Joy Moves is a beautiful facility with a lot of diversity . The studio itself is inspiring and calming. They have fun, eccentric workshops and are reasonably priced. Their hours and continuous class options are pretty accommodating. Here are my 2 issues with JM: (1.) The classes are too big! Each time I have been there, it is a constant struggle to keep from kicking someone in their eye. (2.) This is just me, but I am a bit put off that there is no water fountain or source of water here except for you to pay $1 for plastic (bad, bad anti-green Joy Moves) bottled water. You can bring your own water, however, if I just paid $18 for a workshop, I think you can give me a bitch ass glass of water for free. No? Oh no - what's this? JM has raised their prices since I first wrote this review. Takin' it down a notch. read more

I'm going to be real honest in this review...which might make me a touch unpopular. Let me start with the amazing---bc JoyMoves definitely has amazing points. It's clear the instructors know what they're doing. Trust me....working out my inner thighs has been my DREAM....and the booty bar class that I hit up...totally got that area. But let's face it...anything pilates related will get that area! The room isn't incredibly spacious, but you don't feel crowded whatsoever. There are plenty of machines, and I never saw a class that took up all of the machines. So, that's a plus! Ok....so here's my honest feedback. I didn't see one woman of color while I was there, and there's definitely a clientele base to this studio that isn't ... well---one that's going to be very diverse. This was actually quite the deterrent to me. Yes...it's a studio in Westlake. Should I be surprised in a city as segregated as Austin/Westlake Hills? Probably not. In one of my classes, it was just me and one other woman...and the other woman basically chattered THE ENTIRE CLASS. I'm not kidding. THE ENTIRE CLASS she was talking about her personal life, her exercise preferences, how us "young girls" don't have the stamina for Pilates as the "older gals"....and relentless pointers on how I could do better on my posing. Never once, did the instructor stop her or try to move the focus away from her chatter. I had a month long pass...I went twice. That was my opinion in a nutshell I suppose. read more

I'm the sort of person that has to make myself exercise. I have two left feet, I'm lazy, I'm uninspired, and I don't like being watched. I need to feel like I'm in a safe environment where people aren't judging me. JoyMoves is that place for me. Studio 1 is the most beautiful dance studio I've ever had the pleasure of sweating in. The vaulted ceiling is painted like the late morning sky--serene blues and whites, just gorgeous to look at. The floors are bamboo, and the open wall of windows faces into beautiful Texas hill country--so much better than facing into a parking lot like so many other studios in town. The windows are decorated with tiny mirrors that reflect sunlight--it's kind of like magic. It's so calming. I love being here. I take Nia and Yoga here, and I have been very happy with both, but my real love is for Nia. There are lots of class times, so it's easy to find a class to suit your schedule. The Nia teachers are all very different--if you have the chance, experience classes with as many teachers as you can because they are all so incredibly different. My favorite teachers are Elissa and Shoshanna (the owner). Elissa is zany and full of life, while Shoshanna's workouts are measured and meditative--I find myself really getting into the zone under Shoshanna's direction. The facilities are bright, clean, and welcoming. They've recently added a spa, and the wonderful team there will happily give you a tour if you ask for one. The spa is beautiful. The prices can't be beat. It's cheaper than the other Nia studio in town (NiaSpace) and the facilities are bigger and nicer. They have an excellent deal where you keep your credit card on file to be charged automatically each month and your membership drops to an incredible $59/month. That's a really incredible deal. I love this place, and I can't recommend it highly enough. do yourself a favor and check it out--they offer one free movement class to first-time students. You've got nothing to lose--I bet you'll fall in love, too. read more

JoyMoves...I wish I knew how to quit you. But only because my wallet hurts every time my monthly dues come out. It's not that I don't think the value is there--I do--I'm just a poor student and it's hard for me to justify even a "bare bones" Pilates membership at $78/mo for 4 classes. However, it should speak pretty highly of JoyMoves that I quit for 6 months, was miserable, and vowed to do anything it took (that was legal) to support my habit. I will say that the member perks which help you earn points for things like referring friends, having a birthday, or scheduling online are a great way to earn an extra class pass here or there. Money aside...the classes: Lisa and Krystal are great instructors and I always leave class feeling refreshed and glad I went. I'm a Reformer junkie, but have also done Mat/Tower and JumpBoard classes to mix it up. Pilates has provided better results than any other form of exercise that I've ever done. While home over the holidays, my mom took me to Joy Moves for Nia and Pilates classes. I enjoyed both of them, but the Nia classes were my favorite. I had previously been scared away from Nia after taking a class in Boston where the instructor FORCED us to make those stupid noises while we did the moves and made us do lots of pelvic thrusting that kind of started to creep me out. At the risk of sounding cheesy, I felt like the Nia experience at Joy Moves was much closer to what Nia is supposed to be like. Friendly women of all shapes and sizes, mostly early-30s or older (but a sizeable minority of younger ones like me, too), just letting it all out, having fun, and getting a good workout out of the bargain. Thankfully, the instructors never pressured me to make the stupid noises - however, other people seemed to enjoy making the noises on their own and I liked that they felt comfortable being able to do that, too. The workouts were fast paced, fun, and my mom and I were sweating buckets by the end. The studio is large, airy, clean, cool and spacious - really a lovely space. They provide mats, "magic circles" (is that really what they're called), and good instruction for mat Pilates, and they have some interesting-looking Pilates machines upstairs for those of you hardcore honeys. By the end of the holiday break, I was still inwardly rolling my eyes at some of the new-agey nonsense that invariably accompanies a Nia class. That's one of the reasons I like Pilates - you just have to roll around a lot before you leave, instead of talking about feelings. However, after returning to Boston a couple of days ago, I realized how much I missed spending my mornings at the studio and the nice, relaxed feeling I would get after class (this feeling was undoubtedly helped by ending my workouts with a pit stop at Rudy's for delicious breakfast tacos). Joy Moves is a real "Austin-y" place, in the best possible sense. read more

It was my first time trying pilates and the instructor was very kind, encouraging, and helpful. I enjoyed it so much that I bought a month pass and have been going 4 times a week ever since. I started at JoyMoves with the introductory offer (unlimited classes for a month), and I found myself there at least five days a week. It's definitely an investment, but worth it: I purchased a membership after the offer ended. The instructors are patient (and can be tough...in a way that benefits you), they explain the moves well with easy-to-understand cues and are committed to helping you get the best workout possible by gently correcting your stance. When I moved up to Level 1, I truly felt like I accomplished something...it made my day! I would recommend JoyMoves to the beginner and the experienced. I absolutely LOVE Joy Moves! I have been on the hunt for a new Pilates studio ever since my previous instructor moved to a studio that was just to far away for me. After many failed attempts I finally succeeded! The studio is beautiful and conveniently " for me" located just past Barton Creek mall on Capital of Texas Hwy. The price is very fair and you have quite a few different options for the style class that you want to take. When you first sign up to take classes here you are required to buy a package of 3 private Pilates sessions. I had never heard of this before but from what I hear it is quite common & I am actually really glad that they do this! First off you get 3 private sessions for $100 bucks! That's a good freakin deal! Second it shows the instructor what level you are so that you don't get put into a class that is to slow or fast paced for you. I wish all studios had the same prerequisites so people "myself included" didn't waste time in classes that don't fit in. Once you are cleared to start taking group classes you have options. They offer Reformer, Tower/ Matt, Barre and a few others that I have not had the chance to take yet. Joy Moves is also really good for Prenatal Pilates. I am pregnant with my second baby and have been here from the beginning. I am now 8 months pregnant and still taking classes! They really watch out for me and help modify my exercises and moves so I don't hurt myself or the baby. There is a lot more that I could write about these guys but I am only going to mention one last thing. They have a rewards program where you receive rewards for signing up for classes on line etc. these rewards get you things like free merchandise and free classes. O ya and they offer free random classes every once in awhile just for fun. So it pays to like them on Facebook if you are a member so you are first to know about these classes and other specials and promotions that they have. read more

Bridal Beauty and Body by Pilates. I lust. This studio is a can't-beat-it-won't-quit-it-save-me-from-myself irresistible addiction. If you love Pilates, or are a newbie, I cannot rave about JoyMoves enough. The studio is simplistic but beautiful and serene. As a working mom pulling 60-hour weeks and business travel, this mama needs some serenity in her life! The Joy Moves staff is made up of the most qualified trainers I've ever seen. Even if you've never done a minute of Pilates, they'll get you up to speed quickly, and ensure you're using the right from at all times so you don't have to worry about injury. Plus the classes are so small, it's like having your own private Pilates instructor every time. I started taking Pilates with them 6 weeks ago, and already my strength, posture, and overall body awareness are unbelievable. Even my yoga practice has improved immensely. Go to Joy Moves and try them out - you'll be amazed at the results, and you'll actually love "working out" for a change! Beautiful space for Classical Pilates Training. JoyMoves Pilates has everything you would want in a Pilates Studio. It's bright, beautiful, spacious and very clean and pretty. Ive been going to Shoshana for a few months now, private class, and have loved her! She is very knowledgable and fun. I had a c-section last year and when I first came to her, I could literally not do 1 sit up, not in the least. After a hand full of sessions I was already doing plank, a bit shaky but did it! Now I actually have abdominal muscles that are strong and holding me up without pain. I had low back pain (thanks to no ab muscles) often and sometimes it was out for weeks at a time...not anymore! I was somewhat intimidated at first since I'd never done pilates before, but the instructors are very friendly/welcoming and do a great job of teaching. The class sizes are only 6 people tops, so it allows the instuctor to make corrections and ensure everyone is using proper form. The decor is LOVELY! The trainers are also quite beautiful. I was slightly injured for my free intro class and they took good care of me, even giving me a quick PT checkup. (One trainer actually was also a licensed PT.) Pilates is truly a joyful workout. And Joy Moves seems to have great prices and packages, excellent trainers that aren't too snobby (you'd expect them to be as it's in Westlake), and the whole ambience makes you want to go to there. I WANT TO GO TO THERE NOW! Only one bummer: they don't allow kids under age 14. The equipment is TOTALLY fun for kids! Too bad! Oh well. read more

First, pilates is amazing. It's given me a whole new awareness of my body alongside strength and flexibility. JoyMoves was the perfect place to begin. They have great introductory deals, a points rewards program, and tons of options for every kind of class at every level. The studio is bright, the machines clean and well-maintained, and every instructor I've worked with has been excellent. If you have any kinds of physical limitations or ouchy bits, I suggest starting with privates, where the instructor will teach you modifications on the normal exercises. I first began Pilates in July of 2016 and have to say - it's truly become my new favorite form of exercise! I attribute my success with Pilates to the wonderful teachings of Sarah and to the beautiful, open, welcoming space. I have taken almost 15 private lessons with Sarah and have seen so much improvement with my core strength and overall fitness. JoyMoves has truly been a life changer for me. I have suffered with back pain for more years than I can count. I use to be a Gym rat and stayed in good physical health. Upon joining this Pilate's studio, my back pain is all but gone. Shoshana and all the teachers at JoyMoves are meticulous at using the traditional techniques. They first and foremost want to keep their students safe, while providing a diversity of challenges. They work very hard to make sure each student gets the necessary attention to perform each exercise correct. I can not speak highly enough of these folks. I have more energy, better concentration & coordination. As an added bonus, I am also sleeping much, much better. I always look forward to going to class and leave totally energized. I have been in the Physical Eduction business for over 40 years. I have taught all ages and recently retired from teaching. I started taking classes at Joy Moves over 4 years ago. I think Joy Moves is the best in Austin. I have joined other gyms, but the quality of the classes, and knowledge of the instructors were not as good. I love the reformer, mat, chair, ball, and jump board classes. It is a great work out and also a lot of fun. I highly recommend this program for all ages. It is especially good for mature students who need flexibility, stretching, and range of motion, without the impact of jumping. Very friendly, and clean atmosphere. Thumbs up! read more

As a runner that suffered a severe foot injury due to over training and poor running form, I needed to find a way to mix things up. After taking pilates classes at Joy Moves regularly for about three months I have seen significant improvement in my running form - my core is significantly more stable and my running so much more efficient. Not to mention that my posture, which has always been a problem for me, is much improved and my jeans fit better than they have in years. All of the instructors I have taken classes with are attentive, knowledgeable, and encouraging - they are truly sincere in wanting to help you reach your goals.
