Scheduled a call to review my needs and was able to get into Eric's schedule for a Friday assessment. The gym is quaint and quiet, I've driven by a million times. The parking is a bit odd, a few spots up front where you have to reverse onto S Lamar when exiting...sooo that can be a challenge. They have parking in the rear of the building which is great however there is a single entry way and well, not sure how multiple cars could park and get out. Just know your reverse skills need to be on point. The gym inside has everything you'd need and since it's not open to the public it's just the clients and trainers. That means no waiting for machines and no one looking at you while you're there. Eric is great, he's very easy to talk to and made the whole experience easy. Upon arrival we walked through the questionnaire filled out online to find out the why behind the personal training inquiry. He then did a body scan for weight and fat %, took blood pressure three times as well. Gave a quick tour of the gym and how things work then it was onto the physical movement assessment. Nothing too crazy, range of motion and flexibility tasks. Took an hour for the initial visit and came back the next day to finish a few small exercises then learn the warm up needed prior to sessions. No membership needed as you buy the session in backs, 5, 10, 20 and can be used how you want. Like that there's no long term contract to sign. Session will start in the next week or so with focus on building/repairing the base/functional imbalances before getting into the fun part. Time will tell how this goes, wish me luck!

In the past year…read moreworking out with him as my trainer 3x a week (from February 25-February 26) I lost 15 pounds... now it's May I've lost 20, but honestly, that is only a surface component of the impact I've felt. More importantly, I drink so much less without really noticing, I eat better and I've built muscle and carved out a lean version of me that's much stronger and less achy than the me I've known for so long. I feel stronger and more stable in my body than I have in my adulthood, and it really does make me feel like I have more energy. I think because I do. Nick's approach goes far beyond just "working out." He has helped me improve my stability, mobility, posture, and overall strength in a way that feels sustainable and deeply functional. It's also just so pleasant to work out with him, I never dread the gym because we go hard, but not so hard that you just want to get out of there, and yet the results are still great!One of the biggest changes I've noticed is in my shoulders and neck. I've had long-time sloped shoulders and neck tension that used to bother me by the end of every workday, and now I'm moving through my days essentially pain-free. Nick is thoughtful, knowledgeable, humble, encouraging, and incredibly good at building a program around your actual body, your goals, and your life. I feel stronger, healthier, more confident, and more connected to my body because of his training. I cannot recommend Nick enough!! Staff is super friendly, members are always down to provide feedback if requested. Every piece of equipment you need, and some you don't (which speaks to the variety). I didn't enjoy it and never felt like got any benefits from it. I was a little skeptical about Starting Strength because of my previous experience gyms. That changed after working out there for a couple of months. I felt stronger, my back pain was getting better and I was having fun. The coaches are fantastic. They are watching to ensure you are lifting properly and making sure that you progress in your weight lifting. The coaches are there to make sure you are successful. Being somewhat of an introvert I was skeptical of the class atmosphere but I have found that to be a benefit. You can learn from the members who have been doing this a while and it is fun to watch the new members come in and start out and progress. Between the coaches and the other members and the success I have had with my training it encourages me to make every session even on the days when I am dog ass tired, which is one of the keys to succeeding in weight training, to be consistent. I would encourage anyone who is looking to get stronger no matter your age to check out Starting Strength. It is well worth the money. The only person who can get you stronger is you but you need help. You need a coach to help you through the process and I have found there is no better place for this than Starting Strength.

There wasn't a formal check in process so I was a bit confused on what to do when I got there and ended up asking some random people. The workout itself was pretty weight intensive with lots of squats and repetitions. Most of this was strength training and not so much cardio. The instructor was very nice and helpful. Staff is very professional - everyone there is all about working out and getting outta there. And April - she's super nice, so of course we come back, but she has in uncanny ability to know the weight and reps that will yield jello legs/arms. we move so quickly from one thing to the next there's not the opportunity to get bored or pause for a moment to worry about how sore you'll be the next day...but in a good /pain is weakness leaving my body kind of way... Highly recommend this cute neighborhood gym and it's staff. Hope we are lucky enough to have Mo and his crew in NW Hills for the long haul!!

I started group fitness classes at Finkfit about a year ago, and in that time I've lost 35 pounds…read more(15 since the start of this year), improved my endurance, and gotten much stronger. When I started, I couldn't run around the block without slowing down to a walk. I now regularly run 3-4 miles with no problem. (I'm still slow, but getting faster.) I surprised myself last night by doing a few pull-ups AFTER the circuit workout. I couldn't even manage one pull-up fully rested just a few months ago. Group classes are offered on Tuesday and Thursday nights at 7 and last an hour. There's also some morning classes available, but I don't know much about those. (Pretty sure there's one on Saturday morning, and Paul's adding a boxing-themed class on Sunday that I'm looking forward to.) The location is a residence in the Far West neighborhood, and workouts are held outdoors. You'll see punching bags and fitness equipment on the hill, so it's pretty easy to find. Workouts usually consist of a warm-up run, either around the block (.66 miles) or up and down the very steep driveway. If you're not a runner, like I wasn't, then there's no shame in walking or jumping rope instead. After the warm-up, it's a full-body circuit workout for an hour. Paul creates different circuit stations based on the number of people there, and you go from one station to the next until you've completed them all. Rounds are usually 2 or 3 minutes, and you get time to rest/drink some water in between rounds. Like any group fitness class, at Finkfit you get out of it what you put into it. If you're way out of shape like I was, then you can take it (somewhat) easy without being judged or pressured to do something you're not comfortable with. Once you gain confidence and start feeling stronger, you can push yourself harder and Paul will be only too happy to challenge you more. I've gotten into obstacle races/mud runs like Tough Mudder, and this is a great place to train for events like that. Just tell him your goals, and he'll help you get there.

You feel like you've stepped into a place built for real training. I hit a chest and triceps workout and found this old-school tricep machine I've never seen before--it felt incredible. Some of the equipment looks like it's been around forever, but it still hits better than most of the polished machines at commercial gyms. Everything here is built to last and made for people who actually lift. The vibe is raw and focused. No egos, no distractions--just people putting in work. It's the kind of place that makes you want to go harder. Only real downsides: the water fountain was out of order, and there's not much in the way of cardio equipment. So bring a water bottle, and if cardio is a big part of your training, you'll need to get that in elsewhere. Still, if you're into that gritty, no-nonsense gym energy, Hyde Park delivers.
