Other than a couple-minute orientation the first time you attend, there is no individual attention in the Pilates classes. I went in with a decent fitness level and zero Pilates experience, but in hindsight it would've been good to look up some mat Pilates basics on Youtube before my first class. Everyone one staff is super nice. Attendees mostly keep to themselves. You probably won't make a new gym bestie. But for people who want no nonsense, it's great.

I love the excercises and they are so inclusive, no matter your strength level. The real 6 stars for me is the flexibility to do classes remote or in person, live or pre recorded. She combines her excellent training with all kinds of great examples that really help me to visualize the smallest adjustments to make the most of my work. I felt so much better than I had in years, so I began taking classes 2x a week, during which time, I was able to meet and experience several different teachers. All of them were strong teachers in different ways. I felt so great, that for Christmas, I gave a set of classes to my husband, along with a pair of Pilates socks. Ha. Let's just say that this was not on his wish list. :-) But after one class, he was hooked. And we have been taking classes together ever since. Then when the pandemic hit, PCA turned on a dime, and in no time began to offer virtual classes. And we LOVE them. Because they work even better for our work schedules, we were able to sign up for 3x a week. We take one at 9am, one at 7am, and one at noon. We take classes from 3 different teachers, Ivy, Pia and Marcos, and each is excellent in a different way. So we feel like we are receiving a well-rounded movement regimen every week. Today, class started at 8:30AM, but the studio is open at 8AM. I knocked on the window, was greeted…read moreby Beth, then walked through the door at 8AM. She helped me to rent a mat for free because it was my first visit. Then, she informed me about other classes at Pure, as well as a tour of the facility. The free mat was perfect for what I needed. There is an eyelet on the top left side of the mat, and that is where you lay the mat down in the room. I asked if the spots were reserved ahead of time because they do that at other studios, but there is not need to reserve a numbered spot - it just helps with mat placement and ensuring that people have enough room to move uniformly. I love that! I hate a crowded hot yoga room. The studio is surprisingly cleaner than most hot studios. There is a hydration station to refill your water bottle, which is nice because you aren't forced to purchase water. The restroom is really clean. I haven't seen gym showers that clean even at Equinox in California which I thought that the 3 SF Bay Area locations had nice enough showers. You are limited to a 3 minute shower here at Pure, but that's fine for a quick rinse and it's great when you have to share and are waiting for another person to finish, but they are taking forever to finish. The class itself was a nice succinct Bikram yoga class with the same 26 postures in 60 minutes instead of 90. Beth was a wonderful instructor who gave me a little trinket after my first class. I'm very excited to visit again on the traveler's pass!

Ann's crew of skilled Pilates trainers are friendly and concerned with meeting your particular needs. I started going as a complete novice, not even sure what Pilates is. Now I know it is one of the best ways to: improve posture, build and tone muscle, lose weight, recover from injury, prevent injury (especially back), prevent or treat osteoporosis, increase flexibility and get a whole body workout. Erin Leary, my usual trainer, has been encouraging and patient with me along the way. I recommend working with her or any of the talented people at the studio. My advice if you're thinking about trying it- go for 5 sessions and get the idea of what it's about. Your body will probably be so grateful that you won't want to stop. That's what happened to me and I've lost 15 pounds, I actually have a waistline now and some pretty awesome muscles in my arms and legs. Additionally, my chronically bad posture is majorly improved as well as my general well-being. I intend to stay a client at Ann Arnoult's indefinitely because it is honestly the best thing I have ever done for my health! p.s. some people think Pilates is only for women but plenty of men go to Ann Arnoult's too!
