Went to Big Tex for almost 4 years before moving to the other side of town. Probably one of my favorite gyms of all time. Staff is super friendly, members are always down to provide feedback if requested. Every piece of equipment you need, and some you don't (which speaks to the variety). I mainly trained for endurance sports while going here, a bit different than most, so I apologize for hogging the treadmills! 10/10 would recommend, especially for the price. read more

Big Tex has a huge community of bodybuilders, powerlifters, and strongmen, so if you get easily intimidated by big, strong people, then this gym is probably not for you. But even the strongest person had to start small, so if you can get past that, this gym has all the machines and equipment you could possibly need for a variety of fitness goals. Their day passes are $5. One area of improvement is in the upkeep of their equipment. For example, the hip thrust machine belt broke off, so it's currently tied to the bar by a knot, and the hip pad has a bunch of tears so the belt digs into my hips. Some of their equipment could be fixed or replaced. Overall it's a solid, no nonsense gym. read more

I'm going to be honest. I came in today pretty emotional after a really bad experience at a gym chain I've been a member at for six years. I walked in the doors of Big Tex and it was a breath of fresh air to see so many smiling faces and kind gym associates. Robert and his big shoulders were just what I needed to cry on! He was polite and informative and gave me a great tour of the gym. For as long as I'm in Austin I will definitely go to this gym and recommend it to only the coolest people I meet. The simple touches of having a kitchen if you need to eat a meal after you work out, and a posing room when you're competing set it apart from the rest. This gym has everything a weight lifting athlete of any kind needs. Everything from powerlifting gear (chains, deadlift bars, safety bars) to Strongman equipment. There is a large area (and a full ring!) for boxing. The trainers are extremely knowledgeable and friendly and I would trust their advice over a corporate gym's trainers any day. They are masters in their craft. This is a no nonsense gym. Come to train hard, not sit around and scroll Instagram. Everyone is respectful, puts their sh1t away (most of the time) and it's 1000% more clean than 24 hour fitness. There's always some guy cleaning and sanitizing the equipment. read more

Ive been going here for over 5 years and the gym owners are always looking for ways to improve the gym. Rob and Ester really care about their members, and the facility in general. The atmosphere in here really focuses on athletes who are determined and committed, but they never shoe away people just wanting to get in shape or get healthy, trust me if your an average person dont be intimidated by the regulars. Simple--This is a gym that has something for everyone. There are a few things I enjoy about this gym versus the dozens of other gyms I have trained at. We will get into that in a bit. This gym is solid. My review for this category of a place like this will be slightly different. Let's get into the review. Location: Located on Metric and Cedar Bend, this spot is around a gas station, laundry mat, and a Chinese takeout spot. This spot is not hard to miss. The buildings are now painted white. Parking is plenty. Atmosphere: The front door has a badge scanner for times the gym isn't staffed. Passing the front door is the check in area. There are stairs to the left hand side of the facility. There is then a full on training area with different machines and racks to the right when you walk in. There is also a little posing studio and warm-up room not far from the receptionist area. Music can be heard blaring and the music changes. This place ain't pretty but it is surely a place where anyone can zone out and take care of business. Equipment: I will just go into the weight training area for this. There are: EliteFTS things (best SS Yoke bar btw), Kabuki bars, Rogue racks and bars, Hammer Strength, Texas Strength Systems, etc. These guys have the good stuff. You want calibrated plates? You got it. You want some good iron cast plates? You got it. You want dumbbells going up to 200lbs, you got it and you probably can't lift it anyway--but you got it! I will go into my final thoughts in a bit though. Management/Staffing: Great folks. Attentive. I always see someone from the front desk making rounds and taking initiative to clean or rerack plates and dumbbells. I like those staff members who are proactive with their members and equipment. Value: I personally find this gym to be one of the cheaper 24 hour access gyms. I enjoy the atmosphere here. I also enjoy that I can finally get back to moving some heavy ass weights again without bending bars and/or getting flack from some skinny ass twig of a personal trainer named Ted that believes crossfit is the way of life. I can also say that this is a great training environment. For the price of the membership, it is well worth it. Areas of improvement: I would like to see more chest fly machines from Pec Decks to Freemotion equipment, and some more old school Nautilus machines (some of the best machines I've trained on). I also would like to see more adjustable benches around the dumbbells. For some odd reason, it seems like things go missing and the adjustable benches are the ones that disappear. One thing that got to me too was that there are not enough dumbbell increments. It jumps from 100lbs for dumbbells to like 120lbs but no 105lbs, 110lbs, or 115lbs. Other than that, this gym is just right. Final thoughts: If you want a gym that you can train at your pace, this is the best gym for the everyday person. People are helping each other out all of the time. Pricing is great for 24/7 access too. There are plenty of benches, racks, and plates around. I am personally grateful to be a member of this facility. I came from training at hardcore gyms and loved everything from the people at those gyms to the atmosphere. I HATE commercial gyms with a passion and being here helps. I don't worry about ego lifting or guys curling in the squat rack. You have a wide array of people here too. I've been getting back into the rhythm of things too after my surgery in January of this year and it's been a hell of a ride. I'm glad I can come here to build back up my strength and confidence again after a 5 month heavy training hiatus. Rating: 5 out of 5. The top spot rating. Really. Great. Gym. They have everything strength related: strongman equipment including tires, kegs, stones, powerlifting comp benches and bars, a f*%#$ing belt squat machine (which is rare in a gym, anywhere), bamboo bars, multiple racks, and so on.. The drop in fee is cheap, the membership is pretty standard, the people here seem to be friendly, and there's a lot of space throughout. Anyone from a soccer mom trying to get fit to a bodybuilder to a high level athlete can get things done here. They have everything! I don't know what else to say other than, it's great and one of the better gyms I've been to in my lifetime. read more

If you're looking for a gym that simply has weight, equipment and great atmosphere then this is your spot. I rarely have an issue finding open equipment (I typically go around 6-6:30 PM) and if there is any problem you notice you can bring it up to any staff member and they're more than willing to help. Even for simple tips and advice. The atmosphere is awesome also. You have a lot of really big men and women who you can tell that lifting is their passion here but they all share the same welcoming spirit. The owners are also easy to talk to and you can tell they take any criticism serious. Definitely gonna be upset to leave when I move but I know exactly where to go when I come back! I tried this gym out through a sweet Groupon deal and decided to stick around after it ran out. As long as I've been a member, they've made some AMAZING upgrades. They got all the equipment you could imagine needing, and you can access it 24 hours a day as a member. Hard to beat. Super friendly too. I'm a distance runner, so I'm not a bodybuilder by any stretch of the imagination, but I still like to lift...and I've never felt out of place. It's a gym that is focused on strength training and power lifting. So it has that environment. Machine after machine after machine. Free weights, lifting areas, etc. are jam packed into the space. The music is generally loud and hard rock/metal. Again, typical of a gym that focuses on weight lifting. They have every machine you could think of, be it bells, pullies, or just weights. If there is an area on your body you want to target, there will be equipment [usually a variety] that will help you achieve that goal. There isn't anything particularly flashing about the gym, no pool, no sauna, locker room etc. etc. it's really a no frills gym where you walk in do your sets and walk out. Than why the 5 stars Travis? I'll tell you. Not only is the price lower than any other gym I've belonged to, but the owner is a stand up guy who really knows his [censored] and is more than willing to help you with whatever you may need. He is at the gym from open to close more often than not and his office is located at the front of the gym and the door is almost always open and he makes himself available to you with any thing you may need. Don't know how to a machine? He'll tell you or show you. Want to know what machine or exercise you should be doing to work out the area's you want to work out? He's there to answer you. To me this is the biggest reason why I'm glad to be a part of this gym. The fact he makes himself openly available and does it with a smile on his is enough reason for me to keep coming back here. If you're looking to work out be it power lift of just focus on strength training, there honestly is no better place in Austin than this very reputable gym. I was in Austin, TX only for a few days and needed to get a training session in before hitting 6th street. I found Big Tex Gym only a few miles from where I was staying. I chatted with the owner for a few minutes, great guy, and he actually knew the owner of the gym I frequent here in DFW. I was eager to get a workout in after the 4 hour drive and thankfully Big Tex carried all the equipment I usually use, plus more! The music was great, the gym was small and personable, the layout was functional, and it had a little bit of everything. I saw some Strong Man equipment, crossfit crap, power lifting equipment, and a lot of accessory machines. I highly recommend this gym and will visit it every time I'm back in Austin. P.S. Been going here three months now. I held off on going to a "hardcore" type gym for a long time because I didn't want to feel judged for not being swole enough. Instead I did Lifetime for a year (they kept raising the monthly fee) and then 24 Hour for another two (so crammed at the busy times that I couldn't use the weights). Finally met a gym buddy who took me here. Glad I went. It's actually far less judgmental than a standard box gym... people get in and out. They're courteous, but they aren't sizing you up. There's no attitude. That's pretty much all I ask for. They're light on the cardio machines, but I don't care because I run outside anyway. Moving your body over real ground is far better training than a running on a moving belt. They do have two treadmills, two bicycles, and a Concept 2 rower, though. Not sure what the last guy's review was about... not giving him his money back after three days? There's a one week free trial period. read more

A gym that set the bar for high expectations, only to have them crushed by the owner himself. It's unfortunate to run into a facility that someone might feel may have everything. Only to find out that the establishment offers no more than that if a typical 24 Hour Fitness, or an Anytime fitness (which, there is one located nearby next to the HEB). Coming from a Boxing Gym, I was convinced this place would be my new haven, only paying $40 a month and having the thrill of my life in exercising and getting helpful tips from the owner himself (as they offer one personal training exercise). Sadly, it seems like the personal fitness trainer didn't have time for me, as he gave me nothing more than just another tour of the place, and 1/10 of his work out plan that they offer to new customers. After feeling discomfort from the owner and the people in the gym, within' a 3 day period, I've decide this gym just isn't for me. Asking for a refund, since I haven't used the facility much, I was rejected and they explained that, "We don't know any other Gym that actually give out refunds." Which is sad to hear, since when I was first told about this gym, I was told this wasn't like "any other gym" and that they're here to help those who are interested in working out and becoming stronger. Just like any other gym, all they care about is your money, and nothing more. Need a work out? You can get everything done at Anytime fitness for half the price. Missing equipment at X other gym? Save that extra $20 and buy that specific work out equipment. read more

Love Big Tex Gym! It's a great, no-frills atmosphere for working out. Don't be intimated by the "hardcore" nomenclature. Yes, the equipment is hardcore, but everyone there is great - staff, trainers, and other clients. Definitely a focus on strength training, but there's also a handful of cardio machines. More free weights than you'll ever need. Plus a bunch of strongman-style equipment (tires, logs, etc.). I first started going to this gym in Jan of this year and have not regretted it since. The "hardcore and friendly atmosphere" may sound odd to most new comers, but this gym lives up to that quote. Here you can train in the hardcore atmosphere but you can also make friends with many of the regulars that come here, along with the amazing staff at this business. The range of equipment here is phenomenal, it includes your standard gym equipment along with a huge backyard to do sled/strongman workouts, and even an area where you can try your hand at boxing. Finally, what separates this gym from all the big chains would be the sense of camaraderie. Once you go in you'll be greeted with a smile and even when you leave. And the people that go here are more than willing to give you a spot when needed. You will not regret coming here once you do! read more

Gym is unorganized and equipment is always moved around. My biggest problem with them is that I cancelled my membership in January and they pulled money out of my account 6 months later. They state I still owed money that was never pulled out of my account. Would have been nice to get a letter or email with a heads up. I had paid 2 months down when I signed up so they definitely had gotten their fair share of money out of me. If you cancel with these guys make sure you watch your bank account. read more

This is exactly the type of gym I was looking for when I moved to Austin. I required a powerlifting platform. They have one! The best part is when I'm lifting heavy and have to drop the weights I don't get bitched at; I've actually had Steve the owner come complement me after a drop! Unheard of! This place is great. It's a little out of my way but my previous gym just lost its appeal over the years. I was looking for a gym that had that "vibe" when you walk in, like you know most the people training here are at least semi-serious. Yes they have music playing and yes it's a mix of hard rock, hip hop and edm stuff. It keeps the atmosphere lively. Also, to note, this place is my clique-y like so many other local gyms. I started coming to Big Tex Gym in March of this year. I began personal training under the owner Steve Smith and he has helped me become leaner, stronger, and more confident in ways I didn't think were possible. I lost 50 lbs in about 5 months, while at the same time my bench, squat, deadlift, and OH press all skyrocketed up! I was always the fat kid growing up, very quiet shy and introverted. This gym is bullshit. I was a member of this gym for a few months before moving out of state. A year or so later I start getting calls daily from a company called "hf holdings" stating that I owe 550 dollars due to breach of contract and that I'll be taken to court. Apparently when they have you sign the membership contract they don't really explain to you that if you stop going you're responsible for an additional entire year of membership fees. They have a monolift, bands, chains, GHR and plenty of tires and sledgehammers for hours of enjoyment. Alongside the normal gym equipment.
