I have never written a Yelp review before, but based on the outstanding experience with Derrick and the team at Prospect Exxon, I feel compelled to do so. I had a major problem with mice infestation in our car. I took it to our local dealership no less than 3 times -- in the span of 1 week. Each time they claimed it was repaired and charged me. Each time I picked it up, the same problem occurred. The first visit cost me about $350. By the third time, they were quoting me $2800. Not having any faith in them (and after meeting the very young "technician"), I told them not to touch my car and I decided to bring it to Derrick -- based largely on the reviews here. What a great experience! Within a few days, the team worked out all the issues at a cost of about $450 (mind you, the dealership was $2800). The car performed perfectly. In addition, when picking up the car, we had to park another car there temporarily. We returned after the garage had closed (which we were aware about) to pick up our car. To our very unexpected and pleasant surprise, there was a note on the dashboard saying "we noticed the air in your left front tire was low so we fixed it". No charge. I can't recall when we received such service. We will be going back to Derrick for all our automobile needs in the future! Thanks Prospect Exxon!! read more

After having a negative experience at a "big chain" repair shop I took my Mustang over to Prospect Exxon and I could not be any happier with their work. Derrick and his crew are knowledgeable, professional and genuine "car guys." When I dropped off my car Derrick took time out to test drive the car with me and he even called me during each step of the repair to keep me up to speed with what was being done. Prospect mechanics repaired the clutch that the other shop had improperly installed and even had a new driveshaft custom machined for my car at a great price. Prices are reasonable and very competitive. Their work is great and they are the only mechanics that I trust with my car and my family member's cars. My father just had his SUV's exhaust manifold replaced by Prospect and he was very happy with the work. If you are looking for a great shop look no further! read more

Highly recommend this place! My parked car was hit on the street and resulted in my mirror dangling down with the wires exposed. The dealership was going to charge me $250 for parts and $150 for labor to repair. The guys here took a look at my car (without an appointment), and re-attached my mirror on the spot. I went here for an oil change last year. When I started searching for a mechanic to tune up my truck, this business popped up in the search. Great reviews and I realized I was here before. I decided to take my old truck there for an annoying noise the truck keeps making as well as an overall assessment. I told them I needed a noise to be checked out and they immediately drove the vehicle around to hear the noise for themselves and then placed it on the lift to look under the car. I thought they would assess the situation and tell me the amount then I would have told them I would like for all the parts to be checked, but it didn't happen this way. They welded two pieces together and the noise was GONE. I asked the price and I was told it was on the house. I tried to give a tip and they wouldn't accept it. I was so shocked that I forgot to mention that I wanted a diagnostic check but believe me when I say, I...WILL...BE...BACK. LOL read more

Needed car maintenance, found this place via yelp, and I wanted to pass on the good word. "Honest Mechanic" is almost an oxymoron nowadays, but Derrick really is as good as it gets. Dont let the gas station/auto shop appearance scare you. Fast, Honest, Competent, and Professional. Works on all types of cars and doesn't charge a dime more than he has to. Let me tell you! This shop gets as good as it gets when it comes to gas station shops. I knew Derrick for a very long time since High School, and he always been a good person. I've had my first car 96' Mustang GT that he seen me ride in for many years. Recently I made a idiotic mistake when I was changing the oil in my driveway, I dented the oil pan. Fast forward till now, he recommended me the towing company to get my car out the driveway, mind you it has a "Race-Type" suspension with lowered springs, and caster camber plates. The tow guy was even friendly he helped me get my car out the driveway with accuracy and delicacy. I gave him the parts, and he did my car in less than 2 days!!!! The Job takes many many man hours, and he got me on my way to being fixed. He even stored my baby in the garage just for safe measure! Overall, Derrick is car enthusiasts, and when you bring him yours, it will be in great care! This place is terrible. I brought my car in for maintenance and they did not fix the issue. I spent over 1k on this repair. I contacted them after the issue kept re-occuring and not only did they ask me to bring the car back but they charged me for "labor". I spoke to the owner today and he brushed me off and told me that he would rather deal with his "pleasant" customers than deal with a "rude and unsatisfied" customer. He stated he can no longer help me and that I should just take my car to the dealership. I would not recommend. Not sure if it was a racial thing but I wouldn't put it past them as they stated they went the "cheap" way to fix my vehicle. He wants to defend himself in the response but Derrick never stated he was the owner when I originally called as if he were scared to deal with a "fuming" customer. The issues I have WERE NOT FIXED as he clearly states in his response. That is the bottom line. Derrick told me to take my car to the dealership because after spending "$904.52" there was nothing he can do for me as his team was uncapable of figuring out what the issue was. Derrick only called me back once he saw this Yelp review posted. So please cut the tom foolery. What I have stated in this review is what was said to me this morning BEFORE i posted this review. This is probably one of the only honest auto shops in the area. Derrick the owner is very polite and does not "talk down" to you. He knows cars inside and out, charges very reasonable prices, and does not push unnecessary repairs. They do everything clean, professionally, and with great care. This is the worst place to get gas! The attendant was very rude, the price was $3.69 where all other Exxon stations in the area were $2.97! On top of that the attendant gave me $20 of gas when I asked for $40!! He didn't mention anything as I got ready this leave! So they are overpriced and stole money from me! read more

This team is very professional. Derrick is one of the few honest people in the car business. He always explains everything he is going to do to your car and his prices are very reasonable. I had a knocking brake noise in my Hyundai and he figured out the problem. He really takes time to carefully think through what could be wrong with the car. I had a bad battery connection and brought the car in with a new battery and they fixed the connection problem in 10 minutes. Like another poster said, they are not a huge place but it is pretty impressive what this small place can do in terms of auto repair. I just had the 60,000 mile maintenance (timing belt, etc) on a '04 Hyundai done there and the car feels great. He does not over-charge on the parts and is way less expensive than going to the dealer for these types of things. I think Derrick may be one of the few honest people in the auto repair business and am looking forward to bringing my new car to his team for service. read more

I've taken my car to the guys over at Prospect EXXON at least a half dozen times over the past year almost after being frustrated by my old regular mechanic that I had gone to for almost 15 years. After reading reviews on Yelp I decided to take my car there. Recently I had taken my car there to have them try to figure out what was causing my gauge cluster to shut down intermittently. I've taken that car to my old mechanic several times over the course of a one & a half years & spent over a Grand trying to get at the cause of it. After the guys at Prospect did some trouble shooting then a lil research they determined that because I had some much crap on my keychain it was causing the short to cluster. After several trips over a year & hundreds of dollars spent all it was in the end was too many keys, rewards cards, #1 DAD key chain, etc etc.. I haven't had that issue since then & I haven't seen my old mechanic since either. I can't recommend these guys enough. They are knowledgeable, courteous, there hours are convenient, the hourly rate is competitive & much cheaper than a dealer. read more

I came in here on a Saturday to install and balance the tires for my car. Within 5 minutes the car was in the shop and they were already working on it. The waiting area is clean and comfy with complimentary coffee. It is by far better than many of the body shops I've been to. The car was ready in less then an hour. I can't say enough about how happy I was to find a place with good, honest mechanics like Derrick and his crew. After being told by my Subaru dealer that my car was in need of $2600+ in repairs, I brought it to Prospect Exxon on faith after reading an article that it was one of the best places to get your car fixed in Essex County. I was not disappointed! Derrick fixed my car for under $100.00, and even spent extra time trying to fix the noise from the heat shields that are notorious on Subarus (I didn't even ask him to do this--he did it on his own for no extra charge). I have to say they have the best prices in town and i never have to wait more then 10 minutes to get my oil changed or a tune up. The owner, Derrick, is super friendly and has fixed things on my car that even Honda couldn't figure out. One thing i must point out is their prices on tires. They were as competitive as the prices i found online and put them on so quickly. Came in for an oil change was surprised at the price. I understand it was synthetic but almost a $100 for an oil change is ridiculous even for synthetic. Also was quoted almost 800 just to change brake pads. If you want to get ripped off you came to the right place. read more

It has been a while since I have been to this shop because I bought a new vehicle. Prospect Exxon is an amazing shop that serviced both my 02' Chrysler 300 & 04' Chevy Trailblazer. I never had an issue with them at all. In business the most important thing is customer service, Derrick always takes the time to discuss items wrong(or not wrong) with your car. I became a customer after Auto Ed closed (about a mile away from Prospect Exxon) The shop may not be the biggest but Derrick commonly will show you what is wrong. For example: I once had a cracked anti-freeze reservoir tank and drove to their shop around the time they were closing. Derrick lifted up my vehicle and spotted the issue immediately. As I was leaking anti-freeze heavily - Derrick had one of his employees drive me home(about 1.5 miles away). When my car steps off of warranty you will have another vehicle to work on. I will always recommend your shop to anyone looking for a shop in the west orange area. read more

I first took my Jeep Wrangler hear 4 years ago for an issue with the transmission and was blown away by the great service provided. All of the people that work there have been extremely friendly and informative and kept me in the loop about what was going on with my Jeep. Was in the market looking for a trustworthy place to take our cars, not sure this is the place. We tried this place because of the high reviews. I think we will keep looking. They seem knowledgeable and the car ended up fixed quickly, but it seems to me they took a luckily small issue and jacked the bill to the max. The car was towed in because all the trans fluid leaked out of the wife's car. The issue ended up being that a small trans cooler hose either tore or came off. Things that we didn't like so much: 1. Didn't call before doing the work. (not that we would have said no) 2. Decided on his own to add an oil change to the work. 3. Other customer that were only doing oil changes paid less for their oil changes than the one that was forced on us. (don't leave other customer's bills all over the desk) 4. We got a little extra EPA fee for our oil change also, why not...a little cherry on top.. 5. Paid for Genuine OEM trans fluid. If you're going to charge for OEM parts show customers the OEM box/bottle, or the customer will have doubts. It's hard for me to believe a shop stocks stuff from all different OEMs or was able to acquire it from a dealer on a Saturday. As a customer when it comes to transmissions, you're kind of happy it wasn't a bigger issue and that's why one lets these things slide at first, but the more you think about it, the more you feel a little hosed. read more
