I just finished a 3-week series of healthy eating with Chef Elizabeth. She was very engaging and gave a lot of detaIled instruction. There was plenty of hands-on cooking. She engaged everyone and paid special attention to students who needed extra confidence. I loved her recipes!!! She was great about making sure we tasted the raw veggies before we cooked them. She taught me about veggies I always stayed away from because I didn't have a clue about what to do with them. During this 3-week class I learned that she was also teachIng a class on Herbs, oils & vinegars. I jumped at the chance to take another of her classes and she did not disappoint. It's good to have a cooking school close by that I feel comfortable recommending, more importantly a good chef to recommend also. I took the Instant Pot class today and it was fabulous! I learned a lot about this appliance and cooked a fabulous meal in the process, which included Mushroom Risotto, Chicken Cacciatore, Bread Pudding, and Steamed Vegetables. It was delicious! I gained so many insights, even about methods that I thought I knew. I had several "aha" moments. And Chef Elizabeth is a wonderful, patient instructor. Group of friends recently attended a cooking course at PREP to celebrate a few birthdays and learn how to cook something new. The owner, Lisa, and her staff were informative, helpful, and most importantly fun! The entire cooking course lasted a little over three hours and we would have stayed longer if it were not for work the following day. The course comprised of making 2 main, 4 sides, and a salad (which was my favorite). PREP provides all the ingredients, tools, and instructions which they go over completely and then allow the group to prepare. Our group of 14 (some experienced cooks and others not so much) enjoyed breaking the menu down and forming 3 groups to see who could prepare the best dishes! Luckily, all the dishes came out excellent and we enjoyed a wonderful dinner with several bottles of wine. The entire experience was fun and enjoyable! I've included a pic of my plate. Prep is the place!!! Where else can you spend a few hours learning or improving your skills, be entertained and enlightened by exceptionally talented chefs and have an AMAZING meal? Best date/friend/family time spent ever! Prep has done a great job shifting the process to keep everyone COVID safe and still very involved and hands on. My teens have loved taking classes and now they have no excuse not to help in the kitchen! Haha!! My last class was meat and potatoes with chef Rahm. Omg the brick chicken!!!! This review is for the Pro Pastry Baking Series I came across Pro Pastry series from coursehorse and I am sure glad I did. I learned a lot of techniques that you don't get to see when watching videos from you tube or just looking at the recipes alone. This specific class is a 4-week series, 4 hours per class. I can't believe how fast I am able to make several things in less than 4 hours! They provide all the ingredients and materials in class and you are more than welcome to bring your own if you wish. You have to bring containers or baking dishes because you get to take home whatever you make, otherwise you eat it there. I learned to make tarts - from crust to filling, creme brulee, souffles, mousse, bavarian filling of the cake, swiss buttercream, chocolate lattice (?), and diff types of bread. The teacher gives us homework and we have pop quizzes (recited) to ensure that we learn. The staff are amazing! Ultra mega helpful, now I know it is their job but the big plus is you see a big smile on their face when they do it. You feel like family when you in there. I almost forgot to mention the 10% discount you get from their products when you're enrolled. Highly recommended to try one of their classes! read more

We had such a fun time at PREP! I had no idea this little gem was right around the corner. We took a Cinco De Mayo cooking class and had an absolute blast! The food was delicious and plentiful. They even have wine and beer! We went home with full bellies and recipes and memories to last! We made new friends too. If you're looking for something fun to do instead of going to the movies or out to dinner definitely give this a try! I think this would make a super cool and unique gift for people too, thinking engagement, newlyweds, anniversary for mom and dad, hosting a bridal shower, work event, or any occasion really! read more

They have amazing recipes that they teach you which are perfect for some family friends or a special someone. If you ever wanted to cook but was always anxious if it turns out good or not. This place has your covered! They teach with a lot of details and there recipes are very simple to follow. If you're the type of person that is lazy and always order food online (myself included) you should know it starts to become quite pricy especially delivery fee. Seeing how much we enjoyed a private cooking class while touring Tuscany our son bought us prep kitchen gift certificates. We signed up for a cast iron 4-course dinner (corn casserole, Brussels sprouts, chicken vegetable, and chocolate brownie dessert) taught by celebrity chef Rahm Fama. The Friday class which we attended with 16 participants, began with demo of some rudimentary knife skills and cutting techniques. Chef Rahm was down-to-earth, knowledgeable, with a good sense of humor. Class was spilt into three teams for hands on preparation, including vegetable cutting and sautéing them in cast iron skillets, following printed out recipe instructions and Chef's coaching. It was a fun learning experience. If you're into wine (and they have a good selection at reasonable price), its best to purchase a bottle of wine before class so you can have wine with your meal. read more

PREP is a unique cooking boutique / cooking class experience. Whenever I am there I find the most useful and joyful things for my kitchen. The cooking classes are amazing! Where else can you step into a cooking experience with Le Cordon Bleu Gran Diplome Chef Elizabeth Whitt? She is incredibly talented, friendly, and quick Whitted! You will learn professional techniques and how to incorporate easy delicious recipes into your daily life! One of the things I love most about Chef Liz is her ability to cut the b.s. out of any recipe. She taught me how to think critically and not blindly follow: why add milk to eggs? Well, that recipe is left over from the depression to "extend" eggs, now you can just use eggs! I really like knowing not just how but why things are done in a recipe. She inspires me to think of the many ways a recipe can be done. Her voice is like my own personal Jimeny Cricket in the kitchen (why are you doing that? Do you need to scrape bone broth the whole time or can you just wait until the end?) Take all of her classes! PREP has a great staff of chefs and is owned and run by an awesome gal Sydney! My friend and I came here for a Tapas, Paella and Sangria class with Chef Elizabeth Whitt. We checked in with the owner, Lisa, who was behind the register. She was very professional and so sweet. She showed us where to sit and answered our questions. Lisa also introduced the Chef and staff and gave us some information about how the class runs. Basically, there are 3 large work tables and you make the menu you sign up for with everyone at your table. So if you don't fill a table with friends (6-8), you will be cooking a meal with new friends. Our Chef and kitchen manager were excellent. We had all of our questions answered and learned a fair amount for being on our second cup of sangria. =) A couple of hints if you plan on taking a class: 1. Bring an apron, they don't supply one. 2. If your menu doesn't include alcohol, or even if it does, you can buy a glass or bottle of wine to have while you cook. The cheapest bottle is $10. 3. How much you learn is up to you. Pay attention and get involved. If you hang back and resign to chop for your table, you will miss out on the cooking at the stove. I would advise you to shadow the Chef, and you will maximize your eduction. 4. Pay attention to where you sit. We got lucky and sat with some really great people, who were in a group of 6. There were some not so great people sitting to our left, and I was grateful I didn't choose to sit there by the end of the evening. I heard some horror stories from some ladies in our group that they sat with some people who goofed off and ruined their food. 5. I highly recommend the classes by Chef Elizabeth Whitt, she is patient, kind and extremely knowledgeable. Each class has a different Chef. 6. I've seen that this Prep Kitchen has offers on occasion on Groupon, I am going to check that out as the cost of our class was $79 and the Groupon offer can be up to 50% off. read more

False Advertising... not an experience worth $70. Background: I have lots of cooking experience, particularly in Italian cuisine. I was looking for a class that offered challenge, but did not get it. I attended the Pasta Workshop, with the option of making 1) Ravioli, 2) Manicotti, 3) Linguine with Tuna and 4) Homemade Marinara. I was raised by a Sicilian Nana. I know how to make Marinara. The reason I signed up was the learn how to make pasta and ravioli, not sauce. I was thus EXTREMELY disappointed when my boyfriend and I were assigned without choice to make a simple marinara and a ricotta filling for the manicotti. To add insult to injury, another group sequestered one of our tasks to make the manicotti filling, so all we had to do was make the marinara. When I quietly mentioned to one the aids, (Sung?) that I was disappointed, she was rude and asked me in a abrasive tone why I didn't say anything when the cook was assigning jobs. I can answer that: It's difficult to be the sole person to raise their hand in front of a group of strangers and begin a new class with a complaint. I preferred to try and be cordial, quiet and discuss it more privately. Well, the aid was very curt, rude, unapologetic, and told me to just jump in another group and deal with it. When I asked for the manager's name, she told me "not to yell at her" and asked for MY name, as if I was out of place to be disappointed. (I would never yell in a group of people in a classroom setting...) I found her attitude really off-putting, especially since I paid $70 to be there and I was a customer. The class essentially lost all structure from there on out which I was happy about. Everyone started doing whatever they wanted, and I ended up learning how to make pasta and ravioli by being a bit pushy and jumping into other groups. The saving grace of the class was an absolutely kind, quiet and helpful aid who spent most of the night patiently answering my questions and teaching me how to use the pasta machine one-on-one. For those things, the class gets 2/5 stars. The actual food was mediocre at best, which was disappointing, but at least it made the dingy portions easier to deal with. The ravioli was dry inside and each dish needed salt. No one seemed to like the fettucini with tuna (which included a weird sour cream sauce?) The class was labeled as a pasta class, so I thought it was ridiculous that one of the main pasta recipes (manicotti) was revised by the cook and made with what was a thicker version of a French crepe... Susie talked REALLY loud the entire night, even when she was conversing with us one-on-one and not instructing... my ears were ringing by the time I left. She also seemed scattered and made a couple mistakes in regards to the pasta flour amounts. I remained friendly the whole evening, because it was obvious my complaints and disappointment didn't matter to the staff I approached and I wanted to make the best of the situation. But I would NEVER return nor recommend this place to any friends or family. Suggestions: 1. Staff should take complaints and requests seriously and not make the customer feel poorly if they are unhappy about something (basic business etiquette). 2. Students should be able to request to participate in specific dishes beforehand. 3. Susie needs to speak a little softer, especially in one-on-one conversations. 4. The recipes need serious revision and should be advertised properly, i.e. on the website the recipe should say "Manicotti" Crepes, because that's what they are. 5. The portions should be a little bigger for $70 (although since the food was not great, I didn't mind the small portions). 6. The actual class style and structure should be revisited and explained in detail to potential customers. read more

This amazing store is great to touch and feel specialty cooking gadgets! They've got the cutest, kitsch aprons and a great selection of hard to find cooking tools. Service is great... Now to the even better part...the cooking classes! Hate supposed cooking classes where you just get to watch things happen. Not so here. This is all hands-on and it's BYOB or W! And you get a full meal at the end of it all. My mom and I have taken three classes taught by Elizabeth Whitt, who was formally trained at Cordon Bleu in Paris. She's a great teacher and her menus are always lovely. We haven't experienced the other instructors yet, but I hear they are just as great. They even have kids classes and cooking basics classes. The cooking class experience would be a GREAT bday gift or date night. So fun and you get to meet a few other people, share wine, messy hands and good times. First off, I LOVE to cook and I can cook pretty well. However, I know they can help me get to the "next level" here. I've taken 2 classes - Knife Skills with Chef Rahm Fama and Sauces 101 with Chef Elizabeth Whit. I learned something new in both classes. Not only are the classes informative, they're fun. Just be sure to ask questions - they will answer them. Chef Elizabeth Whit is very open about cooking, techniques, and answered all my questions. I felt both classes were worth my money. The staff is very friendly - Bobby is a crack-up and is familiar with all the items in the store. Know that the items are high-end and they're priced that way. The one purchase I did make was the Shun Santoku knife and its the BEST knife I've ever owned. It's almost surgical. I plan on taking the Professional Series in January and I'm looking forward to it. read more

Great store for specialty cooking gadgets. Currently located in the Marketplace, they are moving to the Rossmoor shopping center soon. Hopefully this will be a good location for them. I liked their cute selection of kitchen aprons that look like skirts and their cool ceramic knives display. This would be a great place to look for gifts for the cooks in your life. While I was looking around, someone was asking for a ricer. The person working the floor said they were all out because the LA Times Food section had an article on ricers a few weeks prior, so there was apparently a mad rush to buy them and they sold out. Sauces cooking class with Martin. I bought a Groupon for a cooking class and had no trouble signing up on the phone for the Sauces course with the friendly receptionist. Chef Martin started right on time but talked for 20 minutes about his credentials and the kitchens he's worked in. While I found him charming and gracious, I really could have used that time to cook instead of rushing once we were assigned our tasks. About the tasks: this class covered about seven items, and I feel like I only learned ONE of them well; the one to which my group was assigned (Broccoli with cheese sauce) but the other sauces we just watched other people make. This is not the best way to actually learn, in my opinion. My suggestion is to narrow the offerings down to 4 mother sauces, each of which the participants ACTUALLY cook, and leave the rest out. While I was learning the cheese sauce, there was a balsamic reduction being demo-ed (but it didn't go with anything nor was anything suggested) a beurre blanc being created (also with nothing to pair it with) a tomato sauce being assembled (it was eventually heaped into a pile of potatoes) a hollandaise being whipped (couldn't we have poached some eggs to try this with?) and mysteriously a mac and cheese appeared at serving time (but it was not on the recipe sheet were given.) Overall I think Martin is patient, talented, and has a big heart, but I really wanted to learn to cook sauces. 75$ for one sauce is not worthwhile. The production line idea doesn't work, and if I had paid full price, I think I would have been disappointed. read more

Ok so I have to admit I had and absolute Blast. Chef Martin from New York was so much fun. He was relaxed and though things were a little quick in the beginning he made sure everyone was on the same page. He was very open and made everyone feel at home. My only -1 star is because well since not everyone that takes the class is a pro chef there were several sanitary/hygene issues that put me off. Ladies please tie up your hair during the class. Yes it may not be as cute but soo much better than a hair net and everyone should wash their hands at least 3 times during the course of these classes. My father is a chef so it comes second nature to me. At the end of the class all of the cheeses get "raffled" off everyone walks home with something. But sadly for me there was a hair in one of my queso blancos...eew. Also contributing to the -1 star is the store is very limited and rather small. You cant find anything relating to the cheese making class in the store which I mean in a way is marketing for them to sell stuff. Things were very pricey there also, a cute apron ran for $89.99!! I mean I cook but not enough to justify that expensive of a apron. Sur La Table has a much larger store and when you take their class they use items you can find and buy in the store. When I finished my class at Sur La Table I walked away with $100 worth of balsamic vinegar that I have never used but bought because I was so hyped up from the class. read more

I was referred to this store by "Bed Bath and Beyond". I inquired about healthy preparation of foods and what cooking oils and prep utensils I needed. Long story short. I had assistance from a Master Chef who was the employee that took over my questioning. I was asked by the chef about cooking oil. I was under the impression that all olive oil was the same. I was directed to the oil expert. I got a quick education about labeling. I was given exact nutrient information and was allowed to taste each kind. After deciding about making the purchase came the big surprise - cost. Cost was reasonable for that level of quality. I purchased the large bottle. I always use the Seal Beach "Bed Bath and Beyond" and not my local store because they had been helpful in the past. I got real lucky as the sales representative gave me specific instructions to cooking the foods I routinely make. Yes, overall I do lead a charmed life. read more

I've taken a 2.5 hour dinner class here 3 times and have really enjoyed all 3 classes. The themed menus are really varied and it's easy to find an appealing menu. The quality of the meals that the classes have prepared have all been surprisingly pretty excellent! The flavors of some of the dishes and desserts have been as good or better as ones I've had in pricey fine restaurants. Tonight, we made an excellent corn and lobster chowder, grilled bone in marinated steak with olive tapenade, grilled calamari and sausage fennel salad, and a mind blowing salted caramel chocolate tart with Chef Rahm Fama. All three classes I've taken were with Groupon deals (no issues using the Groupons whatsoever) which made for excellent values because the prepared meals are included. I'm currently taking the Chef Pro Series I class, and I LOVE it!! I cook quite often at home, so I signed up for this class to expand my skills and learn new techniques. Chef Dylan is awesome. In such a fast paced class, he still takes the time to answer questions and make sure we understand what we are doing. It's great to learn from someone who has such an intense passion for food, and the process from start to finish. Yes, our classes do run a bit long, but I think it's perfect. I would much rather have a longer class to learn more, than cut it short because time ran out. The food we make in each class is absolutely amazing. Brined chicken, fresh pasta bolognese, hand ground pesto.. And I still have a few classes to go! I've already learned a ton of new things, and it really helps in the kitchen at home. This is helping me develop my passion for cooking, and I couldn't be happier (I was an extremely picky eater.. Not so much anymore!) I can definitely see myself coming back for another class! read more

This is a cute little establishment tucked in a corner of a bustling shopping center. The staff are friendly and the kitchen is clean. You can bring your own wine for a $10 corkage fee or they sell wine there. If you come beverage less they offer tap water. Three stars earned for 2 main reasons: 1) the first 40 min was a sales pitch about the products they offer....snore 2) you don't get to make everything on the menu. You are assigned a dish for the sake of time. I really wanted to experience the prep and cooking for each dish. I would go back but only for a discounted class. This is only for the cooking class, which was awesome! First of all, BYOB. Oh hell yes, we all know that's the beginning of a great night. The main teacher was hilaaarious and I had so much fun. We decided to sign up for a different kind of date night and I was certainly pleased. The food we made was delicious! We did the barbecue night with 2 different chilis, ribs, salad, and an amazing cookie baked in a cast iron skillet. It wasn't too hard to make the food, especially chili... I mean, you kind of just put all the stuff in a pot and walk away. The cookie was easy enough, I wish I had a cast iron skillet to make it myself, but I could make do. The class itself was so much fun, I was expecting a bunch of old fogies, but there were lots of fun young adults (both literally and figuratively)... with plenty of wine & beer. Overall: I loved everything about it, except that Seal beach is super far from San Clemente and neither myself, nor my boyfriend, knew that. oops. Revised review: If using a Groupon for a class, I recommend actually going into the store (it's best if they are not busy) to schedule your Groupon Class. If calling to schedule your Groupon class, look at their class schedule before calling and have a few choices lined up. It will save you some frustration. I am new to Groupon, and when I saw that Chef Martin Gillian teaches here, I immediately jumped on the opportunity (I took one of his classes when he was at SurLaTable, he's awesome). Here's my story. It's mid-late August and I wanted to take his class in mid-October. The day after my Groupon deal settled, I called the store to sign up for the class. The store rep told me the requested class is full and refused to put me on a waiting list, as there were already three people on the wait list. Further, the online roster that shows open classes is not up to date and they are all full as well. She then recommended I check back in October when they post their next schedule of classes and try again. Now here's the kicker! I was able to sign up for the same class in October by paying full price! So the class wasn't actually full (to Sandy V.'s point) just full to Groupon users. GRRRRR! My Groupon deal expires next August. Since I'm locked out until October to even try again, and if all classes are full again, I have to wait for the next schedule posting. Do you see where this is going? Now in fairness, the face value of the price paid doesn't expire, just the reduced price for the class does. It's looking like I will be lucky if I can even use this Groupon for the actual deal presented....NOT COOL! This sure sounds like a bait & switch scheme. I took two classes here: one was a sushi class and one was a French macarons class. I used Groupons for both with no problems. I really enjoyed the macarons class! We covered macarons, chocolate ganache, and waffle cones. However, I would have liked to solely focus on macarons, as they are the most difficult of the three. I found that this class in particular had a tad too many people, especially at the end when we were taking away some of the goodies--people were quite greedy! In this particular case, I would have enjoyed a smaller class. The class also went over by an hour or so, which was fine with me, but I imagine it would be a problem if people had other plans. The second class was a sushi class with a professional chef from the sushi institute (I had to pay an additional $20 on top of the groupon because this is a premium series). Anyway, we learned a lot about ingredient quality, the chef's background, etc, which I enjoyed. He kept us on a good schedule and we covered everything without rush. We even learned how to make spring rolls and cool sushi shapes. Love! Overall, I feel like the classes are generally okay, but it often depends on the topic and the teacher. I probably wouldn't pay full price for the classes though, although I would buy another groupon if I found another class I was interested in. read more

I've grown up cooking my entire life. Lucky me in that I had family who won prizes for baking and a mother who explored international cuisine before it was ever the fashion. I just couldn't chop vegetables to save my life. I'm a leftie and no one could teach me. I saw a groupon for the Professional Series and since I was turning 50, I decided... it's never too late to learn. The owner had no problem with the groupon and I had the chance to take my classes from a FoodNetwork Chef! Boy, did I jump on that. I'm really glad I did as my knife skills now make me happy. I just keep getting better with time. I also learned invaluable tips, new techniques and learned about new tools. Chef Rahm made every class exciting, even when I already knew how to do something, he inspired me to push that knowledge further. I'm thinking of opening a catering business up the Central Coast after having had the opportunity to learn more from Chef Rahm by taking additional classes. If you're thinking about it... DO IT. I had no idea this place even existed...and I live around the corner! A groupon for olive oils in Seal Beach arrived in my inbox one day, and I thought "why not?" Little did I know what I was in for. And yes, I'm a balsamic vinegar snob. Just like I am with my wine. They're made from the same stuff so it makes sense, right? I purchased my first item (18 yr. old aged balsamic vinegar) after trying a few of the other ones. Wow. Their infused vinegars are incredible! Very flavorful and thicker than the store-bought versions. You'll pay a bit more, but trust me it's worth it. You'll never be able to go back to the "balsamic vinegar" they sell in supermarkets. And for those who care about sustainability, if you bring back your beautiful bottle, they will refill it and give you a 1.00 off your purchase :) The second item I purchased was the Tuscan herb olive oil. Smells and tastes divine! I wish I'd bought more Groupons! Jasmin was very kind, helpful and nice; go see her! If you're buying gifts (like I was) ask her to match an oil and a vinegar for you! I live in the area and have made my way from Peet's to Prep to wonder and dream of taking a cooking class. Well, Christmas bought The Gift Card and so it was I enrolled my husband and our favorite friend couple to join me on the adventure. We all had a great time, enjoyed the layout that allowed everyone some freedom to roam and observe various happenings/teachings, food was great and we immediately signed up for our next session in April.
