We have been servicing my husband's Hyundai at Poway Auto Imports for over 3 years now. Recently, we had to take it into the Hyundai service center for a software upgrade, something only the 'dealership' can do. Along with the upgrade, they performed an inspection which deemed that the drive belt needed immediate replacement, and the brake fluid to be changed soon. We chose to get the work done at Poway Auto Imports instead. But after dropping off the car, my husband later was called by the excellent George, who informed that no work was needed immediately...it could wait till our next scheduled maintenance some months later. So the car was picked up at the end of the day, without a penny being charged. Absolutely AMAZING shop! Elias, the owner, does his BEST to work with you and is 100% honest. A rarity amongst mechanics. I'm a decent mechanic myself and worked on my girlfriends Toyota Highlander A/C system at my house. EXTREMELY COMPLEX all digital climate control and electrical A/C system but I got to a point where I thought it may be a compressor failure. Called in and was told $95 to diagnose the problem, which $95 to confirm it was a compressor failure before we spent $800 on one was worth it. He said the compressor HAD failed. She decided to have him do the work (to save me the headache in 95 degree weather) because it requires removal of the radiator and multiple components just to get to it, and the tab was $1498 out the door. About average for a compressor swap. He did the work but it again failed after a few minutes on their test drive. He then sat on a "hotline" with certified Toyota Dealer Technicians who help other mechanics, but they were stumped as to the source of the problem. He called me and told me the only other part he thought could be responsible was an "A/C Amplifier", which is $600 from Toyota, but requested that his technician be allowed to drive it to a salvage yard to try a used one JUST TO SEE if it was indeed the problem and if so, he could order a new one. Technician drove there and the place had a very similar part, but not an exact fit, so it wouldn't work. In light of this, we had an $800 brand new compressor and $700 in labor (which it DEFINITELY takes that amount of labor to do), but still had no A/C. Elias said he could not in good conscience charge us $1500 for something that still didn't work. He actually paid $800 for the parts, and said "How about you just pay me HALF the cost of parts, just to be fair". Then he showed me a used Amplifier on Ebay and said I could try it myself before blowing $600 on a new one. It was $160 and plugs in under the dash, behind the glovebox and I did the swap myself. Sure enough, the A/C blows ICE COLD NOW!!!!!! Charged us $419 on a $1500 bill because the car had MULTIPLE issues that went much further than a compressor swap. He literally spent $419 of his own money to FIX OUR CAR and spent many hours on it and charged us ZERO labor cause it wasn't fully functional!!! And yes, the first compressor was ALSO bad, just as we suspected. I literally just called him and told him I would be bringing him the rest of the price of the compressor OF MY OWN WILL because he is such an awesome guy. Will bring every vehicle I own here because he's fair and I can trust him. Will recommend him to everyone I know! Great shop, Awesome owner! read more

Eli and his team are absolutely amazing. Truly fantastic mechanics and service people. Let me tell you why I trust Eli absolutely with my car and all my auto needs: I got rear-ended a couple of months ago, and my insurance company insisted that I send the car to one of their certified shops. 3 weeks later, I go to pick up my car on a Saturday, drive it 3 miles, and the engine goes into "safe" mode - meaning it won't go above 2nd gear, nor above 25 mph, and sounds like it's going to explode. I immediately call up the auto shop, and ask them, "Uh... what the hell did you do to my car?" I somehow get it back to that shop, they begin to work on it, and tell me, "We'll have our mechanics work on it and diagnose the problem today, and give you a call later." A few hours later, no call... no call... no call... I finally call them, and discover they're closed for the day. No call on Sunday. Monday morning rolls around, and I call them, and they say to me, "Oh... uh... our mechanic has the manual out right now, and is figuring out the error codes." WHAT??? You've pulled up some manual to try to figure out what the codes are saying??? You mean you know so little about European cars that you have to take out a manual? I can perfectly well open up and read a manual myself! What in the world am I paying you for??? It was at that point that it became abundantly clear to me that these guys were absolute clowns, and simply had no idea what they were doing. At that point, I called Eli. Eli asked me a couple of quick questions: "Did they do any welding?" Answer: Yes. "When they disconnected the battery to do the welding, did they follow A, B, and C procedures?" Answer: I have no idea. Why do you ask? Eli explained to me, "Look, here's how Mini Coopers work... If they didn't follow A, B, and C, then I know for certain that they shorted out such-and-such component in the engine." I immediately had the car towed to Eli. 30 minutes later, Eli identified the $20 part that had been shorted out, and the car was ready for pick-up that day. What took those clowns 3 days of trying and failing to fix, Eli had diagnosed and completed in 30 minutes. If you've got a car that you rely on, why would you trust it in the hands of amateurs? When you go to Eli, you get an incredible depth of knowledge and expertise, as well as a fantastic customer-service experience. I can't recommend Eli highly enough. read more

I've been a long-time client of Eli and Poway Import Auto Experts. I've lived in San Diego for more than 35 years. During that time, I've only been to two automotive repair shops. My first automotive repair shop was in Pacific Beach. When my old shop sold their business, I asked for a referral to another quality, trustworthy automotive shop. I was given Eli name and told he worked in Poway. I didn't really care about the distance because I will drive to find the best shop for my family's safety and well-being. My first visit to Eli came with my car on the back of a tow truck. But I will tell you, that from my very first visit to Poway Import Auto Experts, I found the referral from my old shop to be spot-on. Eli has a warm, genuine and friendly smile. Although he was clearly busy when my husband and I arrived to deal with our tow truck issue, Eli took the time to make us feel welcome. He told us that although our alternator would have to be replaced, our car was in excellent shape and had obviously been well-cared for in the past. I admired his quick, knowledgeable assessment of our vehicle. Not only did he not try to sell us anything, he told us there wasn't anything we needed. Furthermore, I respected his professional curiosity regarding why we had left our old shop. He was delighted to learn that he been referred to us, as he knew of and respected our old shop. He promised to do well by us and he's kept his promise for the past 14 years. Since then - everything to do with any of our vehicles - from oil changes, routine maintenance, age and time maintenance to the rare, unexpected "surprise" - goes straight to Eli. You should know, Eli is frequently quite blunt with regard to his pricing. I really like that. He told me right from the start, "I am not the cheapest shop; if you want a cheap price, we are not the right shop for you. Good, Original Equipment Manufacture (what he calls OEM) car parts are not cheap. Additionally, Eli and his staff go above and beyond to find the best available pricing without sacrificing quality. George Anderson, the General Manager, has fierce pricing skills. He has tracked down difficult parts for us with more than fair pricing. I also really appreciate that Eli is a genius at car diagnostics. It's fascinating to watch him properly diagnose and and then explain the repair issues - issues that have left dealerships not only perplexed, but frankly stumped, but his new customers elated! I've heard numerous customers tell me how Eli saved them from hefty dealership costs. I've had my own experiences with Eli saving our family, so much money, just by doing a thorough vehicle inspections - the benefit was knowing whether or not to proceed with the purchase after we got the inspection results!! I've also had personal experience when he had to deliver the hard news - that a beloved vehicle was just no longer worth putting more money into... and I've also appreciated his informed opinion on purchasing new vehicles - for our business and family use. The work ethic at Poway Import Auto Experts is pretty demanding. It's worth noting that Eli is a tough and exacting taskmaster. First time I take it in, he does what I needed fixed, and just adds in that he replaced a breather valve for free because he saw it was wearing out. $45 part installed for free, not a huge deal, but is nice. A few months later, I have replaced my fuel pump myself, but the car is having problems starting cold, so I call Eli up (the owner), and tell him I want to take it in to replace the fuel filter because I figured it got clogged up, and I didn't have time to replace it myself. I tell him whats going on with it, and that I'll be dropping it off that afternoon, and he proceeds to tell me exactly what the actual problem is, that I would be wasting my money by having him do it, and that I should just do it myself because its an easy fix. So he refused me as a customer and told me exactly how to fix the problem myself. Now that is some damn good customer service. I recommend his shop to anyone in northern San Diego county, because he really does take care of his customers. Had my battery replaced here in November, it's only been a month and a half and I've had to have my car towed back in to have battery replaced. Was told that my car is draining it's battery when I've never had that issue before. Now they want to charge me $180 to diagnose issue alone... Called BMW to compare prices for diagnosis / repair BMW El Cajon charges $170 for diagnosis and this amount can be applied to cost of repair. Plus you get a loaner vehicle. Poway Import is charging me $180 for diagnosis and this amount does not go to cost of repair. And you have to pay for own rental car. Doesnt make sense and does not seem logical to continue business here. read more

Last week my 2000 Acura died while I was driving on Espola. Luckily, I was able to pull over in time and avoid getting in an accident! When AAA showed up they recommended Poway Imports on Pomerado Road so I took them up on the offer. Glad I did! initially they told me I probably wouldn't get the car back until the next day but I received a phone call an hour later saying that they had already diagnosed the problem as a faulty main relay. They were able to repair it and I was able to pick it up before they closed the same day. I was particularly impressed with George's professionalism and friendliness. My second visit, just today, was to address myriad minor issues.
