Come Back Shack is a fast food restaurant. But it is different than what you think of fast food. The original Boone location has a drive-thru and both indoor and outdoor seating. My burger was delicious and above and beyond any fast-food burger I have had before, at comparable prices. They serve grass-fed beef, chuck, round and sirloin. It is fresh, not frozen, and the meats are without hormones. My portion of fries was large, and I couldn't finish them. A smaller portion option would have been nice. I found the setup here confusing, as I wasn't sure where to enter from the parking lot, and then I wasn't sure where to order. Ordering is done at the kiosk or via a QR code. So expect a wait for the kiosk. I use kiosks and apps often, but this particular system was not smooth. I found the kiosk not as easy to use as it should have been; after I selected what I wanted, there was no way to get to the next screen to check out. I went with the build-your-own and was also disappointed that tomatoes weren't an option to add to the burger, but maybe they were out. They are a cashless business. When your order is ready, it is placed on a front cart, while drinks and sauces are self-serve. If I return, I will likely stick to the drive-thru, as that seems to be a much smoother ordering experience. Food is always hot and fresh. Chicken does not have any antibiotics or hormones and they have local ground beef as an option for one of their burgers. Staff are always friendly and helpful. Ambiance is casual and low key. A lot of App State college students come here to eat! And it's family friendly but always busy no matter what time I've been here. I like how you can order from your phone with a QR menu or in the restaurant from a kiosk so if you have a hard time deciding on what you want - you aren't rushed like you would be if you ordered at the counter. My fiancé got the Comeback Shack Slider and the Steakhouse Burger Slider and he really enjoyed them and said they were very good! I got the chicken tenders and they were hot and fresh. I've heard about Come Back Shack for years. I finally got my butt up to Boone to try it and it was fantastic! As newbies we were a little confused how to order at first. Did we miss the giant sign above the counter explaining it? Yes we did! Luckily, a sweet employee saw our confusion and brought us menus and took our order. We'll know next time to just order at the kiosk. I got the Original Shack Burger, my husband got the Cheeseburger and my FIL got the Local burger. We shared the loaded Comeback fries. Husband got the limeade, I got lemonade, and FIL got Strawberry Lemonade. We all loved everything so much. You can really taste the freshness of the burgers here. My burger was so juicy! My first time here and it was a little strange but in a good way there is no counter to order from, you can place your order online using the app, or use the in store kiosk or scan the QR Code at your table place your order and pay then they will alert you when the food is ready to pick up at the counter or a member of their friendly staff will stop by get you name and bring your food to your table - it all works surprisingly good. The food here was outstanding although I thought the portions were on the smaller side for the price, the old adage "quality and quantity doesn't come in the same package" applies here in my opinion but I'd definitely return when I'm back in the area. The fries were outstanding and fresh cut to order and the chicken tenders were some of the best take-out or dine in I've experienced in a very long time. When our student started at App, a co-worker who had graduated from App and knew I liked burgers told me I NEEDED to go to Come Back Shack. We went the next time we were in Boone and have been doing as the name suggests and COMING BACK ever since. They have a unique ordering process where you fill out a paper with your order, customizing your made-to-order burger. Food is always hot, fresh and delicious. Come Back Sauce is a must. I like their loaded fries, sweet potato fries, and shakes. During Covid they remained open, drive thru only. Lines can get long but their drive thru efficiency rivals Chick-fil-A. Drive around the building to access the drive thru line. You will place your order on the side of the building with an employee. When you get to the window you will pay and receive your order. This may have changed but last time I checked you needed to place an order online if you wanted to pick up inside. Employees are always friendly and pleasant. Don't let the exterior, which looks more or less like a run-of-the-mill, drive-thru fast food place, fool you! Come Back Shack consistently serves up some of the best burgers and chicken sandwiches that Boone has to offer. We recently popped in on weekday evening for a quick dinner (for what must be out 10,000th visit since we moved here 8 years ago) and once again had a great experience. The actual inside of the restaurant is fairly small. Maybe 6-10 booths and a similar number of tables. But they also have ample seating off the back in a covered patio area and another outdoor seating area with picnic tables. All ordering is done via mobile device or at one of the kiosks. While there are staff around, you will either scan a QR code at your table to order with your device or walk up to the kiosk and punch in your order there. When it's ready, you'll receive a text to pick up your order on a shelf inside the restaurant. Pros: 1.) Food. Everything we've ever ordered has been hot, fresh, and delicious. The menu is primarily burgers and chicken sandwiches, but they also have excellent salads if you're looking for something a bit lighter. For desert, their milkshakes are another great option! 2.) Outdoor seating. Ample covered and uncovered outdoor seating make this a great option for enjoying good food on a nice Boone spring, summer, or fall afternoon. In the winter, the covered patio has plastic walls put down and is heated for additional seating options. 3.) Efficiency. Once you understand the mobile ordering system, it can be quite efficient. We sometimes start our order as we're headed to the restaurant so that it's ready shortly after we arrive. Cons: 1.) Small indoor space. This is minor, but the layout of the inside space is a bit cramped. Couple that with folks who may be having trouble with mobile ordering and the drink and sauce stations, it can get crowded quickly inside. For this reason, we tend to prefer the patio or picnic tables. 2.) Mobile ordering. While we love the mobile option, we've seen some folks get quite frustrated with it, especially if they weren't expecting it or aren't particularly tech-friendly. Pro tip - if you ask any of the staff, they'll happily help you punch the order in on one of the kiosks. It's a great place we find ourselves coming back to again and again. read more

Personally I think that the local burger is the best, but most burgers are good. Add cheese to your burgers, many don't include any as a base. I highly suggest getting fries come back style, they are my favorite. They often have fun seasonal items, though I generally don't order any sweets. They had a bang bang style fry I still think about.... You can find better chicken tenders elsewhere, sorry to say. They are still just as busy as I remember them being, both parking lots full and drive thru wrapped around. However, we still got our food fairly fast. One thing that was new since the last time we went, is that they do not offer counter service anymore! You have to order on the kiosk or on your phone. Which means they do not accept cash inside! But on that same vein, I'm gluten free. And it really annoyed me when I was charged .25 no matter what I did for a bunless option. If I got a bun no charge. But for them to just put it in a BOWL it was an up charge. For it to be lettuce wrapped? Upcharge. Seriously? It's already hard enough to eat out with food restrictions and then places charge extra for doing nothing extra. Let me repeat it, I was CHARGED MORE for NOT having a bun. For them to literally dump a burger patty and the toppings in a box they charged 25 cents EXTRA. Just mind boggling and extremely annoying.
