Staff were friendly, building was well-kept and clean, staff was very communicative about the treatment and care. I firmly believe people have this idea of a 5 star vacation resort in their minds when they think of rehab facilities. Will your loved ones be waited on hand and foot? absolutely not. Will they receive the care that they require to get better and ultimately return home in a clean and sanitary setting? they absolutely will!

I was at Maimonides where I received an operation and treatment following a fall from a ladder. For…read morethe sake of convenience, and because the facilities are physically attached to each other, I selected Borough Park Center for rehab. I was there for about 10 days and decided to discharge myself home, prematurely as it happened. This facility was quite grim, the food poor, the staff, with some exceptions, largely unresponsive. I consider the personnel issue largely due to the obvious fact that this place is understaffed - the CNA'S (Certified Nurse's Aides) are overworked and the morale poor. A truly outstanding exception in the care I received was in the person of Eve Romero Zaid (CNA), a person of extraordinary friendliness, ability, competence and compassion, always ready with a smile. The people in the OT department were rather mechanical and formulaic in their approach, but the PT department was excellent, especially my therapists, Ricky and Monica. I can't end this review without reference to the horrible discomfort I was subjected to by the bed, more specifically the mattress, which is covered by thick, HARD PLASTIC. (!!!) If you're confined to one position on your back for 22 hours a day this mattress becomes a major negative theme in your life. I tried moving my body as much as possible to avoid bed sores, begged for a mattress topper or an egg crate foam cushion, to no avail. I do not exaggerate. This mattress was a horror.

My 88-year-old mother recently spent five days as a patient on the 5th floor of Maimonides Medical…read moreCenter, and the experience we endured was unacceptable. I felt we were in the movie One Flew Over the Cuckoo's nest because I was right there with her every single night, I witnessed everything firsthand. No one looks out for a parent the way their family does, and the fact that these incidents occurred with me present speaks volumes. Lack of Basic Patient Safety: The nurses on this floor operated without common sense or proper safety protocols. They expected an 88-year-old woman with severe balance issues to get up and walk around unsupported, completely disregarding basic safety and patient dignity. Inappropriate Treatment During Procedures: While I briefly stepped away, my mother was treated poorly during a blood draw, experiencing repeated punctures and ignored pain. Fortunately, a visitor in the room intervened and instructed staff to stop. The staff's reaction was unprofessional. When I returned, it was clear that this type of treatment would not be tolerated. Inefficient Discharge and Insurance Procedures: Upon discharge, a nurse named Madina attempted to delay her release for another 24 hours due to uncompleted discharge paperwork. The priority seemed focused on administrative delays rather than patient health, and proper action was only taken after I threatened to contact Patient Relations. Lack of Standard Discharge Protocols: In comparison to other major hospitals where discharge includes a proper handoff, safe removal of IVs, and a wheelchair for a dignified exit, our experience here lacked basic class and training. I had to physically demand a wheelchair to ensure she could leave safely. Poor Facility Conditions: The physical condition of the floor matches the poor standards of the staff. There was visible filth, garbage overflowing from bags into the open, and neglected bathrooms that appeared not to have been cleaned properly in a long time. Bright Spots: Despite these severe issues, I want to highlight a few individuals who stood out: Nurse Justin showed genuine compassion and is a credit to the field. Arena, Sonia, and Nelly were also decent. However, other staff members were unprofessional, and I intend to follow up with Patient Relations regarding their names. Conclusion: Maimonides management currently lacks adequate control and standards on this floor. To resolve poor communication and coordination, leadership must hold mandatory team meetings to set clear expectations, define roles, and establish daily check-ins. I do not want any other family to go through this experience. Until leadership cleans up this floor and holds staff accountable, I would advise others to keep their family members away from the 10th Avenue 5th-floor facility.
