As a person who hasn't frequently visited a vegan restaurant this place was extremely tasty. I had ordered the 12 pc boneless chicken wings which came with fries/celery & this oh so tasty yogurt type dipping sauce!! And price was really reasonable that I feel I would be willing to come back & try some other items on the menu. I picked up my meal to go home due to a a sick child (husband) lol. But when I came home all of a sudden he didn't want his soup & wanted my dinner & for a meat attarian he enjoyed the wings & when I asked for the dipping sauce he said there isn't anymore.. hum The portions are definitely large enough to share with a friend or lunch the next day! The breading on the wings were a tad salty, however the wings went really well with the dip, had I known how wonderful that dip was I would have ordered extra for the next couple days since that would be wonderful on a salad.. now that's an idea!! I think I'll stop buy & purchase some for salad dressings. read more

Well, dang. If this isn't the most innovative food truck ever to grace Alaska, I don't know what is! This might be the only all-vegan-all-the-time eatery in Anchorage, or even Alaska. (readers, please let me know if I'm wrong on this, nothing is coming to mind!) When I was there, all the food they had was SW/Mex style. If you didn't know this place was vegan, the menu would look pretty standard: Birria Tacos, Nachos, Gorditas, Quesadillas... Then you realize it's all vegan and your mind is blown! They have some of the best meat substitutes: jackfruit (for pork) and beyond (for beef). I got the birria tacos, and I was very impressed. They were thoughtfully-made, and filling. I wouldn't hesitate to get them again. If someone handed them to me and didn't tell me they were vegan, would I know? I would. But this is about as close as we can get until lab meat prices come down. Give them a shot, even if you're not vegan, I think you will be surprised! Service was also great. The two dudes running the truck were very friendly and helpful and offered great suggestions such as "if you have a short lunch break, you can order your food before we open and we'll have it ready for you when we open" Rad! Preference is a gem of a vegetarian food place in NE Anchorage. With a laidback and casual ethos it is an unassuming and down to earth place to grab breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Everything is tasty and fresh, although, I wish they served horchata. All the meatless choices available made things difficult, in as much as, we had a little bit of trouble just deciding to order just one item (we ended up ordering four). Prices are quite reasonable and in line with Anchorage. Even if you just want to eat a little healthier and want to reduce your reliance on meet and poultry, this is a top choice for your food cravings. Actually, Preference is great for everyone. It's worth the drive and service is excellent. I wish there were more places like Preference. read more

Alaska sorely needs more vegetarian/vegan focused eateries. There's way too much emphasis on meat or tomato-based pastas/cajun style. This is the first restaurant I've ever seen here that is 100% vegan and offered a variety of well-liked comfort classics but in vegan form! I've recently changed my eating habits and now call myself a Reducetarian. Places like this make people like me happy. The menu is pretty extensive. We got their meatball subs, veggie gyro, and Italian BMT. I must say everything was delicious and also easier on the digestion. I have begun to feel the difference for myself. I will be recovering from back surgery starting next week so just knowing this place exists will make life considerably easier as I won't be doing much cooking. Would give ANYTHING to see him open another location in the Valley! The good news tho is even if you do live in the Valley Preference is probably no more than a 40-45 minute drive, and we're coming from foothills of Hatcher Pass. I don't know why it didn't click that this was a vegan restaurant until after I had decided on this place. Boy am I glad that I made that decision. Coming from California, I am no stranger to the plethora of vegan restaurants. I was quite surprised to find out that this restaurant is there first in Alaska to be fully vegan and to have it taste like non vegan cuisine. Even after finding out that it was vegan, I wasn't expecting anything that would blow me away. I must say that it certainly did. I've never ever had a vegan po boy of any kind, so trying out the Cajun po Boy. One word: delicious! I've had my fair share of vegan foods from vegan pho to pizza to burgers (I consider it different from burger or sandwich). It had a nice kick to it from the Cajun seasoning and the chicken tasted so good. I almost forgot it was vegan food. An all-vegan food truck? Yes please! This place was recommended by our Airbnb host and we were not disappointed. It was easy to find in the parking lot with 2 other food trucks. They have a weekly rotating menu and this week was southern comfort. I split a famous bowl for $13 with my non-vegan bf. It came with mashed potatoes and gravy, topped with grilled corn, popcorn chick'n, and a side of cornbread. The potatoes were smooth & creamy, the cornbread was sweet & dense, and the "chicken" had great texture & flavor and even my bf liked it a lot! The gravy was good and a bit salty (which I liked). It was great to split because the portion was HUGE and it was very filling. We were instantly in food comas after finishing this meal. We're excited to go back next week to try something new! The guy who runs the truck was super nice and prepared our food pretty quickly. Also no plastic was used! It came in a compostable container with wooden forks. Where have you been all my vegan life? I can't explain how amazed we were at the quality of the food and top notch flavors! My husband isn't vegan and he approved and wants to come eat here again. Pros - Food done right. Great flavors. The buffalo chicken wrap should earn a food award! Friendly staff. Open late. Cons - The seating indoors is best for 2-4 people. The sauce was pretty good. I would say it's a little on the pickley side. But it was well worth it. The burger is delicious. Upon entering Preference and placing a to go order consisting of a Jalapeño burger, Big Mac burger, Medium Fries and Medium Onion Rings. I went ahead and waited in the dining area while waiting on my order which took about 30 minutes to prepare I started to notice that when walking around the floor feels sticky and then looked at the tables which were very dirty looking. The tables had been cleared but left over food was hanging off the sides of some of the tables and the floor looks like it hadn't been swept all day. Looking past the dining room area towards the bathroom I notice a deep brown wide swath of something had been dragged or smeared on the floor and the overall cleanliness didn't look quite right. I must also mention the Home Depot bucket sitting under a table with some liquid in the bottom just looks out of place in the dining area. Also, the people working at Preference should wear a uniform or at least an apron to keep their clothes clean. It just doesn't look clean when people working in the kitchen look like they've been having a food fight which I'm sure is frustrating for them and makes customers questionable to the cleanliness of this place. The burgers we ordered were missing the cheese since the restaurant had run out of this basic item. They warned us ahead of time that they didn't have the provolone cheese for the burgers ahead of time but was still disappointing. I arrived home with our food and both of the burgers and one of the burgers wasn't even properly wrapped with everything just hanging out of the foil. The other burger was wrapped properly but both were stoned cold. The french fries and onion rings were warm but noticed they had fried these last which leads me to believe the burgers were made 15mins prior to these which explains why the burgers were ice cold. I understand that to go orders can lose heat as they travel but most places that I order from such as 49th brewing company the burgers are still hot when I open them up at home. Suggestions: 1. Preference aprons for the employees (Shouldn't look like they work in a food mosh pit) 2. A heat lamp to keep food warm while orders are getting ready 3. Better insulated containers to maintain food temperature 4. Mop the sticky floor and thoroughly wipe the tables off 5. Get rid of the Home Depot bucket and clean the floors leading to the bathroom (White floors shouldn't be brown) I like Dan the owner but he should know what would make employee and customers experiences better. read more

This is our new favorite weekly buy. This is the only 100% vegan/vegetarian restaurant that I know of in Anchorage. They are not a food truck any more and are located next to That Wing Place on Boneface. Their owner is also the head chef and a great guy. We really love their Big Mac and their Mushroom Gyro. So vegan Fat Boy approved food. Ended up calling the restaurant to make sure it was still in operations before heading there since I've been meaning to try it. Dan, the owner answered before asking if they served onion rings. Ordered a large order before asking him if he had regular sized or steak sized fries. He said they were a decent size but not steak sized. He asked which fries I wanted & asked "which one do you recommend". Then came time to order the main entree/sandwich & I told him since it's my 1st time trying him, to "impress me". He ordered me a jalapeño burger that was super tasty with a side of onion rings & buffalo ranch chic fries. Flavor explosion for everything. So Vegan Fat Boy approved. Thanks Dan. Must stop in anchorage! We tried a wide variety of foods here and ended up stopping twice. The wyngs are amazing and so are the burgers. They have breakfast and sides that are all phenomenal. My only slight criticism is including tomatoes on the Philly. A bit odd. Other than that, a great stop for vegan food. read more

Update for the new restaurant review: I am SO SO happy that Preference is a restaurant now. TBH I think we may eat here more in town now because of it. Also I love that it's on Boniface and if you're coming from the Valley like I am, it's barely into town. I told my husband we are coming here on the weekend every other week at least now :P I cannot wait to try everything on the menu and what we tried yesterday on our first restaurant visit was fantastic. We got the Western Burger, Cajun Po' Boy, Philly Cheeze Fries side, and Potato Salad side. The Western burger was very good. I think it was my least favorite of the bunch but it was still really good. I liked the crispy onion and barbeque sauce with the Beyond burger. The Cajun Po' Boy was my top favorite. They do their chick'n in house and it's sooo good. Perfect texture and flavor. I think the Po' Boy could have used a tad more sauce but I will definitely be getting this again. The Philly Cheeze Fries were bomb!! The peppers and mushrooms were perfectly cooked and so fresh. The cheeze sauce was delicious and the crinkly fries and beyond crumbles all together make a wonderful combo. I want to try their philly sandwiches now! Finally, the potato salad was my top favorite side. I am biased though because I loooove potato salad. And I love how easy it is to veganize. Their version is very good, I loved the crunch of the pickles. It was very busy when we went in on a Sunday around 12:30-1ish but I was happy to see it so busy, and we were still able to eat inside but we did have to wait a bit for a table. Very friendly service too. Overall 100/10 I cannot say enough how happy I am that Anchorage has an all Vegan restaurant. 11/2 update: I keep on editing this review because I keep going back to try more things :) Goal is to try the entire menu. This time, got the Beyond Gyro, Italian BMT sub, and Birria Tacos with Jackfruit. Everything was even better this time. My husband I agreed that the Gyro was our favorite. It tasted just like feta and the tzatziki sauce and the veggies were super fresh. The BMT sub was incredible too, I loved the aioli sauce they put in it. Pre-veggie me loved Italian subs, so I am so glad to have an option now! The birria tacos were so good too! Love love love jackfruit, it is a perfect texture akin to pulled pork or chicken. FALSE ADVERTISING. There's no where on the menu that says EVERYTHING is vegan.... When your advertising chicken burgers and burgers in general it should say somewhere that it's not actually meat. We ordered almost $100 worth of dinner for our family, very disappointing. The pictures looked amazing (that's why we ordered) it was NOT anywhere near the same quality as advertised or pictured. When we called to place our to go order they knew we were new customers that had not eaten here before. We asked recommendations and still not once were we notified (out of courtesy) that this was a fully vegan restaurant. The food was flavorless and overpriced. We didn't tell our kids it was vegan and tried to have them give it a try as we also did. They absolutely refused to eat dinner. They messed up FIVE orders of mine in a row and I kept saying I'll never eat there again. I still refused to give a bad review and to continue to give them another chance because there is no other full-blown vegan restaurant in town and they're new. Yesterday, I went there and they messed up my Philly fries (for the third time, only had them serve me everything listed in the fries from the menu TWICE) and they messed up my husbands animal fries by not adding the cheese so it was just Big Mac sauce and onions. When I asked for it to be corrected, the server said it's MY(the paying costumer) fault because "I told you 30 mins on the phone and you got here so fast" i had no trouble waiting. My husband was just chillin' waiting for my order, playing on his phone. He wasn't pressuring anyone to just shove stuff in a box and call it good. I don't see the "stay in your car until estimated order time" We got there 25 mins AFTER order and he pushed them out. I would have happily waited the extra time to get my order received CORRECTLY and cooked thoroughly(who likes raw mushrooms?) I've eaten there in person and had food served to me under done, missing listed items from the menu w/o telling me they were out or were not going to add them to my food this time. One time they were out of a lot of items and I still (stupidly) ordered and I swear to god they put American sliced cheese on my Russian Ruben i have had the Russian multiple times before that and it always had vegan cheese and if you grew up in the '90's or '00's you never forget what American sliced cheese tastes like So, after being let down and wasting SO much money by giving them a chance, time and time again... Cannot say enough good things about this place! This does NOT taste like typical vegan cuisine in the best ways! Initial walk-in the aesthetic is cute and modern. Everything on the menu is vegan and most of it is also soy free! The owner is super friendly and nice. The flavors of the food is PHENOMENAL. The Philly fries- amazing. The perfect amount of gooey crunchy and savory. The Cajun avocado Philly sandwich- delightful- the avocado really sets off the spices and flavors. The western burger- amazing. The acidity of the pickle really sets off the savory umami flavors adding to the crunch provided from the crispy onion. Honestly we were completely blown away by how fantastic this restaurant is. 5 stars aren't enough. read more
