This was such a fun experience. I attended the Tuscan cooking class, and although it was pretty full, we ended up making some new friends along the way. There's an option to purchase wine, and while the selection is limited, it's clearly curated and high quality. The Tuscan menu was simple yet absolutely delicious. My only minor critique is that I wish the class had been a bit more hands-on--the instructor occasionally took over rather than letting participants do more themselves. That said, I understand time constraints and how challenging it can be with a large group. I imagine this experience would be even better in a more intimate setting. Overall, the food was excellent, and the instructors and staff were fun, friendly, and engaging. It is on the pricier side, but you're essentially getting a three-course meal, plus a 10% discount on anything in the store the day of the class, which is a nice bonus. read more

I've been doing the Virtual Cooking lessons for years now but they have added a new feature, the Mighty App. This has really helped with logistics and being able to participate live. Always the classes are great with local tips for shopping for any items not in your pantry. The shop itself is fabulous especially for this time of year. A bottle of fresh flavored olive oil and fresh flavored vinegar, a new apron, Staub or Lodge item would delight any fellow cook not to mention the dozens of stocking stuffers. The in person classes are a lasting gift and so much fun. The Julia Child series was unforgettable. This is an excellent date idea for couples or just a fun group activity! You can purchase wine or other drinks prior to starting the class. Aprons are provided for your use. The fun prints are generally kid sized. In my class, we did the Romantic Italian food which was a 4-course meal including salad, flatbread, baked chicken, and chocolate mousse. There are 3 tables with 5-6 people that work as a team. The prep area is well spaced so you can figure out how to split the work. I thought it would be a while before we ate but it actually went by much faster. The dough is premade so you just knead it out with olive oil and add toppings. I did not work on the chicken but it looked like it only needed to be seared before baking. The chocolate soufflé was fun to make and really quick and easy. Took my gf here for a cooking class on risottos and we had a good time. Parking was easy at the city lot nearby but a bit expensive. Our instructor was a lot of fun and the food was delicious. I haven't re-created the meal yet, but I do plan on doing so in the future when we have a little more time. Risotto's take a bit more time than I'd previously thought. While not difficult to make, I am glad that I attended this class in order to get some tips that should make things easier. I've been to a lot of cooking classes over the years and this is one of my top three, so I definitely recommend them. If you can afford them that is. This was a complete let down despite most of there good reviews. I'm hoping the class we took was a fluke. We came in for the Valentine's prep dinner. The price felt fair as we were going to learn how to make the jewel salad, mussels, steak with wine sauce, and a chocolate lava cake. My group and I were sadly mistaken. You are seated in two large tables. Essentially you work together as a family to "prep" but get there early if you want to pick a better seat. Immediately, the chef left a poor first impression and indicated that the menu was not carefully catered and he didn't want to be there. He indicated to the group he just picked some random recipes for that menu. Wonderful, customers don't need to know that, fake it till you make it. Again, we were already going down hill at this point. In terms of cooking or "prepping". Essential there was none. All we had done was assist as the group to make the 10 jewel salad. I added a star here because the assistants were helpful and helped non kitchen savvy customers with safe knife handling practices. We looked at how the chef seared the steak and made the chocolate cake. We had nothing to prep after the salad, so we paid for an experience in which would of been more hands on but it was not. This would have been fine but the steak was completely over cooked. So chef made a point to how to educate us but it was well done. The red wine sauce was poorly made and had no flavor. In terms of the dessert, it came with a Greek yogurt sauce. Very odd to pair something sour instead of something simple like whipped cream or some ice cream. For the price we paid, we could of had a well cooked and better experience at a restaurant. I imagine most people would choose Prep for 1) the food, 2) the experience, 3) learning how to make it all. This experience did not check off any of these items for me. The chef was distasteful and rude to many people in our class. I enjoyed the wine--- that we brought in and we sat next to a wonderful family so there was that for us. Again, hopefully this night was a fluke as they have much better reviews from other patrons. read more

We had a wonderful time celebrating my daughter's birthday with a group of 18 (half kids, half parents) at Prep Kitchen today. We did a parent-and-me cooking class with pizza from scratch, Caesar salad, garlic knots and cupcakes. Chef Naomi was really cute with the kids and did a great job of structuring the class so that we were busy the whole time and the food was ready all at once to enjoy together at the end. A group of us girls had an outstanding time at a Saturday night (6:30) cooking class here. We made a 5 course Mediterranean meal, and beyond the unforgettable food, it was an educational and entertaining evening thanks to Chef Rahm Fama. We brought our own wine to the class which was subject to a corkage fee, but you can also purchase their wine. They also have aprons for you to use, but they don't wash them after every use. Though we used theirs, they were all fairly clean. Realistically, since you're in a large class type setting (6 of us plus two others), all hands are on deck and everyone participates to make the family style meal. As a result, there was so much going on at once, that we didn't individually focus on each part of the meal equally. Someone is chopping, while someone else is grilling, while someone else is squeezing, and mixing, etc. Fine by me, since we were able to eat at a decent time (around 8) and dessert included! Everyone in our group exclaimed what a fun and unforgettable night it was. There would be no reason to go to another cooking school. I can't wait to be back. read more

I walked into prep kitchen with a friend two days ago February 19 on a rainy day. So there was just the two of us and one other person who walked in after us. Although the lady at the register did say hi when we walked in she ignored us the rest of the time. We wanted to inquire about a class and I was going to buy some olive oil and another item. We never had the chance to do either. She was helping a customer, but even after she helped her the customer looked back at us in line and leaning her elbows on the counter continued to yap away as if we were invisible. She was in no way going to walk away anytime soon. The cashier never once said I'll be with you in a minute or thank you for waiting. She just continued to talk away with this rude lady. So, I put my item back and we walked out. Never did the cashier even acknowledge us as we left. Needless to say I was a bit annoyed at the whole situation. Don't people get trained on customer service anymore?? It was also my friends bday and we wanted to schedule a wine tasting dinner they offer. I guess they didn't want our business. This is an awesome kitchen store, not only do they have all the tools you need to prepare a delicious meal, they offer classes to teach you the needed skills. We have taken several classes, most recently the Chef Series with Chef Dillon. We learned so much and had so much fun!! My mom was a fairly plain cook, so I never felt very "empowered" in the kitchen. Here I am now, a grown adult, learning how to really cook!! Very cool!! My husband looks forward to coming home for dinner every night and tasting my newest culinary treat! My husband and I went to the surf and turf class with Chef Rahm, and it was nothing less than incredible!! I was super impressed at how fun and easy the class was. We have never taken a cooking class before and we could say we are beginners, but that didn't matter. I was comfortable and felt in control the whole time. Besides the great food and super fun experience, one of the best parts of the class was our Chef and teacher! He brought the class to life!! He had so much enthusiasm and his charismatic personality made the class a blast! On top of the food tasting great we left with some really awesome new cooking tips and techniques. Very disappointed. I have a personal chef that I wanted to see this place for cooking suggestions, knife sharpening, tools, collaboration. What we got was a distant clerk who cared not for our comfort or patronage. We bought a bottle of wine, tried to have a conversation and the clerk who couldn't be bothered to keep our wine glass full or offering snacks was at least mediocre. Really poor customer service and product promotion. I would have purchased more but couldn't get past our non-communicado. The wine was great but lacked any kind of customer service. Really enjoyed the class, my girlfriend and I brought a bottle of wine and learned out to cook chicken Marsalas, asparagus, and staked potatoes. Hopefully I can make it as good at home. PREP is a fantastic store! They have a variety of kitchen tools but the real stand out is the classes. We have taken many classes there including bread baking, Thai cooking, and a variety of other classes. All of the classes we have taken there have been great. There are several chefs teaching different classes each month and we have been uniformly happy with each class we have taken. The most recent one we did was "Steak and Potatoes" with Chef Rahm Fama. The food was delicious, the recipes are great and easy to follow, and Chef Rahm is a fantastic instructor. He brings a huge amount of energy and enthusiasm to the class, and his love of the subjects make every class he teaches fun. read more

We took the Summer Vibes class with Cordon Bleu Paris trained Chef Elizabeth Whitt on July 12th. The menu included Lobster Bisque, Croque Monsieur, Cauliflower Waldorf Salad, and a Chocolate Torte. I have been taking classes from Chef Whitt for 6 years. She is an excellent instructor. This was a "hands on" class, so we actually participated in making these dishes. She is excellent at explaining the "why" with the techniques utilized in making these dishes. Her recipes are always very easy to follow and you can make them at home! The "head chef" Rahm Fama is a total douchebag! As soon as he realized that his Thai Cooking Class only had 5 people instead of his expected 15-20, he stopped trying and mailed it in. He was both condescending and unprofessional. Not to mention, it was obvious they did a half ass job in prepping for the class, since Chef Rahm didn't have all the necessary ingredients to make the various dishes. So we were delayed again as we had to wait for his assistant to get back from the store. Let's talk about the food itself....bland at best. My girlfriend even commented that she's made better peanut sauce at home. I have no doubt that's true since the shit that Chef Rahm concocted was wasn't even close to restaurant quality. Major disappointment and nothing special. Total rip-off! For $89 each, my girlfriend and I weren't taught anything practical to take home to our own kitchen. Not only that, but Rahm literally stepped away from our class to take care of some business he had about a class he had the following night, leaving us standing there for ten minutes waiting on him to decide to return. We could overhear everything he was saying and it was business that easily could of have waited until AFTER class. Speaking of class, Rahm has very little. Bottom line is don't waste your $200 date night trying to have fun learning from this arrogant, mediocre "professional" chef. This class is a joke! To ownership, I leave you with this parting sentiment: Don't bother offering me a token bottle of olive oil as consolation for having such a poor experience at your establishment because I, nor any of my friends and family, will EVER be stepping through your doors again. Not when there are so many BETTER cooking classes to choose from. Classes that actually cater to the customer's needs and wants. read more

Took a class with Karla for succulent steaks and soufflé. We paid $79 each, later to find out others found a groupon for something like $49. That was my fault. We took a class about steaks, and I ended up being told to make a salad while another table made/prepped the steaks. I was pretty upset. I think if everyone comes to learn how to make steak, everyone should be able to individually learn the featured dish. Then everyone can spilt up the dumb side dishes. I also don't like that drinks weren't provided with the class. They only had tap water, but your apparently allowed to bring your own wine, we weren't told this in advance though. Chef Karla talked all night about herself and her kid. She took a bad approach to prove to us she was a good cook. She went on all night telling us about how she traveled around the world 7 times and wants to go back to school to start a completely other career and drop cooking. You would prove to me that your a good cook by teaching me all you know, not telling me about your life. Out of a three hour class I think I only learned two things I didn't know, but I could have learned them on YouTube. Overall I expected more from this class, more instruction that is. This is a class I paid for, not a social party. I'm not coming back. I'd rather pick up a cooking class at a community college. This is for the cooking class only...I did not buy any kitchen items here, although it was tempting!! I've always wanted to take cooking classes...I don't really know how to cook even though I love food. My friend and I have talked about this for a while now but we finally decided to try one. She's been to a Sur la Table class but I've never gone. I read about PREP on Yelp & since it's closer and somewhat more economical, we both signed up for "weeknight dinners" class. Our full class had around 16 people...we were separated into three teams: flank steak, pork chops & salmon - we were on team salmon along with two men, Mark & Mark. They were super nice and I'm glad we ended up with them since we chatted all night. Along with our salmon, we were also in charge of carmelized vegetables. I think our station rocked it! =) They had two main instructors there that night - Susie & Kelly. They went over the menu, showed us some basic knife tecniques and then each one worked alongside 8 people in the class. Susie was our instructor - she was super nice and energetic about class. There were a couple of mistakes along the way...like how she started to dice our onion when it was supposed to be quartered or how she started to rough chop the garlic when it was supposed to be sliced. It seemed like she was very passionate & knowledgeable about cooking but was a little scattered when it came to instruction. We did not get to work directly with Kelly, but once our food was cooking in the oven/on the stove, we would mingle and walk to other stations to see how their food was going. Kelly was also super nice...and she gave lots of helpful hints along the way too. Overall, it was a very pleasant experience...some mistakes were made along the way (no seasoning to the mashed potatoes, the scalloped potatoes were never thoroughly cooked, etc.) but they also told us how to fix these problems for the future. It was truly a lot of fun and everyone is very friendly, with instructors who are approachable - I would feel comfortable asking them any cooking question. Before you come to class, you can go next door & buy a bottle of wine to drink as you cook. They make recommendations for the menu you are having & will even chill the wine for you - bring it to class & they provide wine glasses for you. It is a specialty kitchen store so they have some pricey items here but there are many things that I don't see in the standard department store. I really wanted a Shun Santoku knife in lavender color but I resisted. =) There are classes almost every night of the week - I would highly recommend them!! So unique having the Chef local, so many topics came up, where to find specific ingredients, recommended wine, and hearing from other members describing the original dish at Bouchon in Napa. My husband and I had an AMAZING time at the Taste of India class with Chef Dylan! Chef Dylan is an incredibly nice, cool guy who is clearly passionate about what he does- not just cooking, but teaching. We learned so much about a variety of topics- how to maximize the flavors of spices, cooking techniques, terminology, how certain kitchen tools can be used, and even how to minimize kitchen waste! He also took the time to answer any and all questions we had, and made sure everyone got involved. The setup was great- it made it really easy to see the demonstrations, and there was plenty of space for all us to work. The food was incredible and there was a ton of it! I can't wait to try out the recipes and practice the techniques I learned! A couple things to note: 1) Be prepared to stay later than expected. Online it said the class was 6:30-9:00, but I think we ate closer to 10:00. 2) This particular class was on the demonstrative/educational side. We all participated in the preparing/cooking to some extent but it wasn't like we each made our own individual meal, and most of the prep (chopping, measuring, etc.) had already been done. Personally, I like how the class was organized and run- there's no way we would have been able to learn much or make so many different things if we were each doing every little thing ourselves. However, if your personal preference is to be involved in every single step and just make a great meal, without a focus on learning or technique, this might not be your ideal choice. That being said, I definitely recommend this class for anyone who enjoys cooking and wants to learn, and I can't wait to try out more classes with both Chef Dylan and the other chefs at PREP! read more

So I've taken cooking classes all over the place and was a little hesitant about PREP cuz I originally thought it was all the way down by the pier in Seal Beach. However, I was pleasantly surprised to see it was actually in Rossmoor -- just north of the 22 which made it considerably more attractive location-wise. I chose the bread making class as my first venture here and have to say I was highly impressed with the class. The teacher (Martin) was very knowledgable and friendly. He got everyone involved and ran the course at a good speed. He was also very open to questions, suggestions and different levels of bread baking. I really feel like I learned so many new things and I've made bread many times. I'm looking forward to signing up for some additional classes really soon. Now, the shop is pretty sparse.. they offer you a 10% off discount when you take a class but surprisinginly there wasn't much there that I didn't already have or wanted. I'd say about half the store is for the classroom so the selection is very limited. read more

It's a great supplement for the classes they offer as the exact equipment is available for purchase especially if you take the pastry series or single sessions. Affordable tools and some special ones on display are not bad too. It's such a well utilized space for teaching and shopping. They have various ramekins, pans for cakes and tarts, scales, glasses, knives, aprons and towels. Don't expect big stuff like mixers or any equipment. Staff is very accommodating and knowledgeable.
