Get ready for a long review about how amazing somaspace is because we have a lot to cover! Their speciality is one-on-one classical pilates which is what I do there three times a week with Shelby. This is not a cardio type of "pilates" but true classical pilates which makes you strong, flexible, feel great and have perfect posture. First things first - yes, the private pilates is expensive. But the price is right in line with the going rate for one-on-one personal training which is exactly what you're getting. Of course it's more expensive than a gym or classes, it is one-on-one attention tailored for you. The way I view it is there's nothing better to spend money on than my health, and paying for private pilates classes ensures that I actually show up, do the work, and keep my body healthy! I would rather cut corners anywhere else and maintain my health. You can tell that somaspace specializes in classical pilates because they have all the equipment - reformer, cadillac, chair, toe corrector, ladder barrel and any other crazy contraptions mr. pilates invented! I just mention this because I have been to other studios that only have a cadillac. The variety in equipment just keeps things a little more fun and interesting. The studio space itself is a cute little old fashioned house with wood floors and lots of natural light. It is a little crowded, if I could change one thing I would magically double their square footage! But it's an awesome location with easy, free parking so it's worth the smaller space. This studio is very body-positive which is important to me. There is never any talk of "get bikini ready", "flatten your abs challenge", or any "motivation" like that during the training. It's truly focused on the health of your body. So all ages, sizes, abilities, etc will feel truly welcome here which is awesome. I walk away feeling amazing in my body. I have only trained with Shelby, but all the instructors seem friendly and overhearing them train other clients they all seem to have a similar style. Shelby is my favorite because her background as a physical therapist makes her super knowledgeable about all the in-depth body mechanics stuff which we actually spend a lot of time working on. (She seriously stares at my feet to see which tiny muscle needs to be engaged!) I also just love spending time with her, we share a sense of humor of not taking ourselves too seriously! And she has the right mix of chatting a little bit but not wasting the whole session talking instead of working out which is something else I've seen at other studios. I haven't tried the group classes, gyro, or any of the other stuff they have here which is why I didn't mention any of that. All I know is if you are looking for private classical pilates this is the best place in Austin, and try to work with Shelby if you can! read more

This studio has a homey feel to it. All of the staff are very kind and knowledgeable, and make you feel like a part of the family. My Gyrotonic classes with Alayna are always in-depth and hands on. I found Amanda 3 years ago when a friend recommended I do prenatal pilates while I was pregnant. I took classes at a few studios and ultimately chose Somaspace because I liked Amanda's vibe, her space, and most of all her approach. She is so dedicated to her education and educating her clients. Her knowledge of the body is exceptional. I felt very confident in her prenatal instruction and found communicating my needs with her was easy. Incidentally, I attribute much of my successful labor and delivery to her; I felt SO strong. I have continued with my pilates practice ever since and enjoy the ever challenging instruction. Amanda is constantly improving the studio and currently has a reformer, cadillac, and pilates chairs, along with tons of props. I have taken private lessons, duets, and group mat classes. I love them all and Amanda is very conscientious in planning the workouts. She keeps the classes fresh and enjoyable, as well as very challenging. Obviously, I cannot recommend her enough. read more

I have been taking pilates with Amanda at somaspace pilates off and on for about two years. I had never taken pilates before -- only some irregular yoga - and I have absolutely loved it. As a dedicated long distance runner and someone who can barely touch their toes (and that's generous), she helped me stretch, lengthen and tone. It's been a great complement to my running regimen. She's a terrific, passionate instructor with a great balance between 'telling" and "showing." Every class is a little different; building on previous work but working on something new. I have been working with Amanda for 4 years and have loved every minute of it. I originally sought out a pilates studio after having a breast augmentation that was not healing well. I had practiced mat pilates in Dallas but was looking for more. Amanda's certifications drew me into the studio however, her personality, attention to detail and overall aura has kept me going for 4 years. She truly understands the body and its biomechanics to make sure you are getting the best workout for your body. I have many unstable joints and we work on these things so I can do my "heavy lifting" workouts on other days. Without Amanda I would be lopsided and in pain. I started Pilates about a month ago at Somaspace and it has been a life changing experience for me. The studio has classical Pilates theory meaning all of the machines are original in design and structure and the lessons are by the book. This makes a huge difference. Moreover, the instructors are outstanding. I work with Shannon Knisely and her approach is firm but patient and instructive. The results are amazing. I have more energy, my posture is so much better, and I'm building muscles in my core like never before. Somaspace is a peaceful yet energetic space and the entire experience is outstanding! I don't have a lot of Pilates experience, but you don't have to know a lot about it at all to know that Amanda is a completely brilliant instructor. I am an absolute beginner. Before starting classes with Amanda, I'd only ever taken one group Pilates class. I was a little hesitant starting out with a private lesson, but I couldn't be happier that I did. Working one-on-one with her allows me to concentrate on form and perform the exercises to the best of my ability instead of just trying to keep up with the rest of the class. Amanda is very accommodating and encouraging and pushes me just far enough without making things over-challenging. After my first session with her, I came home and told my husband that I just felt so confident! After our workouts, I'm definitely worked (though not exhausted) and I can feel my posture straightening. I feel on top of the world. Her studio is easy to find and conveniently located for me, as I work in South Austin. She's very flexible and works with my difficult schedule to make sure I can get in when it's convenient for me. In short, I can't say enough good things about Amanda and her studio. If you're thinking about starting Pilates or looking for a great new workout, definitely give her a try. read more

I have been working with Amanda for about two months, and I have enjoyed the experience much more than any other trainer or workout I've tried. Pilates is an excellent way to learn better posture, increase muscle tone, and gain strength and flexibility, and Amanda has been an excellent teacher. Amanda's studio is very peaceful and soothing - no obnoxious trainers and blaring music - and sessions are totally focused on your needs. Amanda knows when to push you, how hard, and when to back off - she's not afraid to make you work hard, but she'll always listen to you. The equipment is always clean and ready for you when you arrive, and Amanda is always getting new things to make things more challenging, interesting, or comfortable. Sessions are always on time, and Amanda is flexible with scheduling and payment type. Most of all, she is personable and great to work with - I never feel like I dread my pilates sessions, which is much more than I can say for most of my past experiences with personal trainers, gyms, and exercise in general! As for results, I feel much leaner and stronger, and can definitely tell a difference in my posture and in several areas of my body. Now if only I could stop eating all that sugar! read more

I feel the need to update this review as Somaspace has moved to a really great new location with off street parking on south congress. I love how the studio seems to feel expansive and intimate at the same time. I have a feeling that may be due to the fact that Amanda is a very focused professional classical Pilates teacher. It has been years now that I have been taking private classes with her twice a week and I still Love it. It is the best thing I do for my body. Classical Pilates has been the only class I've ever taken that has engaged me enough to stick with it. That is most certainly because it's a joy to do when you find the right teacher who knows how to push you, gently, and just enough, so that you see and feel the physical and mental results and still manage to have a great time doing it. read more

I started pilates with Amanda at Somaspace back in April 2011 with no pilates experience and only a little bit of yoga background; it's improved my muscle tone, flexibility, strength, posture and overall body awareness. Amanda has so much interest and knowledge in the human anatomy and is able to transpire that into every workout. When I originally started pilates with Amanda she was able to evaluate where I needed the most help and apply her years of experience and knowledge to help me correct so many problems/bad habits I had developed over the years (bad back, tight hips, poor posture, keeping too much stress/tension in shoulders). I have pretty sever workout ADD.. meaning I usually don't stick to one work out for too long because it generally gets pretty boring.. with that said, I've been working out with Amanda 2 to 3 times a week for almost 8 months and am constantly looking forward to my next class. She always keeps the classes interesting and I've consistently been able to see my progress. She is wonderful about scheduling, offering group classes (both matt and apparatus) and suggested that I work out with another of her clients (who had similar scheduling conflicts and experience) so that we both could schedule an extra class and at a lower cost. read more

I have been practicing Pilates and, occassionally, gyro at Somaspace for about a year now. I first discovered Soma when seeking another practice that was 'Pink Ribbon' friendly to supplement the yoga and other physical work I was doing to gain back mobility and strength. I cannot say enough about Somaspace, Amanda Vernor, the owner, Shannon Knisley who I most frequently practice with and Shelby Walters. I feel a) cared for b) part of a special practice and c) have gained remarkably both physically and emotionally as I've learned to reconnect with my own body and mind in new ways. At this stage, some weakness connected to a diep flap incision that supported a double mastectomy is GONE. The words 360 arm movement, full back bend, forward stretch and sit up - which did not exist when I began are now CORE parts of my practice. Thank goodness I found Somaspace.
