    Emily H.

I had my first appointment at Prospect Dental this morning. I was expecting the worst since I haven't been to the dentist in years due to moving around a lot. When I say the worst, I mean maybe a cavity or two...nothing like what I was actually faced with. For starters, the dentist and the hygienist (Carol) were arguing right over my face during the entire exam. Things like "why did you open the package this way" or "I can't use this tool because it's bent" or yelling down the hall for Carol to come give suction. It was quite unpleasant but unfortunately not the worst of my experience. Once the dentist was done examining and scraping my teeth, Carol told me she was going to polish my teeth. Within a minute of her starting I felt a pain which I can only describe as the polishing tool getting caught on my lip. I loudly exclaimed "that's my lip, that's my lip!" to which Carol responded, "no it's not." She then asked if I wanted something to numb my mouth...if the tool DID NOT get stuck on my lip why would I need to be numbed for a routine cleaning...? Obviously I couldn't see what actually happened so I let her finish the cleaning, which was also not quite like I have ever experienced. Toothpaste was spraying everywhere, so much so that I could see little chunks all over my pants when she finished. She kept having to "re-dip" the tool into the toothpaste per every two teeth, I'm not familiar with that either. Finally it was done but I didn't even get to rinse out my mouth anywhere, she just stuck the sucker tool in and said close your mouth. She asked if I wanted to go to the bathroom before I left which I said yes to so I could rinse my mouth and see what had happened to my lip. (Picture below, sorry if it's tmi, but be grateful it's blurry because it's way worse looking in person.) On my way out, I told (and showed!) the receptionists what had happened and although they apologized they did not say what would be done about the situation or offer any remedy to my pain. I understand my visit was covered by insurance so it's not as if they could refund my visit, but I can think of a few things that would have definitely made me feel better about the situation before I left. I have been taking Advil since 10 am after my appointment to deal with the pain. I am very disappointed and will in no way be returning in 6 months for my second cleaning.

By far the worst dentist. Very rude to new patients. If you're not Asian, don't even be bothered.

I have only had 1 cavity ever in my life and my last dentist had never mention anything about a cavity. I took this as a red flag and went to another dentist and there was no mention of any cavities. Just switched dentists again after moving and there have also been no mention of any cavities in the 5 years since I have gone here and 12 years leading into when I first came here. These people are dishonest and just trying to sell you on additional unneeded dentistry work. Avoid.

I was originally a…read morepatient of Dr. Goldstone, who was wonderful and had many admirable qualities, especially compassion. After he left, I continued going to Cambridgeside Dental Associates and became a patient of Dr. Khalil. I remained Dr. Khalil's patient for decades and, during that time, had several root canals. I always trusted the practice until I began receiving treatment estimates ranging from $8,000 to $10,000. I complained about a back tooth that had already had a root canal, and Dr. Khalil informed me that I needed another one. For years, I had been saving money to improve the appearance of my front tooth, and once again I was told that I would most likely need root canals on my front teeth as well. At that point, I decided to seek a second opinion from another dentist. I was told there was nothing wrong with my back tooth. I have since had my front teeth treated, and they look great -- without needing any root canals. The cost was about one-third (or less) of the original estimate. Additionally, it was discovered that I had an infection that required surgery and had never been identified. I ultimately had to see an oral surgeon for proper treatment. I would also like to mention that there seems to be frequent turnover among the hygienists and front desk staff. Over the years, I met many different hygienists, and the office staff has changed repeatedly, which I find concerning. I do not typically leave reviews, but I felt compelled to share my experience so that others will consider seeking a second opinion when presented with treatment plans costing many thousands of dollars.

I have a lot of dental issues, I've always had them all my life. I've dealt with many dentists,…read moreendodontists, and oral surgeons. I have had dental extractions performed by three highly renowned oral surgeons in three different cities: DC, San Francisco, and now Boston, and this is the first time of all those procedures that I was not in significant pain beyond two days afterward. Dr. Lucca is extraordinary. Not only does he have impeccable bedside manner but his kindness, grace, and compassion, especially during what was an emergency procedure for me were extraordinary. His surgical expertise is on another high level caliber entirely. I stopped taking pain medication on day two, and by day three I was in minimal pain. Given my past experiences, I was honestly so shocked that I scheduled a follow-up office visit just to make sure nothing had gone wrong because I *wasn't* in pain anymore. How oxymoronic is that? Dr. Lucca's precision that I could observe during my surgery (this was a local anesthesia surgery), his reassuring explanations, him answering my innumerable questions, and his calm demeanor completely changed what I expected from oral surgery. He truly made me feel at ease, reassured, and relaxed. For the first time ever, in that I can remember, I walked away from a dental extraction surgery experience feeling genuinely cared for instead of traumatized. That says everything. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the front office staff as well -- Raquel, Courtney, Bossie, and Hailee were all incredibly professional, caring, calming, and kind. I came into this office in intense pain with anxiety levels soaring higher than a kite, and every single person made me feel genuinely seen, heard, validated my feelings and pain, and made me feel cared for. That matters more than people realize, especially when you are facing oral surgery and already terrified. I am also seriously impressed by the office's technology and communication systems. You can text the office instead of calling, and they respond incredibly quickly, often within 15-30 minutes. As someone who dreads phone calls, that alone was amazing. I am never calling them again, it's only going to be all texts. Like how easy and amazing is that!!! I think all doctors' offices should employ this technology. It should become the standard in how we communicate with doctors instead of phone calls. Dr. Lucca's Oral Surgical practice truly has it all: an extraordinarily skilled surgeon (Dr. Lucca) paired with an exceptional support team. The follow-up care, attention to detail, compassion, professionalism, and surgical skill are simply unmatched. If you have dental anxiety, need an oral surgeon, or want meticulous, compassionate care from beginning to end, I cannot recommend Dr. Lucca and this practice highly enough. I genuinely do not have enough words to express how grateful and impressed I am. Thank you so much, Dr. Lucca (and Racquel, Hailee, Bossie, and Courtney!).

The consultation was billed to my dental insurance and I received a reimbursement (without the co-payment amount). Next I had to get a procedure. I was told the same thing. First I pay upfront, then they bill my health insurance, which will reimburse me. Yes, they may have said they are out of network but they did not tell me to call my insurance first to approve the procedure. When time past by and I did not get the reimbursement I checked with my health insurance and the claim was denied because it was not pre-aproved. Shouldn't they have told me I should call my insurance ahead of the procedure? Don't they deal with insurance providers all the time and should know of the steps? Or were they concerned the claim was going to be rejected and they did not want my business to go somewhere else where it was covered? Hum.... They make you sign a lot of legal papers that they say explains everything. By the way, after the procedure the doctor did not fix my problem and told me I could go see another doctor.
