Best Dining Experience to Date in NC! Found this fabulous establishment and experience on Yelp (thank you) after a long day of touristing around Boone, NC. Was looking for a comfort meal as it was a cool November evening and we had walked all day. We almost passed it by using our GPS and were lucky to find a spot to park on the side of what turned out to be an old house that was once a jail and a bank way back when. There is limited seating but we did walk right in as it was a Thursday and the tourist season was waning down. Fortunately, because it was nearing the Thanksgiving holiday, one menu special was a turkey dinner with sides. My husband I both ordered it and were so pleased. The food was very delicious. The tossed dinner salad included as a side choice to our meal had probably 10+ all-fresh ingredients. It could be a meal on it's own. The turkey was juicy, tender and flavorful. It was accompanied by whipped sweet potatoes and fresh cranberry compote. All served with homemade cornbread that was incredible. What an amazing experience. The interior is intimate, cozy and the service was impeccable. This truly was such an enjoyable experience. We are from the Chicago area which is know for many great restaurants and this restaurant just blew us away. The prices were very reasonable and the portions were very generous. We left there not being able to eat dessert but we're so impressed with the meal we ordered the homemade bread pudding to go which was packaged with sides of whipped cream to enjoy at our Airbnb. We have traveled the last 4 years through the mountain towns of NC and to date we have not had a meal and experience as good as this one. One of the best restaurants in Boone! I ate here many times during my time as a college student and recently returned for a birthday dinner. The food is phenomenal! Taking the strong, favorable recommendations of others, we selected Proper for our lunch in Boone , traveling on to The Carter Fold. We arrived just after they opened at 11:30, were seated immediately and told the specials. I chose the buttermilk fried chicken, Mac and cheese, green beans and cornbread. I've never had fried chicken so crisp with no greasy touch at all. The beans were perfectly seasoned and the Mac and cheese very creamy. Corn muffin was tasty and coffee hot. My husband chose meatloaf, mashed potatoes, green beans and corn muffin. He was equally satisfied. The seats are close but the surroundings very appealing. The ladies room was well appointed. Waitstaff were excellent. Friendly and informative. Definitely lived up to its billing. Only down side is very limited parking but we got a spot luckily since it was a chilly wet day. Incredible dining experience. This quaint Southern restaurant is tucked into a landscaped nook behind Boone's Main Street. We were met right away my a warm and friendly hostess. She made special accommodations for our party of 5 in a quiet corner of the brick walled dining room - opposite from the fireplace. The waiter was very knowledgeable of all the dishes, and how they are cooked. He was enthusiastic and helpful as well. The food selection was mostly comfort Southern, including vegetarian choices as well. We were all delighted by our appetizers and main courses. Tea and water are served in mason jars for an added touch of down home cooking. the fried chicken was tasty, but not the traditional chicken (legs, breasts, thighs, etc) that I'm used to. The green beans were overcooked and generally flavorless. The cornbread was acceptable. One of the specialties is the homemade ketchup which had good flavor and a subtle kick. Add that to the homemade hushpuppies for a tasty treat. The best entree was the meatloaf, and not just because it was served with the ketchup. The restaurant is known for it's desserts, but we were too full to have any. Next time, I'm getting the Mexican chocolate chip cookie. read more

We came because my husband loves chicken livers, which was on their Wednesday night dinner specials menu. But, it has been discontinued. So he tried to order the catfish, but they didn't have that either! He ended up with their meatloaf with homemade ketchup, succotash, and mashed potatoes. I had the pulled pork, with the same sides. My second visit to this downtown, historic venue I awarded 5 stars for last year's meal did not let me down today! This time I was overwhelmed with a spectacular southern-style Hot Dip Chicken Waffle with maple, bacon, and a great, not too hot, spicy sauce. The chicken was obviously fresh, juicy and tender. The thick waffle as the bottom layer for the chicken was freshly made and the presentation was very appealing. Couple with cole slaw as a side and you have a feast. My guest chose the "Tomato and Cheese Pie" and was also pleased. The "cukes and onions" as a side were fresh tasting and nicely marinated. I couldn't resist borrowing a few for my review. My coleslaw was perfect too. Deserts are wonderful here, so don't leave without a shared portion, at least. Service is excellent and the historic home gives the southern vibe. Great find on a romantic weekend trip to Boone from Charlotte; I was surprised that Labor Day had no wait for dinner, although was happy to get one of the high tops looking outside to enjoy our relaxing, yet filling, meal. Tucked away on the far end of downtown, we enjoyed a walk after out meal and appreciated the more intimate experience in this old house. The food was spot on and allowed us to mix both hearty smoked brisket and more delicate tomato pie, both specials for the evening. I think this place finally helped me gain an appreciation for collard greens and the pickled red beets were wonderful. The fried chicken had also caught our attention, so our waiter generously allowed us to order it as one of our sides, along with some mac 'n cheese. Yes please! I enjoyed one of the local beers, Booneshine pale ale, out of a tallboy can and poured into a proper tulip glass. Service was friendly and this place definitely fit the bill for a true-to-Boone independently-owned establishment. Visiting North Carolina for the weekend, specifically Fleetwood/Boone area, and you already know I was checking yelp for our food stops. Proper kept popping up and I was getting really excited looking at the dishes they offered, specially the fried chicken. It is a very cute, little restaurant in the city of Boone. We were a party of 6 so it looked like it could've been a little tight, but they made it work. The lady helping us was so friendly! She answered all are questions and let us know that everything is made in house. I went with the fried chicken, Mac and cheese and the slaw. The experience I had was misaligned with Proper's rating. At the time I'm posting this Proper's yelp rating is 4.5 stars, that's why I picked them (and the cuisine style). I got a potato cake appetizer that was alright, and a specialty burger recommended by the server that was very bland. Similarly the mac'n'cheese side for the burger was bland. I didn't finish the meal just because it was boring. My friend had the chicken salad and said it was just a typical chicken salad with the chicken being dry. He says he'd give it a 2.5/5. The service was also mediocre. The best part of the meal was a coulple Ful Steam lagers. Maybe Proper's better for brunch, idk, but here the total meal wasn't worth $70. We would have been much more satisfied with 5 Guys. The experience wasn't bad, just underwhelming. read more

We stumbled upon Proper by pure luck and I am so glad we did. I couldn't think of a better place to have ended my dad's birthday. First off, before I even get to the delicious food we had I NEED to take a moment to talk about the amazing service we received. Our waitress Chrissy was the sweetest, friendliest, and kindest person. She made our experience at Proper unforgettable. With her friendly conversation and interest in our stay at Boone we felt so welcomed. Her daughter was also really sweet. Now on to the food. O M G. I can't even. Lol the fried chicken was so delicious. Everything is homemade, even the ketchup and Mayo! We all had fried chicken with different sides and I can tell you they are all amazing. The Mac n cheese was my favorite though! Do yourself a favor and get their sweet tea! Oh and also the peach cobbler was a dream! I can not say enough good things about this place and their service. Proper was highly recommended by a friend. The outside dining area looked great. It was cold, so we sat inside. I have to tell you, the food was great. I had pulled pork, cabbage and greens. Great local beer selection, too. The only issue we had was that my friends chair fell through a hole in the floor, and she fell out of her chair. A manager type person came out and said, "Well, they won't let me replace the original wood floor" and he walked away. Didn't ask if my friend was ok or anything. Then when I went to pay my 32.00 bill, I was charged 103.00. So, when I went to correct that, the waiter just said to the hostess, "stop distracting me." So, that whole exchange was bizarre. Very, very good. If you are looking for an amazing Southern meal in Boone this is a great option. I had a roasted turkey sandwich for lunch and it was wonderful. The Granny Smith apples on the turkey sandwich gave it the perfect taste. Note that this is not the most healthy food, but it is delicious. There is not an abundance of parking around the side of the building so I would imagine parking can be an issue during the busier seasons and the busier times of the day. read more

I am not the person to leave a review but I have been trying to order food from this restaurant for the past month, but they keep rejecting my to go order. I'm very disappointed, I have worked in multiple small restaurants in the area that get very busy and we have always found a way to be able to serve both guests that chose to dine in and out of the restaurant. This is lazy management, I am okay with a longer ticket time. Fix the issue with your kitchen Proper. There used to be more seats in that restaurant and y'all would be able to serve the guests dining in and out without a problem. read more
