    Teriyaki chicken & avocado salad
    Judy F.

I felt ripped-off and still hungry. First time purchase at Proper Food. $14 teriyaki chicken & avocado salad. Sounded tasty even though I didn't want a cold salad. Teriyaki chicken would have tasted better if warm. Avocado obviously was a little brown/black cuz it's sliced and fanned-out. Box included orange sesame dressing (should've included salt packet for avo). It was 85% spinach leaves. I counted 4 chunks of chicken, 2 small cut eat of butternut squash, and 1/4 of an avocado. This should be named Salad w/ chicken and avocado. Shop is open for breakfast and sells breakfast items. Which makes it an option to handle overflow from other coffee shops on the same block.

This afternoon, I wanted to try something new for lunch in Lower Manhattan  -  Proper Food at 67 Wall Street was selected as a first time food experience. The basmati rice with saffron  /  lentils looked and tasted surprisingly good especially when eaten with a piece of tuna.  Although this was a "salad,"  this food experience was treated as a seafood entrée.  There was a slight acidic taste with the tuna because of the lemon, which did not detract from its seafood nuances.  Slicing each tomato wedge eaten with basmati rice and tuna gave a sweet delicate taste profile. Unfortunately, the kale bites were dry, brittle, and hard requiring blanching to soften its texture for consumption as a "salad" component.  The kale when eaten with basmati rice, tomato wedge, and tuna was unpleasant to say the least having no taste. Ending on a positive note, the chocolate cookie was soft, moist, and "chocolaty" all the way through.  Be mindful of the sea salt sprinkled on the cookie's top that requires someone with a "special palate."  The sea salt was jarring as an unwelcome surprise after tasting the sweet chocolate morsels. Overall, I have tasted better.  Just a thought, basmati saffron rice with tuna by itself would be fabulous and a better food option!

I stopped by the newly opened New York outpost of San Francisco's Proper Food, hidden away by La Columbe, sweet green, and the other lunch spots catering to the office crowds in the area. Proper Foods seems to be targeting the Pret a Manger market, offering pre-made meals ranging from breakfast burritos, to salads, to cold sandwiches, to entrees that are heated at the location before you take them to go. The location itself is obviously designed to cater to the to-go customers, with little to no room for dining in (skinny, bar-style seating on the left of the store), and all the meals in the refrigeration displays on the right side of the store. I have tried two meals from Proper Foods; the Carne Asada, Rice & Beans bowl, which came highly recommended from the cashier, and the Seared Lemon Pepper Tuna Salad. The cashier offered to heat the Carne Asada bowl before I left, but given that I live just around the corner, I figured my own microwave would suffice (approximately 1 minute on high). The meat was fresh and tender, and the salsa and guacamole added nice fresh touches of flavor to the beans and rice, which served as the component to fill you up. While it's not meant to be the fanciest meal, it certainly tasted great, offered simple home preparation, and was filling for a fairly reasonable price (approx $14). I tried the seared lemon pepper tuna salad on my second visit, as they did not have the Carne Asada bowl at the time of my return trip. I suppose this is a potential pitfall for an establishment that offers fresh entrees made daily from local suppliers. However, it does lead to disappointed customers who might've traveled to the store for a particular meal, as I did, only to be forced to choose another option. Regardless, the tuna was cooked properly, and the lemon accented Basmati rice and lentils provided a filling counter point to the kale salad. The included dressing was tart and flavorful, lifting the cold salad up to another level of flavor. While it was good, Carne Asada bowl is still my favorite. I'll be excited to try their breakfast options, as the breakfast sandwich and breakfast burrito both appear to have potential to be yummy breakfast options. Based on what I've seen, Proper Foods could easily become a contender with Pret depending on how it distinguishes itself (the hot entree offerings are a good start). They also offer an app, which I have yet to try, and may speed up the pick up process if the location gets especially busy at lunch.

    Chicken & bacon sandwich

I ordered the chicken & bacon sandwich. It was chicken slices, bacon, cheese in between two slices of white bread. This is a combination that could never go wrong. It tasted delicious and was filling too. Good choice to go when you are hungry and on a budget.

Stopped in to grab some tortilla soup and Ra and Terry were the sweetest people. Would go back in just to see them both.

Today, I got a PISILLO panini with ciabatta bread and it was so damn big! I had half of it for lunch and the other half will be saved for my dinner! This panini was just too long and big. I had to open my mouth really wide to take bites out of the big panini and it was annoying. It tasted good though! I love the balsamic dressing, arugula, tomatoes, and bufula mozz cheese the most out of the whole sandwich! The dressing made it really good and soften the ciabatta bread for easier chewing. My poor mouth and teeth! The whole panini cost $22.21 including tax in cash. There was an atm machine by the entrance in case you don't have cash. The whole place was very cozy and tight knit chairs and tables on both sides of the restaurant. The staff was very fast and I got my panini in not time. I did not have to wait that long. I was just amazed at the size of the ciabatta bread. They had many different types of bread that I can try next time like the focaccia, sfilatino, and semolina bread that looked really good behind the display glass. They got 35 different types of panini sandwiches for you to choose from. Most of them contain meat and there are some vegetarian options that are not so pricey. I will try those next time!

((4.5 stars)) Sunny…read moreand Annie's is very much a 24/7 neighborhood gem of a corner store and deli. it's packed with packaged foods--candy, chips, cookies, ice cream, soft drinks, beer, and a lot more plus the deli counter serves ups an endless list of creative sandwiches. i am not going to say this place is cramped but it kinda is. for example, if people stand in the wrong areas of the store, it will cause a complete standstill of a traffic jam in the store. my advice: order from the deli (and stand somewhere people aren't trying to get to) or grab whatever you need, pay, and leave. this place is not a place to linger. keep it moving. anyway, the obvious draw of Sunny & Annie's is the endless list of sandwiches that are handwritten cards that are stuck outside glass of the deli counter. there is literally something for the pickiest eaters--from hot sandwiches, cold sandwiches, wraps, and more. some sandwiches are named celebrities, politicians, etc. i have ordered a bunch of different sandwiches and have not made it through much of the menu. you can also create your own Frankenstein monster of a sandwich. while the sandwiches are a big part of the draw, the insane amount of snack foods crammed into the store is quite remarkable from the large stand of Doritos, Takis, Cheetos and other popular branded snack foods in the front to the separate stand of Wise snacks to an entire back corner of the store filled with all kinds of chips, popcorn, etc. imo, Sunny's has the freshest-tasting Smartfood Cheddar Popcorn. i know an insane take consider it's a packaged popcorn snack from a megacorp (PepsiCo), but i'll die on this hill. maybe it's cause Sunny's sells a lot of Smartfood popcorn so it gets refreshed often, maybe they have a secret in/pipelinbe from the factory, or it's just magic/alchemy. i don't know, but the Smartfood Cheddar Popcorn never tastes stale-ish like it does at grocery stores, the bags never feel deflated because they have been on shelf long, and the popcorn never has that soft mouthy feel but still has the crunch to it. maybe it's just me, but Sunny's serves a great list of sandwiches...AND the freshest Smartfood Cheddar Popcorn. beyond the snacks, the service from the deli to cashier is upbeat and friendly. in all seriousness, Sunny and Annie's is an Avenue B institution at this point and remains a charming family-owned store--and is NOT a sterile modern clone of a neighborhood business.
