    LBCC Bistro - Apple Tartin

LBCC Bistro is the test kitchen for students enrolled in the culinary program. Reservations…read morerequired via the OpenTable app. For an even $20, guests are provided a 3 course fixed menu. 3 appetizer options, 3 entree options, and 3 dessert options. With rotating cuisines, this particular week catered to Italian fare. My choices were the shrimp bruschetta, poached sole & panna cotta. Shrimp bruschetta- A large shrimp on top of bruschetta, placed squarely in a plate of fennel broth. The broth was an interesting take, as the bruschetta soaked it up & became slightly mushy/slightly crusty. Poached sole- A large fillet of sole, paired with carrots, asparagus and fennel. I could taste the sole was previously frozen, as I've caught & cooked sole, which is a fatty & flavorful fish. The fillet could've used more sauce. Panna cotta- A winner! The pulled sugar was fun to eat, providing a contrast in texture to the creamy panna cotta. Service was excellent. Located at Building V, parking is $2/all day at the adjacent structure on Clark & Carson. For a fair amount of a jaunt, free parking can be had at LBX. Wanna feel like a judge on Hell's Kitchen? Dining at LBCC Bistro is a great way to experience being a gourmet guinea pig. I look forward to booking again, soon.

Fun to watch the dishes prepared before they come out! For $25 (before tax and tip), you appetizer/salad, main dishes, dessert, and beverages! High quality gourmet meal artistically plated! We all.loved our meals and the exceptional service! We were served New Potato Salad, Yougurt Chicken or Garden Pasta, and Apple Tartin for dessert! All dishes were so tasty and elegantly prepared. The New Potato Salad was amazing! I definitely could have eaten an entire bowl it was so good! I love that the menu included the names of the students preparing (by dish) in the kitchen and serving in the dining area! Reservations are required! No walk-ins. Reservations are available thru Open Table 3 weeks out. They are only open for lunch, Tuesdays and Wednesdays for about 10 weeks each semester. Reservations book up fast and strongly suggest to keep checking if at first you don't see an opening. Definitely an underrated local gem in Long Beach!

The Brown Butter Boys - Palate cleanser - lemon, English cucumber, cotton candy grape - IG @bougiefoodieboi

    The Brown Butter Boys

I am honored to attend one of their private events, for one of my best friends' birthday. This…read morebusiness is run by 2 people, one of whom worked at Michelin level places in the past, spawned by their love of fine dining with a twist of Asian inspired flavors and Italian. Our menu is custom designed based on my friend's preferences, with a total of 7 courses + a take home gift: 1. Amuse bouche - avocado toast with yuzu, furikake, and roe - the spread is a little tangy but I enjoyed the mixture of avocado and yuzu. The roe adds some depth in texture. 2. Farmer's market salad with Asian pear, soy reduction, and radish - I like the lightness of the dish. The soy reduction is fairly sweet and contrasts with the lime vinaigrette. 3. Roasted squash with dashi, shallot, soy, and kombu - this dish is a fan favorite for most of the people on the table. I love the saltiness of the dashi, and to some extent the squash. I am not a squash person but still enjoyed it, but I like the salad and the bo ssam (later course) more. 4. TransparentSea farm congee - this is interesting as the shrimp is cooked naturally by the heat of the congee. I like their interpretation - this looks to be more of a "risotto" but the flavors of the congee also has some elements of Cantonese cuisine. 5. Bo ssam - this is the main entree that is very substantial. The soy reduction used in the salad course adds some garlic, scallions, etc to enhance the sauce flavor, and it is still sweet so it contrasts well with the pickles / pickled onion of the dish. I like the Okinawa sweet purple potato purée as well. I have had tasting menus with more food than this so my body is used to it, but at this point, most people are full and I am quite full. Fortunately (!) it is expected that there is a lot of food and they have takeout boxes available. It is encouraged so that you can get the opportunity of tasting all the dishes available, and it is not frowned upon at all! 6. Palate cleanser - lemon, English cucumber, cotton candy grape - a slight tartness to the shaved ice with small bits of English cucumber, giving a faint green apple-like taste. Despite the small quantity, it was refreshing and now I somehow have room to eat dessert. 7. Buttermilk cake - to some extent, this reminds me of lava cake, but instead of melting chocolate, it is matcha cream inside. There is also a lot of matcha cream outside, with a tart raspberry sauce that serves as presentation and a contrast to the sweetness of the dessert. I normally don't eat dessert, and this dessert course is substantial, but I really enjoyed how they prepared this. I was planning to just take a bite and save the rest for later, but I devoured it, so this speaks volumes to the quality of the dessert. We got a cookie for a take home gift which I will gift it, since I try not to eat too much sweets, so I cannot comment on this, but I am sure that it is going to be very delicious. This is a hidden gem - not too many people know of this, but the dinners allocated at a few days per month typically get sold out fairly quickly. On their website, dinners usually cost $100 per person which is an amazing deal for food at this caliber, and I paid $200 per person for a private event which is not too far-fetched, given that fine dining restaurants, after tax and tip, charge $300 per person or higher. Pricing takes into consideration of BYOB, as the business is focused on the food, not necessarily drinks or pairings.

This was one of the more disappointing dining experiences I've had this year…read more It's a joke that Brown Butter Boys can advertise themselves as a fine dining experience... at $100 plus 20% gratuity per person it is far from expensive nowadays but the meal and experience fell way below any level of expectations we had going in. We were served exceptionally bland and tasteless food in an after-hours coffee shop setting using fold-out tables, flimsy chairs. There was zero ambiance and none of the polish you'd expect at a proper "Supper Club" The food was genuinely bad. The main course was a joke -- portion, execution, flavor. We had a party of 6 and multiple plates went unfinished, and some of the dishes were a pass altogether. Sadly the only stand out item was the salad... We left hungry and walked across the street to a rotisserie chicken joint, which couldn't have been tastier given what we had just endured for the past 2 hours. Calling this "fine dining" is misleading at best. Charging $100 per person for this experience feels like robbery. There was nothing refined, thoughtful, or elevated about the food, the service, or the space. Save your evening, your money, and your stomach space. If you're anywhere near Seal Beach or Long Beach, you have countless legitimate, well-run restaurants that deliver quality & atmosphere and may not even cost you $100 with drinks... Stay away.. Don't make the same mistake we did.
