. I also got a HUGE! Slice of pizza. It just happened to be trivia night while there which was nice to do on a Monday after work. Smaller crowd, but it was a nice place. Love the indoor and outdoor options for seating. We arrived just after opening because drinking beer at 11am on a Sunday is a good thing, right? Bright, open, airy and clean. This is a lovely drinking establishment and on top of all of that, they have pizza. Does it get better? No waiting this early, which was nice. We got a sour for my friend and a hefeweizen for me. A few minutes after we'd taken our seats, the cheesy bread arrived and very nearly got me to break my keto diet. So much garlic, it was wafting off the pan. It looked and smelled delicious. Perfect with beer. We sat for over an hour with no troubles, chatting about working and sipping beer. A great time at Protagonist whether your inside or outside, upstairs or downstairs. I really don't like using DoorDash, but I felt like crap and cooking/going out to pick up food was not going to happen. Their pizza caught my eye on Instagram and it sounded really good. We got Tommy Callahan (16") and Dale Denton (16") pizzas. I really loved both of them. The red sauce was really good and I loved the perfect pepperoni cups. On the Dale Denton, I loved the combination of garlic and gorgonzola. 16" was the smallest size and is still really big. One pizza would be enough for two people to share. I LOVE IT HERE!!! It is so open inside, there is so much space outside & the pizza was absolutely delicious!!!! It's a New York Style, brick oven pizza!!! You can order it by the slice & it comes out bigger than your face, just like the ones in New York, to where you can fold it in half and eat it, just like I grew up doing in NY. Only 1 mishap keeps me from giving this place 5 stars and that was the fact that my slice pizza took incredibly too long to come out. My sister's got their slices before me and I placed my order first. They made up for the mistake by giving me another free slice, but I couldn't eat it so I brought it home with me for later. The drink menu has a lot to offer here, as well! I got a good craft beer called "The Dolly," and it was so refreshing! The crowd was fairly young, as in 20-40 year olds everywhere.
