Best burger on the island. I sit here writing this review with my jeans unbuttoned, belly and taste buds content. First off, the house sauce is SO GOOD! The burger toppings were fresh and the patty was juicy. A truly hearty burger. I loved that the toppings for my takeout came on the side so that my bread didn't get soggy. My family and i went here for a New Year's Eve lunch. We ordered 2 California burgers and our two small children shared a grilled cheese and fry. My fiancé asked if i wanted to order my own fry, i said no because i would only eat a couple. He also ordered a side salad. The owner, who was also the person who took our order, was very polite and answered any of the questions we had about the menu. Later when he brought out the food, he brought out a big salad with two forks. Also put fry's on my plate and said "you mentioned you only wanted a few fries so i put a couple on there" and i thought that was so thoughtful. He checked on us and asked us if we needed anything throughout the time we were there. He even wrapped my son's grilled cheese when we were leaving so he could take it to go. He was very engaging and just very family friendly. The burger itself was very very good. And it was only 12.95... I've def paid way more for a shittier burger. Wow. I am amazed. Today is my first time eating here. I mourned the loss of burgermeister for so long I didn't want to give this place a try. But I'm glad I did. Everything was top-notch. Burger was fresh, juicy, and cooked to perfection. Salad was fantastic. There's only one salad dressing, the owner called it a tahini dressing, and it was amazing. A little on the spicy side. And let me tell you, if you have a hankering for french fries, this is the place to come. What they have done with fries is exactly what so many other places that profess to serve fresh cut fries failed to do. This place makes out of this world french fries. We came in and wasn't busy at all which was surprising seeing how it's a nice 75 degrees and everyone was out today. My mom has been craving a good burger for months and we finally got around to trying out this place. It was just the owner and he took our order (black and blue burger + grilled chicken sandwich + fries) and it took about 15 minutes. When we got home and opened the box to the burger we noticed he had put all of the toppings on the side of the burger with a piece of wax paper to separate the two, a nice touch showing that he really cares about his food! The fries were great! tasted like five guys fries but less greasy, the burger was also great although my mom wished it was medium rare-medium and not well done (her mistake). I got my chicken sandwich, it was good, but some parts were dryer than other parts because it was chicken breast and not chicken thighs, but i would get it again. There was also a nice char on both the burger and sandwich that didn't make the food taste burnt but just enough to get a little smoky flavor. We definitely will be returning! read more

So happened to be in Alameda and looked for a spot to grab food. Picked this spot and so glad I did. The service was friendly and pleasant. Every facet of this established was on par. Customer service, food, bagging, convenience, I mean everything. Let's talk about the placement of the food. Fries in their own support container away from the burger, (why people don't do this I don't understand stop being cheap) so fries were hot and crispy. Another great move that I haven't seen, parchment paper between the meat and bun so it doesn't make the bun soggy. I mean freaking genius. Just lil things like that go long way. I took my grandkids to Project Burger. The owner said they were out of chicken tenders so they ordered the grilled cheese sandwich with sweet potato fries. The sandwich was on thick crusted bread, dripping with cheddar cheese and was delicious. the fries were thin sliced and perfect. I had the black and blue burger (blue cheese with bacon) and it was the best burger I have had in a very long time. The service was excellent also. The kids were able to get their own drinks out of a dispenser with lots of unusual choices like ginger beer. The restaurant has benches and tables and is utilitarian but clean. I lived in alameda for 1 year with my partner and we attempted to go to Project Burger about twice a month. We would say "Oh! Let's finally go check out Project Burger!" but the place keeps such strange erratic hours that every single goddamn time we walked over there, they were closed. This happened maybe 10 times in a row without fail. But I thought to myself "they must be really good to keep such special, limited hours." And I did notice, in walking by when they were open, that the burgers certainly looked good. But sadly, this running joke of always wanting to try, but never getting to try, Project Burger continued the entire year we lived in Alameda. Finally, on my last week on the Island I was walking to diner with my friend Samy and lo-and-behold PB was open! I finally got to try what I had built up in my mind must surely be nothing but the best burger in town. Review: not great. Expensive, for sure. Large, yes. But not great. Not juicy, not hot, bun a little stale, size a little unwieldy, veggies not especially fresh. I got a salad that, while also large, did not taste like it was made by anyone who wanted it to taste good. The guy working there -- who I had interacted with throughout the year on many "are you open?" occasions -- was really nice and hospitable and I hope if he sees this review he can take it as constructive. I suggest you open later. You have a full bar, after all; why not take advantage of a late night crowd? And as far as the food... like it or not, you're gonna have to compete with Scolari's which is pretty much always open, and they make the best burger on the island. Maybe start experimenting with a different cuisine, maybe Ethiopian, Peruvian, Moroccan, or Russian. IDK. TLDR. Project burger is barely ever open and not great when it is. read more

They've kinda divided the place into a bar and restaurant, probably so little kiddies can have burgers and adults can have adult drinks without kiddies. Actually kinda like that concept. Went on Saturday afternoon before a movie. Was reluctant at first because I have never seen this place even moderately crowded. Threw caution to the wind and tried it. Food: Kobe burger was solid. Toasted buns with patty, tomatoes, lettuce and onions. Can't say the best I ever had, but solid with care. Fries were normal fair. Not outstanding but not bad either. Service: polite owner/manager/chef? Most reviewers said it's a one man show and it explains why it's never crowded. Maybe food came out slow? Anyways, the gentleman was polite. He also had the TV on the European Soccer channel. This would be a plus for soccer fans. After the meal, I asked whether "we should just ourselves," but he said he would take care of it! Based on the reviews, I decided to check it out. Nothing ventured, nothing gained - and I love supporting local business. Got a hamburger, fries, and a beer. This cost nearly $40 with a 15% tip. The portions are huge. The staff is nice. The place was a little empty. When I started eating, I realized why. The beef was like shoe leather - I don't know how long that patty was living in the freezer, but it must have been a while. The american cheese was a pale color, which is never a good sign, and fries kind of... limp. Afterwards, I immediately ventured to the local coffee shop for an espresso to help me digest what I just ate, as it immediately gave me a heavy feeling. The burgers lack any kind of flavor profile to distinguish them from the rest (for example, In N Out has a taste, McDonald's has a taste - you can't mistake one for the other). Yet, if I were to describe this, I would you the word "bland". Sorry to leave such a review, but paying 40 bucks entitles me to an opinion. read more

We were craving burgers and remembered a good place next to the Alameda theater (Burger Meister). This place is more delicious! Each burger we ordered was cooked and served to perfection. The hand cut home made fries were also so tasty! Even my picky 12 year old commented "Wow, this is a juicy burger" - this is a boy who just loves burgers (Jn and Out and Shake Shack are his favorites). If we lived closer to Alameda, we would eat here more often! The owner, Hassan, also took some time to chat with us. I even heard two guests who left say it was very good! Can share between 2 people +free topping options and choice of sesame or multigrain buns or lettuce wrap +burgers were tasty (we got the mama's mix and wagyu) +service was friendly and fast Minus 2 stars because: -- they had a sign on the side walk with student special (no specifications about what kind of student you have to be.. I'm in college. Or times the special is available) but turns out I didn't qualify since the special only applies to. "alameda high students during their lunch break" they should've been more clear.. why aren't other students eligible anyways? --the fried pickles that came with the burgers were way too salty! --the wagyu burger was supposed to come with "crispy soy onions" ours were soggy and burnt (way past carmelized) They're new so I hope they take customer feedback and make changes. Been here a number of times. The food is outstanding, if pretty expensive. It's worth it for a gourmet burger but don't come here expecting $12-15 burgers. It's closer to $20+, and nearly $30 out the door per person with fries/sides and a drink. Again - worth it for the quality as long as that's what you're looking for. Where this place needs a lot of work is service. It is very slow. As best size I can tell, the owner is also the only cook. And also the cashier. Over the half dozen or so times I've been there, I have never once seen anyone but him working there. He moves smoothly between the front counter and back kitchen, but that makes it a very slow process to get your food. During my most recent visit last week, it took 28 minutes to get my food. I don't mind a little time, but 30 mins is getting to be a little much. I asked him in a quite friendly manner when he estimated it might be ready, noting it had been almost 30 minutes. He shrugged in a "well what am I supposed to do?" kind of a manner. I would suggest hiring some help. Great food, but they can improve the service a bit. read more

This is place is great because it serves all kinds of purposes: great food, fun takes on the classics, family friendly, but also chill enough to watch sports with a cocktail or draft beer, and outside seating. It's right beside the theater so you can grab a quick bite/drink before a movie or stop by after for dinner/drinks to finish off date night. The burgers are good, lots of options in terms of patties and a homemade veggie patty! I'm always thrilled when an establishment puts forth the effort to make a veggie patty instead of phoning it in with a frozen, purchased patty. The soda selection is awesome! It's this small batch soda that tastes so much better than the regular brands you get lots of other places. The fries were great too and they give you plenty! Things I didn't try but looked good: chicken wings (I hear the homemade sauce is really good!), Kobe burger, fish tacos (saw some hefty avocado portions on those!), grilled cheese (next time for sure!), and milkshakes (old fashion with the whipped cream and cherry on top!). There's a lot of other items on the menu too but I didn't see those come out while I was there. Check out my photo of the menu. They have a FULL bar! There's a little divider that separates the main dining area from the bar. The bar has two big tvs that had college football on. They have beers on tap on both sides of the restaurant. So if you just want a beer with your burger, you don't have to go to the bar to order. We hung out for awhile after we ate to drink and watch the first weekend of college football. The thing I notice the most when I go somewhere is customer service (good or bad). It can ruin a good meal or make a mediocre meal great. Project Burger has it all. They have good food/drink (see above) but their service was fantastic too. They went out of their way to make sure we had what we ordered and were happy with our selections. Dad and I were on vacation and wanted a quick bite before a tour and stopped in. First thing that popped out was you get a good size burger. Not only good size, the food was very good! I got the BLTA and my dad got the turkey burger; both were well worth the stop! Last thing I need to mention was the service, not sure if it was the owner himself or just the an employee but it couldn't have gotten better!
