Moved to a new neighborhood in Ashland and this was the closest optometrist (or maybe I couldn't see much further. Heh.) Dr. Dukes was excellent. Very quick and professional, we talked about Los Angeles and architecture, about my girlfriend, about fun stuff....he got me through the exam by distracting me with interesting conversation. I like that because let's face it, optometrists are usually pretty boring. I was in and out in a half hour, which I appreciated...didn't have to sit around and wait and fuss. Original review: Eric Duke and his staff turned an eye exam and lens fitting into an enjoyable experience. Everyone is upbeat, knowledgeable and helpful. There was no sales pressure or upsell, I got exactly what I needed and learned some things in the process. I felt like I had a family of care instead of a visit to a practitioner. If you need glasses or contacts, they do a great job at a reasonable price. I actually look forward to my next visit. Updated review (Nov 2012) This morning, I had the exact opposite experience. In retrospect, Eric Duke did a great job for me when I was seeing him, sadly a misunderstanding with staff and poor communication, on their part and on mine, ruined my next visit dealing with staff, I wound up finding a different eye doc. I have been seeing Dr. Dukes for several years now. This review is the result of a visit with another optometrist in town that made me realize what a good optometrist Dr. Dukes is. I had something in my eye from riding my bike. It had been irritating me for at least a week and I called to make an appointment. Dr. Dukes was booked up and I decided it couldn't wait so I made an appointment with another optometrist in town for that morning. This guy spent 20 minutes with me, found nothing, gave me an RX for some drops and charged me $240. I've never paid anywhere near that at Dr. Dukes' but I was now obliged to fork over the money. Two weeks later my eye was still irritated. I called Dr. Dukes and explained what was going on and they got me in right away. I sat in the chair and Dr. Dukes did a complete exam and found all sorts of things in the eye. It was then that I realized that the other optometrist never once touched me. Dukes was flipping my eyelids back, and flushing my eyes repeatedly, and gently digging (as gently as one can stick something in your eyeball) all sorts of stuff out of my eye. After about 30 minutes of working on me, he charged me $40. And the best part is - he found what the other guy couldn't and removed it. So, bottom line: Dr. Dukes is not the flashy sort of optometrist who wears the Prada white lab coat. He is a genuine person, down-to-earth sort, comfortable with himself. But who cares if the guy wears plaid shirts? The bottom line is he is a fully involved optometrist, with every patient, who spends the time to listen to you and deal with the problems. No contest. I have been to many, many optometrists over the years.. but wow, Dr. Duke and his staff are amazing!!! Hands down the best!!! They fixed my horrendous Wal-Mart prescription and have been giving me the best care ever since. It's obvious that Dr. Duke is knowledgeable as well as thorough. His staff are the sweetest and go out of their way to be helpful. For example, I had a pair of plastic framed glasses from elsewhere, and his wife took the time to melt and fix them/reshape them so they fit comfortably. No more headaches! They even let me know that my favourite Focus Softcolors lenses were no longer being made and to stock up while I could. My exam was very quick. So quick it was concerning, like the optometrist had somewhere to be and I was wasting his time. I bought frames as well and when I picked up my new glasses, I could tell instantly that something was wrong. I felt cross-eyed almost and mentioned this. But they assured me that it was "normal" and my eyes would need a few weeks to adjust to the new prescription. My eyes continued to feel cross-eyed for over a month. When I called to have them re-checked, I got in same-day. The optometrist was just as fast this time, and kept asking me to read lines of letters while his shoulder was in the way. Then one of his staff came in and they quietly discussed my prescription and I overheard him say "I'm sorry I thought that was a seven not an eight". Meanwhile the staff member was completely blocking the letters while the doctor kept asking me which lens was sharper. Then the doctor told me that this new prescription should get rid of the cross eye and when I asked him if it was wrong the first time, he was very careful to just say that this one should be better even though I clearly heard them admit they read the prescription wrong. So I wait two weeks without hearing back before calling and talking with the staff who had read the prescription wrong. He has no recollection of me coming in, no notes, can't find the prescription and keeps saying "I'm not trying to blame anyone, but SOMEONE seems to have misplaced your prescription" (as if I care whether he did or someone else). He can't even find my purchase of frames or my prescription in their system which was concerning. Then he tells me I have to come back in and get my eyes tested again. Then he calls me back and says he found the prescription but they didn't get ordered because "someone" (not him) put the prescription in with the contact prescriptions. So they didn't get ordered. He apologizes and thanks me for "not getting 'very angry'"? Maybe he could detect a hint of annoyance but I have stayed calm this entire time. I explained to him I couldn't come in during the week due to work, and he just told me to leave the glasses with my wife and have her bring them in. I can't see without them. I broke my previous pair. So wed, the day before thanksgiving, I take the day off so I can get my new prescription. I call to make sure they are open and the phone just rings, with no answering machine explaining if and when they are closed for the holidays. Today is the day after thanksgiving and same thing. I have to go back to work on Monday so not sure when I will be able to get my new prescription, but this has already cost me a day of work due to their lack of communication. Their price is affordable but that savings obviously comes at a cost. read more

I had called as a new patient and made an appt 2 weeks out. I gave them my insurance information and phone number and they said they would verify that I was covered. I was unaware that my vision insurance was under a different company than my medical. So when I arrived for my appt (rushing to get there 10min early with my crazy schedule) the receptionist told me that I was not covered. I asked her to check again because I know that I have vision coverage. After filling out all of my paperwork she told me I was covered under vsp and that they are out of network for them. They should have called me when they first found out so that I could make other arrangements. Thanks for being a giant waste of my time! read more

Do not use this optometry service. They made major mistakes in my prescription. I paid over $450.00 for glasses etc. I am home bound and my glasses were delivered to me to my new home location 5 hours away. When my glasses came in, the prescription was so pour that I could not see out of the left eye lens of the glasses. I called Progressive Optometry to ask if they could reimburse my money so that I could find a doctor closer to my new home, 5 hours away. Since I am home bound it makes it very difficult to drive 5 hours to his office so that they can correct the mistakes on the lens. Instead of helping me he and his wife were condescending, and said to me "you do not know how to use glasses" What does he think, I used them for a bra"? They were horrible to me and completely unhelpful. No empathy or compassion for my situation. This was an immensely disappointing and demeaning experience. Think twice before you use their services. Walmart and Cost-co are far better in every way. The least they could have done is to offer to give me a refund for the prescription. I can understand that they would need to charge to for the evaluation. But, not even that was offered. It would have saved a lot of heartache and my comment on Yelp. read more

Amazing Doctor and great staff. Eric was a wealth of knowledge, friendly and really took the time to understand my visual needs. He even recommended a single vision pair of computer glasses and now, no more neck and shoulder pain. What a Joy. They have a great selection of frames and to my amazement they were not anymore expensive than the chains stores. WOW quality at a nice price. I would recommend this office to anyone. I had made an eye appointment for my daughter and myself, because we had both been experiencing some difficulties in vision. The appointment went well, and Dr. Duke was both professional and easy to talk to. The glasses were paid for and a discussion of possible occupational therapy for my daughter was discussed. There was a break down of costs for therapy, and a very unclear breakdown of what insurance may or may not cover. Bottom line became that I would need to pay out of pocket for all the therapy expenses and that insurance may or may not pay for costs. When I had asked if we can call my insurance company to find out if they would in fact cover expenses I was told that they don't recommend it as then insurance would most definitely say no. ??? The entire cost breakdown became rather shady at that point in time. Six months later I got a bill in the mail for a test that they did for my daughter to dig further into what therapy would entail. Six months afterwards. I had called the office immediately to discuss my concerns as to what the bill was for, whether or not it was just, and that no one had let me know that the test would cost me $120. I had left two messages and received one returned call and then didn't hear back. I assumed the matter had just been dropped as well as the charge. We had decided not to do the therapy with Dr. Duke due to two other professional opinions and word of mouth around Ashland. With two girls in the Ashland school district and a very large family living in the area, it was very easy to ask around and get opinions of other parents in the valley. I received a new bill in the mail just yesterday for the same cost of that test. One year later and apparently this was still an issue. I had called the office to discuss with the office manager as to why I was disputing the charge and was met with hostility, combativeness and what felt like an interrogation of what type of person I was and a question of my intelligence. I was talked over, and I could barely get a word in to help defend my feelings and thoughts as to how I could be disputing the cost. The money was not the issue. The way the billing and costs information were being slyly disclosed was the issue. I was never allowed to just speak without being spoken over to the point of me crying on the other end of the phone in complete and utter frustration and disbelief. I was never given an "I'm sorry" or "What can we do to remedy this so that you will be a return customer?"... I was instead told that "further action may need to be taken so that they can get the money they deserve". My husband and I have decided to just pay the 120 dollars so as not to have to deal with this any longer. We will most definitely never return to that office. read more

Dr. Dukes and his staff are Wonderful. For years I have always felt like my vision could be better. Dr. Dukes took the time to sit and discuss what my visual issues were. He was the first doctor to ask " Where do you do most of your near work? " Turns out the other Doctor gave me a standard focal length and I needed mine set a little farther out then most people. I am a general contractor and work on blueprints all day. Dr. Dukes took me out of progressive lenses and put ,me in a bifocal. For the first time ever, I could see the entire blueprint. AMAZING. I see better and saved money!!!! HIs staff was extremely helpful and wouldn't let me pick out a smaller frame because, like my old frames, I didn't have enough room for a comfortable reading area. The girls were so fun to work with picking out glasses. The whole office has a great Vibe and you can tell they really care about their patients.
