Proper is in a fantastic location on west Magnolia, right in between Fixture and Spice. It's pretty easy to miss because it's so so tiny, but I definitely think it's worth a visit. Proper is 100% focused on fine craft cocktails, so come here after you eat because there's really no food on the menu besides nuts! You'll go hungry. But you can fix that by drinking more, of course. Proper can make all the classics and then they've got a whole slew of fancy house-made cocktails on the list. We recently visited and the bartender told us all about the specials, which included something I can't remember (I'm sorry but he talked so quickly) made with "fall spices" like cloves, nutmeg, and cinnamon. You can expect seasonal creations and decent prices. Most drinks are between $8-$10. On my latest visit I had a French 75 -- a little too sweet and a little too weak for my taste, but the presentation was lovely. Adam enjoyed his spin on a Manhattan, which was served with one of those single giant ice cubes (always fun). The ambiance is really cozy and casual. Again this is a small establishment and there are maybe 6 little tables inside plus the actual bar, which is also little. There's a patio outside which I've yet to experience. Proper serves up craft cocktails *proper*! Cross the threshold and you feel as though you've stepped back in time.The space is dark, slightly divey (but not off-putting at all) and intimate. Absolutely best enjoyed when people are in small groups. I say this because a large birthday group came in and really destroyed the cool vibe that was going on because they got the bartender to turn on some loud tunage and then engaged in a spontaneous grind fest. Thoroughly despicable, but I'm not blaming Proper for this unfortunate display. This makes me think that they're missing out on one of the things I often appreciate most in a Speakeasy (other than expertly crafted cocktails): RULES! Ie: no congregating in large groups, no standing, no soliciting unaccompanied women, etc. I mean, the name implies that good manners might be appreciated here, right? I know, I know. I'm a Scrooge, but rules can be kinda awesome. Sorry to write so much about the group that ruined the vibe. You'll see that I didn't detract stars for this because I don't think that's fair. We were immediately tended to by an *extremely* nice bartender who invited us to sit at a table where he'd take our order. That's pretty rare, in my experience. Sometimes if you sit at a table without going to a bar in joints like this, they'll ignore you because OBVIOUSLY you'll get the hint that you order at the bar because bartenders are not waiters. Wow I am definitely a fan of this little place! I love a good fancy cocktail and this place has plenty of options as far as that goes! I also love infused liquors and talented mixologists! The bar is small but cozy. You can actually hear the conversation happening at your table. They also have a small patio out back. I started out with the Dixie Bliss cocktail because it had blueberry in it so I was intrigued. It also had champagne which was crisp and refreshing. I tasted the bloody mary with pickle infused vodka and it was delicious! My next drink I tried was the Maui Mule. I was actually going to order the bloody mary, but when at the bar I noticed the pineapple hibiscus tea infused vodka and asked the bartender what drinks he makes with it. The Maui Mule was one of a few he mentioned and I went for it. It was awesome too! There are plenty of other drinks on the menu to try here and I can't wait to come back and share this place with more friends. I randomly came here on a Wednesday night since I heard so much about the cocktails here. I'm not big on cocktails since I find them to be too sweet. When I told the bartender what I liked, she was able to make it for me. It was delicious! I came back again 2 days later since I was craving a cheeseboard and saw that they had one on the menu. I called in to place a to go order and take it over to my friends place who lives right next door at Mag and May. Everyone was super friendly. I finally got to my friends place and when we opened the box, there was only 1 small piece of Brie cheese even though the description mentioned it would have several cheeses. I was so bummed since I don't eat meat so I didn't get my cheese fix with the wine I had bought. I guess next time if I go back, I should just eat the food there so there aren't any mistakes with my to go order. The girl and I came by after having a bite to eat next door. Honestly I've driven by dozens of times and never realized this place even existed due to their square footage. Proper is easy to miss as it is a shotgun style bar wedged between two restaurants. They've got a real little patio out back with seating for about 10-12 on some unique handmade patio furniture. New ideas for my own place have arisen from my visit. Now I'm one for the craft cocktails and will always give a spot a chance if they make them. In fact I unfortunately might have a problem for them because I have to have cool drinks. I love the classic cocktails of my grandparents and parents generation. Where people drank real drinks and not pounding shots or vodka redbulls while some stupid club music pounds the little life I have left out of my eardrums. Proper didn't let down with any of that. They also infuse their own liquor, they muddle fresh ingredients, the bartenders are knowledgeable in helping you choose, and they bring their A game to give you a truly well made, neigh hand crafted, drink. I've become a bit of an addict for Old Fashioned's, thanks Don Draper (Jon Hamm), and Mason (the bartender) hooked me up with a great version. This is definitely my favorite cocktail bar, in the area. We come here a 1-2 times a month they can be pricey but it's worth it, if you want quality. My wife seems to think that the drinks are quite strong, but that's another reason I love it! I would recommend they get some other fruity drinks on the menu for individuals like my wife. Strolled in here the other night after a dinner date. The bar was pretty petite and dimly lit. We sat at the bar and the bartender showed us the happy hour menu. Select cocktails were $5 so that was exciting. I ordered this gin based cocktail called "the fix" . The "fix" cocktail was not my favorite by any means, it was pretty tart/sweet so I had to ask for some club soda to tame the sweet flavor. The atmosphere was pretty hipster-esque with a dark undertone, not so cosy or intimate like a few others I've been to. I believe there is an outside section if I am not mistaken so I would like to come back and try another cocktail as well as sit outdoors next time. We stopped by Proper after a great dinner at Spice and after walking in, we knew we would like the place. It is just a small, narrow neighborhood bar that you do not see too often anymore. All the staff were nice and courteous and recommended a few drinks for us. They have some cool concoctions (too many to sanely try in one outing) so I will have to trade off between Proper and The Usual for the mixed drink fix. As I mentioned in my Spice review, it is nice to find cool places off the Magnolia Strip as things can get pretty busy there during peak hours. If you're looking for a laid back spot with nice drinks, definitely try Proper out. read more

I hate giving this review because this is my go to happy-hour-read-alone spot. Also, I live in this neighborhood and don't want to deter anyone from patronizing businesses down here.... but the unwanted, we don't care about your business vibe in this bar is just too much. In my experience everyone (beside one female bartender (not the owner)) behind the bar go out of their way to make you feel like you are putting them out, no matter the time of day or how busy. Week after week I continue to show up and week after week I'm made to feel like I'm unwanted... even when I'm the only person in the bar. I've read a lot of the negative reviews and Propers response to these seem to be the newly added TWO pages of "rules" you must follow or take a hike... rules such as public displays of affection are subject to ridicule by the bartenders. Then the obvious, service is going to be slow, deal with it rule. Slow service I can handle, but a staff that act like you're a nuisance, I can't. The negative energy is almost unbearable and I'll continue to recommend this bar because maybe I'm alone in my feelings. The Proper is a tiny bar in Magnolia. They have a ton of drinks and the staff is super nice, which is very important to me because that is one of the reasons why I think twice before going to The Usual. They have secret parking in the back and a very nice patio. Their prices are about the same as everywhere else, $9-$12 per drink. They have fun creative cocktails and there are tasty. The crowd when I went was 45+ and the music was appropriate for that crowd. I am not sure if I will be back, because was not my crowd, but I definitely recommend it to people 45 and up. read more

The staff is very helpful and can often create you something delicious and perfect to your palette so come ready to explain what you do or do not like. DO NOT come here and get just any old drink, try something new because this is truly one of those places where you and you alone can determine how unique your experience is. The reason for this is the great deal they have on Margaritas every Tuesday, that deal being that they are only $4 the entire day, and let me tell you I will be back on numerous occasions for this deal. However, I will not only be revisiting them for this deal. I will definitely be going back on any other day of the week. Why? The atmosphere at Proper takes the cake for great places to get a fancy cocktail when you are feeling fancy. It isn't a super dressy bar or super fancy by any means but the décor and speakeasy vibe makes me want to dress up and transport back to the 20s. We came here on a Tuesday around 5:30 and there was no one else in the bar. It was pretty quiet but by 6:00 a bunch of people had made there way in for happy hour. Tuesday is $1 off all cocktails, beer, and wine. Pretty good deal. It is a small bar so limited seating doesn't make it the best for a large group. The outside seating is better suited for that and it's dog friendly! I had the French 75. A perfect mix of champagne and gin served with the perfectly done orange slice. I am not a big liquor drinker and tend to stick to beer and wine but this was a perfect cocktail for me. Not too sweet, just enough carbonation, and lovely mix of flavors. This place is so comfortable. You can tell by the amount of locals and regulars inside. I went in after a long day and was greeted warmly at the bar. Thwy have a great staple cocktail menu with some adventurous options and good happy hour deals. What really sets this place apart is the bartenders. They knew a lot about cocktails and liquors and making drinks and would create something for you if you were willing to be a bit adventurous. They made a rum old fashioned for me that was spot on. Their prices are also affordable for a cocktail bar. While they don't serve food, they are totally cool with you bringing in food. We were here on a Saturday night around 11:00 PM. It was crowded, but there was one perfect little table for us. We sat down in the glow of the table top lamp and poured ourselves some water from the glass water containers they had on each table. The music was wonderful. A mix of Bublé and Coldplay on repeat for the night. It went so well with the storm that was blowing around outside. We placed our first drink orders and unfortunately had to wait about 20 minutes before we received them. The place is small, and it wasn't extremely crowded. Everyone had a table. I'm not sure why it took that long. So by the time I received my first drink, I went ahead and put my order in for my second drink. By the time I was ready for my second drink, it still wasn't there. I went to the bar and asked about it, and they apologized and immediately made it for me. Maybe someone forgot about my order? The drinks were made wonderfully. I had a French 75 and a Pandan Swizzle. The French 75 was sweet and fizzy, and the pandan swizzle was earthy, nutty, and sweet- it reminds me a lot of Taro! I would highly recommend these choices. The atmosphere is so lovely and low key. The drinks are wonderfully crafted. The only problem was the long wait for drinks. Would love another rainy night here. It was like a dream! read more

I've never been treated quite so rudely anywhere. First, after everything we tried in Fort Worth was closed (Monday) we called to verify that they were open since it was a holiday and Yelp suggested we do so -- after how rude the girl who answered the phone was, we should've not come. But, we were desperate. So our party of 5 naively walks in at 3PM on a Monday and are literally the only people. We have a sleeping baby in a car seat. The rude phone girl looks at us like we are the scourge of the earth and tells us they are not responsible if something happens to our baby when it gets crazy later and that it is not a family friendly establishment. She acted like we were bringing our baby into a raucous club. We are just some friends from all over the country looking for a place to catch up in a town where everything is closed and it is way too cold outside to walk! We look around at the COMPLETELY empty bar (again, at 3PM on a Monday) and joke that we won't give our sleeping baby too many shots. She didn't say a word when we ordered, paid, or picked up our drinks -- just glared. Even though we were the only people in the bar she was firmly ensconced behind the bar and would not come out to even bring us our drinks. 2nd time I've been here. First time the service wasn't great but not terrible. Not referring to the time it takes make a drink, but the time it takes for them to acknowledge a customer in a fairly empty bar. 4 bartenders, small crowd. No one comes to wait on you if your not sitting at the bar. They also do not bring you your drinks. So get up from your table, go to the bar to order, wait for your hand craft cocktail to be muddled, then go sit down. A waiter literally just came by (after we got our drinks ourselves) and grabbed the menu we had moved off our table (since they are very small tables) and sit it back in front of my friend on top of his phone and drink. If I could this place negative reviews I would. This is not due to the fact that I did not like the drinks or venue itself, it is sadly due to the owner herself. I could not believe how incredibly rude this woman was. She completely mistreated my cousins and I. We were chatting and catching up and decided to choose some music from the self pay jukebox, but apparently she did not like the music we chose. She then proceeded to essentially try to kick us out by slowly removing all of our glasses off the table and bringing us our checks before we were even finished. I love small bars with character so I was really excited to try this swanky place on Magnolia Ave. There's a seasonal pop-up Santa bar and decorations to match but unfortunately the staff wasn't so festive. I came in with a date when there were maybe 4 or 5 people (mind you this place is pretty homely, the max is probably 30) and was ignored by the 3 bartenders and what seemed to be the owner. After grabbing their attention I was disappointed by the drinks which sounded extravagantly imagined but lackluster in taste. It took another 20 minutes to close my tab even though we were sitting right at the bar, the people around us seemed to be more important or needy. To top it off, they didn't have Fireball which should be a crime in this state. Overall, disappointing. 10/10 would not recommend. read more

Met friends for drinks before dinner on a Saturday around 4:30. I like the interior quite a bit (there's something about long narrow spaces that makes me happy). When we arrived only a few other people were inside, but service was slow. I'd like to believe the bartender was having a (really) bad day, because she didn't seem interested in serving us and had zero personality. She had difficulty answering our questions about the menu and then when we ordered she didn't even respond. She just turned around, came back a little later with our drinks, set them down and walked away. Still no words. Weirdness. It was like being served by the undead. I ordered the French 75 - one of my favorite classic cocktails - and it was solid. I guess zombies make good drinks. The guys all ordered beer. Limited selection, but a bit different than what we've seen elsewhere. Is that good or bad? You'll need to decide for yourself since I don't drink much beer and am going off what my husband said. A crown and coke was ordered by one of our friends and she said "where's the coke?". So they're making strong mixed drinks, a good thing in my opinion. The people we met up with have been to Proper a few times and always enjoyed it. Spice is next door and apparently you can order from them. Knowing that bumped this review from 3 to 4 stars. Overall? Ok, it's a nice place, small but nice. It wasn't packed when we were there, so it was pretty quiet as well, which was nice, however, it jumped the track on us. Sat down at a table, three people working, man, woman, younger guy. The young guy comes over to the table with the "cocktail menu" which I've seen these before y'know. I order an old fashioned off of it, my date orders a white russian. "I'm sorry, what's a white russian?" Ok, hasn't everyone seen the Big Lebowski at one time or another? White Russians aren't some eclectic cocktail no one ever asks for, I know, back in the old days I tended bar off and on. I explain it, then again, then when he comes back from the bar to tell us he doesn't have Kahlua brand vodka (holy crap dood), we tell him that's the coffee liquor you put in it, any vodka is fine. Third time explaining "it's vodka, kahlua, and half/half". Swears he's got it. At this point we're wondering why he isn't asking one of the other two people there, who we'd been told was his mom and stepfather...appears to be just a small breakdown in communication there to me. He makes one more trip back and says they only have Kamora, no big deal, that's fine. Off he goes. Comes back with our drink. While my Old Fashioned is a little red maybe, it's honestly pretty good, good pour, and tasted good, me happy. The white russian however, looked like it was pretty well vodka and half/half and tasted like there might have been a splash of Kamora. It was strong, which would have been okay if it tasted right, but even with them putting more half/half in, it was deemed undrinkable by my date, and I couldn't blame her. It tasted kinda bitter the way it came out. We decided to move on, I finished my drink, and I went up to pay the bill. The woman noticed the other drink was hardly touched and asked me if she didn't like it. I only said (yea, I'm pretty well a chicken when I'm trying to be nice) that it was too strong for her, (not a complete fib), and I wasn't charged for it. That little bit right there shows that they are concerned enough to try and make things right, and it was done unasked for. I didn't say it was a bad drink, only too strong, and nowadays I believe most places wouldn't have even asked, much less knocked it off the bill. Very good, I appreciated that a lot. I believe The Proper has been open for a little over a month. I like that it's small, and wasn't crowded when we were there. It's a nice looking bar. What it appears they need is some education, and learn to make some drinks, NOT just the ones you promote on your bar menu. Honestly, I can't remember ever going into a bar where they didn't know what a white russian was. I can cut a little slack. It's new, and I like it. It's location isn't that great for me, it's a ways from where I roam, so while I don't see myself going back often, I won't hesitate if I'm out myself, but I ain't never takin' a date there again. I don't want to discourage anyone from making a visit here....I'm just sayin'. They treated me right and that goes a long way to correct shortcomings.
