I have an electric bicycle that I put together from various internet sources, and was having a problem with spokes breaking. This wasnt a matter of me being rough on the bike... it was a matter of torque. Putting a big guy on a 28 inch wheel just leads to problems to begin with. Add short spokes from the electric hub into the mix, and that's just begging for problems. These guys worked with me for a long time experimenting until we found a combination that worked: a tandem rim and 12-gage spokes. Since then, I've logged thousands of miles on that rim with no problems. We have all our bikes taken care of here. They are not the cheapest place to service bikes, but they have a great set of mechanics that can handle the wear and tear that big people put on their bikes. Make sure you dont rush them if you want their best work. They will go the extra mile for a loyal customer. read more

These guys are great. I bought an internet tri bike and brought it to this store for assembly and fitting. I worked with Rob, who definitely knows his stuff and was a joy to work with. There prices are extremely reasonable (less than $200 for assembly, fit and a set of steel pedals with cages). There are many great bike shops in the area. I met many helpful people at several shops who were willing to help out a relative newbie like me. Midwest Cyclery in Wheaton, Bicycles Etc. in Naperville, and The Bike Shop in Glen Ellyn all had very helpful staff, good selection, and decent deals. All were helpful in guiding me toward the kind of bike I ended up with. I'd have been very happy with any of them. (There were a few others in the region where it was difficult to get staff attention or to convince the salesperson that I really wasn't interested in racing.) Ultimately I settled on Prairie Path Cycles. I was predisposed to like it because it's exactly halfway between my home and my office, and literally on my daily commute. I could tell from my online research that their prices were quite good (generally at or below MSRP, while some other shops in the area were a bit above MSRP). Selection was fantastic. It was really hard to choose from four very similarly priced bikes. I would have been thrilled with the bike I ended up with no matter how I got it. But what made me leave ecstatic was the service. They literally spent hours answering my questions as I tested the bikes. They helped me figure out the kind of biker I am, the kind of biker I aspire to be, and the bike that best fit. Best sign: Encouraging me to buy a bike that cost me LESS than the bike I'd come in thinking I was going to get. Their service bonus was better than most local shops, too. All do a 30 or 60 day adjustment (of course) and most throw in a one-year tuneup. Prairie Path also has 2 free flat fixes and a lifetime (of the bike) 10% discount. I'm not a big Yelper. I don't tend to throw around nice online reviews. I just liked my experience at this place so much that I had to come online and tell other bike shoppers to check it out. read more

I was referred to Prairie Path by a friend of mine. Visited the store to check out the 2011 Trek line-up pretty early in the year. Staff was able to reference the line-up on the Trek website. We were able to discuss the differences between a couple bikes and a few weeks later I called to place the order for my 2011 Marlin. Great communication, great looking bike shop and they know their stuff. I highly recommend these guys. I visited three other shops in surrounding suburbs, but the other shops didn't know the product line-up and were only interested in pushing the bikes on the floor...not willing to order me what I wanted. This was our second or third in to buy accessories over the last few years. Tire and tube this time for our daughter's bike. The deal breaker after waiting for an available cashier, was that the tire for my ten year old's bike was clearly marked $12.99 on the sticker, and the scanner rang it up as 19.99. They refused to honor the price on the actual tire, so we left. Had better luck at Midwest Cyclery in Wheaton. Very attentive to bike purchasers at Prairie Path, maybe not so much for repairs. DON"T BUY YOUR BIKE HERE! Here is the quote from their web site. "Includes a detailed analysis and measurements to determine the best way to adjust the bike to your body type, flexibility and alignment.$50-125 or FREE with each road bike purchase at Prairie Path Cycles." I made an appointment and took a day off to get fitted for my $2k road bike. The day of my appointment, I was at the store and they said Mike could not fit today for personal reasons. The other guy said he could fit me and then tells me if the bike feels good were done - no fitting! They walked away from me and were wispering to each other and then came back with the story. Another customer in the shop had been waiting for a kickstand for over 30 days and they were supposed to call him (they had installed a kick stand that did not even hold the bike up). They never called him the 1st or 2nd time he came back in. Dont trust these guys. They must have written the other reviews on yelp. read more

Everything in this store is over priced except the sale rack and they don't even carry the best stuff. The woman behind the counter openly admits she doesn't know anything about the products they sell but she'll find a pamphlet on line somewhere and walk away. Their tune ups are over priced like most bike shops in the burbs (I really just need my wheels trued up.) I will say I met the owner who was very nice but I had to go in for an emergency tube and dealt with only the clerk who didn't want to be bothered with someone buying 'just a tube.' You get a much better deal on line and if you have any questions you can always IM or call those places and they know what their talking about. I'm of the school of thought that you should know something about what your selling and bar none don't treat people like crap because they don't spend as much as you think they should. read more

I bought my first real bike here in March. My previous bikes were big box store bikes. You know the type. Heavy, clunky, cheaply made. Never put together right. Having a real bike is amazing. It's like going from driving a gremlin to a Mercedes. The salesmen were not pushy. I told them what type of bike I wanted. They explained the differences between the types of bikes. I did not want a "Granny" bike. Or a girly looking bike. I ended up getting a men's bike. The women's frames they had in stock were too small for me. (I"m 5'10") I bought the Trek Gary Fisher 8.2. Silver. It's beautiful. Powerful. Fast. Maybe too fast. I had the bike for less than a month when I crashed. I hit some mud at the bottom of a hill and wiped out. Broken Ankle. Surgery. Almost 13 weeks later I was ready to ride again. I brought my bike back to Prairie path cycles. Colin checked it out for me. Even took if for a test ride. He told me that everything was fine. My bike was safe to ride. Colin even helped me put my bike on my car bike rack. The check up was free. Excellent service here. These guys are so good to me every time I come in. I had previously gone in to have one of my crappy bikes looked at it. No charge. I also made an apparel purchase here. I've never had a negative experience at this store. It is not a cheap store. You get quality bikes here. You get what you pay for. This store does has the best prices in the area. I checked around at several stores before I chose Prairie Path. I'm happy I chose this store. Horrific! Simply horrific. Worst experience in 50 years of dealing with a bike shop. Mind numbing that after having my mountain bike for 10 days they did not have it ready for pick-up after copious verbal instructions, 3 emails and 2 phone calls. A huge FAIL by them! Not sure about how the prices are on the bikes they sell are, but they do a good job fixing them if you ever need it done.

My second year into duathlon, my older brother was talk with me about trying out a road bike. I was not sure about. They let me rent a road bike to try and even was able to rent it for the race. After that, I was out shopping for a road bike and I went to their Batavia store but they didn't have the bike. We end up at there other store in Winfield and the manager there, saw my shirt, and said I have a bike with that same lime green. I ended up buying it!! Love my road bike!! I used to live close to their Winfield store but have move to Downers Grove, to this day, I will drive to their store for any bike repairs. They are a small business with great services!! I trust my bike to them!! I even got the clip pedals at their Batavia store from Mike. read more

My family and I can't say enough about PPC in Winfield. The staff is very knowledgeable and down to earth. This makes your buying experience very enjoyable and keeps us coming back. The tech shop is excellent and has always gone above and beyond the service required. It's nice to know that if you need a quick adjustment, you can pop in and they will help you on the fly. I have visited several other local Trek dealers in the area and even other bike mfg shops, but PPC keeps me coming back. After the top notch service I get from them, it's hard to justify a change even though they are not the closest dealer to me, In fact, in the past 16 months we have purchased 5 bikes from them. They know what they're doing but add about a week to whatever turnaround guesstimate they give you when you take your bike in for service.

My husband and I came here one day to see if any bikes caught our eye and were worth buying (he wanted a road bike, I wanted a bike that was lighter than my mountain bike). When we first walked in, I wasn't sure if they had a bike that I wanted (all I wanted was something easy to ride and in my size). After looking around and waiting our turn, the owner came up to us and asked if we needed help. My husband told her what we were looking for, and one of the first things she asked us was what our price range was. None of the other stores we went to asked about price. She brought down two bikes to show us, and let us test ride them. I can't really speak for my husband, but when I wasn't sure if I wanted a road bike, she found another bike to show me (cheaper than the road bike) and encouraged me to ride it around and compare bikes. Still, I couldn't make up my mind, so she took time out to ride one of the two bikes with me and explained some differences between the road bike and the comfort bike. There was never any pressure on which bike to purchase, and she never made me feel like I was taking up too much of her time. In the end, my husband and I both walked away with brand new road bikes. read more
