Was solo on a Saturday night and wanted to go someplace where I didn't feel weird dining alone on a weekend evening, and maybe read a book while I ate. Proffitt's Porch was absolutely perfect. It was a grey, rainy evening, and there were only a few other people eating outside (the deck is covered, so you can easily eat outside when it rains). With the soft gentle rain, the still water in the adjacent lake, frogs chirpring, and brids singing in the surrounding woods as the sun set and darkenss crept in, it was HEAVEN. I ended up not even reading my book -- I just sat back, relaxed, listened to the frogs, and gazed at the water & woods. I ordered a sandwich and a beer, both of which hit the spot. Haven't eaten here in probably over 20 years but it was just like I remembered. The family and I enjoyed a very good lunch. Choices made included smoked turkey, steak and cheese and BLT sandwiches. Sit on the covered deck and watch the 100s of hummingbirds, while sipping on their sweet tea. The red beans are simply a must! It's one of the best and most traditional styled red beans and rice dishes you'll find in this area. I always order the Cam. Named after the son, it's reminiscent of a muffuletta and pairs well with the red beans. My wife usually gets the chef salad and plenty of Comeback Sauce for dressing. I can't tell you the first time I went to Proffitt's Porch, but rest assured it was AT LEAST 30 years ago. And I always stop by whenever I'm in the local are and it NEVER disappoints! I love the fact that this is down a long and windy road, away from the city noises and off the beaten path on a beautiful little pond in the woods. It even has a beach are and volleyball court set up, so don't be surprised if you stop by and see people just hanging out on a beautiful day! My #1 go m-to is their Smoked Turkey Sandwich with all the fixins. Nothing pretentious about the food, just absolute perfection! Sandwiches are served with a bag of chips in a red-plastic basket. I absolutely love this spot. I take parents here every time they come into town to visit. My mom goes crazy for their gumbo&garlic toast. I always get a sandwich-- it reminds me of my favorite po boy shop in NOLA (where I resided before I moved to Columbus). I also love that it's just outside of town tucked away. Campbell was super friendly on the phone when I placed my to go order, but driving to their restaurant was daunting to the say the least. My first time in Mississippi, so I was petrified driving down an unlit, highly forested area with a lake on either side of the road in super dark and rainy weather. It seemed to me that I was driving through the scene of my own horror film, but I really wanted that salad so.. Since it was very late, raining and there were no patrons inside, I parked at the base of their stairs and ran up the steps (mostly because I was surrounded by dark forest and what looked to be an abandoned mobile home) as quickly as I could. Once I got inside and spoke with Campbell my fears subsided. He was friendly and warned me to watch out for deer on my way back. I would still recommend folks to visit during daylight hours though haha The seafood salad had plenty of imitation crab and shrimp- wasn't able to finish it in one sitting. I liked the dressing that came with it, something like a thousand island. A decent salad that will fill you up. I was more so impressed with the red beans and rice. The flavors were nearly perfect, not too bold and they maintained the flavor and juiciness of the sausage.
