Private Volvo Mechanic - Auto Repair Near Me - Chicago, Illinois

After realizing how much I was paying to get my 2018 XC60 serviced at the dealership, I began looking around for a mechanic that had great reviews, didn't gouge clients, delivered timely, communicated well, and performed great work. I found just that.... When I needed a major component repaired, he was honest about the repair and gave me options. If it is something he wasn't comfortable doing, he identified it would be better to have it done at the dealership. That honesty, I really appreciated! I have never had any issues with the repairs, the costs were justified/reasonable, and the customer service was amazing. I highly recommend the PVC!!!! read more

I am new to Chicago and found Private Volvo Mechanic. I had broken my right mirror on a 2018 V60. The base cost just for the mirror was $1800 and he immediately advised me to buy a used one on Ebay. Guided me through part and color, cost me $225 plus $300 labor, which was far less than dealer. I then had him do a full brake job (much overdue) and tuneup. All were done perfectly and for probably two-thirds or less of dealer cost (not even counting parts). He also buffed out a serious scrape for $70 (!) I strongly recommend him to anyone with a Volvo, but he also works on other cars. read more

Finally a solid mechanic who loves his job and Volvo - He is like the mechanic in Seinfeld show with his SaaB, true advocate and the passion for his work. I found him on yelp with rave reviews and sure enough I was impressed with his work. Fast turn-around and good work, he went the extra mile and cleaned my engine and so far so good, runs well. I have a Volvo XC90 out of its service contract and found Private Volvo Mechanic due to the positive online reviews. Prior to service and evaluation for more significant work, he was very helpful and friendly, and scheduling service was very easy. I only needed a routine service and oil change, but he was thorough in evaluating my vehicle, also pointing out options for repair if I planned to maintain the vehicle for longer. He was very friendly and knowledgeable in person and plan to return to him for any more involved service and repairs. read more

I found Ed in 2020 after other mechanics had (somewhat expensively!) failed to resolve a fuel leak with my 2004 S80. He instantly recognized that the issue was related to the unique design of Volvo fuel tanks and noted why previous repairs had failed--and then he fixed it all for a reasonable price and threw in a couple other quick fixes as well! Since then, he's helped me keep it on the road at 219,000 miles. He knows these cars inside and out, and always has good recommendations and advice. There's no better option! read more

I needed new headlights and he did a great job for a fair price. He also inspected my car and gave me useful information!

It is very difficult to find a mechanic at any service shop that specializes in Volvo repairs outside of a Volvo dealership. I found Private Volvo Mechanic on Yelp about four years ago. Since then I have taken my 2016 Volvo XC90 to him for all repairs. He is extremely knowledgeable, very detailed, and takes the time to explain things to me unlike other mechanics. He also suggests what repairs are needed before preventing further damage to my car, and what can wait. I appreciate his honesty. I have recommended him to a few friends who own Volvos, and they all agree he is a very honest, knowledgeable and fair mechanic. He has saved me thousands of dollars by doing repairs privately instead of through the dealership. I highly recommend Private Volvo Mechanic to anyone who owns a Volvo and needs service. read more

I bought my 2006 Volvo S40 T5 new, and have tried to maintain the car well. I recently moved to Chicago and needed another trust worth, honest, competent mechanic. I received all that and more with the Private Volvo mechanic. He diagnosed the primary issue, completely examined my car, made recommendations for things I might wish to address now, and we discussed likely future service needs. I have ceased looking for another mechanic. Honest, hard working, GREAT communication; he made this seamless. While he specializes and seems busy with Volvo's, I have a Lexus SIV which I will place under his care. Spectacular in Every Way. read more

Perhaps the best mechanic I ever had. This was my first time visiting and i can say that Private Volvo Mechanic is amazing. Another great experience with this business, repaired my AC problem, replaced my cracked windshield and fixed the rattling under the car all at a good price and quality service. Would have been an expensive dealer visit for sure. read more

I purchased a 2006 Volvo C70 for my daughter. Although a pre-inspection had been done by an internet based company called Lemon Squad giving the car a clean bill of health I had a nagging feeling that there were some underlying issues (there was some vibration in during acceleration, rough idle). As Volvo's are a little different from other brands of cars I wanted to find a specialist to have a look. Doing some looking around on the Swedish car forums (Swedespeed for example) I found that Private Volvo Mechanic kept coming up for being knowledgable and performing high-quality work. So, I reached out and got a response very quickly (like less than an hour and it was later in the evening after normal business hours). After talking about the issues I set up an appointment and Private Volvo Mechanic went through the car in detail and showed me what needed to be fixed. I agreed to the work and when the parts came in set up an appointment. Car was dropped off. During the next couple of days, I got texts with updates about status and estimated time of pick up which was great. When I picked up the car everything was completed and the car was much improved. Overall, if you have a Volvo this is the person to go to. He knows his stuff and works hard to get the job done in a timely fashion at a reasonable cost. As a note, his price for a timing belt change (using Volvo parts) was about half of what a local dealer wanted to charge me. read more

I'm glad I found Private Volvo Mechanic! I brought a Volvo C70 to his place of business in April 2018, to inspect the car before purchase. He inspected it, told me to buy it right away! I did and I never looked back... the car is running like a champ. He gave me a very fair price on the inspection! Brought it back for a wheel alignment and he took care of that too for a very good price. He is the man, especially if you have a Volvo! He's reasonable, trustworthy, friendly and loves working on Volvos. If you own a Volvo, the best thing you could do is take it to him. You will not be disappointed. read more

My 2013 Volvo S60 T5 FWD needed an oil change and brake fluid exchange and eventually needed a full replacement of the oil filter housing. I lost trust with my volvo dealer after some previous dealings. Went on Google/Yelp to find a nearby mechanic that works on Volvos. A lot of positive reviews for the Private Volvo Mechanic. Took a chance by the reviews. Well...the reviews didn't lie. Ed is a very knowledgeable, very informative and a trustworthy individual. He explained everything in great detail. His prices were far less than what the dealer quoted me. I am happy to say that if anyone asks me if they know anyone that works on Volvos...my response without any hesitation will be "I got a guy!" read more

Great independent mechanic to take care of your Volvo. My 2003 XC70 was cared for by a Volvo dealer for years. About 5 years ago I switched to an independent shop. When my daughter moved from California to Illinois with the Volvo, we looked for a mechanic who would be as good as the company left behind. I was worried that a mechanic would take advantage of a young college student needing a car repair. In searching for my Chicago mechanic, I looked at PVM's reviews. Thought they were too good to be true. Well, they are good and deserve to be. My daughter took the car to PVM. He examined the car and sent me videos of the work that needed to be done. There was nothing suggested to be done that was unnecessary. PVM did the work quickly. As a summary of work, he replaced a damaged axel, replaced cracked brake lines and replaced the brake fluid, and replaced worn bushings and tie rods. The price was fair. We will be back when we need our next repair. read more

PROS: Amazing communication (mostly through text) - I don't think I've waited longer than 15 mins for a reply from him...ever! Flexible Schedule - Quick Turnaround Expert Volvo Tech (he knows what he's talking about - great explanations) Fair Pricing and Options given (no pressure) Beautiful Clean Shop Polite CONS: I wish he would fix my other cars (Toyota/Honda) :) After two attempts to fix an issue my regular mechanic admitted he wasn't equipped for the job and recommended I take my 07 xc70 to a Volvo specialists. I did my research and found Private Volvo had 5 star reviews. I called him on Dec. 22 thinking I'd hear from him after Christmas - he got back to me via text within the hour. He gave me a few scenarios based on the info I had for him and open times to drop off the car that day. What mechanic would take a car on the Saturday before Christmas?? It ended working out that I dropped the xc70 on Sunday Dec. 23rd. He would send me an occasional text to give me updates (amazing!). I woke up on Christmas Eve with a text from him saying the car was ready! I figured he'd have it for the week. So, phone call Saturday Dec. 22nd - Sunday Drop off Dec. 23rd - Ready Monday Dec. 24th - THAT IS UNHEARD OF! He sat me down and we went over diagnostics and gave me several scenarios based on my future ownership of the car. He was honest and realistic. Despite my xc70 having an ongoing issue - I feel at peace knowing Private Volvo is helping along the way. He has clearly mapped out what I will more than likely encounter in the near future in regards to repairs. Any issues since he's been equally as accommodating as my first trip. I truly feel taken care of and that's great service which is rare! It's as if Private Volvo treats me as if I am a family member and they are doing me special favors or if he is my kid's (xc70) doctor. Needless to say I highly recommend Private Volvo! read more

If you require a knowledgeable and dependable mechanic, Private Volvo mechanic should be the one. I've been bringing my 2004 Volvo XC70 to Ed at Private Volvo mechanic since moving to Chicago four years ago. I wanted someone who was knowledgeable about Volvo's and expected good service based on the reviews I had read. What I received has been great service and knowledgeable advice about keeping the XC70 running perfectly even now (and especially now) at 150,000 miles. On the first service, Ed went through the car and had a laundry list of small recommendations in addition to oil and filter stuff, like the cabin air filter, the catalytic converter hangers rusting away and a few other items. On the second service, we had him do the cars second timing belt with Volvo parts, tensioner, and water pump at less $$ than other places I could find. The cars first timing belt was done by a Mercedes dealer on the west coast and no Volvo parts were used, Ed corrected that. He also fixed an exterior windshield post, a spur of the moment-do this now, kind of service and he squeezed me right in. My wife and I plan to keep this car to 250,000 so finding Ed was a godsend. If you own a Volvo (or want an inspection of a used Volvo before purchase) from the 1960's to 2020 and later beyond, I would not hesitate to bring it here. Anyway, I can't speak highly enough and recommend PVM-Ed wholeheartedly. read more
